    Oakland A's WSB 2K3 Franchise

Well here it is - a chance to run my Oakland A's franchise

I started one today and the first thing I did was re-signed Miguel Tejada to a 4 year 28 Budget Pt. Extension to lock him up (something the real life A's couldn't do).

Then I made a big trade:

I traded Scott Hatteburg, Mitch Meluskey, and Ben Bishop for Josh Phelps of the Blue Jays. It may look like a dumb trade, but Phelps has potential and my catching position was pitiful and really, the only player that I gave up that would have played consistently is Hatteberg, so giving them up wasn't a hard deal to make.

I then signed some free agents including Chuck Knoblauch to shore up my left field position, Travis Lee to replace Hatteberg, and Jay Bell to bolster my 2B position as well as add some veteran help. Then I re-signed Josh Phelps to a 3 year 11 BP contract. My payroll is now at 286 BP and I think I'll stand pat for now and see how my team does in the season.

So my opening day lineup looks like this:

    C - Josh Phelps
    1B - Travis Lee
    2B - Mark Ellis
    SS - Miguel Tejada
    3B - Eric Chavez
    LF - Terrence Long
    CF - Chris Singleton
    RF - Jermaine Dye
    DH - Erubiel Durazo

    Pitching:

    SP - Barry Zito
    SP - Mark Mulder
    SP - Tim Hudson
    SP - Ted Lilly
    SP - Aaron Harang
    LR - John Halama
    MR - Jim Mecir
    MR - Jeremy Fikac
    SU - Ricardo Rincon
    SU - Chad Bradford
    CL - Keith Foulke

I will see what happens with this line-up before making any other moves...I'll be back with some updates later tonight

                    Games 2 and 3

Thanks mnert - I am a Jays fan too as well and I like Phelps so it will be interesting to see how he does.

                    Game 2: Seattle @ Oakland

                    Seattle - 5
                    Oakland - 7

                    WP - Mulder (1-0)
                    LP - Pineiro (0-1)
                    S - Foulke (2)
                    HR - Boone (1), Phelps (1), Chavez (1)

This game ended up being closer than expected. The A's jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and chased Pineiro out of the game. However, in the 6th inning, Seattle began chipping away at the lead and in the 7th, had narrowed the score to 6-4. Eric Chavez blasted a solo shot in the 8th to add some insurance while Foulke came in and saved the game despite giving up a solo home run to Bret Boone. Tejada, who drove in 3 runs, was the player of the game, taking the A's to 2-0 on the year

                        Game 3 (04/01): Seattle @ Oakland

                        Seattle - 4
                        Oakland - 6

                        WP - Bradford (1-0)
                        LP - Nelson (0-1)
                        S - Foulke (3)
                        HR - Tejada (1), Dye (1)

Oakland and Seattle were pretty much in a dead heat the entire game staying tied at 1 until the bottom of the 6th when Jermaine Dye hit a 2 run shot to give the A's a 3-1 lead. However, the M's came back in the 7th getting back to back base hits by Ichiro and Cirillo before Boone hit a double to tie the game up chasing Hudson from the game. In the top of the 8th, Dan Wilson had a RBI single to give the Mariners a 4-3 lead only to have Miguel Tejada hit a 3 run home run in the bottom of the inning to give the A's a lead that they would not relinquish. Foulke had a 1-2-3 9th to earn his 3rd save of the season. The A's are now 3-0 and looking for a sweep next game Tejada again took Player of the game honors and the A's are off to a good start.

ESPN news reports that Carlos Guillen has been placed on the 60 day DL with a torn hamstring (ouch)
