    Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9

    Thursday July 19,1906

    By George,Athletics Turned To Stone
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Cast as the goat after grounding into a double play to end the game yesterday,St.Louis superstar LF George Stone made up for it today with a 2 run 9th inning triple that broke a 3-3 tie and paved the way for a 6-3 Browns victory.St.Louis twirler Fred Glade(8-7) pitched a marvelous game going 9 strong innings and allowing 7 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 2.As for Philadelphia,it was just a matter of Eddie Plank(9-11) once again not able to get it done late as he fell for the 11th time this season. Here's the box score.

    Boston Right Fielder Hurt
Thursday, July 19th, 1906: Boston Right Fielder Hurt
Buck Freeman at first refused to leave today's Detroit-Boston game after he suffered a strained rib cage muscle while colliding with a player at a base. But his manager convinced him not to be foolish. "I want to be on the field," the feisty Boston right fielder said. "I'll play through just about anything." Given time to reflect on the situation, he knew it was in his best interest to get immediate treatment. The injury is expected to keep Freeman out of action for 3 weeks.

This season Freeman is batting .250 with 25 RBIs, 24 runs scored and 4 home runs.

Bender Cruises To 20th Win In Style

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In achieving his first milestone of the season,Chief Bender(20-1) was nothing short of brilliant as he held the Browns to a mere three hits and one unearned run in the Athletics 10-1 thrashing of the invaders from St.Louis.Second sacker Eddie Collins awoke from his mid season slumber to contribute three singles,an RBI and 3 runs scored in four trips to the plate giving the A's some much needed support from the leadoff spot which had been missing during Eddie's recent struggles. Here's the box score.

Powell Twirls Highlanders To Shutout Victory
Friday, July 20th, 1906: Powell Twirls Highlanders to Shutout Victory
Jack Powell of New York easily handled the Cleveland Naps, stopping them on 6 hits and chucking a complete-game 4-0 shutout.

"He really did a job on us," said the Cleveland manager. "He had good command of his pitches. He changed speeds well and pretty much confused us. We never could zero in on him, but he certainly zeroed in on us."

Powell said, "Everything was working for me. Throwing my breaking stuff over the plate was big."

He finished the game with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks in a solid outing.

In 22 starts this season Powell has rung up a 12-9 record and a 2.83 ERA.

        Patten Zeroes In On Philadelphia
Saturday, July 21st, 1906: Patten Zeroes in on Philadelphia
Case Patten of the Cincinnati Reds was on top of his game today. He tantalized the Philadelphia Phillies with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 2-0 shutout.

In the postgame comments, the Philadelphia skipper said, "He had the changeup working. You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Cincinnati hurler had 2 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.

Patten told reporters after the game, "To be successful in this league, you have to keep the ball down. If you don't, they'll make you pay."

So far this season Patten has compiled a 9-12 record with a 2.53 ERA.

Players Of The Week For Week Ending July 22,1906

Monday, July 23rd, 1906: Week's Premier Player: New York's Donlin
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Mike Donlin, the New York center fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the National League Player of the Week honors.

Donlin piled up 11 hits in 24 at-bats, no home runs and 6 RBIs while hitting .458.

Donlin is batting .388 this year with 4 home runs, 58 RBIs and 53 runs scored. He has 133 hits in 343 at-bats.

Monday, July 23rd, 1906: Boston First Baseman Picked AL Player of the Week
At the age of 30, Myron Grimshaw might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Boston first baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days collecting the American League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 10 hits in 18 at-bats, 1 home run and 9 RBIs last week in 5 games.

In 66 games this season Grimshaw has compiled a .328 batting average with 79 hits and 2 home runs. He has also scored 31 times and knocked in 32 runs.

Collins At His Best In 5-4 Athletics Victory
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In an amazing show of hitting and speed,Athletics colt Eddie Collins terrorizied the Chicago White Sox today going 2 for 4 with a walk,2 runs scored, and 3 stolen bases in the Athletics exhilarating 5-4 victory.Tied at 4 in the bottom of the 9th,Collins lead off the inning with a walk, before quickly stealing second base which forced the Sox to walk Topsy Hartsel giving the A's first and second, then following a Socks Seybold sacrifice bunt and another intentional walk, the bases were loaded with one out for Rube Oldring who smoked a ground ball to shortstop Lee Tannehill who elected to home with the ball, but once again, the speed of Collins was too much as catcher Billy Sullivan dropped the ball with Collins sliding into him giving the A's the 5-4 victory. With the win,the Athletics have now taken a 9 and a half game lead over the struggling White Sox who look nothing like the champions of a year ago. Here's the box score.

                  New Yorks Blanks Pirates,Ames Wins
Wednesday, July 25th, 1906: New York Blanks Pirates, Ames Wins
In an impressive outing, Red Ames whitewashed the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0.

"I'm getting a lot more downward movement instead of side to side. That side-to-side stuff can get hit a long way," said Ames, who is throwing with more of an overhand motion.

