Smith Outduels Coakley As Chicago Wins 3-1
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In a World Series like atmosphere, the Chicago White Sox and the Philadelphia Athletics battled 20 MPH winds as well as each other in a well played baseball game that was won by the White Sox 3-1.Sox starter Frank Smith was absolutely terriffic,as he held the A's to just 3 hits and 1 earned run outdueling the A's Andy Coakley who allowed 8 hits and 3 runs(2 earned) over 8 innings.Clinging to a 1-0 lead in the 6th,the White Sox got a huge RBI sacrifice Fly by George Davis that was followed by an RBI single by Ed McFarland which gave Chicago a 3-0 lead they would never relinqiush. As we enter the final week of the season,Chicago now holds a 4 game lead over the A's with just 6 to play which barring a complete collapse is nearly insurmountable.Things are much more interesting over in the National League where the Cubs are holding a slim one game lead over the Giants with 6 games left. Here's today's box score.

News Notes And Scores From The Rest Of Today's Games

Saturday, September 30th, 1905: Eubank Shuts out Americans
"That's one thing that has never changed in this game -- pitching can control hitting," the Tigers manager told reporters after today's game.

The Americans ran into a buzzsaw as John Eubank cut them down to size 2-0 with a 6-hit shutout.

His skipper added, "He knows exactly what he's doing. He's not going to throw you a good pitch until you make him throw one."

In the complete game whitewash the Detroit hurler doled out 2 walks and registered 1 strikeout.

In the postgame press conference his catcher said, "John goes out there and just goes about his business. I don't think he gets too concerned about what's going on. You can call any pitch and you know where he's going to be."

Eubank also got some praise from the Boston manager.

"He really kept us in check today. Everything looked to be moving. Seemed like the pitch was right down the middle and it went over down and away... we took some pathetic swings."

This year in 18 starts, Eubank has recorded 10 wins and absorbed 6 losses. He has pitched 163.1 innings, allowed 156 hits, struck out 28 and has a 2.98 ERA.

Players Of The Week For Week Ending October 1,1905

Monday, October 2nd, 1905: Week's Premier Player: St. Louis's Dunleavy
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Jack Dunleavy, the St. Louis right fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the National League Player of the Week honors.

Dunleavy piled up 12 hits in 28 at-bats, no home runs and 1 RBIs while hitting .429.

This year Dunleavy is batting .265 with 121 hits and 1 home run. He has scored 52 times and has batted in 43 runs.

Monday, October 2nd, 1905: AL's Top Player, Lajoie of Cleveland
Nap Lajoie is respected by most Cleveland Naps fans for his no-frills style of play. The 31-year-old second baseman went about his business with vigor last week to grab the American League Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .429 average (12-28) with no home runs, 6 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

This year Lajoie has batted at a .319 pace with 144 hits, 3 home runs, 58 RBIs and scored 52 times.

Players Of The Month For The Month Of September,1905

Sunday, October 1st, 1905: NL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Bill Hinchman earned September's Rookie of the Month honors in the National League for last month's performance. The boyish Cincinnati left fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Hinchman hit .377 with no home runs, 15 RBIs and 10 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

This year Hinchman is batting .262 with 1 home run and 39 RBIs. In 123 games he has scored 36 times.

Sunday, October 1st, 1905: American League Names Rookie of Month
A boyish Denny Sullivan emerged as the latest American League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Washington deserved the honor, batting .338 with 1 home run and 7 RBI. Is the month of September a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Sullivan enjoy the limelight.

This year Sullivan is batting .272 with 1 home run and 23 RBIs.

Sunday, October 1st, 1905: NL Selects Brown September's Best Starter
A 6-0 record with a 1.58 ERA is a pretty good month for most any pitcher. The National League thought it was worthy of an award and named Mordecai Brown, starter for the Chicago Cubs, September's Pitcher of the Month.

He also held the opposition to a .263 average while posting 15 strikeouts in 57 innings.

In 33 starts this season Brown has crafted a 22-9 record with a 2.04 ERA

Sunday, October 1st, 1905: White Nabs AL #1 Pitcher Award
Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Doc White still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in September. The 26-year-old starter for Chicago was named American League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 6 wins and no losses with 26 strikeouts in his 7 starts, putting up a fine 1.20 ERA in 60 innings of work.

In 38 starts this year White has posted 19 wins while suffering 16 losses. He has pitched 326 innings, allowed 300 hits, struck out 129 and has a 2.15 ERA.

Sunday, October 1st, 1905: NL's Best Batter Announced
When Frank Schulte stepped up to the plate in September, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the National League Batter of the Month award.

