Players Of The Week For Week Ending July 1,1906

Monday, July 2nd, 1906: Donlin Picked Best Player
At the age of 28, Mike Donlin might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The New York center fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days collecting the National League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 10 hits in 20 at-bats, no home runs and 4 RBIs last week in 6 games.

In the 1906 season Donlin is hitting .384 with 3 home runs.

Monday, July 2nd, 1906: AL Trophy Goes to Anderson of New York
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask John Anderson, the New York center fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the American League Player of the Week honors.

Anderson piled up 12 hits in 25 at-bats, 1 home run and 2 RBIs while hitting .480.

To date this year Anderson is batting .265 with 1 home run.

Award Winners For The Month Of June 1906

                Rookies Of The Month

Sunday, July 1st, 1906: American League Names Rookie of Month
A boyish Eddie Collins emerged as the latest American League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Philadelphia deserved the honor, batting .360 with no home runs and 4 RBI. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Collins enjoy the limelight.

This season Collins has hit 1 home run and posted a .372 batting average.

Sunday, July 1st, 1906: June's Spotlight Falls on Rookie Star
With a flourish, Boston's Vive Lindaman hoisted up June's National League Rookie of the Month Award. Even though it's his first year in the league, he definitely has reason to be proud.

Last month in 6 starts he posted 5 wins and no losses and collected a 1.73 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 52 innings of work. He issued 17 walks and held the opposition to a .205 average.

Even a vet would be proud of those stats.

Currently Lindaman has a record of 10-3 with 40 strikeouts and 48 walks in 135.2 innings and a 1.99 ERA.

                Batters Of The Month

Sunday, July 1st, 1906: Donlin Top Hitter in NL in June
Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 28-year-old Mike Donlin put together a solid offensive month for New York and was crowned June's top batter in the National League.

He batted .412 with no home runs, 20 RBIs and 8 runs scored.

This season Donlin is batting .384 with 46 RBIs, 39 runs scored and 3 home runs.

Sunday, July 1st, 1906: Stone AL Outstanding Batter of the Month
In the month of June George Stone thumped the ball with authority, earning American League Batter of the Month honors in the process.

St. Louis's left fielder hit .324 with 1 home run, 17 RBIs and scored 13 runs.

Stone is currently hitting at a .353 pace with 2 home runs, 38 RBIs and has scored 37 times.

                Pitchers Of The Month

Sunday, July 1st, 1906: Pelty - AL's Pitcher of the Month
Barney Pelty hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning American League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In June the St. Louis starter earned a 6-2 mark in 8 starts. He threw 70 innings, struck out 32 and compiled a solid 1.03 ERA.

On his 1906 stats sheet Pelty shows a 12-5 record, 18 starts, 153 innings, 63 strikeouts and a 1.65 ERA.

Sunday, July 1st, 1906: Duggleby NL's #1 Pitcher in June
Veteran Bill Duggleby put together quite a successful stretch in June for the Philadelphia Phillies, earning himself the National League Pitcher of the Month award.

Duggleby racked up a 5-2 record in 7 starts, posting a 1.29 ERA over 63 innings and striking out 15.

In 17 starts this season, Duggleby has picked up 9 wins while suffering 6 losses. He has pitched 143.2 innings, allowed 121 hits, struck out 32 and posted a 2.07 ERA.

                  Special Report:
                  Tigers Roar Back To Life!
Detroit,Mi.-Following a miserable spring that saw the Tigers lose Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford(their best two players) for the first two months of the season, the clouds over Bennett Park were ominous to say the least but to their credit, the team rallied together and played pretty well going 21-33 over the first two months of the season, good enough to still be in the running for that elusive AL Flag. Now,a little over two weeks since the return of Detroit's ballpark heroes,Pennant fever is gripping the city! The Tigers have gone an amazing 12-3 since June 16th, giving them a 33-36 record, just 9 and a half games behind front running Philadelphia, whom the Tigers will face off with later next week.Since their return,Cobb has hit at a .292 clip with 4 stolen bases,9 runs scored and 6 RBI,while Crawford, has gone 15 for his first 60 for a .250 average with a home run,11 RBI,9 runs scored and 4 stolen bases.Only time will tell if the Tigers can get close enough to contend, but as always,we'll be watching.

                  The ever dangerous Cobb

Highlanders 8th Inning Explosion Sinks Athletics 6-2
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Athletics port sider Eddie Plank(8-9) solid through seven, totally collapsed in the 8th allowing 5 runs on 5 hits a walk and a hit batsman turning a 2-1 lead into a 6-2 loss at the hands of the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were led by first sacker Hal Chase who had 3 hits including 2 doubles in 5 at bats while also scoring two runs, surprisingly,New York's other big hitter was none other than pitcher Al Orth(6-11) who not only twirled a swell game but had 3 hits and 2 RBI as well, totally embarassing for the likes of Plank. Here's the box score.

