    The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

Well, after a hiccup or two,I'm finally ready to get down to business. Here's the setup. It's 1905 and Major League Baseball has come into its own. Both leagues now have the teams that will survive into the present day and the World Series will become an October staple from here on out. Also in 1905,the Detroit Tigers introduced to the world the one and only Ty Cobb. The Major leagues are broken into two 8 team leagues, the National and the American. Here are the teams in each league:

    American League

    Philadelphia Athletics
    Chicago White Sox
    New York Highlanders
    Boston Americans
    Cleveland Naps
    Detroit Tigers
    St.Louis Browns
    Washington Senators

    National League

    Boston Beaneaters
    Brooklyn Superbas
    Chicago Cubs
    Cincinnati Reds
    Philadelphia Phillies
    New York Giants
    Pittsburgh Pirates
    St.Louis Cardinals

In this particular dynasty,I'm going to take command of the Philadelphia Athletics and guide them through history.I'll do this using Out Of The Park Baseball 9.In the game, there will be no free agency,no arbitration(until the 1970's that is) and no draft.Rookies will enter the league with the team they broke in with.Expansion, name changing, stadium changing, franchise movement will all take place at the appropriate time in history. There will be an expansion draft when new teams enter the league.Trading is set to hard/heavily favor prospects. All financials are season specific.I'm pretty sure I covered everything. If you have any questions or suggestions feel free to ask.Oh yeah, one more thing.PLAY BALL!!!!!!

Spring Training Edition Of News And Notes

        News

Wednesday, March 15th, 1905: ML News: Spring Training Begins
Spring training is more than just laid-back, carefree living in warm-weather climes. For clubs, it's about self-evaluation. For players, it's about making the big squad, or, failing that, impressing club officials enough to earn a promotion in the minor ranks. For team doctors, it begins the daily struggle against injury, illness, tiredness, and general disrepair. Hardly the lackadaisical atmosphere portrayed in the media.

        Transactions

Thursday, March 9th, 1905: New York, Boston Swap Stars
New York and Boston have closed a blockbuster deal involving star players. The Highlanders have swapped 28-year old second baseman Jimmy Williams to the Americans for 26-year old starting pitcher George Winter.

Over his career Williams is batting .299 with 157 doubles, 100 triples, 34 home runs, 519 RBIs and scored 517 runs in 791 games.

The 26-year-old Winter has a career record of 44-33 and has fanned 209 batters in 723.1 innings with a 2.82 ERA.

Philadelphia fans will be disappointed to learn that Harry Davis developed a strained rib cage muscle while colliding with a player at a base in today's game. After the doctor informed the Philadelphia Athletics manager that Davis was expected to miss 5 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the first baseman could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

Thursday, March 23rd, 1905: Cardinals Farrell Gone for Year
The news is bad in St. Louis. The Cardinals have lost the services of second baseman John Farrell for the rest of the season due to a torn ankle ligaments. Farrell was injured in a recent game with the New York Giants while running the bases and is expected to miss 7 months.

Sunday, March 26th, 1905: Jack Doscher Sidelined for Season
The doctors have spoken and Jack Doscher of the Brooklyn Superbas didn't like what he heard. The 24-year-old reliever is almost certainly gone for the rest of the year and depending on his progress could miss some of next season as well. Doscher sustained his season-ending injury during the Chicago Cubs game yesterday at Washington Park III. He had to leave the game because he hurt himself while throwing a pitch. Today the Brooklyn medical staff reported Doscher had a fractured elbow and would be absent from the lineup for at least 7-8 months.

The New York Highlanders will have to make do without Kid Elberfeld for 2-3 months. He suffered a fractured ankle while colliding with a player at a base in the game today against the Philadelphia Athletics. His teammates, understandably, were upset about losing the shortstop. "That's a tough break for him," one of them said. "But this team is resilient. We will just fill in until he gets back." Elberfeld will miss 2-3 months.

Thursday, April 6th, 1905: Takes Action, Flick Suspended
The Cleveland Naps were not very happy with the home plate umpire in today's 7-2 loss to Chicago at League Park I. One in particular -- Elmer Flick. Upon being called out on strikes, the Naps right fielder gave the ump quite an earful. For that, the man in blue gave him the thumb and sent him to an early shower.

