Error In 6th Hands Athletics 4-3 Victory

Huntington Avenue Grounds,Boston Ma.-In a tightly contested battle,the Athletics were once again to able to defeat the Americans,this time by the score of 4-3.The A's jumped out quicky scoring twice in the top of the second on back to back RBI doubles by Ossee Schreckengost and Monte Cross giving pitcher Andy Coakley an early 2-0 lead to work with.Boston closed it to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning on a Duke Farrell fly ball that was dropped by CF Danny Hoffman allowing Freddie Parent to score.Following a Harry Davis triple to start the fourth,Socks Seybold grounded out to short scoring Davis and increasing the lead to 3-1 after 4.In the 6th,Danny Murphy's leadoff single was followed by a sacrifice bunt and a steal of third giving Philadelphia a man on third with one out.Boston then proceeded to intentionally walk the next two batters loading the bases for Lave Cross who struck out swinging for the second out of the inning.Ossee Schreckengost then came to the plate and hit a routine grounder to second that was booted by Boston second baseman Jimmy Williams giving Philadelphia a 4-1 lead before Monte Cross's fly out ended the inning.Boston began their half of the sixth with a Jesse Burkett single followed by a Myron Grimshaw double giving Boston second and third with no outs.Coakley evidently rattled,uncorked a wild pitch allowing Burkett to score and Grimshaw to move up to third still without an out in the inning.Coakley then went strike out,RBI ground out and ground out to survive the inning with a 4-3 lead.Boston would not threaten over the final three innings and Philadelphia would go on to win by the final score of 4-3.Here's the box score.

Saturday, April 22nd, 1905: Griffith No-Hits Senators Clark Griffith of the Highlanders was standing behind the mound when the scoreboard caught his eye, confirming what he already knew... he was one out from a no-hitter. He froze... for a couple of seconds he didn't move. "This hitter is the last one," Griffith told himself. Then he collected himself and finished one of his greatest performances ever. The New York hurler no-hit the Washington Senators 3-0 at Hilltop Park, finishing with 1 walks and 4 strikeouts, facing only 29 batters. Griffith admitted to the press, "I knew from the fifth inning on it was a no-hitter, but really didn't worry about it until the last out. I just wanted to win the game until then... then I wanted the no-hitter, too."

Saturday, April 22nd, 1905: Altrock Mystifies Detroit Nick Altrock allowed 2 hits while giving up 2 walks and collecting no strikeouts as Chicago blanked Detroit 5-0. In the postgame interview Altrock said, "I'm trying to keep the ball down and let guys put it in play. It worked for me today."

Saturday, April 22nd, 1905: Freeman out of Action Buck Freeman of the Boston Americans could be headed for the disabled list after suffering a strained posterior cruciate ligament in a game against the Philadelphia Athletics. He is expected to miss at least 5 weeks. The Boston right fielder was injured running the bases. Freeman said, "Right now I am pretty sore and I don't feel very good at all." This year Freeman is hitting .370 with 10 hits, no home runs, 0 RBIs and has scored 4 runs.

Monday, April 24th, 1905: Cross Selected Top Player Lave Cross showed the steely determination of a veteran this past week as he rode a hot streak all the way to American League Player of the Week honors. The 38-year-old Athletics third baseman compiled a .526 average (10-19), no home runs and 4 RBIs.

Monday, April 24th, 1905: Leach Wins NL Player of the Week Prize At the age of 27, Tommy Leach might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Pittsburgh third baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days collecting the National League Player of the Week Award. He racked up 11 hits in 18 at-bats, 1 home run and 6 RBIs last week in 6 games.

Cy Young Once Again Blanks Philadelphia 2-0

Huntington Avenue Grounds,Boston,Ma.-For the second time this season,Cy Young has gotten the best of Rube Waddell leading his Boston Americans past the Athletics 2-0.Hits were at a premium today with both pitchers on top of their games and although Young allowed more hits than Waddell,Philadelphia were unable to capitalize on them while Boston made the most of their 3 knocks.The games first run came in the bottom of the third when following a single and a stolen base by Lou Criger,Cy Young bunted him over to third,and Jesse Burkett brought him home on a sac fly giving Boston the 1-0 lead.Boston doubled their lead in the 5th on a Lou Criger RBI ground out scoring Jimmy Williams who singled to start the inning.From there on out,it was all Cy Young who shut Philadelphia down the rest of the way preserving the win.Here's the box score.

