A's Crush White Sox 10-0 As Waddell Tosses 5 Hitter
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In what can only be described as a statement game, the Philadelphia Athletics made it quite clear to the Chicago White Sox that they were not about to roll over and die as the A's absolutely buried the Pale Hose 10-0.A's second baseman Danny Murphy led the way going 3 for 4 with a double 3 RBI and 2 runs scored,Topsy Hartsel was also on fire going 2 for 4 with a double a home run,3 RBI and 2 runs scored.Overall, the Athletics had 14 hits with everyone except Rube Waddell getting at least one hit, speaking of Waddell, big Rube was absolutely dominant on the hill today pitching 9 shutout innings while allowing 5 hits and 2 walks to go with 4 strikeouts as he improved his record to 13-10.For Chicago,player/manager Fielder Jones went right back to Doc White on one days rest and the results were not so good as White allowed 10 hits and 7 earned runs in just 4 and two thirds innings of work. Here's the box score.

It was anything but comfortable for Cincinnati.

Tuesday, August 1st, 1905: July's Best Rookie Named by NL
In July, Del Howard knocked National League pitchers all over the ballpark all month long and put up numbers good enough to be voted the Rookie of the Month.

Last month the 27-year-old Pittsburgh first baseman played in 28 games and hit .274 with 5 doubles, 1 triple and 2 home runs. Howard also scored 15 times and drove in 11 runs.

Thus far in 1905 Howard is batting .266 with 2 home runs, 20 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

Tuesday, August 1st, 1905: AL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Nig Clarke's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Cleveland catcher has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In July he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .333 with 8 doubles, 2 triples and no home runs. Clarke also scored 9 times and drove in 14 runs.

This season in 84 games Clarke is batting .254 with no home runs, 35 RBIs and has scored 30 times.

Tuesday, August 1st, 1905: NL Announces July's Best Starter
Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Deacon Phillippe still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in July. The 33-year-old starter for Pittsburgh was named National League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 7 wins and 1 loss with 34 strikeouts in his 8 starts, putting up a fine 1.25 ERA in 72 innings of work.

On his stats sheet this season Phillippe shows a 15-10 record, 25 starts, 220 innings, 92 strikeouts and a 2.41 ERA.

Tuesday, August 1st, 1905: July's Top Starter is Joss
Addie Joss took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the American League Pitcher of the Month award for July.

The 25-year-old Naps starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 5-2 won-lost record in 7 starts. He has fanned 27 batters in 64 innings and sports a 1.13 ERA.

In 24 starts this season Joss has registered a 18-6 record and a 1.84 ERA.

Tuesday, August 1st, 1905: Beaumont Claims NL Batter of the Month Award
Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 29-year-old Ginger Beaumont put together a solid offensive month for Pittsburgh and was crowned July's top batter in the National League.

He batted .379 with 2 home runs, 13 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

Beaumont is batting .326 this year with 5 home runs, 38 RBIs and 61 runs scored. He has 125 hits in 383 at-bats.

Tuesday, August 1st, 1905: AL's Best Batter Selected
Sam Crawford battered American League pitchers all July and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Major League Baseball long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 25-year-old Crawford told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 27 games, Crawford hit .364 with 1 home run, 13 RBIs and scored 16 runs.

Currently Crawford is batting .294 with 1 home run and 38 RBIs.

                        Piano Mover Smith Silences Athletics

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In a playoff like atmosphere, the Chicago White Sox were able to take down Eddie Plank and the A's 3-1,increasing their lead back to seven and a half games. With the score tied at one in the top of the 8th inning,A's catcher Tom Needham made a critical error when with the Sox attempting a double steal,Needham threw the ball into left field allowing Nixey Callahan to score the go ahead run to the dismay of the Philadelphia faithful. The White Sox added another run in the 9th on a clutch two out RBI single by Gus Dundon making it a 3-1 game. From there,Frank "Piano Mover" Smith took over retiring the A's in order in the final two innings to record his 15th win against only 2 defeats. For the A's Eddie Plank,it was just another case of pitching well enough to win but falling short anyway, over his last 9 starts,Plank has gotten absolutely no run support with his team scoring an average of just 1.77 runs per game in that span.To his credit though,Eddie has taken it all in stride saying "Thats just the way it goes sometimes, all I'm concerned about is going out there and giving it everything I have every time out.I know if I do that,we'll have a good chance to win and thats what its all about,winning.20 wins dosen't mean a thing if your sitting home come October" With that attitude, its no wonder Plank is one of the most popular players in the clubhouse. The teams will wrap up their series tomorrow with the A's Andy Coakley(11-5 1.62 ERA) facing off against the Sox Frank Owen(10-10 2.66 ERA).Here's today's box score.

