8th Inning Meltdown By Naps Hess Hands Athletics 4-3 Victory
League Park,Cleveland,Oh.-Cleveland Naps-In one of the strangest games I've ever seen,Cleveland Naps port-side twirler Otto Hess after dominating for 7 innings, suddenly lost all command in the 8th and went on to hit 3 batters, walk another, and throw a wild pitch as the Athletics somehow scored three runs in the inning without getting a hit! Then in the bottom of the inning,A's twirler Eddie Plank rifled a pitch high off of the shoulder of Hess setting off a near donneybrook, thankfully though cooler heads prevailed and the inning ended with Philadelphia holding a 4-1 lead.In the bottom of the 9th though,Cleveland struck back getting to within a run on a Nig Clarke 2 run 2 out double, and suddenly, the Naps were poised to steal this game, but it wasn't to be as Philadelphia relief man Weldon Henley got Hess to pop-up ending the game 4-3.Here's the box score.

Seybold Guns Down Tying Run At The Plate To Preserve 5-4 A's Victory
League Park,Cleveland,Oh.-Here in League Park, the fans in attendance got treated to a whale of a ballgame as the Philadelphia Athletics and the Cleveland Naps battled tooth and nail until the last out was registered on Jimmy Dygert's strikeout of Bill Bradley ending the game with the invading A's claiming the 5-4 victory.Entering the 8th inning tied at four, the Athletics got back to back one out singles by Socks Seybold and Harry Davis putting runners on the corners for windpaddist Ossee Schreckengost who hit a dead double play ball that was somehow broken up perfectly by Harry Davis which allowed Seybold to score the go ahead run on the fielder's choice giving the A's the 5-4 lead.In the bottom of the inning,Naps catcher Harry Bemis tripled to lead off the inning and suddenly,Cleveland was 90 feet from tying the game.Following a walk to Cotton Top Turner,CF Harry Bay hit a routine fly ball to right, seemingly deep enough to score the tying run,but Socks would have none of that! He delivered a wicked strike to Schreckengost massacring pinch runner Bill Shipke at the fourth bag!The Naps never threatened again and the Athletics prevailed 5-4.Here's the box score.

Colby Jack Turned To Swiss By Naps
League Park,Cleveland,Oh.-In the final game of this four game set,the Cleveland Naps squared things up with the Athletics thanks to a rousing 7-5 victory in which no pitcher was safe,as both teams took turns knocking the ball all over the yard to the tune of 23 combined hits.In the end though it was Cleveland who plated the most runners thanks to RBI hits by George Stovall and Nig Clarke in the 5th and 8th innings respectively,as for the brutulized boxmen, the Naps Bill Bernhard(6-6) gets the win while Jack Coombs(4-6) suffers the loss. Here's the box score.

Townsend Strikes Out 10 In 5-0 Whitewash Of Athletics
American League Park,Wash.DC-In the final game of this 23 game road trip, the Senators unleashed twirler extroadinaire Happy Townsend(4-5) on the Athletics today, and they never had a chance.Townsend, the Senators' clever right handed artisan, toppled the A's at will and blanked them impressively.Happy distributed 10 strikeouts as he made the ball talk, hum, and cut curious capers, and often hostile battersdidn't know weather they were hitting at a baseball,a pea,or an elusive blue streak. To make matters worse,Townsend wasn't the only Senator with a hot hand,as first sacker Jake Stahl was nearly unstoppable at the plate going 3 for 4 with a triple,2 RBI,a run scored and a stolen base. For the A's, starting pitcher Rube Waddell lost for the second straight time dropping his record to 11-4.Here's the box score.

Offensive Woes Continue As Cy Young Baffles Struggling A's
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Playing in front of the home crowd for the first time in over 3 weeks, the Athletics gave the faithful absolutely nothing to cheer about as Boston twirler Cy Young held the A's to just three hits in the Americans impressive 2-0 victory. For the Athletics, its their third straight loss and the 2nd straight time they've been shut out,but no worries says Socks Seybold: "Hey man,its a long long season, and things like this are a part of it,the main thing is to not let it get you down, just come out tomorrow, play hard, and things will take care of themselves"After hearing things like that, and then seeing the way he's played this season, one can only wonder what could have been if Socks hadn't been injured last season...Here's today's box score.

Friday, June 22nd, 1906: Isbell Hurt, out 1-2 Weeks
Chicago fans will be disappointed to learn that Frank Isbell developed a pinched nerve while colliding with a player at a base in today's game. After the doctor informed the Chicago White Sox manager that Isbell was expected to miss 1-2 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the second baseman could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

This season in 58 games, Isbell has hit at a .298 clip with 73 hits, no home runs, 30 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

Friday, June 22nd, 1906: Detroit Blanks White Sox, Eubank at His Best
John Eubank was sneaky fast, on the mark and hard to hit today. He blanked the Chicago White Sox 7-0 on 5 hits and had no walks and 4 strikeouts.

"You know what he's going to throw. You know what to expect. And you still can't hit it," the Chicago skipper told reporters after the shutout loss to the Detroit Tigers.

"He just had a real deceiving fastball today and he was throwing it for strikes."

In the current season in 7 starts, John Eubank has a record of 5-1 with 14 strikeouts in 71.1 innings and a 1.01 ERA.

"It certainly makes my job easy," said the Brooklyn skipper. "When my pitcher pitches a shutout. I can just sit back, watch and enjoy."

