              Battle of the Bay Part 1

              Game 72: San Francisco at Oakland

              SF - 0
              Oakland - 7

              WP - Zito (11-1)
              LP - Jensen (5-6)
              HR - Phelps (24), Chavez (28), Wells (17), Dye (15), Bell (7)

              The A's wallop the Giants in game 1 of the series thanks to back to back to back to back homers by Chavez, Wells, Dye, and Phelps in the 4th on Ryan Jensen to get the win. Barry Zito pitched a complete game shut-out striking out 6 and walking 2 while giving up only 5 hits to get his 11th win of the season. Eric Chavez was named ESPN Player of the Game for his performance.

              Game 73 - San Francisco at Oakland

              SF - 8
              Oakland - 2

              WP - Zerbe (4-0)
              LP - Halama (3-2)
              HR - Grissom (4), Tejada (21)

              The Giants bounced back with a blow-out win of their own crushing the A's 8-2. The game was tied at 2 until the top of the 8th when JT Snow hit a 2 run double off of John Halama who was in relief of Tim Hudson. Halama ended up giving up 6 runs that inning allowing the Giants to win. Snow was named ESPN Player of the Game going 3 for 5 with a double and 3 RBI's.

              Game 74 - San Francisco at Oakland

              Oakland - 5

              WP - Mecir (2-1)
              LP - Nen (0-4)
              HR - Bonds (25), Phelps (25), Wells (18)

              The A's win the rubber match with a come from behind victory as Josh Phelps hits a 2 out 2 run homer off of Rob Nen to take 2 of 3 from the Giants. The A's were down 4-3 after Mark Mulder was roughed up for 4 earned runs over 7 innings and after Jermaine Dye singled to get on, Phelps crushed a 2-0 pitch to the right side of The Coliseum. Phelps was named ESPN Player of the Game for his heroics and the A's are now 51-23 with a 9.5 game lead on second place Seattle. Next up - the A's travel to Texas to take on the last place Rangers...

                      The A's clobbered the Rangers in the opener of a four game series thanks to Vernon Wells who went 4 for 5 at the plate with a homer, 2 doubles and 7 RBI's. Wells was a hit away from the cycle and was named ESPN Player of the Game for an amazing performance. The A's were also boosted by a strong outing by Kerry Wood as he pitched a complete game shut-out striking out 15 and walking 3 while giving up 4 hits for his 4th win as an A and 7th overall.

                      The A's squeak by the Rangers in game 2 despite a poor outing by Ted Lilly. Lilly was ineffective giving up 2 home runs to Gary Sheffield and 6 earned runs in 6 innings pitched. However, the A's power was too much for the Rangers to handle led by Player of the Game Jermaine Dye who homered and drove in 3 runs.

                      The A's win 3-0 thanks to a strong effort by Barry Zito as he collected his 12th win of the season to tie Derek Lowe for the league lead in wins. Zito pitched 7 strong innings striking out 5 and walking 1 while only giving up 4 hits. Eric Chavez hit his 30th homer of the season while alsod riving in 2 runs to lead the A's offensively. Frankie Rodriguez collected his 13th save of the season pitching a 1-2-3 9th.

                      LP - Thomson (3-8)
                      S - Rodriguez (14)
                      HR - Perry (5)

                      The A's complete a 4 game sweep of the Rangers with a balanced attack and timely hitting. Eric Chavez and Vernon Wells drove in 2 runs a piece and Tim Hudson pitched 6 solid innings to keep the Rangers in check. Wells was named ESPN Player of the Game and the A's move to 55-23 on the year with a huge 12.5 game lead over the Seattle Mariners, who have lost 3 in a row. The A's now travel to San Francisco for a 3 game series to end the month of June.
