Waddell Blanks Senators With 2 Hit 9 Strikeout Performance
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-A's starter Rube Waddell was in peak form today, holding the visiting Senators to just 2 hits enroute to a 3-0 shutout victory. That type of performance was exactly what the hometown boys needed because Washington hurler Tom Hughes was also phenomenal, allowing only 5 hits, but a rough 4th inning in which he allowed 3 of those hits including the killer,a two run double by Topsy Hartsel spelled doom for the Senators ace.For those of you who have jumped on the Eddie Collins bandwagon(we have) he quietly went 2 for 4 with a stolen base improving his average to .476 Here's the box score

Plank Falters In 7-3 Loss To Highlanders
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In a wildly exciting game,Hal Chase's two out 2 run bases loaded double in the top of the 9th followed by an Andy Coakley wild pitch turned a one run ballgame into a convincing 7-3 road victory for the New York Highlanders.A's starter Eddie Plank(1-1) had a tough day, allowing 12 hits and 4 runs(2 earned) in just six innings while his counterpart Jack "Red" Powell(2-0) fared much better going the distance while allowing 10 hits and 3 runs to remain undefeated.Chase,New York's star first baseman was a handful all day as he went 3 for 5 with 2 doubles,2 RBI,a run scored and a stolen base for the victors. Here's the box score.

Collins And Bender Star In 7-1 Rout Of Rival New Yorkers
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-A's rookie shortstop Eddie Collins was once again all over the basepaths as he went 3 for 4 with a walk,3 runs scored and a stolen base in Philadelphia's 7-1 victory over the Highlanders. While Collins was terrorizing the Highlanders with his bat,Chief Bender(2-0) broke their will with an amazing command of his pitches going 9 strong innings in which he allowed only 7 hits and 1 earned run to go with 6 strikeouts.Following an off day tomorrow, the Athletics will host New York twice more before welcoming in Boston and then Washington for the final two series of the homestand. Here's the box score.

At Exposition Park Bob Ganley of the Pittsburgh Pirates put on a hitting clinic today against Cincinnati. He banged out 5 hits in 6 at-bats and mauled Reds pitching, but came up short in the win department.

In spite of his standout 5-hit performance, the Reds captured the game by the score of 7-6.

"Hey, it's great to get that many hits in a game, but it would have been nice to win the game, too," were his words in the postgame interview.

        B. Ganley flied out in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, doubled in the 9th and singled in the 11th.

And that's what George Mullin did as he led the Tigers to a 6-0 shutout victory over the White Sox.

"I thought he put the ball where he wanted to," the Chicago manager said. "And that's just about the whole secret to pitching."

Mullin yielded 4 hits and had 3 strikeouts and 1 walk in a standout performance

Saturday, April 21st, 1906: Pirates Beaumont Hurt

Wid Conroy minutes before hitting 2 run 9th inning triple

Columbia Park,Phila.Pa.-Philadelphia Athletics rookie reliever "Colby Jack" Coombs entered today's game with runners on first and second and one out in the 9th and the A's clinging to a 4-2 lead.Coombs immediately got himself into more trouble allowing a Frank LaPorte RBI single followed by a base on balls that loaded the bases for pitcher Jack Chesboro.Chesboro proceeded to fly out to deep left tying the score at 4 while at the same time giving Coombs a chance to escape the inning tied."Colby Jack" could not take advantage though as Wid Conroy slammed a triple down the right field line bringing in both New York runners while giving the Highlanders the runs they would need to win the game 6-4.Charged with the loss,Coombs record now falls to 0-2 with an embarassing 6.00 ERA.All the news was not bad however,A's starting pitcher Jimmy Dygert pitched very well in his first start allowing 4 hits and 4 runs(3 earned) while striking out 7 in 8 and a 1/3 IP.Also,Eddie Collins continued to obliterate the ball going 3 for 4 with 3 doubles. For New York, besides Conroy's heroics,Hal Chase played well going 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Here's the box score.

                    Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

Waddell Goes To 2-0 But Relievers Continue To Struggle
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Once again, the Philadelphia Athletics relief corps faltered, with Mike Cunningham allowing 4 hits and 3 earned runs in just two thirds of an inning as he turned a 7-1 laugher into a very uncomfortable 7-5 game with the tying runs on base and two outs.Thankfully though disaster was averted when Weldon Henley struck out Highlander pinch hitter Jimmy Barrett to end the game.Early on,it was all roses as Rube Waddell dominated from the mound, allowing 7 hits and 2 earned runs in 8 innings pitched while the offense behind Bris Lord and Harry Davis built a comfortable 7-0 lead.In the 7th,the Highlanders finally got on the board on a Wid Conroy RBI double that making it a 7-1 game that still looked all but over. When asked about the problems in the bullpen,Connie Mack replied curtly, "Obviously there's problems there".Eh,you think? Here's the box score.

Tuesday, April 24th, 1906: Moxie Manuel Injured, Out for Season
The season is finished for Moxie Manuel of the Washington Senators. The club announced today that he will forego the rest of the year because of injury. The Senators reliever suffered a torn labrum while throwing a pitch in a recent game against the Boston Americans. Team doctors said it would take at least 8 months to heal.

