Sloppy Play Dooms Athletics Who Drop Third Straight

Sportsman's Park,St.Louis Mo.-The St.Louis Browns once again used extra innings to defeat the Philadelphia Athletics, this time by the score of 6-5.Early on,it looked as though the rout was on as the A's committed 7 errors on their way to a 5-1 deficit after 8 innings. In the 9th,the Athletics turned it on and somehow were able to tie the game and send it into extra innings. In the extra frames, the Browns again had the last laugh when Bobby Wallace doubled home George Stone giving the Browns the 6-5 victory. Here's the box score.

Players Of The Week For This Week,May 8-14

Monday, May 15th, 1905: Great Week for New York's Center Fielder
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Mike Donlin, the New York center fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the National League Player of the Week honors.

Donlin piled up 14 hits in 24 at-bats, 1 home run and 6 RBIs while hitting .583.

In 1905 Donlin is batting .458 with 44 hits, 2 home runs, 19 RBIs, 19 walks, .543 OBP and has scored 20 runs. He has played in 26 games.

Monday, May 15th, 1905: American League Hitter of the Week
At the age of 29, Elmer Flick might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Cleveland right fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days collecting the American League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 7 hits in 22 at-bats, 2 home runs and 6 RBIs last week in 6 games.

In his season totals Flick has 3 home runs and a .240 batting average.

Athletics Find A Way To Lose Despite Bender's 2 Hitter
Sportsman's Park-In a fitting end to a nightmare series,A's starting pitcher Chief Bender allowed all of two hits but his team still found a way to lose the game 2-1.The Browns struck first in the 2nd when following a Branch Rickey walk,Bender uncorked a wild pitch sending Rickey to second, then Rickey stole third setting up Ike Rockenfield's Sac Fly giving St.Louis the 1-0 lead. The A's tied it in the 5th on a Harry davis RBi single that scored Lave Cross. The difference maker came in the bottom of the 6th where George Stone singled home Jim Buchanan who walked to start off the inning.Following the 4 game sweep, the Athletics now head to Chicago to take on the first place White Sox.Here's the box score.

          Athletics Suffer 5th Straight Defeat
South Side Park,Chicago,Ill.-Despite holding the lead for most of the game, the Athletics were unable finish the job, ultimately losing in 10 innings to first place Chicago 2-1 extending their skid to 5 games."Obviously we have a much better team than our record indicates" opined starting pitcher Eddie Plank who also added that"The boys will get this turned around,I'm sure of it.Last time I checked,no one ever won the Series in May".All in all,we here at the Daily News agree with Gettysburg Eddie but at the same time, you don't want to fall to far behind especially with there being so many good teams in the league this season. In today's game, our hometown heroes jumped out in front in the third on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze laid down by Lave Cross and scoring Danny Hoffman who found his way to third with a single and an errant throw on a steal attempt of second that allowed Danny to take an extra base. From there,we had a stalemate until the 8th when following a one out seeing eye single by White Sox pitcher Ed Walsh,Nixie Callahan doubled down the left field line scoring Walsh and tying the game at 1.With neither team able to mount anything in the 9th,The Athletics were headed to extras for the third time in their last four games. In the 10th,the Athletics went down 1-2-3 giving the home team a chance the would not squander. With young righty Sunny Jim Dygert on the hill for Philly, the end would come quickly.Chicago second baseman Frank Isbell led off the inning with a double and was quickly brought home by pinch hitter Danny Green who also doubled giving Chicago the 2-1 win. Here's the box score.

Tuesday, May 16th, 1905: Willis Hot, Reds Cold
Before the game Vic Willis liked his chances and his instincts proved to be right. In a superb outing the Beaneaters pitcher whitewashed the Cincinnati Reds 5-0.

Willis said in the clubhouse afterward, "I just had a feeling it was going to be my day. My control was awesome. I could throw my curveball even when I was behind in the count."

The Boston starter held Cincinnati scoreless, giving up 2 hits while registering 4 strikeouts and issuing 1 walk.

