Players Of The Week For Week Ending August 6,1905

Monday, August 7th, 1905: Donlin Chosen #1 Player
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Mike Donlin, the New York center fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the National League Player of the Week honors.

Donlin piled up 10 hits in 27 at-bats, 1 home run and 6 RBIs while hitting .370.

So far this season Donlin is batting .359 with 8 home runs.

Monday, August 7th, 1905: AL Player of the Week Named
Rube Waddell has been around Major League Baseball long enough to know that you don't win Player of the Week awards by being lucky. The Philadelphia Athletics hurler used his well-honed skill to put up superlative numbers last week against American League hitters to take home the prize.

Waddell won 2 while striking out 11 in 18.1 innings. He also logged an ERA of 0.00 and held opposing hitters to a .150 average.

This year Waddell has compiled a 14-10 record with a 2.09 ERA.

Hoffman And Davis Star In 9-1 Victory Over Tigers
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.Dealing with a team wide slump for most of the season, the Athletics were able to stay in contention because of their pitching, which has been nothing short of phenomenal.Suddenly though, the A's have been ripping the cover off of the ball, and nobody has been hotter over the last 10 games than Danny Hoffman(17 for 43) and Harry Davis(14 for 41) who despite struggling for much of the year, have raised their averages to .288 and .251 respectively. In today's game,Hoffman and Davis did it again with both players getting key hits in a 7 run fifth inning that all but guaranteed victory. On the hill, the A's got another great performance by Andy Coakley who bounced back nicely from his last start to go 9 strong innings in which he allowed 6 hits and 1 earned run to go with 5 strikeouts. Here's the box score.

News Notes And Scores From The Rest Of Today's Games

Monday, August 7th, 1905: Elberfeld Hurt, out 3-4 Weeks
New York fans will be disappointed to learn that Kid Elberfeld developed a strained hamstring muscle while running the bases in today's game. After the doctor informed the New York Highlanders manager that Elberfeld was expected to miss 3-4 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the shortstop could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

In the 1905 campaign Elberfeld has hit at a .340 clip with 8 RBIs, no home runs and 9 runs scored.

Monday, August 7th, 1905: Naps Donahue Tosses Masterpiece
Relying on pinpoint control and a good array of pitches, Red Donahue of the Cleveland Naps held the Boston Americans scoreless today. He scattered 3 hits over 9 innings and fanned 3 on his way to the 3-0 victory.

This year Donahue has a 8-3 mark in 10 starts with a 2.45 ERA. He has given up 76 hits in 80.2 innings, struck out 29 and issued 18 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .248 batting average against him.

          A's Collect 18 Hits In 13 Inning 6-5 Victory
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In a thrilling back and forth affair, the Philadelphia Athletics took advantage of a Hi West throwing error in the bottom of the 13th to just make it past the Cleveland Naps 6-5.Early on,the A's were cruising along with a 3-0 lead until in the 7th,where Cleveland got to Chief Bender for 3 runs of their own to tie the game up at three a piece. The Athletics came right back in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead at 4-3 on a Topsy Hartsel RBI double. In the 8th,the Naps once again got to Bender getting three straight hits and tying the game again before Weldon Henley entered the game and quashed the rally with the game still tied.Over the next couple of innings, the A's threatend but couldn't score the game winner as Henley did a good job of neutralizing the Cleveland attack. In the 11th though, the Naps finally got to Henley scoring a run on an Addie Joss sac fly that scored Jim Jackson making it 5-4.The A's would not be denied however, scoring a run of their own on a two out RBI single by Bris Lord once again tying the game.In the 13th,following a Lave Cross leadoff double and a Danny Murphy intentional walk,Bris Lord hit a comebacker back to mound where pitcher Hi West after a fine fielding play, threw the ball away allowing Cross to score and ending the game with the A's on top 6-5.Here's the box score.