The young Chicago left fielder posted a .295 batting average with 4 home runs, 16 RBIs and scored 21 runs. Schulte also worked pitchers for 9 walks to post a .364 on-base percentage.

Thus far this year Schulte is hitting .289 with 11 home runs, 61 RBIs and 71 runs scored.

Sunday, October 1st, 1905: Murphy Grabs AL Best Batter Award for September
Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 29-year-old Danny Murphy put together a solid offensive month for Philadelphia and was crowned September's top batter in the American League.

He batted .376 with 2 home runs, 22 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

This season in 147 games, Murphy has hit at a .266 clip with 148 hits, 5 home runs, 74 RBIs and 67 runs scored.

A's Score Twice In 8th To Sneak Past St.Louis 4-3
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Down 3-2 after 7 and a half,it looked as though the Athletics would make it easy for Chicago but Harry Davis had other ideas as he blasted a one out game tying home run that suddenly gave Philadelphia new life. The A's then went on to take the lead on a Tom Needham RBI single that scored Monte Cross who singled and then went to second on an Emil Frisk error one batter previously. From there,Chief Bender made sure the lead stuck, setting the Browns down 1-2-3 in the 9th securing his 21st victory of the season. Here's the box score.

A's Fall To St.Louis Handing Chicago AL Crown
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Despite a heroic effort by Rube Waddell, the A's could not muster any offense off of Browns starter Barney Pelty as they go out quietly 3-1.The difference in the game was the Browns first inning where they got a 2 run single from Emil Frisk followed later by a Lave Cross error that allowed another run giving St.Louis a 3-0 lead after one half inning. From there it was all pitching with Philadelphia's only run coming on a throwing error by catcher Frank Roth on a Harry Davis steal attempt of third. Here's the box score.

Looking at his season stats, Leahy has compiled a .270 batting average and a .316 on-base percentage, while hitting no home runs and driving in 37 runs.

Wednesday, October 4th, 1905: Year Over for Reds Kelley
The season is ending on a bad note for Joe Kelley, left fielder for the Cincinnati Reds. It was announced today that he will miss the rest of the season because of injury. Kelley was hurt against the St. Louis Cardinals while colliding with a player at a base. He suffered a fractured hand and will be out for at least 2 weeks.

This season Kelley is batting .259 with 43 hits and no home runs. He has scored 17 times and has 19 RBI.

Wednesday, October 4th, 1905: Sudhoff at His Best, Whips Athletics
"I hope we miss him next time," the Philadelphia manager said. "Sudhoff certainly pitched a strong game against us today. He was in a groove, throwing everything for strikes. Throwing hard. Changing speeds."

St. Louis starter Willie Sudhoff tamed the Philadelphia Athletics 1-0 with a 4-hit shutout, finishing the game with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks in a sharp outing.

"I enjoy facing a team like that where I can get an out on one, two or three pitches," Sudhoff said. "It gives me a chance to be a lot more aggressive."

This season Sudhoff has worked 298.1 innings with 80 strikeouts en route to a 12-20 record and a 2.75 ERA.

Wednesday, October 4th, 1905: Pirates Shut out Beaneaters, Flaherty Winner
Patsy Flaherty had the Boston Beaneaters dancing to his tune today with a sparkling 6-0 shutout performance for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He gave up 2 hits and collected 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Boston hitters were bewildered throughout the game by his delivery.

The opposing manager said, "When you face a guy who hides the ball like he does, it takes a couple of at-bats to try to find his release point. We just never figured him out."

His record this season is 19-14 in 35 starts and Flaherty has a 2.43 ERA

Wednesday, October 4th, 1905: Killian Fashions Shutout Against Cincinnati
Ed Killian was sneaky fast, on the mark and hard to hit today. He blanked the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 on 4 hits and had 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.

"You know what he's going to throw. You know what to expect. And you still can't hit it," the Cincinnati skipper told reporters after the shutout loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

"He just had a real deceiving fastball today and he was throwing it for strikes."

Over the season Killian has thrown 316 innings and dished out 92 strikeouts with a 20-17 mark and a 2.68 ERA.

Fred Clarke of the Pirates just might have to call it quits for the season. The 33-year-old Pittsburgh left fielder received a possible season-ending injury against the Chicago Cubs recently at Exposition Park. Clarke suffered a torn rib cage muscle while making a defensive play. The Pirates medical staff said he could be out quite some time, as much as 2-3 months.

Presently Clarke is batting .267 and has collected 1 home run, 64 RBIs, .355 OBP and scored 62 runs.