Athletics Tame Tigers By 3-1 Despite Being Outhit 12-4

Bennett Park,Detroit,Mi.-As they say, sometimes its better to be lucky than to be good, and nowhere was that more true than here at Bennett Park where despite being outhit 12-4,the Philadelphia Athletics still found a way to beat the Tigers 3-1.Jack Coombs(5-7),the Athletics promising young pitcher was tremendous all day, constantly finding his way out of tight spots, while keeping his team's hopes alive in the process. Finally,in the 8th with the game still scoreless, the Athletics finally got it going when Coombs himself roped a one out double to left that was followed by a Monte Cross walk and then a Topsy Hartsel RBI single making it a 1-0 game. The A's would make it 2-0 on a Rube Oldring ground out before ending the inning on Socks Seybold's fly out to deep center. The Tigers came right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a Charlie Hickman RBI single making it a 2-1 game. The Athletics would go on to add a run in the 9th for a final score of 3-1.Here's the box score.

Schreckengost's Throwing Error In 7th Gives Tigers Much Needed 5-4 Victory
Bennett Park,Detroit,Mi.-Led by the powerful bat of RF Sam Crawford, the Detroit Tigers took down the mighty Philadelphia Athletics 5-4.Tied at 4 in the bottom of the 7th,the Tigers got the break they would need to win when Philadelphia windpaddist Ossee Schreckengost threw the ball over the head of third baseman Rube Oldring and into left field on a steal attempt by Germany Schaefer which allowed Schaefer to come home with the eventual game winning run.Tiger twirler Frank Kitson(5-9) went the distance for the win while the A's Rube Waddell(14-8) took the loss. Here's the box score.

                      Americans Young Suffers Injury
Saturday, July 28th, 1906: Americans Young Suffers Injury
Boston fans will be disappointed to learn that Cy Young developed a strained bicep tendon while throwing a pitch in today's game. After the doctor informed the Boston Americans manager that Young was expected to miss 2-3 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the starting pitcher could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

This season Young has registered 7 wins and 9 losses in 21 starts with a 2.73 ERA.

Grimshaw Slams 5 AHits For Boston
Saturday, July 28th, 1906: Grimshaw Slams 5 Hits for Boston
It doesn't happen very often, but it happened for Myron Grimshaw -- a 5-hit day. He went on a rampage at Huntington Avenue Grounds and paced the Americans to a 13-5 win over the St. Louis Browns.

After his dynamite batting performance the Boston first baseman told the press, "I just tried to get myself in a good count and have a good at-bat. That's all I can control." His philosophy paid some great dividends today. He slammed 5 hits in 5 tries and put his name in the record book.

                      M. Grimshaw singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 6th, hit a two-run double in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off E. Smith in the 8th.

A look at his 1906 stats shows Grimshaw with a .327 average, 3 home runs, 37 RBIs and 36 runs scored. He has played in 72 games.

It has been in the rumor mill for several weeks, but today team officials for Brooklyn and St. Louis confirmed an agreement. The Superbas dealt 25-year old center fielder Doc Gessler to the Browns for 27-year old closer Cy Morgan.

Thus far this year Gessler has hit .247 with no home runs and 20 RBIs.

Sunday, July 29th, 1906: Injury Sidelines Tom Hughes for Season
The season is apparently over for Tom Hughes. The Washington Senators medical staff informed the club that the starting pitcher will be out at least 13 months with a ruptured medial collateral ligament. Hughes was hurt in the game against Chicago while running the bases. The doctors did not think he would recover prior to the end of the season.

Currently Hughes has a 7-12 won-lost record in 24 starts with a 3.89 ERA. He also has 88 strikeouts in 176 innings.

Monday, July 30th, 1906: NL Trophy Goes to Schulte of Chicago
Frank Schulte has the tools to stick in this league for many years. The 23-year-old right fielder of the Chicago Cubs had a pretty fair bat in the National League over the past seven days and won the Player of the Week honors.

Schulte batted .560 with 14 hits in 25 at-bats, no home runs and 3 RBIs.

So far this year Schulte is batting .294 with 5 home runs, 52 RBIs and 57 runs scored.

Monday, July 30th, 1906: Big Bat Bags AL Best Player Award
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Billy Maloney, the St. Louis center fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the American League Player of the Week honors.

Maloney piled up 9 hits in 17 at-bats, 1 home run and 2 RBIs while hitting .529.

Maloney on the season is batting .225 with 2 home runs. His totals include 31 RBIs and 33 runs scored. He has played in 87 games.

                              Mathewson To Miss 7 Weeks
Tuesday, July 31st, 1906: Mathewson to Miss 7 Weeks
New York fans will be disappointed to learn that Christy Mathewson developed a damaged meniscus while throwing a pitch in today's game. After the doctor informed the New York Giants manager that Mathewson was expected to miss 7 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the starting pitcher could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

Thus far this season Mathewson has posted a 13-9 record, started 25 games, struck out 124 batters in 203 innings and compiled a 2.04 ERA.