Philadelphia Loses A Heartbreaker To Boston 4-3

Huntington Avenue Grounds,Boston,Ma.-In some of the fiercest baseball played so far this season,The Boston Americans clawed their way past Chief Bender and the Athletics 4-3.Boston drew first blood in the 3rd,scoring on a Chick Stahl 2 out RBI double giving Boston a 1-0 lead and snapping Chief Bender's 20 inning scoreless streak in the process.The Athletics tied it in the 4th on a 2 out RBI double of their own by Harry "Jasper" Davis.In the 5th,the A's took their first lead of the game on Chief Bender's clutch two out RBI single scoring Ossee Schreckengost.Entering their half of the 7th down 2-1,Boston's Jimmy Collins almost ignited a brawl when after being nailed in the back by a Chief Bender fastball to start the inning,he menacingly pointed his bat at Bender shouting explicitives on his way to first,this outburst definitely rattled Bender's concentration and the next two batters took full advantage as Freddie Parent doubled and Hobe Ferris singled tying the game at 2.The Chief then retired the next three batters ending the 7th inning with a 2-2 score.Monte Cross led off the 8th with a high chop off the plate that catcher Dick Farrell threw into right field allowing Cross to go to second base with no outs.Following a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk,the Athletics had runners on first and third with one out for Lave Cross who grounded to short,just beating out a double play allowing Monte Cross to score on the fielders choice giving Philadelphia a 3-2 lead.Back to back singles in the bottom of the 8th by Myron Grimshaw and Chick Stahl,gave Boston first and third with no outs for Jesse Burkett who grounded out harmlessly to third for the first out of the inning.Bob Unglaub then struck out for out number two and it looked as though the Chief would get out of the inning,but it wasn't to be as Freddie Parent singled home Grimshaw and Stahl before being thrown out at second base trying to stretch it to a double.Down 4-3 entering the 9th,the Athletics had nothing more for Boston and were defeated by that same score.Here's the box score.

Delahanty The King Of New York After 4-2 Victory For Highlanders

Hilltop Park,NY,NY-Frank Delahanty's heroics in the bottom of the 9th gave New York a stunning come from behind 4-2 victory over Philadelphia today.The Athletics got on the board first when following a leadoff triple by Topsy Hartsel to start the second inning,Danny Murphy singled giving the A's the 1-0 lead.The lead would bulge to 2 when following an Ossee Schreckengost ground out that advanced Murphy to 2nd,Monte Cross singled bringing him home and the inning ended with the Athletics holding a 2-0 lead.From there, the game settled into a pitchers duel with neither team scoring until the bottom of the 7th when Highlander center fielder Dave Fultz ignited the crowd with a solo home run to left center shrinking the Philadelphia lead to 2-1.Entering the 9th with the score still 2-1,Willie Keeler led off the inning by reaching first on an error by Danny Muphy putting the tying run on first with no outs.Frank Laporte then walked and all of a sudden,the Highlanders were threatening,but Athletics starter Eddie Plank fought back retiring the next two batters leaving New York with second and third and two outs for Frank Delahanty.Plank quickly got ahead of Delahanty 1-2 when to the amazement of everyone in the ballpark,Delahanty slammed an Eddie Plank fastball over the left field fence giving New York a shocking 4-2 victory.Here's the box score.

Thursday, April 27th, 1905: New York's Donlin Goes Ballistic with 5 Hits Mike Donlin exploded for a barrage of base hits today at Polo Grounds III. The New York center fielder had a field day in the 10-3 triumph over the Brooklyn Superbas, finishing with a 5-5 day and a spot in the league record book. "My hitting philosophy is pretty simple," he said. "I focus on just seeing the ball and I try to get a good pitch." Well, Donlin must have focused at least 5 times and apparently got some good pitches, too. It was one of his best days ever with the bat. M. Donlin hit a two-run single in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 8th. In 1905 Donlin is currently batting .455 with 1 home run and 12 RBIs. In 12 games he has reached base at a .528 rate and scored 10 runs to date.

Thursday, April 27th, 1905: White Sox Blank Browns, Owen Wins In a splendid 2-0 shutout performance, Frank Owen of the Chicago White Sox subdued the St. Louis Browns on a 6-hitter. Rumors Begin To Swirl As Eccentric Waddell Falls To 0-4

Hilltop Park,NY,NY-Athletics starting pitcher Rube Waddell has all of a sudden become the topic of rampant trade speculation as Connie Mack becomes more and more incensed with the eccentric pitchers' antics which include leaving the dugout to chase firetrucks, and becoming entranced by fans waving stuffed toys and puppy dogs at him from the bleachers among other things.Waddell has been odd for years so this kind of behavoir is nothing new,but the losing is and the reality is when you lose peoples perceptions change.In today's game,Waddell was outpitched by the Highlanders Jack Chesbro who defeated the Athletics 3-1.After three scoreless innings to start the game,the Highlanders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a two out two run single by Dave Fultz.The A's drew to within 1 in the 5th when Danny Hoffman singled home Ossee Schreckengost making it a 2-1 game.In the bottom of the 6th though,Frank LaPorte's sacrifice fly gave New York a 3-1 lead and Chesbro took over from there shutting Philly down the rest of the way.Here's the box score.

