Players Of The Week For Week Ending August 27,1905

Monday, August 28th, 1905: Philadelphia's Thomas Snaps Up Player of the Week
His hard work paid off this week. The hardworking Roy Thomas was rewarded with the National League Player of the Week honors.

The scrappy Philadelphia Phillies center fielder hit .520 while collecting 13 hits in 25 at-bats, no home runs and 7 RBIs.

This season in 119 games, Thomas has hit at a .301 clip with 126 hits, no home runs, 35 RBIs and 75 runs scored.

Monday, August 28th, 1905: American League's Hottest Hitter
At the age of 28, George Stone might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The St. Louis left fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days collecting the American League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 12 hits in 27 at-bats, 1 home run and 6 RBIs last week in 6 games.

Presently Stone is batting .307 with 138 hits and 5 home runs. He has knocked in 40 runs and scored 50 times.

      Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

Its Deja Vu All Over Again!
Bennett Park,Detroit,Mi.-Down 2-1 entering the 9th inning, the Athletics once again pulled a rabbit out of their hat when with two men on and nobody out,Danny Murphy slammed a line drive home run to left field giving Philadelphia a shocking come from behind 4-2 victory that allowed them to keep pace with the first place White Sox.For Detroit,it was just more of the same in a season to forget, said manager Bill Armour "Every day,my guys go out and leave their blood on that field so to lose like this over and over is just frustrating"Its been a tough year, but we're just getting started here,we got some kids who can just kill a baseball, especially the kid from Georgia called Cobb,I've never seen anybody like him,he's only 19 and he's one of the best hitters I've ever seen, give him a couple of seasons and I guarantee this whole league will fear him" time will tell coach, time will tell.As far as today's game, the Tigers could have used Cobb against Rube Waddell who was just tremendous today as he collected his team leading 18th victory by allowing 6 hits and 2 runs while fanning 7 in 9 innings pitched. Here's the box score.

Plank Works Overtime To Secure 5-4 Philadelphia Victory
League Park,Cleveland,Oh.-After struggling the last couple of games, the A's bats finally came to life today belting out 13 hits on their way to a 5-4 win in 11 innings.Starting pitcher Eddie Plank did all he could to contain the best hitting team in the AL by going 10 and a third innings while allowing 9 hits,4 walks and 4 earned runs for his 16th win of the season.Weldon Henley got the save, his 10th.The A's winning run came in the 11th inning when following a Danny Murphy double and a Bris Lord Sac bunt,Eddie Plank came to the plate and hit a routine grounder to second baseman Nap Lajoie who uncharacteristicly booted the ball allowing Murphy to score the eventual game winner,it was a tough day for the former Philadelphia hero who besides making the game costing error, also went 0 for 5 at the plate with 2 strikeouts. Here's the box score.

Tuesday, August 29th, 1905: Walsh Hurls Chicago to Shutout Victory
Ed Walsh had an impressive outing today. He hurled the Chicago White Sox to a 6-0 shutout victory over the Washington Senators, yielding 4 hits with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.

"He threw strikes and he was always around the plate," the Washington skipper said. "The ball was doing everything he wanted it to do. We hit some balls hard, but they were all right at the fielders."

This season Walsh has chalked up 1 save, notched a 11-4 record with a 1.64 ERA, allowed 85 hits in his 132 innings of work, struck out 88 and walked 31. Opponents are hitting .186 against the Chicago hurler.

Tuesday, August 29th, 1905: Naps Starting Pitcher Hurt
Cleveland fans will be disappointed to learn that Bill Bernhard developed a damaged meniscus while throwing a pitch in today's game. After the doctor informed the Cleveland Naps manager that Bernhard was expected to miss 1-2 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the starting pitcher could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

His record in 1905 is 7-11 in 19 starts and Bernhard has a 2.21 ERA.

Waddell Melts Down In Relief Appearance As A's Fall To Naps 7-4
League Park,Cleveland,Oh.-Hoping to get an extra days rest for his starters,A's manager Connie Mack started relief man Weldon Henley today against the Naps, but Henley lasted only 5 innings forcing Mack to turn to his workhorse starter Rube Waddell in the hope of getting a few good innings out of him,it didn't happen.Waddell allowed 4 hits,3 walks and 4 earned runs in just two innings of work turning a 3-2 lead into a 7-3 deficit that Philadelphia could never recover from.Said Mack "I knew it was risky but I took a chance and it didn't work out,Rube obviously isn't a reliever and he won't be asked to do it again, thats for sure"Here's the game's box score.