Hanifan Smashes 9th Inning Homer To Give Athletics Dramatic 5-4 Victory
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In one of the most thrilling games in Columbia Park history, the Philadelphia Athletics thanks to a two out pinch hit 2 run home run by backup first sacker Jack Hanifan stunned the visiting New York Highlanders 5-4.It was just one of those games that neither team deserved to lose, crisp offense, sparkling defense, and fantastic pitching all leading to some of the best baseball ever seen. The game started out with the A's striking quickly in the bottom of the first thanks to a Socks Seybold RBI ground out making it a 1-0 game. The New Yorkers came right back though scoring single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to take a 2-1 lead.In the 5th,the Highlanders made it 3-1 on a controversial Chief Bender(16-1) balk call that brought home LF Frank Delahanty. In the 6th,the Athletics closed the gap to 3-2 following a Harry Davis RBI double that scored ol' Socks. The Highlanders would again take a two run lead in the 7th following a sacrifice fly by pitcher Jake Powell(9-8).In the 8th,with Topsy Hartsel on 3rd and two outs,Powell uncorked a wild pitch allowing Hartsel to walk home with a run that would loom large in the inning to follow. After putting the Highlanders down in order in the top half of the 9th,the Athletics got a leadoff single by backstop Ossee Schreckengost and then quickly moved him to second on a Bris Lord sacrifice bunt.Following a Monte Cross ground out that moved Ossee over the 3rd,A's twirler Chief Bender who was scheduled to bat was called back by manager Mack for pinch hitter Jack Hanifan who had all of 2 hits in his 13 at bats this season.Powell who may have been trying to get too pretty with his pitches, fell behind Hanifan 2-0 putting him in a perfect fastball situation. The fastball came,Hanifan didn't miss and the fans went bananas as Jack was carried off of the diamond. Here's the box score.

                        Happy Independence Day!!

Athletics Steal Game One 7-6,Then Promptly Get Buried In Afternoon Session 7-2
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Today marks the 130th anniversary of our nations independence from England and what better way could their be to celebrate than to watch a couple of ballgames between the New York Highlanders and the hometown Philadelphia Athletics, two teams who are quickly becoming bitter rivals who despise nothing more than to watch the other team celebrate a victory. In game one,the Highlanders held a 6-4 9th inning lead with two outs and nobody on base when disaster of the highest order struck NY twirler Ambrose Puttnam. It started out simple enough with Eddie Collins hitting an opposite field line drive single to left giving the A's a two out baserunner, but "Putty then dug himself a deep hole by walking Hartsel and Seybold which loaded the bases for red hot Harry Davis who instantly smelled fear and took full advantage lacing a two run game tying double to the gap in right center that sent the fans into a wild tizzy as Puttnam was removed from the game in favor of wiley old Clark Griffith who would try to extend the game by getting the third out from the bat of Rube Oldring. With the count 1-0 and the entire ballpark on its feet,Oldring smacked a base hit just under the outstretched glove of SS Wid Conroy giving the Athletics the 7-6 victory. In game two,Highlander spitballer Jack Chesbro totally befuddled the aggressive Athletics batsman with his slippery saliva covered pitches handily defeating them 7-2.More disturbing than the loss though was the play of A's twirler Rube Waddell(11-7) who lasted just two rounds while giving up 5 hits and 5 runs(4 earned) as he was saddled with his 5th straight defeat. Here's the day'sbox scores.

Wednesday, July 4th, 1906: St. Louis SP Will Miss 1-2 Weeks
St. Louis fans will be disappointed to learn that Barney Pelty developed a tender shoulder while throwing a pitch in today's game. After the doctor informed the St. Louis Browns manager that Pelty was expected to miss 1-2 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the starting pitcher could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

In 19 starts this year Pelty has fashioned a 12-5 record and a 1.64 ERA.

Senators Steal 9 Bases In 6-2 Victory Over Sagging Athletics
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Today was not Ossee Schreckengost's best day,the Washington Senators totally embarassed Ossee, stealing 9 bases in 11 attempts including one of home where Schreckengost was flattened by Otis Clymer and subsequently dropped the ball handing the Senators their sixth and final run of the game.A's twirler Eddie Plank(8-10) didn't fare much better allowing 8 hits and 6 runs(2 earned) in 6 and two thirds innings as he was defeated for the 10th time this season, the first Athletics pitcher to earn that dubious honor. As for Senators pitcher Cy Falkenberg(6-9),he was fantastic the whole way through allowing just 7 hits and 2 runs(1 earned) in the complete game 6-2 victory while SS Dave Altizer and LF Clymer paced the offense with 2 hits,2 runs, and 2 stolen bases each. Here's the box score.