Friday, April 28th, 1905: Terry Turner Sidelined for Season The season is apparently over for Terry Turner. The Cleveland Naps medical staff informed the club that the shortstop will be out at least 12 months with back spasms. Turner was hurt in the game against St. Louis while throwing the ball. The doctors did not think he would recover prior to the end of the season. Looking at his 1905 season stats, Turner has compiled a .271 batting average in 13 games with a .352 on-base percentage, while hitting no home runs and driving in 4 runs

Davis Leads The Way As Athletics Crush Highlanders 12-3

Hilltop Park,NY NY-In one of the most one sided games you'll ever see,The Philadelphia A's absolutely demolished the NY Highlanders today by the score of 12-3.Harry Davis lead the way for Philadelphia going 3 for 5 with a triple,a home run,2 RBI and 3 runs scored.With a 1-0 lead heading into the 3rd,it looked as though the Athletics were in for another nailbiter but that wasn't to be as the A's pounded NY pitching for 6 runs over the next two innings taking a 7-0 lead into the 5th.It got no better for the Highlanders as the game wore on with Philadelphia eventually taking a 12-0 lead into the 9th where NY scored 3 meaningless runs off of a tired Chief Bender.For the game,the Athletics pounded out 11 hits,6 stolen bases(including one of home) and 2 home runs off of 3 Highlander pitchers.With all of this offense,its easy to overlook the fantastic game that Chief Bender pitched,going the distance and allowing 7 hits,4 walks,3 earned runs and 7 strikeouts for his third win of the season.Here's the box score.

Saturday, April 29th, 1905: Philadelphia's Doolan Down with Injury Mickey Doolan of the Philadelphia Phillies was injured in today's game against Boston and had to be helped off the field by the trainers. The initial diagnosis is a tender elbow and he is expected to be out for up to 1-2 weeks. It happened while Doolan was throwing the ball. "It hurt a lot, to be honest. I just hope it heals soon and I can get back on the field." This season Doolan is batting .163 with no home runs. His totals include 7 RBIs and 1 run scored.

Players Of The Week For Week Ending April 30,1905

Monday, May 1st, 1905: AL's Best Player Named Jack McCarthy showed the steely determination of a veteran this past week as he rode a hot streak all the way to American League Player of the Week honors. The 36-year-old Naps center fielder compiled a .500 average (14-28), no home runs and 2 RBIs. To date McCarthy has chalked up a .472 average with no home runs, driven in 5 runs and scored 9 times.

Monday, May 1st, 1905: Beckley Punishes NL Pitchers This Week His critics are starting to suggest that St. Louis's Jake Beckley doesn't have much left, but the 37-year-old Beckley prefers not to think that way. He cooked up a remarkable week in the last seven days, topping it off with the Player of the Week Award in the National League. The veteran first baseman for the Cardinals rolled to a .517 average (15-29) with no home runs and 3 RBIs. In 16 games this season Beckley has batted at a .349 pace with 22 hits and no home runs

Player Awards For The Month Of April

Monday, May 1st, 1905: #1 National League Newcomer Named Harry McIntire put on quite a show in the National League throughout the month of April and walked off with the Rookie of the Month Award. In 4 starting appearances, he had a record of 3-1 with some solid stats for Brooklyn. He chalked up a 1.77 ERA in 35.2 innings, struck out 19 and allowed the opposition to hit .187 against him.

Monday, May 1st, 1905: American League Names Rookie of Month Hal Chase's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young New York first baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month. In April he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award. During the month he hit .298 with 2 doubles, 2 triples and 2 home runs. Chase also scored 6 times and drove in 5 runs.

Monday, May 1st, 1905: Pittsburgh Starter Named NL's #1 Pitcher An outstanding 4-0 record in April earned Patsy Flaherty the Pitcher of the Month Award in the National League. When his name was penciled in to start on the Pittsburgh lineup card, it meant trouble for opposing teams. In 36 innings of work, Flaherty limited opposing batters to 24 base hits and a .194 batting average. He notched 12 strikeouts, issued 11 walks and had a 1.75 ERA.

