Players Of The Week For The Week Ending July 16,1905

Monday, July 17th, 1905: Super Swinger Snags NL Player of the Week
At the age of 28, Ginger Beaumont might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Pittsburgh center fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days collecting the National League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 11 hits in 25 at-bats, 1 home run and 2 RBIs last week in 6 games.

Hitting .304 to date, Beaumont has 4 home runs and 29 RBIs. He has played in 83 games.

Monday, July 17th, 1905: Star of the Week Picked in AL
Philadelphia's Andy Coakley is only 22, but last week he put up numbers that would make a seasoned veteran proud. That's why the young hurler earned the American League Player of the Week award.

Coakley tallied 2 wins, 3 strikeouts in 18 innings and a 0.50 ERA for the week.

In the current season in 17 starts, Andy Coakley has a record of 11-5 with 59 strikeouts in 145.2 innings and a 1.73 ERA.

Gettysburg Eddie Tames The Tigers 2-0
Bennett Park,Detroit,Mi.-In a hotly contested well played ballgame, the Philadelphia Athletics behind the excellent pitching of Eddie Plank blanked the Detroit Tigers 2-0.Entering the seventh still tied 0-0,the A's executed a perfect suicide squeeze to score the first run of the game and followed it with a Danny Hoffman RBI single to right giving Philadelphia the 2-0 lead it would never relinquish. With the win,Eddie Plank improves to 11-7 while his counterpart "Wabash George" Mullin falls to an ugly 5-16.Here's the box score.

Tuesday, July 18th, 1905: Washington's Hill to Miss Season
Hunter Hill has to call it a season. The Washington Senators third baseman sustained a season-ending injury against the Chicago White Sox and will not play again this year according to club doctors. Hill was injured while colliding with a player at a base. His doctors diagnosed it as a fractured ankle and stated that he would not be able to play for 4 months.

Thus far in 1905 Hill is batting .216 with no home runs, 12 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

Tuesday, July 18th, 1905: Mertes Goes 5-5 Against Pittsburgh
5 times is a charm -- at least in the world of baseball. When a player gets 5 or more hits in a game, he is honored in the record book and the latest honoree is Sam Mertes of the New York Giants. He tore up the Pittsburgh Pirates to the tune of 5 hits in 5 at-bats in the New York 9-2 win today at Polo Grounds III.

"Mertes was a tough out today," the Pittsburgh manager said to the press in the postgame interview. "He hit some very good pitches with that quick bat of his. Not an easy out, that's for sure."

        S. Mertes singled in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off S. Leever in the 2nd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 6th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

For the year Mertes is batting .308 with 102 hits and 5 home runs. He has scored 50 times and driven in 37.

Late Surge Pushes Athletics Past Browns 9-5

Sportsman's Park,St.Louis Mo.-Down a run heading into the 8th,the A's exploded for 6 runs over the final two frames to defeat the Browns 9-5 going away.Early on it looked like another low scoring pitchers duel with the A's up 2-1 after 5.But in the 6th,a 3 run double by Browns pitcher Frank Glade gave St.Louis a 4-2 lead changing the complexion of the game. The Athletics chipped away, scoring a run in the 7th and the 8th to tie the game at 4 entering the 9th inning. In the 9th,the Athletics finally found their stride scoring five times on three hits and three walks to put the game away, the Browns did get a run themselves in the 9th but it wasn't enough as the A's went on to win 9-5.Reliever Weldon Henley was credited with the win while Frank Glade took the loss. Here's the box score.

Sportsman's Park,St.Louis Mo.-A's starting pitcher Rube Waddell still can not find the groove he was in earlier in the year as he labored through 8 tough innings in Philadelphia's 6-4 loss to St.Louis.Waddell allowed 9 hits,2 walks and 6 runs(4 earned) as his record drops to 11-10.Up 2-1 entering the bottom of the 4th,Rube began to struggle allowing three hits and two run scoring walks,as St.Louis took full advantage of everything given them scoring 4 times in the inning to take the lead for good. Here's the box score.

Friday, July 21st, 1905: Pirates Leever Blanks Phillies
Sam Leever was downright nasty in pitching a 4-0 shutout against Philadelphia. His splitter was diving, his slider was breaking and the Phillies were swinging and looking bad. In the solid 5-hit shutout the Pirates hurler chalked up 2 strikeouts and 1 walk in a strong outing.

