I like the addition of the World Championships into this. Looks like their killing the competition.

yea, Crosby and Thornton are lighting up the lamps. But I'm starting to get worried about Vincent Lecavalier, not doing as well.

Re: *The Crosby Effect* A Penguins Dynasty 2.0

The Montreal Canadiens welcomed back Patrick Roy with open arms on Thursday, announcing that his No. 33 will be raised to the rafters of the Bell Centre in a special pre-game ceremony on Nov. 22 when they host the Boston Bruins.

"It's a great day," said Roy at the Thursday media conference. "It was already an honour to be among the 44 Canadiens players in the Hall of Fame and now they've announced that my number will be retired and be with two legendary goaltenders, Jacques Plante and Ken Dryden."

The Hall of Fame goaltender led Montreal to Stanley Cups in 1986 and 1993 and is considered as one of the top goaltenders in NHL history, posting a record 551 wins in 19 seasons with the Canadiens and the Colorado Avalanche.
"This is obviously a well-deserved honor for Patrick," said Avalanche president Pierre LaCroix in a release. "To have number 33 hang from the rafters in Montreal, a place where the game's greatest goaltender began his career, is truly special,"
The announcement officially welcomes the star netminder back to the Canadiens family. His career in Montreal ended abruptly in Dec. 1995, when he reacted with anger when left in goal by coach Mario Tremblay while being shelled by the Detroit Red Wings. He demanded a trade and was sent to Colorado, where he won a Cup with the Avalanche the following spring.
"My leaving was seen as abandoning the team but I also had a feeling I was being abandoned," explained Roy. "Yes, I'd have liked to leave on a different note but there's nothing we can do about it today.

"The message I'm trying to send is that it's time for me to move on and I hope it's time for them. I'm very happy to come back to the Canadiens family."

Canadiens legend and current general manager Bob Gainey thinks too much has been made of Roy's split from the team.

"I don't know so much about reconcile - he's not the only person who has had a problem with authority figures in his employment place," said Gainey to the Canadian Press.

"(Raising his number) includes Patrick in what we're trying to do with the 100th anniversary," explained Gainey to the Canadian Press. "Patrick had a tremendous impact late in those 100 years. You just can't turn away from his career as a player. He was terrific."
The Canadiens have been retiring numbers of their past greats each year leading up to their 100th anniversary in December 2009. Roy's jersey would be the 15th to be taken out of circulation, joining the numbers of Plante (1), Doug Harvey (2), Jean Beliveau (4), Bernard Geoffrion (5), Howie Morenz (7), Maurice Richard (9), Guy Lafleur (10), Yvan Cournoyer and Dickie Moore (12), Henri Richard (16), Serge Savard (18), Larry Robinson (19), Gainey (23) and Dryden (29).
Roy will also be the sixth player in NHL history to have his number retired by two different NHL teams, joining Wayne Gretzky (Oilers and Kings), Mark Messier (Oilers and Rangers), Ray Bourque (Avalanche and Bruins), Gordie Howe (Red Wings and Whalers) and Bobby Hull (Blackhawks and Jets).

Roy, who shares the same birthday as fellow Hall of Famer
Mario Lemieux, was selected by the Canadiens in the third round of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft.
The Quebec City native holds or shares six team records with the Canadiens, including most combined playoff and regular season games (665), most minutes played including playoffs (38,882), most games played in one season including playoffs (82 in 1992-93), fewest losses in one season (5 in 1988-89), longest home winning streak (14 from 12/12/1988 - 03/22/1989) and longest home undefeated streak (29 from 10/08/1988 - 04/01/1989).
"People don't realize how hard it is to be mentally ready for 82 games and the playoffs," said former teammate Kirk Muller to the Canadian Press. "Every time he came into the room he was focused on winning."
Roy also won most of his hardware with the Canadiens, with two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, three Vezina Trophies and four Jennings Trophies.
In 12 seasons with Montreal, Roy compiled 289 career wins, 29 shoutouts and a 2.78 goals-against average. He also had a 70-42 record in the postseason with a 2.46 goals-against average.
Roy's No. 33 was also retired by the Avalanche in 2003.