Monday, May 1st, 1905: Young - April's Best AL Hurler Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Cy Young still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in April. The 38-year-old starter for Boston was named American League Pitcher of the Month earlier today. He collected 4 wins and no losses with 19 strikeouts in his 4 starts, putting up a fine 1.25 ERA in 36 innings of work.

Monday, May 1st, 1905: Donlin Takes Home NL Top Batter Award Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 26-year-old Mike Donlin put together a solid offensive month for New York and was crowned April's top batter in the National League. He batted .472 with 1 home run, 13 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

Monday, May 1st, 1905: April's #1 Batter Announced Jack McCarthy battered American League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award. "I've been around Major League Baseball long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 36-year-old McCarthy told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month." Full Monte!

Columbia Avenue Grounds,Phila.Pa.-Phillies shortstop Monte Cross was the big man today with a two run double in the 4th followed later by a tremendous 8th inning play in which he killed a Washington rally by flasing the leather and starting demoralizing double play which preserved the Philadelphia lead and ultimately the ballgame.The Athletics got things started today in the fourth by quickly loading the bases with no outs for Danny Murphy who singled home Socks Seybold for the 1-0 lead.Monte Cross then doubled home Harry Davis and Topsy Hartsel giving Philadelphia two more runs and a 3-0 lead still with no outs.Senators starting pitcher Barney Wolfe stayed calm though, and was able to get out of the inning without allowing another run.From then on,Wolfe was phenomenal allowing a mere two singles the rest of the way for a line of 8 IP, 8 Hits ,3 Runs(2 earned),2 walks and 1 K's.A's starter Eddie Plank,also pitched well allowing his only run in the 7th on a Charlie "Casey" Jones 2 out RBI double.In the 8th,Washington's third baseman Hunter Hill led off the inning with a double giving the visitors a glimmer of hope.Following sacrifice bunt by Barney Wolfe and a walk by Rabbit Nil in which he fouled off 6 straight 3-2 pitches,Joe Cassidy came to the plate looking to keep the rally alive.Cassidy slammed a ground ball between third and short that Monte Cross somehow speared and then in one motion Cross jumped,turned, and flung the ball over to second baseman Danny Murphy starting the inning ending 6-4-3 double play.Washington failed to threaten in the 9th and the Athletics held on to win 3-1.Here's the box score

Athletics Pitch Their Way Past Senators

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.In another fantastic pitching performance,The Athletics Andy Coakley improved his record to 4-0 today with a 3-1 victory over the Washington Senators.Scoreless through three,the A's got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth on an Ossee Schreckengost sacrifice fly giving Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.The Senators quickly tied it in the 5th with a Rabbit Nill mammoth home run that went clear onto 29th street,causing a bit of a ruckus with fans fighting for the ball.In the bottom of the inning,the Athletics went ahead for good when with two outs and the bases loaded,second baseman Danny Murphy stroked a single to center scoring Lave Cross and Socks Seybold giving Philadelphia the 3-1 lead they would win the game by.Here's the box score.

Waddell Loses To Senators Falls To 0-5

Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-In what is now becoming a disconcerting trend,Athletics starter Rube Waddell again couldn't get it done losing to the lowly Senators 5-3 dropping his record to 0-5."We need Rube to snap out of this if we hope to win a pennant" said one player today "You really feel for the guy seeing him struggle like this ya know but it is only early May so there's planty of time for him to come around".Thats pretty much the mood here in the clubhouse,down to a man,everybody on this team is behind big Rube 100% and they're doing everything they can to keep his confidence up.In today's game,the Senators got on the board first in the third on a Joe Cassidy RBI ground out that scored Case Patten who doubled earlier in the inning.The Senators made it 2-0 in the 6th when Joe Cassidy singled to lead off the inning,advanced to 2nd when player/manager Jake Stahl was hit by a pitch,stole third,and finally scored on a Frank Hueslman sac fly.Stolen bases were a problem all day today with Washington stealing a total of 8 bases off of Philadelphia.In the 8th,Washington really broke it open scoring 3 times on 4 hits and taking a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the inning.Up to this point,Senators starter Case Patten had held the A's to only 1 hit but Philadelphia finally got to Patten in the 8th starting the inning with a single,double,walk and an RBI single closing the gap to 5-1.The Athletics would score twice more with back to back sac flys but that would be it,the senators would hold on to win 5-3.Here's the box score.