Bender Bombed Early As Athletics Fall 5 Games Out Entering September
League Park,Cleveland,Oh.-Despite grabbing a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half, the Athletics lost to the Naps again as Chief Bender was absolutely terrible allowing 8 hits and 6 runs(4 earned) in just two innings of work in the 8-5 Cleveland victory.Elmer Flick led the charge for the Naps going 3 for 3 with 2 doubles,a walk,an RBI and 2 runs scored,George "Firebrand" Stovall also came up big going 2 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBI.Ironicly, the A's were all over Naps starter Addie Joss who leads the AL in wins, tagging him for 7 hits and 4 runs in two innings but they could do nothing with reliever Hi West who held them to 2 hits and 1 earned run over the final 7 innings. Here's the box score.

Thursday, August 31st, 1905: Wagner Hurt, out 2 Weeks
Pittsburgh fans will be disappointed to learn that Honus Wagner developed a hyperextended knee while colliding with a player at a base in today's game. After the doctor informed the Pittsburgh Pirates manager that Wagner was expected to miss 2 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the shortstop could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

Wagner has a .328 average and a .393 on-base percentage for the year. He has picked up 156 hits, 5 home runs and driven in 66 runs.

Thursday, August 31st, 1905: Zero Hour: Chesbro Blanks Tigers
Sometimes even Jack Chesbro of New York isn't sure which pitcher will show up when he takes the mound.

"I've been good sometimes and bad sometimes," he said. This time he looked good and made the Detroit Tigers look bad, blanking them by the score of 1-0.

Chesbro tossed a 6-hit shutout against them, totaling 2 strikeouts and giving up 3 walks.

This season to date Chesbro has a record of 8 wins and 10 losses with a 2.63 ERA, has appeared in 21 games and struck out 63 in 157.2 innings.

MLB Award Winners For The Month Of August,1905

Friday, September 1st, 1905: Rookie Rapper Reaps NL Honors
A rookie, Del Howard is turning heads around the National League, especially since he just netted August's Rookie of the Month trophy.

The Pittsburgh first baseman batted .277 last month and collected 33 hits, 1 home run, 11 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

This could be the first of many such awards if he continues this torrid hitting, but he's definitely put himself in a good position to claim the Rookie of the Year Award later this year.

For the season, Howard is hitting at a .270 clip with 3 home runs, 31 RBIs and has scored 50 runs. He has 94 hits, 16 walks and a .320 on-base percentage.

Friday, September 1st, 1905: American League Names Rookie of Month
Nig Clarke's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Cleveland catcher has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In August he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .403 with 10 doubles, 1 triple and 1 home run. Clarke also scored 17 times and drove in 12 runs.

So far this season Clarke is batting .285 with 1 home run.

Friday, September 1st, 1905: Phillies Hurler Named NL's Best Starter
Ralph Caldwell hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning National League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In August the Philadelphia starter earned a 4-1 mark in 5 starts. He threw 47.1 innings, struck out 29 and compiled a solid 0.76 ERA.

In 1905 thus far, Caldwell has tossed 117.2 innings in 10 starts, fanned 74 batters, walked 28 and put up a 1.30 ERA with 8 wins and 5 losses.

Friday, September 1st, 1905: AL Announces August's Best Starter
August was a very good month for Eddie Plank of the Philadelphia Athletics. He held opposing hitters for a .180 average and took home the American League Pitcher of the Month award.

In 7 starts he claimed a 5-2 record as he put up a 1.36 ERA and struck out 47 in 66 innings.

So far this season Plank has a 16-10 record with a 1.90 ERA.

Friday, September 1st, 1905: Philadelphia's Thomas Top NL Batter in August
Roy Thomas battered National League pitchers all August and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Major League Baseball long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 31-year-old Thomas told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 27 games, Thomas hit .386 with no home runs, 15 RBIs and scored 22 runs.

In 123 games this year Thomas has posted a .303 average and put up these numbers: no home runs, 37 RBIs and 76 runs scored.

Friday, September 1st, 1905: Boston's Freeman Snags August Batting Title
Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 33-year-old Buck Freeman put together a solid offensive month for Boston and was crowned August's top batter in the American League.

He batted .412 with 1 home run, 16 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

Freeman is presently batting .322 with 5 home runs, 53 runs scored and 44 RBIs. His OBP is .380.