The Athletics don't seem to be gaining any ground on the pale hose. You might have to hope for a complete collapse by the Chicago Southsiders in order to catch them.

Flick's Arm Saves The Day As The Naps Hold On To Win 6-5

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In another back and forth thriller, the Cleveland Naps were just good enough to hold off the Athletics today, winning by the score of 6-5.Early on,the Naps were all over A's starter Rube Waddell building a 4-2 lead after 4 thanks to timely hitting by Harry Bemis who knocked in two of the four Cleveland runs.In the 5th,the A's struck back hard taking a 5-4 lead thanks to catcher Tom Needham's titanic 3 run home run that cleared the outfield bleachers and landed out on 29th street to the delight of the home fans.In the 8th,it was the Naps' turn as Bill Bradley and Harry Bemis hit back to back one out singles chasing Waddell and giving Cleveland runners on first and second for pinch hitter Nig Clarke who smoked a double to left center off of reliever Weldon Henley giving the Naps the 6-5 lead.In the bottom of the 8th,with runners on the corners and no outs,Danny Murphy hit a routine fly ball to right that seemed plenty deep enough to score Monte Cross from third, but the Naps Elmer Flick had other ideas as he launched a rocket to the plate nailing Cross at the plate for the rally killing double play.Naps starter Earl "Crossfire" Moore showed his appreciation for Flick's heroics by retiring the A's final four batters of the game without incident preserving game for his deserving mates. Here's the box score.

                  Plank Mows Down Cleveland 3-0
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Following two straight slugfests, the pitchers finally had their day today as the A's and Naps played a hotly contested low scoring ballgame that saw the Athletics come out on top 3-0.Philadelphia starter Eddie Plank was just plain dominant, going 9 strong innings while allowing 5 hits and 0 runs with 9 big strikeouts. His counterpart, the Naps "Strawberry Bill" Bernhard, also pitched well scattering 10 hits for 3 runs(2 earned) in 8 innings pitched.Following three scoreless innings to start the game, the Athletics finally got on the board in the fourth thanks to a Danny Murphy RBI double that made the score 1-0.The A's made it 2-0 in the 7th on a Danny Hoffman RBI double that extended his hitting streak to 16 games while upping his average to a team leading .291.In the 8th,Philadelphia plated the final run of the game on a Bris Lord RBI ground out that brought home Monte Cross who scored for the second time today. With the 3-0 victory, the Athletics now take a three game lead over Cleveland in the battle for second place in the American League. Here's the box score.

News Notes And Scores From The Rest Of Today's Games

Thursday, August 10th, 1905: Smith Shuts out New York
25-year-old White Sox pitcher Frank Smith had a strong outing against the New York Highlanders at South Side Park II, keeping them off the scoreboard the whole game. He struck out 3 in the 8-0 win and walked 1 while surrendering 1 hit.

This year Smith has compiled a 17-2 record with a 1.86 ERA in 21 starts.

Thursday, August 10th, 1905: Flaherty Stops Boston Cold
Everything clicked on the hill today for Patsy Flaherty of the Pittsburgh Pirates as he hurled his club to a 5-0 shutout win over the Boston Beaneaters, limiting them to 4 hits while recording 3 strikeouts and yielding 3 walks. He overpowered some batters with his fastball and buckled knees with his sharp breaking pitches.

"We had our shot at him a couple of different times," the Beaneaters manager said, "but we weren't able to get to him."

This season Flaherty has compiled a 16-8 mark with a 2.02 ERA.

Thursday, August 10th, 1905: Batch Belts Bunch of Base Hits
It was a good day for the Superbas at Washington Park III as they clipped the St. Louis Cardinals 12-2. It was tremendous day for Emil Batch, who went on quite a hitting spree with a 5 for 5 barrage.

The Brooklyn third baseman told reporters after his big 5-hit performance, "I don't have any buzz words. I'm not 'dialed in' or 'in a zone,' as they say. As far as the hitting goes, I try to keep it simple. I try not to look into it too much. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then try to hit it. Today I picked up the spin very well."