"We didn't have very many good at-bats," the Reds manager said in his postgame interview.

"When that happens, you usually lose."

This season to date Willis has a record of 4 wins and 4 losses with a 2.60 ERA, has appeared in 8 games and struck out 22 in 62.1 innings.

Struggling Athletics No Match For Streaking White Sox
South Side Park,Chicago,Ill.-In what is becoming a disturbing trend, the Philadelphia Athletics again looked disinterested and lacksadasical as the Chicago White Sox had their way with them in today's 6-1 defeat. After three scoreless innings to start the ballgame,The A's gave Chicago the first run of the game when with a man on third and two outs,Andy Coakley's pickoff throw sailed into front row of seats giving the Sox a 1-0 lead. The lead grew to 4-0 in the 5th on a 2 run triple by Lee Tannehill followed by a Frank Owen RBI ground out giving Chicago an almost insurmountable lead.In the 7th,the White Sox added two more runs on a shocking two run homer by starting pitcher Frank "Yip" Owen making the score 6-0.Beside swatting long flys,Owen was also having a monsterous day on the mound allowing only 1 hit and 0 runs after 7 innings of play.In the 9th,the Athletics finally got to Owen a bit, scoring a run on three hits ending the scoring at 6-1.The Athletics have now lost 6 straight and have fallen to 14-14,eight and a half games behind Chicago. Here's the box score.

Athletics Pound White Sox To End Skid
South Side Park,Chicago,Ill.-Finally! After a week long struggle to find a victory, the Athletics finally came through and walloped the Chicago White Sox 10-4 snapping their 6 game losing streak.Starting pitcher Rube Waddell was solid in victory, going 9 while allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs and striking out 5.Up 2-0 in the bottom of the second,Waddell began to struggle a bit allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and two walks, including one with the bases loaded and the A's found themselves down 3-2 after 2.Waddell settled down though and the score held until the 7th when the A's tied the game on a Lave Cross sacrifice fly.In the eighth, the Athletics exploded for 6 hits and 7 runs turning a tie game into a 10-3 rout to the disgust of the home crowd. The Sox would add a run in the 9th but would go on to lose the game,10-4.Here's the box score.

Latest Loss Leaves Mack Searching For Answers
League Park,Cleveland,Oh.-Following today's 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Cleveland Naps,A's Manager Connie Mack was asked :What,if anything could be done to get this team going again,to which Mack Responded,"Baseball is a funny game, just when you think you got it figured out,you go on to lose 8 out of 9 games, fall under .500 and begin to doubt yourself, causing even more losing". From there, Mack went on to wax poetic about the virtues of unshakeable confidence and the expectation of victory as opposed to hope.As far as my view goes,I see a team that lacks a leader, one guy that the rest of the team can rally behind, the guy who'll get you that clutch base hit when you need it the most. For what its worth, the players have called a team meeting to air out their frustrations,as of press time,it wasn't clear if Mr. Mack orchestrated the meeting or not in a desperate attempt to get his team going. One thing is for sure though, this is not a bad team, the boys' definitely have the ability to win a pennant. They just haven't shown it yet.In today's game,A's CF Danny Hoffman's leadoff double in the top of the first was quickly followed by a steal of third and a Lave Cross sac fly giving the visitors an early 1-0 lead.In the third, the lead went to 2-0 when Lave Cross came through again, singling home pitcher Eddie Plank who himself singled to start the inning. The Naps struck back in the fourth though on a Nap Lajoie RBI single that was followed by a U6-3 double play that brought home the tying run.Tied at 2 in the 6th,the Naps took their first lead of the game on a Nap Lajoie RBI double that gave Cleveland a 3-2 lead.In the 8th,Cleveland added an insurance run when Bill Bradley singled home Elmer Flick who's two out walk and subsequent steal of second were the exact type of plays that the A's have been lacking. In the 9th,the Athletics went down 1-2-3 giving Cleveland the 4-2 victory. Here's the box score.