Tuesday, April 24th, 1906: Americans Blank Washington, Tannehill Winner
Jesse Tannehill of the Boston Americans gave the Senators a steady diet of fine pitches and he walked off the mound with a complete-game shutout. He blanked them 6-0 on 2 hits with a total of 2 strikeouts and no walks.

The Boston manager said, "Tannehill was on quite a roll. He gets great late movement and he doesn't give in to the hitters."

                      A's Falter Late Again,Lose 5-3 To Boston

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In what is now becoming a disturbing and potentially devastating trend, the Philadelphia Athletics once again took a lead into the 8th inning only to see it go up in smoke when starter Eddie Plank allowed 4 eighth inning runs on his way to a 5-3 defeat.Plank was tremendous through 7 as the A's held a 2-0 lead thanks to a third inning Danny Murphy RBI single followed later in the inning by a Bill Dinneen wild pitch that scored Murphy who despite the loss played well. The score would remain the same until the 8th where the Americans lead off the inning with walk and two straight singles making it a 2-1 game with runners on first and second and no outs.Plank then got Red Morgan to fly out to shallow left for the first out of the inning. The next batter,Chet Chadbourne, grounded hard to third baseman Rube Oldring who in his haste misplayed the ball allowing a run to score while leaving runners on the corners.Following that, Boston third baseman Bob Unglaub slammed a double down the left field line scoring two runs and giving the Americans their first lead of the game,4-2.Both teams added a run in the 9th and the game would end with Boston the 5-3 victors. Here's the box score.

Wednesday, April 25th, 1906: McIntyre Clips Superbas For Cycle!
"Some days everything falls in place and you have an almost perfect day."
Those were the comments from Boston left fielder Matty McIntyre today as his 5-5 day included the cycle, a baseball rarity.

"He sure was a wrecking ball today," said one teammate after the Beaneaters tamed the Superbas 9-8 at South End Grounds III.

                      M. McIntyre singled in the 2nd, hit a two-run double in the 3rd, singled in the 6th, hit an RBI triple in the 8th and hit a solo-shot off H. Knolls in the 10th.

So far in 1906 McIntyre has hit .310 with 1 home run and 6 RBIs. He has played in 11 games and scored 6 times.

Wednesday, April 25th, 1906: Donahue Tags Browns 5 Hits
Next time the Browns might think twice about pitching to Jiggs Donahue. Today at South Side Park II the Chicago first baseman really burned St. Louis pitching, going 5-for-7 in the White Sox 3-2 triumph.

"When he's seeing the ball well," his skipper told reporters, "he can probably stroke a base hit blindfolded."

                      J. Donahue singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, struck out in the 8th, singled in the 11th, singled in the 13th and hit an RBI double in the 15th.

Thus far this season in 8 games Donahue is batting .333 with no home runs, 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored. He has 13 hits in 39 at-bats.

Jekyll And Hyde Athletics Pound Americans 12-3

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Using a balanced attack in which 5 players had 2 hits, the Philadelphia A's destroyed the Boston Americans 12-3 on the strength of 13 hits and 7 costly Boston errors. The beneficiary of all of this offense was of course A's starter Chief Bender who despite having a big lead early, was able to bear down and go the distance while allowing only 5 hits and 3 earned runs as he improves his record to a perfect 3-0.Here's the box score.

A's Take Down Americans In a 6-5 Barnburner
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In a fantastic back and forth affair, the Philadelphia Athletics behind the aggressive play of Eddie Collins were just able to defeat the Boston Americans 6-5.Early on,it was all Philadelphia as the A's built a 5-1 lead after 4 thanks to RBI hits by Bris Lord,Eddie Collins, and a rejuvinated Socks Seybold. The Americans came storming back though, scoring 3 in the 7th and 1 in the 8th to tie the game at 5 after 8.Following a perfect top of the 9th by A's reliever Jack Coombs,Eddie Collins led off the bottom of the inning with a single to right and then a quick steal of second giving Philadelphia a runner in scoring position with no outs.Danny Murphy then came to the plate and hit a chopper off of the plate that catcher Charlie Armbruster threw into right field allowing Collins to easily score the game winner. Here's the box score.

Friday, April 27th, 1906: Hess Struts Stuff in Detroit Win
"That was one of my best outings," said Otto Hess. "I was worried a lot in the bullpen. My ball wasn't quite right. Luckily, it can be two different worlds -- the bullpen and the game. Once I stepped on the field, it all fell into place."

It was an impressive start for the Naps hurler. He blanked the Tigers 7-0 on a strong 2-hitter while ringing up 2 strikeouts and doling out 2 walks.

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Thanks to clutch two out back to back RBI singles by Topsy Hartsel and Doc Powers, the Philadelphia Athletics were once again able to defeat the Boston Americans for their third straight victory 4-2.Today's game was a near mirror image of yesterday's game where the A's broke out on top early, were tied late, and then won it with clutch hitting in their last at bat.Starting pitcher Rube Waddell was once again phenomenal, allowing just 6 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 7.Here's the box score.