                  E. Batch singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off B. Campbell in the 8th.

This season Batch is batting .234 with 1 home run. He has scored 32 runs and driven in 24.

Davis Goes From Goat To Hero With Walk Off Homer In 9th!
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Despite a poor outing by Chief Bender, the A's walked away with a win thanks to Harry Davis' game winning 2 run homer in the bottom of the 9th that turned a 7-7 game into a 9-7 Philadelphia victory. After taking a 4-1 lead after two innings,it looked as though the Browns were in for a long day but they had other plans, hitting Chief Bender at will as they racked up 13 hits and 7 runs off of a totally frustrated Bender. As bad as he pitched though,Bender left the game in the top of the 9th with a man on first and a 7-6 lead that was wiped out when with a runner on third and two outs,Harry Davis dropped the throw from Monte Cross that would have been the game ending out, instead we headed into the bottom of the 9th tied at 7.In their turn at bat,the Athletics ended it quickly when following Tom Needham reaching first on an error,Harry Davis came to the plate and sent an 0-1 change of pace into the cobblestones of 29th street. Here's the box score.

Pennant Races Beginning To Heat Up
With less than 50 games remaining in the season, things are starting to tighten up in both leagues as the race to the top of the heap has ratcheted up exponentionally. In the American League, the Chicago White Sox who have led the standings for most of the season, still find themselves comfortably in front, but the hard charging Boston Americans have quickly joined the list of contenders by winning 9 of their last 11 games moving themselves to within 8 games of the Sox, and a game and a half of second place Philadelphia.Cleveland is also still alive,at eight and a half back.As for Boston, they're in the midst of a critical four game series with Chicago in which they won the first game 3-2 behind the stellar pitching of Jesse Tannenhill.Over in the National League, things could not be any closer with the Giants,Cubs and Pirates all within two games of each other. Can NY manager John McGraw pull a rabbit out of his hat and guide NY to a pennant? Or will the Tinker-To Evers-To Chance Cubs or the Honus Wagner lead Pirates take the crown, stay tuned.....

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-As the season winds down, each game begins to take on a little more meaning,so when the Athletics took the field today,it was no surprise to see them at their best as they took down the St.Louis Browns 3-1.The A's Danny Hoffman got things started quickly with a triple to lead off the bottom of the first inning giving Philadelphia a golden opportunity to score the first run of the game which they did when Harry Davis singled home Hoffman making it 1-0 Athletics. After the Browns tied it in the 2nd,the A's took the lead for good in the third scoring two unearned runs on a throwing error and a sacrific fly making it 3-1 after three innings of play. From then on,it was the Rube Waddell show as he shut the Browns down the rest of the way for his 15th win of the season. With the win,the A's move a little closer to Chicago, who fell again to streaking Boston 2-1 in 12 innings. Here's the box score.

Wednesday, August 16th, 1905: Hits Galore: Stahl Drills 5 Hits
History in the making. That's what the fans at Huntington Avenue Grounds got to see today, when Boston outplayed the White Sox 8-3. Chick Stahl of the Americans came to the plate 5 times and came away with a dynamite day as he exploded for 5 hits against Chicago.

In the postgame press conference the Chicago skipper quipped to reporters, "Hey, we tried to get him out. We threw everything but the kitchen sink against him and he hit it. Maybe we should've thrown the kitchen sink."

                                C. Stahl singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off E. Walsh in the 8th.

                                Wednesday, August 16th, 1905: Detroit's Drill out 4 Weeks
Detroit fans will be disappointed to learn that Lew Drill developed a strained rib cage muscle while colliding with a player at a base in today's game. After the doctor informed the Detroit Tigers manager that Drill was expected to miss 4 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the catcher could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

Thus far in 1905 Drill is batting .228 with 1 home run, 22 RBIs and 44 runs scored