Players Of The Week For This Week

Monday, May 22nd, 1905: Pitcher Wins Week's Top Player Award
Mordecai Brown is capable of a great game every time he takes the hill and last week the Chicago Cubs hurler proved that point with gusto to become the newest National League Player of the Week.

He picked up 2 wins and no losses and rang up 5 strikeouts in 18 innings to finish with a splendid 0.50 ERA.

Thus far this season Brown has posted a 6-0 record, started 7 games, struck out 27 batters in 58.1 innings and compiled a 1.70 ERA.

Monday, May 22nd, 1905: Star of the Week Picked in AL
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask John Anderson, the New York left fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the American League Player of the Week honors.

Anderson piled up 10 hits in 24 at-bats, no home runs and 1 RBIs while hitting .417.

Currently Anderson is hitting .391 and has collected 1 home run, 9 RBIs and scored 14 times, while playing in 24 games.

Mack Explodes After Coakley Walks In 2 To Give Cleveland Game
League Park,Cleveland,Oh.-Apparently feeling the heat from management,Athletics skipper/Gm Connie Mack berated his team after yet another loss, this time the goat was starting pitcher Andy Coakley who with a 4-3 lead in the 5th, walked in two runs handing the Naps the 5-4 victory. The game started out great for Philadelphia, with the boys getting 2 runs on 4 hits in the top of the first inning but starting pitcher Andy Coakley did not have his best stuff and was tagged for 3 runs in the bottom of the inning giving Cleveland a 3-2 lead after one. In the fourth, the A's reclaimed the lead by scoring on an RBI single by Harry Barton and a suicide squeeze by Andy Coakley giving Philadelphia the 4-3 lead.In the 5th though, the Naps lead of the inning with a single then a double giving Cleveland 2nd and third with no outs.Following an intentional walk to Nap Jajoie setting up the force at any base,Coakley inexplicably walked the next two batters virtually handing Cleveland the lead at 5-4.From there on it was curtains,it was as if a giant balloon had bursted, sucking the life out of the Athletics and Cleveland cruised the rest of the way winning by that same 5-4 score. Here's the box score.

                          Athletics Acquire Needham From Boston

Tuesday, May 23rd, 1905: Dygert and Needham Traded
The players apparently knew they were on the trading block, so it did not surprise one of them when he learned that he had been traded to Philadelphia. "Got my bags packed already," he said, when reached for comment. The Athletics will receive 26-year old catcher Tom Needham and $2,000 in cash, while 20-year old reliever Jimmy Dygert will go to the Boston Beaneaters.

This season Needham is batting .212 with 2 home runs.

Waddell Dominates Cleveland With 3 Hit Shutout!
League Park,Cleveland,Oh.-After starting the season 0-5,everyone was asking,"Whats the matter with Rube" well it seems as though Rube was just fine,he just needed to get warmed up.In today's game, the Naps had absolutely no shot against Waddell who allowed only 3 hits,4 walks and 0 runs while fanning in 9 the Athletics 4-0 victory.Waddell's counterpart, the Naps' Addie Joss was also fantastic today, and with the score tied at 0-0 after 6 innings in looked as though nobody would score, but in the 7th,Danny Murphy's one out triple ignited a rally that saw the A's score 4 times on 3 hits a walk and a wild pitch all but ending any chance the Naps had to win this game. There was some bad news to come out of the game though, newly acquired catcher Tom Needham was hit by a pitch in the 5th,knocking him out of action for about a week with a bruised hand. Here's the box score.

"Cy Young is really a good pitcher when he throws strikes early in the count," said his manager after the Boston hurler tossed a complete game 5-hit shutout against the St. Louis Browns.

"I went right after each hitter, trying to get ahead in the count," said Young. "I wanted them to swing the bats and keep my pitch count down. It worked. I felt strong the whole game, even in the last two innings."

Young walked 0 and struck out 4 in the 4-0 victory.