But the disgruntled Flick lingered on the field for another five minutes berating the umpire. Finally his manager got him off the field and into the clubhouse.

But it got worse after the game, when Flick told reporters, "He was blind today. They played 'Three Blind Mice' for him. If he doesn't know the words to the song, I'm sure we can get it in braille, so he can follow along."

For all of his escapades and after-the-game oration, the league office suspended Flick for 5 games.

Watching Frank Chance getting helped off the field today at West Side Park II, fans of the Chicago Cubs feared the worst. The news wasn't quite as bad as initially feared, but the first baseman will miss 1-2 weeks with a strained thigh muscle. "We feel we've dodged a bullet. When you see a guy break down like that, you worry right away," a team spokesman said. Chance suffered the injury running the bases in the game against the Phillies.

                News Items

With Spring Training wrapping up,everyone is busy preparing for the trek north and the long season ahead. The Athletics, played very well this spring going 15-9 tying them with the Detroit Tigers for the best record in the American League. The Chicago Cubs paced the NL with a stellar 17-7 record. As far as individual performances go,the Athletics were led by Center Fielder Danny Hoffman who batted .355 with 17 stolen bases. On the hill,Chief Bender was fantastic with 24 IP and a 0.75 ERA,but nobody outperformed relief pitcher Jimmy Dygert who pitched a whopping 83 innings, struck out 50 batters and had an ERA of 1.95.The A's are loaded this season and should contend for a league title along with Chicago,Detroit and Boston. In the National league, look for the NY Giants,Chicago Cubs,Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Philies to battle it out for league supremecy.Lets PLAY BALL!

Cy Young Silences A's With 5 Hit Shutout
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-Its opening day here in Philadelphia and what could be better than a game between two of the top American League teams, each with their ace starter on the mound:For the Boston Americans,Cy Young and for the Athletics,Rube Waddell.Unfortunately for the Athletics though, facing Cy Young is bad enough, but facing him without two of your regular starters is virtually impossible and from the first inning,Young controlled the game, never allowing a batter past second base on his way to a 5 hit complete game 2-0 shutout.Waddell wasn't nearly as sharp, going 7 and a third allowing 9 hits and 2 earned runs to go along with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. With neither team able to score a run through 5 innings of play, the Americans finally got something goin in the 6th when following two quick outs,Boston got three straight singles from Buck Freeman,Jimmy Williams, and Freddy Parent with Parent's base hit bringing home Freeman and giving Boston a 1-0 lead. The Americans would add an insurance run in the 8th when Myron Grimshaw's pinch hit RBI single brought home Hobe Ferris who was pinch running for Buck Freeman who stroked his 4th hit of the game with one out in the inning. Here's the box score.

                    Saturday April 15,1905

                    Hail To The Chief!

Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-In another tense low scoring ballgame, the Philadelphia Athletics evened their record at one with a 3-2 victory against the Boston Americans.A's starter Chief Bender had a great ballgame going 9 strong innings and allowing 6 hits and 2 runs(0 earned) with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. He also helped his own cause at the plate going 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.Today's game started out much like yesterday's with no one getting on the board through the first 4 and a half innings, but in the bottom of the 5th,the Athletics finally showed some signs of life when following a one out double by Schoolboy Knight,Chief Bender got a clutch single to center scoring Knight and giving Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.Danny Hoffman's follow up single gave the Athletics first and third with one out for Danny Murphy who grounded out to second scoring Bender and giving the A's a 2-0 lead at the end of 5.Boston came right back to tie it in the 6th when following a leadoff triple by Jesse Burkett,Myron Grimshaw grounded to Bender who booted the ball allowing Burkett to score and Grimshaw to reach base.Following a ground out and 2 walks(1 intentional) to load the bases,Jimmy Williams grounded in to a fielder's choice scoring Grimshaw.Hobe Ferris would then strikeout to end the inning with the score tied 2-2.The Athletics would break the tie in the 7th on a Danny Hoffman RBI single that scored Schoolboy Knight giving Philadelphia the 3-2 lead.Bender quelled a Boston rally in the 8th that stranded two runners and pitched a 1-2-3 9th to end the game. Here's the Box score.