First Inning Explosion Dooms Boston As Athletics Roll To 8-3 Win
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-After being held scoreless for 18 straight innings, the Philadelphia Athletics enterd today's game with a giant chip on their shoulders, and Boston twirler Jesse Tannehill never had a chance as the A's exploded right out of the gate tagging Tannehill for 5 hits and 5 runs in their first time at bat setting the tone for what would be an easy 8-3 Philadelphia victory.Nearly every player who held a bat got in on the action with Bris Lord's 3 RBI leading the way.In the box,A's twirler Chief Bender(14-1) took nothing for granted as he dominated every inning except the 6th where with an 8-0 lead he served up a 3 run home run to Boston suburbanite Buck Freeman, providing the Americans with their only runs of the day. Here's the box score.

                      Phillies Ward Hurt
Monday, June 25th, 1906: Phillies Ward Hurt
Philadelphia fans will be disappointed to learn that Joe Ward developed dead arm syndrome while throwing the ball in today's game. After the doctor informed the Philadelphia Phillies manager that Ward was expected to miss one week, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the second baseman could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

In 1906 Ward is batting .312 with 1 home run.

Monday, June 25th, 1906: Philadelphia Blanks Giants, Duggleby at His Best
Speaking after the game, the Philadelphia manager said, "Bill Duggleby had everything going for him. He changed speeds effectively, stayed down, had a lot of movement... he had it all... masterful."

Duggleby held the New York Giants to 5 hits and fashioned a fine 3-0 shutout. He had 3 walks and 1 strikeout in the game.

"We couldn't get anything going. He certainly had our number," the New York skipper told reporters.

This season Duggleby has worked 134.2 innings with 29 strikeouts en route to a 8-6 record and a 2.14 ERA.

Sudhoff Fires Shutout In Browns Victory
Monday, June 25th, 1906: Sudhoff Fires Shutout in Browns Victory
The White Sox manager was philosophical after his team was shut out by the St. Louis Browns 2-0.

"It was just one of those games, shake it off and do better next time," he said.

Willie Sudhoff blanked them on 4 hits with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.

"I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs. They were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Sudhoff said.

"I set them up pretty good, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one."

To this point in the season, Sudhoff has rung up no saves in 7 relief appearances. He has also crafted a 1.11 ERA, 3 wins and 1 loss and 9 strikeouts in 24.1 innings.

American League Park,Wash,DC.-With a small but vociferous crowd thoroughly against them, the invading Philadelphia Athletics used a 3 run 6th inning to pull away from the feisty Senators 6-4.A's twirler "Gettysburg" Eddie Plank(8-8) showed the courage of a lion as he fought his way through 9 tough innings without his best stuff, forced instead to use the guile and determination of a battle hardened veteran. Here's the box score.

Wednesday, June 27th, 1906: Young Injured, out of Lineup
Boston fans will be disappointed to learn that Cy Young developed a fractured foot while running the bases in today's game. After the doctor informed the Boston Americans manager that Young was expected to miss 3 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the starting pitcher could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

His record this season is 5-8 in 17 starts and Young has a 2.73 ERA.

Bender's RBI Single In 9th Downs Senators 2-1
American League Park,Wash,DC.-When its your year, its your year! Athletics twirler Chief Bender(15-1) is on his way to having the best season of his young career with an amazing 15 wins against only 1 defeat in his 17 starts this season putting him on a pace for over 30 victories,a feat which has never been accomplished by an Athletics pitcher since the league merger in 1901.The last man to do it was Gus Weyhing who had 30 in 1889 for the A's in the old American Association.Ok,back to today's ballgame, and what a game it was as Bender and Senators pitcher "Long" Tom Hughes battled the whole way with the only runs through 8 rounds coming on a Harry Davis RBI single in the first and a Denny Sullivan RBI single in the 4th.In the 9th,the Athletics finally broke the 1-1 tie when Chief Bender himself laced a two out RBI single to left bringing home Ossee Schreckengost with the game winning run. Here's the box score.

"It was just one of those games, when everything went right. I threw a lot of strikes," Johnny Lush said. "And the pitches they did get to hit, they didn't do anything with them."

The Philadelphia Phillies pitcher really got it done in his 1-0 shutout victory over the Brooklyn Superbas, shutting them down on 5 hits. Lush issued 2 walks and had 9 strikeouts.

Over the season Lush has thrown 76 innings and dished out 52 strikeouts with a 5-4 mark and a 3.67 ERA.

American League Park,Wash,DC.-In the final game of this 5 game series, the Washington Senators got wins in the first and last game thanks to the superb twirling of Happy Townsend(5-5) who once again shut down the Athletics leading his team to a 3-1 victory.Townsend needed to be every bit as good as he was because after allowing 3 first inning runs,A's boxman Rube Waddell(11-6) allowed just 3 more hits the rest of the way,but unfortunately for Rube, his teammates could never get those first 3 back. Here's the box score.

Sometimes even Mordecai Brown of Chicago isn't sure which pitcher will show up when he takes the mound.

"I've been good sometimes and bad sometimes," he said. This time he looked good and made the Cincinnati Reds look bad, blanking them by the score of 1-0.

History in the making. That's what the fans at Hilltop Park got to see today, when New York outplayed the Americans 5-4. John Anderson of the Highlanders came to the plate 6 times and came away with a dynamite day as he exploded for 5 hits against Boston.

In the postgame press conference the Boston skipper quipped to reporters, "Hey, we tried to get him out. We threw everything but the kitchen sink against him and he hit it. Maybe we should've thrown the kitchen sink."

                              J. Anderson hit an RBI single in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, singled in the 7th, singled in the 9th and hit a solo-shot off N. Gibson in the 11th.