2nd Straight Win Has Athletics Smiling Again!
League Park,Cleveland,Oh.-Its amazing what a little shakeup can do,rookie manager/GM Connie Mack made two small moves the other day and the results were immediate. The first thing he did was trade little used pitcher Jimmy Dygert to the Beaneaters for defensive backstop Tom Needham, secondly he inserted young Bris Lord into right field in favor of veteran Socks Seybold.Although Needham was injured and hasn't been a factor,Lord has been an immediate impact player, making tremendous plays in the field as well as at the plate.Could Seybold be the next to go? Only time will tell.In today's game, the Athletics jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead on RBI hits by Topsy Hartsel,Lave Cross and Bris Lord and considering the Chief was no the mound for Philadelphia, done deal right? Not so fast...The Naps scored once in the 2nd and three times in the 6th to tie the game at 4 after 6.After a scoreless seventh, newly inserted RF Bris Lord singled to start the 8th.After being sacrificed to 2nd,Lord stole third on a gutsy play that gave Philadelphia the break that they needed because the next batter, pitcher Chief Bender brought him home on a sacrifice fly.Entering the 9th brimming with confidence,The Athletics scored twice more on a Monte Cross suicide squeeze followed by a Danny Murphy RBI single putting the game away 7-4.The A's wrap up their 15 game road trip with a visit to Detroit for a 3 game series with the Tigers and rookie phenom Ty Cobb who's struggled so far in his first big league season batting a pedestrian .246.Here's the box score.

Sometimes even Frank Kitson of Detroit isn't sure which pitcher will show up when he takes the mound.

"I've been good sometimes and bad sometimes," he said. This time he looked good and made the New York Highlanders look bad, blanking them by the score of 9-0.

Wednesday, May 24th, 1905: 5 Hits for Cubs Chance
It was a good day for the Cubs at West Side Park II as they clipped the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5. It was tremendous day for Frank Chance, who went on quite a hitting spree with a 5 for 5 barrage.

The Chicago first baseman told reporters after his big 5-hit performance, "I don't have any buzz words. I'm not 'dialed in' or 'in a zone,' as they say. As far as the hitting goes, I try to keep it simple. I try not to look into it too much. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then try to hit it. Today I picked up the spin very well."

                              F. Chance singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 6th, singled in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off R. Caldwell in the 10th.

Chance is hitting .343 so far this season with 13 RBIs and 15 runs scored. He has 35 hits including 2 home runs, 17 walks and .444 OBP.

Thursday, May 25th, 1905: White Sox Blank Boston, Altrock Winner
Chicago pitcher Nick Altrock blanked the Boston Americans 4-0, tossing a 6-hitter while issuing 4 walks and collecting 1 strikeout.

After his sharp shutout performance, he said that he gives a lot of the credit to his batterymate. "Me and him are just locked in out there. He's so great at having a feel for hitters. I couldn't do what I'm doing without him."

This season to date Altrock has a record of 6 wins and 1 loss with a 1.31 ERA, has appeared in 7 games and struck out 21 in 62 innings.

Thursday, May 25th, 1905: Lobert Runs Hit String to 20 Straight Games
                                He did it again!

Hans Lobert got another hit and ran his hitting streak to 20. He collected 1 hit in 3 at-bats, but that wasn't enough to win the game. His Chicago Cubs were defeated 6-1 at West Side Park II by the Philadelphia Phillies.

During the recent streak, the 23-year-old third baseman has remained quiet, sidestepping questions about it with ease. Whether for superstitious reasons or simply in an effort to avoid the spotlight, Lobert preferred to shower praise on his team. He told reporters in the clubhouse after the loss, "We have a better ballclub than we showed today."

"It's amazing to watch him hit right now, but I don't think anybody's really mentioning it," one of his teammates said. "So, we're trying to kind of keep that quiet... don't want to jinx him."
                                H. Lobert struck out in the 1st, grounded out in the 3rd, singled in the 6th and grounded out in the 8th.

Lobert is currently batting .297 with no home runs and 15 RBIs