"As the game went on, he got stronger," his manager said. "I thought he really turned it up a notch in the eighth and ninth and probably threw his best breaking balls in those two innings. They put a lot of balls in play early in the count because he was throwing strikes."

Leever has posted a 13-8 record in 1905 with a 2.22 ERA. Teams are hitting .222 against him and he has rung up 43 strikeouts in 190.1 innings.

Bris Lord Sparks Athletics In 7-3 Come from Behind Victory

South Side Park,Chicago,Ill.-In an amazing display of guts, the A's came from behind twice before finally defeating the White Sox 7-3 in 11 innings. The Sox built a 2-0 lead early on thanks to an RBI double and an RBI ground out by George Davis in the first and third innings respectively. In the 6th though, the A's finally got on the board on a Danny Hoffman RBI single making the score 2-1.In the 8th,Danny Hoffman did it again, singling home Bris Lord for the second time in the game to tie the game at 2.In the bottom of the inning though,Chicago came right back to take the lead again thanks to a pinch hit RBI single by Fielder Jones to make it 3-2.In the 9th,with one out and a runner on third,A's second baseman Danny Murphy laid down the perfect squeeze bunt to tie the game again at 3.The score would remain the same until the 11th where the A's got four hits in the inning including an RBI single by Topsy Hartsel and a 2 run double by Bris Lord giving Philadelphia a 7-4 lead that would be the margin of victory. Here's the box score.

"That was one of my best outings," said Barney Pelty. "I was worried a lot in the bullpen. My ball wasn't quite right. Luckily, it can be two different worlds -- the bullpen and the game. Once I stepped on the field, it all fell into place."

It was an impressive start for the Browns hurler. He blanked the Highlanders 3-0 on a strong 4-hitter while ringing up 5 strikeouts and doling out no walks.

His record in 1905 is 9-12 in 22 starts and Pelty has a 3.26 ERA.

Sox Roar Back To Stun Athletics 6-5

South Side Park,Chicago,Ill.-In a stunning turn of events, the Philadelphia Athletics blew a 5-0 7th inning lead as the fell once again to Chicago 6-5.In the top of the first, everything was going the A's way as they used three doubles and a single to take a quick 3-0 lead on Frank Smith and the White Sox.The A's struck again in the 5th and 6th,expanding the lead to 5 as Chicago could get nothing going off of Chief Bender. In the 7th though, the Sox exploded for 5 hits and 4 trimming Philadelphia's lead to 5-4 runs and chasing the Chief in the process.Following a scoreless 8th,A's reliever Weldon Henley got two quick outs in the 9th and it looked as though Philadelphia would survive but a walk followed by an error on a pickoff attempt followed by two straight RBI singles gave the Sox a shocking victory that stunned Connie Mack's boys. Here's the box score.

Thursday, July 27th, 1905: Dobbs Slaps 6 Hits
Brooklyn center fielder John Dobbs could do no wrong in today's 11-9 win over the Cardinals as he collected 6 hits.

"In every one of his at-bats things were in his favor... he got hitter's counts," the skipper of the Cardinals said to the press corps after the game.

Dobbs agreed. "The key is getting ahead. Once you get ahead, it makes it a lot easier because you get a better pitch to hit. You know the pitcher has to come in with it. And you're ready."

                            J. Dobbs hit an RBI single in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, grounded out in the 6th, singled in the 7th, singled in the 10th, hit an RBI single in the 11th, singled in the 14th and hit a three-run home run off S. McDougal in the 16th.

In the 1905 season Dobbs is batting .251 with 88 hits and 3 home runs. He has scored 34 times and batted in 27.

Looks like Ol' Rube is nearing the end of the line. He's been kind of inconsistant the last few games.

On the other hand, Eddie Plank is pitching great for you but he's in a bunch of nail biters because of lack of run support.

Rube really is an enigma,he has a WHIP of .980 and an OAVG of .198 as well as 176 K's but he just seems to always give up that back breaking hit,he's really frustrating. As far as "Gettysburg Eddie" he's one of my favorites on the team,Mr. Steady.Overall,I've really grown attached to this team.I wasn't sure if I was going to like playing in the dead ball era with it being so long ago and all but I have to say,its been a blast and besides that, the competition is rough.Even the bad teams are capable of sweeping you in a series.