Tuesday, August 1st, 1905: Powell Hurt, out 2 Weeks
"I'm frustrated right now," said New York starting pitcher Jack Powell. "I can't help this team by sitting on the bench or in the training room." Unfortunately for the Highlanders, that's where he will be spending the next 2 weeks. Powell suffered a strained tricep tendon in today's game against Cleveland while throwing a pitch. "Believe me," he said, "I won't be out a day longer than I have to be."

Checking out his stats for the season, Powell has racked up 12 wins and 8 losses in 23 starts, 2.27 ERA and struck out 68 batters in 178.2 innings.

Tuesday, August 1st, 1905: Willis Whitewashes St. Louis
Vic Willis came out firing strikes and when the game ended, the Beaneaters hurler had struck out 3 in leading Boston over the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0. Willis allowed just 2 hits in the ballgame.

This year Willis has gone 10-16 with an ERA of 2.96 and has 80 strikeouts in 203.2 innings.

                          Back Where We Started

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Following the White Sox 5-2 victory over the A's today, the teams are right back to where they were 11 days ago when the teams started this extended 8 game series against each other. The series was a bittersweet one for the Athletics who outscored the Sox 34-21 over the 8 games but have absolutely nothing to show for it besides the knowledge that they are at the least just as good as Chicago. As far as today's game,Chicago got a fantastic effort from starter Frank Owen who held the Athletics scoreless through seven innings as his team was busy building a 4 run lead on the A's Andy Coakley. In the 8th,the Athletics closed the gap to 4-2 on an RBI fielders choice by Schoolboy Knight followed later on by an RBI single by Monte Cross.Up two entering the top of the 9th,Sox pitcher Frank Owen drove the dagger in with a two out RBI single increasing the Chicago lead to 5-2.The A's went down in order in their half of the 9th giving Owen his 11th victory and 18th complete game.As for Andy Coakley, his record falls to 11-6 following his 8 innings of work in which he allowed 6 hits a walk and 4 earned runs to go with 4 K's.The Athletics welcome 18 year old phenom Ty Cobb and the rest of his Detroit Tiger teammates for a 4 game set this weekend. Here's today's box score.

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In a game the Athletics had to have, the Tigers built a 4 run 7th inning lead, only to see the A's tie it in the bottom of the 7th and take the lead in the 8th giving Philadelphia the 5-4 victory.A's starter Chief Bender despite struggling with his control for most of the game, came up big when he had to,striking out Charile Hickman to end the game with Chicago leaving the tying run just 90 feet away.Offensively,Topsy Hartsel supplied the game winning hit with a two out RBI single in the bottom of the 8th that scored Harry Davis and gave the A's the 5-4 lead that they rode to the finish line. Here's the box score.

Waddell Runs Scoreless Inning Streak to 25 In Shutout Of Tigers
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Philadelphia Athletics pitcher Rube Waddell has done it again, shutting out the Tigers 2-0 while running his scoreless inning streak to 25 proving once again to his detractors, that there's no better pitcher in the league when he's on his game.Said his manager Connie Mack: "There's just nobody like him,"He's got the fastest deepest drop I've ever seen, not to mention that fast one".During the game today,Rube was completely focused(a rarity to be sure),allowing only three hits and 0 walks while striking out 7. His advisary Frank Kitson was no slouch either, allowing only 6 hits while taking a shutout into the 6th where Lave Cross' RBI single brought home the first run of the game.Kitson would allow just one more run,an RBI single by Danny Hoffman but his effort was wasted as the Tigers could do nothing with Waddell. The teams are right back at it tomorrow with the A's Eddie Plank(11-9 2.08 ERA) facing off with the Tigers "Big" Jim Wiggs(6-5 2.17 ERA) Here's the box score.

Friday, August 4th, 1905: Beany Jacobson Sidelined for Season
The season is apparently over for Beany Jacobson. The Washington Senators medical staff informed the club that the starting pitcher will be out at least 7 months with a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament. Jacobson was hurt in the game against Chicago while throwing a pitch. The doctors did not think he would recover prior to the end of the season.

This season to date, Jacobson has fashioned a 3-5 mark and 1.87 ERA in 72.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .227 against him and he has logged 20 strikeouts.

Saturday, August 5th, 1905: Gibson Spins Shutout Against Naps
Norwood Gibson was stingy with runs in his latest outing against the Naps. He shut them out 8-0 on 4 hits with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk.

The Boston manager said, "Norwood was very aggressive tonight. He threw everything he had with a lot of confidence."

The losing manager had praise, too. "He was throwing strikes with all his pitches and mixing it up well. Gibson has a sneaky fastball, and whatever that offspeed pitch was, it was keeping our timing off."

In the current season in 13 starts, Norwood Gibson has a record of 10-3 with 42 strikeouts in 109.1 innings and a 2.55 ERA.
