      Wilhelm Shines In Gem
Monday, July 9th, 1906: Wilhelm Shines in Gem
The Detroit manager told reporters after the game, "When he started out, his command wasn't that good, but he's a tough guy. The more pitches he throws, the better his command is."

He was talking about Kaiser Wilhelm, who had just hurled a fine 5-hit shutout over the Washington Senators. He had 2 strikeouts and no walks in the Detroit 2-0 victory.

"An outstanding job," the Washington manager said. "We couldn't get anything going. Every time we got a hit, he got out of the jam. He pitched a terrific game."

This year Wilhelm has a 9-9 record and a 2.76 ERA.

Despite Huge Game By Seybold,Athletics Fall To Naps 9-7
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-With a 6-1 lead heading into the 8th inning and twirler Eddie Plank seemingly on top of his game, today's game looked like a sure victory for the Athletics, but Cleveland Naps' CF Joe Birmingham's two out 3 run homer in the top of the 8th set his team ablaze as they went on to score four 9th inning runs to steal the game from the Athletics 9-7,wasting the unbelievable performance by Socks Seybold who went an amazing 5 for 5 with a double,3 triples,a home run,3 RBI and 4 runs scored in what was undoubtably the most impressive offensive outburst in the Majors this season. Here's the box score.

Seybold Goes On Rampage Against Naps
Tuesday, July 10th, 1906: Seybold Goes on Rampage Against Naps
Somedays you can't win for losing. Just ask Socks Seybold. He was the King of Swing in the game against the Naps, but his Athletics were beaten 9-7 anyway.

The Philadelphia right fielder stepped into the batter's box 5 times against the Cleveland and delivered 5 hits.

It was a sensational game for him. He excitedly told the press, "Unbelieveable feeling. It felt great on the one hand, but a downer at the same time. 5-for-5! It does wonders for your batting average. But it's a shame we couldn't win it, too."

        S. Seybold tripled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, hit a two-run triple in the 4th, tripled in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off E. Moore in the 9th.

Seybold is batting .305 this season in 76 games with 7 home runs, 46 RBIs and 40 runs scored. He has 93 hits in 305 at-bats.

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-With the game tied at four after two innings,it looked as though these two teams would pound each other all day,but it wasn't to be as the A's Chief Bender(18-1) settled in and kept the Naps scoreless the rest of the way while his teammates continued to hit Addie Joss(9-9) hard scoring once in the fourth and twice in the fifth giving the Athletics the 7-4 victory.Speaking of Joss,he is now 0 for 3 in 3 starts against the Athletics, with a 6.52 ERA in just 19.1 innings pitched,by far his worst stats against any team this season. Here's the box score.

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In one of the worst performances of the season, the Philadelphia Athletics couldn't do anything with the crafty Bill Donovan(8-10) who held the A's to just 4 hits in Detroit's convincing 6-0 victory.Everything was not all roses for the boys from Detroit though, after returning to the lineup less than a month ago,Tigers prospect Ty Cobb was once again bitten by the injury bug and could be out as much as a month with an injured hip. Here's the box score.

Thursday, July 12th, 1906: Rickey Slams 5 Hits for St. Louis
Players get multi-hit games all the time. But a 5-hit game only comes around once in a blue moon. It happened at Sportsman's Park III when Branch Rickey of St. Louis scattered 5 hits all over the ballpark against the Boston Americans.

He walloped 5 hits in 6 at-bats in his career-day performance to help the Browns get by the Americans 22-9.

In a talkative and jovial mood after the game, the catcher of the Browns exclaimed, "Whoa, my swing was really, really there today. I made some good, sweet-spot contact and when that happens... good things happen... like 5-6. I could get used to a lot of days like this one."

              B. Rickey singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, hit an RBI double in the 4th, hit a two-run single in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and flied out in the 8th.

It was a sensational game for him. He told the press, "Unbelievable feeling. It felt good. 5 for 6! It does wonders for your batting average, too."

The Cleveland center fielder said to reporters in the postgame interview, "It makes it easier if you get a good pitch. The odds are in your favor then, not the pitcher's. I got a bunch of very pretty pitches to hit today and I didn't miss any of them."

                J. Birmingham singled in the 2nd, doubled in the 3rd, hit an RBI triple in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 8th and grounded out in the 9th.

In 1906 Birmingham has put up a .339 batting average with 57 hits, 2 home runs and 21 RBIs.

Yeah,in deadball era games, that was actually quite common.Actually, the 1906 Cubs were the first team to ever have under 200 errors in a season.

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-The Athletics came into today's game with all intentions of taking advantage of a team without its biggest star and they did just that as port sider Eddie Plank(9-10) scattered 10 hits while whitewashing the Tigers 8-0 for his 9th win of the season.SS Monte Cross paced the offense going 2 for 3 with a double,3 RBI and 2 runs scored while Detroit second sacker Germany Schaefer paced the losers with 3 hits. Here's the box score.

Monday, July 16th, 1906: American League Announces #1 Player
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask George Stone, the St. Louis left fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the American League Player of the Week honors.

Stone piled up 13 hits in 23 at-bats, no home runs and 8 RBIs while hitting .565.

So far this year Stone is hitting .366 with 2 home runs.

Monday, July 16th, 1906: Star of the Week Honored in NL
At the age of 27, Harry Arndt might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Philadelphia third baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days collecting the National League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 15 hits in 26 at-bats, no home runs and 3 RBIs last week in 6 games.

So far this season Arndt is batting .307 with 1 home run.

Monday, July 16th, 1906: Huggins Gone for Season in Cincinnati
The season is apparently over for Miller Huggins. The Cincinnati Reds medical staff informed the club that the second baseman will be out at least 8 months with a fractured hip. Huggins was hurt in the game against Brooklyn while colliding with a player at a base. The doctors did not think he would recover prior to the end of the season.

Huggins is currently hitting at a .267 pace with no home runs, 11 RBIs and has scored 38 times.

The St. Louis manager told reporters, "He will miss up to 4 weeks with a fractured hand." The Browns are expected to announce a roster move in the next day or two.

                                Colby Jack Saves The Day!

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Entering today's game with the rotten taste of defeat fresh on their tongues, the Philadelphia Athletics played 8 fantastic innings building up a 4-0 lead in the process, but like most things in life, victory did not come easy. The final inning started innocently enough with Rube Waddell(14-7) striking out Browns second sacker Harry Niles, but following a walk to CF Billy Maloney, the Brownies went on the attack, getting 4 straight singles closing the gap to 4-3 with runners on first and second with still only one out.Meanwhile,Jack Coombs was feverishly warming up preparing to come into the game when Waddell walked another batter loading the bases for reigning batter of the year George Stone.Coombs, finally ready, entered the game to face Stone in a showdown to decide the game. With the count 1-0,Coombs unleashed a fastball that Stone blistered to the first base side of second where miraculously second sacker Eddie Collins scooped up the ball forced the runner at second then spun and threw to first for the game ending double play that sent Columbia Park into a frenzy as fans stormed the ballfield in celebration!!! Here's the box score.
