News Notes And Scores From The Rest Of Today's Games

Friday, August 18th, 1905: New York Comes up Empty Against Altrock
Nick Altrock put a hex on New York in a sparkling 6-0 shutout performance, mesmerizing them on a 1-hit gem.

"I feel good physically," he said. "Everything's comfortable. You should pitch well when that's the case."

It was anything but comfortable for New York.

"Altrock used his changeup very well, very effectively," the opposing manager said. "He threw it in hitter's counts."

The Chicago White Sox hurler fanned 3 and walked 0.

This year Altrock has worked 209.1 innings with 57 strikeouts en route to a 17-7 record and a 1.89 ERA.

Friday, August 18th, 1905: Brooklyn Draws Blanks Against Leever
Sam Leever of the Pittsburgh Pirates was masterful today, pitching a 5-hit 1-0 shutout against the Brooklyn Superbas and giving his bullpen a rest by going the distance.

According to his manager, "He had command of every ball and every pitch... great location, too." Leever had 3 strikeouts and issued 1 walk in an impressive outing.

This season Leever has worked 242.1 innings with 61 strikeouts en route to a 15-10 record and a 2.15 ERA.

Friday, August 18th, 1905: Detroit Loses Cobb
Detroit fans will be disappointed to learn that Ty Cobb developed a herniated disc while colliding with a player at a base in today's game. After the doctor informed the Detroit Tigers manager that Cobb was expected to miss 6-7 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the center fielder could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

Hitting .296 to date, Cobb has no home runs and 31 RBIs. He has played in 102 games.

Murphy's 8th Inning RBI Triple Gives Athletics Thrilling 2-1 Victory
Sportsman's Park,St.Louis,Mo.-A's second baseman Danny Murphy who was mired in a 4 for 33 slump as he headed to the plate with a runner on third and two outs in the top of the 8th inning, came up huge with a wicked RBI triple to the deepest part of Sportsmans Park scoring Monte Cross and giving the Athletics a slim 2-1 lead over the St.Louis Browns. For starter Eddie Plank, thats all that was needed as he finished off St.Louis for his 15th win of the season. As for Danny Hoffman, the streak continues as he lined a base hit to left in his first at bat to run his hitting streak to 24 games. Here's the box score.

Browns Implode In 15th Handing Philadelphia 6-3 Victory
Sportsman's Park,St.Louis,Mo.-Browns reliever Cy Morgan walked two runs in while third baseman Charlie Starr muffed an easy ground ball allowing another as the St.Louis Browns wasted an ********* effort by starter Harry Howell who retired the final 15 batters he faced before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of his 14th and final inning. As for the A's, following 5 good innings by Weldon Henley to start the game,Andy Coakley entered and pitched the final 10 allowing 5 hits and 6 walks but only 2 runs(1 earned) as he improved his record to 14-7 while lowering his ERA to a mind boggling 1.74.As for Danny Hoffman,he did it again, barely.Hoffman lined a double off the center field wall in the top of the 9th inning for his only hit in 8 at bats running his streak to a ML record 25 games. Here's the box score.

White Sox Take Game One Of Critical 3 Game Series 2-1 As Hoffman's Streak Ends At 25
South Side Park,Chicago,Ill.-White Sox starting pitcher Frank Owen had all the answers today holding the Athletics to a lone first inning run on 7 hits and 1 walk as he outdueled young Chief Bender who battled to the bitter end but came up just short, losing a nail biter 2-1.All of the action came ealy on with the A's scoring first on a Tom Needham RBI single in the top of the first inning, but Chicago came right back, tying the game on an RBI single by Nixey Callahan in the second, and then plating the game winner in the third on an Ed Mcfarland RBI single that scored Jiggs Donohue who walked earlier in the inning.Over the final six innings, the Athletics twice had the tying run on third with one out but Owen came up big on both occasions forcing a Danny Murphy pop-up followed by a Bris Lord ground out in the fourth and a terrible Tom Needham strikeout followed by a Harry Davis ground out in the 8th that ended the Athletics chances for victory. As for Danny Hoffman,he finished the day going 0 for 3 with walk ending his hitting streak at 25.The A's are now four games behind Chicago making tomorrows game a must win with Rube Waddell(16-11 2.13 ERA) facing off with White Sox co-ace Nick Altrock(17-7 1.89 ERA.Here's today's box score.

Well, it's now or never man. Time for a run. Let's bring the pennant to Philly. It's going to be tough though, 12.5 out with 50 to play? Slim, but not out of reach. I'm pulling for you!!!!

Although I would love to see the Phillies take the NL pennant,I'm managing that other Philadelphia team who thankfully are in much better shape.

Failed Squeeze Attempt In 9th Proves Suicidal For A's
South Side Park,Chicago,Ill.-For the second time in three games, the Chicago White Sox were able to sneak past the Athletics 2-1 there by increasing their lead to 4 games over the hated bunch from Philly. The play of the game came in the top of the 9th when with Harry Davis on third base and one out,Danny Murphy shockingly laid down an 0-2 squeeze bunt that headed right for White Sox starting pitcher Doc White,Shocked,White gathered himself, darted for the ball, and in one fluid motion grabbed and gunned it to home where simultaneously the ball and Davis reached the plate causing a massive collision with catcher Ed McFarland.Within the mass of humanity, equipment and dust, umpire Joe Williams could distinctly be heard yelling YERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR OUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!! as McFarland lay there flat on his back with ball in hand while Davis dejectedly stood and walked back to the dugout.Adding insult to injury, the Athletics Danny Murphy hoping to take advantage of a dazed Mcfarland, immediately attempted to steal second on the first pitch but was gunned down easily ending the game with Chicago the victors 2-1.Here's the box score.

Walk Off Single Gives Tigers 3-2 Victory
Bennett Park,Detroit,Mi.-Playing in front of home throng of 896,the Detroit Tigers used RBI singles in the 8th and 9th innings to stun the Philadelphia Athletics 3-2.Its these types of games that the Athletics can ill afford to lose if they hope to bring home a pennant.Early on it looked good for the A's who got RBI hits from Lave Cross and Harry davis in the first and third innings to take a 2-1 lead into the 4th,From there though,Tigers starting pitcher George Mullin did just enough to hold the A's scoreless for the rest of the game as he waited for his team to rally. For the game,Mullin allowed 10 hits and 3 walks but just 2 runs while A's starter Andy Coakley allowed 7 hits and only 1 walk for 3 runs. Here's the box score.

Friday, August 25th, 1905: Americans Blank Chicago, Gibson Winner
The White Sox manager was philosophical after his team was shut out by the Boston Americans 4-0.

"It was just one of those games, shake it off and do better next time," he said.

Norwood Gibson blanked them on 1 hit with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.

"I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs. They were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Gibson said.

"I set them up pretty good, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one."

Checking out his stats for the season, Gibson has notched 13 wins and 3 losses in 16 starts, 2.24 ERA and struck out 53 batters in 136.1 innings.