                      Monday April 17,1905

Athletics Steal Their Way To Victory!
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa-In another wonderfully competitive game, the Athletics were just able to edge the Boston Americans, winning the game 3-2 to take their first series of the season. In the top of the first,Boston came out swinging on Athletics starter Eddie Plank with Jesse Burkett and Jimmy Collins both singling and Chick Stahl coaxing a walk giving Boston the bases loaded with no outs for Kip Selbach.Selbach then singled to right on a little Texas Leaguer bringing home two Boston runs and leaving runners on the corners still without an out being made.Plank settled though and retired the next three batters in order escaping the inning only down 2.Still down 2-0 entering the bottom of the 4th,the Athletics rallied when following back to back one out singles by Danny Murphy and Topsy Hartsel,Mack called for the double steal causing Americans catcher Lou Criger to throw the ball into left field bringing home Murphy and putting Hartsel on third with Socks Seybold at the plate.Seybold proceeded to tie the game with a base hit to right giving Philadelphia new life. The game would stay tied at 2 until the bottom of the 7th where following a Topsy Hartsel walk and stolen base,Socks Seybold grounded out to second advancing Hartsel to third with one out.Lave Cross was then intentionally walked and Ossee Schreckengost just beat out a nubber down the third base line for an infield single to load the bases.Harry Barton then followed with fielders's choice bringing home the go ahead run and the A's had their first lead at 3-2 after 7 innings.Following an uneventful 8th that saw starter Eddie Plank lifted for reliever Welden Henley, the Americans were down to their last three outs.Leadoff batter Freddie Parent reached on an error by the shortstop and immediately we had drama. The next two batters both grounded out advancing Parent to third,90 feet from tying the game.Connie Mack had one more trick up his sleeve,he called for two straight intentional walks loading the bases for Bunny Godwin who had not had an at bat all season.Predictably,Godwin flied out harmlessly to right preserving the victory for Philadelphia. Here's the box score.

Highlanders Steal Home Twice In 7-3 Win
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-In a blistering tirade,Athletics skipper Connie Mack exploded on his team after a perceived lack of effort in today's 7-3 defeat."I will not accept anything less than 100% effort, and when a team steals home on you twice in one game, your not giving 100%"."To be fair, the Highlanders are very aggressive on the basepaths and the only way to combat this is to keep the baserunners down to a minimum,Waddell didn't do that today,he allowed 11 baserunners and thats just too many if you expect to win consistently in this league".The game started out with the Highlanders building a 4-1 lead after 2 innings, the Athletics never recovered.Dave Fultz and Frank Delahanty did most of the damage with both players going 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored with Fultz stealing 3 bases and Delahanty 2 including a steal of home for each player.Jack Chesboro pitched just well enough to improve his record to 2-0.He went the distance allowing 10 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 1.For Philadelphia,Schoolboy Knight made up for his poor effort in the field by going 3 for 4 with a double an RBi a run scored and the teams first home run of the season. Here's the box score.

Athletics Halt Highlanders Run Game,Win 5-0
Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-In a clinic like performance, the Philadelphia Athletics behind another complete game shutout by Chief Bender dismantled the New York offense on their way to a 5-0 victory. The Athletics set the tone early, throwing out the first two runners who attempted to steal a base, effectively grounding the explosive Highlander attack. The A's mounted their own attack in the bottom of the third when following a Danny Hoffman leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt by Danny Murphy,Topsy Hartsel singled home Hoffman who was then doubled home by Harry Davis who finally returned to action after a 5 week rib injury.Following a Socks Seybold strikeout,Lave Cross singled home Davis giving the Athletics a 3-0 after 3.That score would remain until the 7th when Topsy Hartsel singled home Danny Hoffman giving the A's a 4-0 lead. The Athletics struck again in the 8th on a Chief Bender RBI single that ended the scoring at 5-0.On the hill,The Chief was in absolute control the entire game allowing 5 hits and 5 walks while fanning 6 in the complete game victory.Offensively,Danny Hoffman reeked havoc on New York going 4 for 4 with 2 stolen bases and 2 runs scored. All in all, this was the best all around game of the season for Philadelphia who get another boost tomorrow with the return of starting shortstop Monte Cross for this weekend's series in Boston.Cross has been out for the last four weeks with a damaged meniscus. Here's the box score.