Left wing Nikita Filatov, the sixth overall pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets, will be sidelined for 10-to-14 days with a lower leg injury.
The Blue Jackets announced on Friday that Filatov, 18, will miss the club's rookie camp in Traverse City, Michigan because of the injury.
"Nikita has an old injury that is bothering him, so he will not accompany our rookie team to Traverse City for the NHL Prospects Tournament," said Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson. "He'll rehab the injury here and be re- evaluated in the next 10 days to two weeks."
Filatov notched 32 goals and 34 assists with 90 penalty minutes in 34 games for CSKA of the Russian Junior League during the 2007-08 season. He also represented Russia in the 2008 World Under-18 Championships, scoring three goals and tallying six assists en route to a silver medal.
The Blue Jackets open their main training camp on September 19.

                Miikka Kiprusoff
                Position: G
                Team: Calgary Flames
                Age: 31
                Contract Expires: 2014
                Salary Cap Hit: $5.833M
Comment: His numbers have declined every year he's been in Calgary, but Kiprusoff has won 121 games over the last three seasons and is still in the upper echelon of NHL goaltenders.

                Jean-Sebastien Giguere

                Contract Expires: 2011
                Salary Cap Hit: $6.0M
Comment: Not as durable as some of the other top goaltenders, but Giguere is an elite puck stopper who has proven to be at his best when the chips are down in the postseason.

                Player:
                Roberto Luongo
                Position: G

                Contract Expires: 2010
                Salary Cap Hit: $6.75M
Comment: Front and centre in the discussion of the game's best goaltenders, but limited playoff experience and a contract that ends in a couple of seasons prevents Luongo from earning higher placement.

                Salary Cap Hit: $7.0M
Comment: One of the game's most prolific scorers, Spezza is undoubtedly going to have tremendous career scoring numbers, yet he still needs to work on his all-around game to reach the next level.

                Contract Expires: 2012
                Salary Cap Hit: $5.2M
Comment: A veritable senior citizen for this list, Brodeur still has four more years on his current deal and his numbers over the past two seasons (2.17 GAA, .921 SVPCT) have been among the best of his certain Hall of Fame career.

                Contract Expires: 2011 (RFA)
                Salary Cap Hit: $3.125M
Comment: A rising star who already has back-to-back seasons of more than 30 goals and 60 points, to say nothing of his cut-rate contract this early in his career.

                Salary Cap Hit: $2.4M
Comment: After a 69-point rookie season, the skilled Swedish playmaker sure looks like he could have 100-point potential in the not-too-distant future.

                Salary Cap Hit: $4.0M
Comment: Already has back-to-back seasons with 82 games, 62 points and a plus-15 rating, which is impressive in its own right, let alone doing it for a subpar Panthers team.

                Salary Cap Hit: $5.25M
Comment: Turned in a spectacular 2007-2008 season, emerging as possibly the most electrifying young offensive defenceman in the game.

                Salary Cap Hit: $3.725M
Comment: Diminutive playmaker made a seamless transition to the NHL, putting up 72 points as a rookie, and looks like he'll be a big-time scorer for many years.

Comment: Hit 100 points as a 21-year-old and hasn't reached those heights since, but it's hard to get too critical after 113 goals over the last three seasons.

Comment: In the course of one season, Richards went from a promising young checking centre to face of the Flyers franchise, scoring better than a point per game. His reward? A new 12-year contract.

Comment: Appeared ready to challenge for best player in the game status before the Lightning's tailspin last season took the wind out of his sails. With a better supporting cast, and a career contract in his pocket, Lecavalier will be better this year.

Re: *The Crosby Effect* A Penguins Dynasty 2.0

Wayne Gretzky doesn't believe the new Russian hockey league poses a threat to the NHL and won't be surprised to see another NHL team eventually end up in Ontario.
Those are just two of the issues he touched on during a wide-ranging speech to the Economic Club of Canada on Friday afternoon.
The Great One told the crowd he was offered an opportunity to go to Europe after retiring from the New York Rangers in 1999 but didn't see any point in playing in a second-tier league. He believes many of today's stars will have the same reaction if they're approached by a KHL team.
"The bottom line is there's only one National Hockey League," said Gretzky. "When I retired I got an offer to go play in Swizerland and it was a crazy amount of money. I remember thinking, `You know what, it's all fun and that's great but there's only one National Hockey League.'
"And if you can't play with the best and against the best it's just not the same."
Gretzky delivered an engaging speech that touched on some of the hurdles he had to overcome early in life before taking questions from the audience. Dressed in a sharp grey suit with a burgundy tie, he demonstrated a pretty sharp wit and seemed completely comfortable while addressing the crowd.
The part owner and coach of the Phoenix Coyotes says he isn't sure if the NHL will ever add another Canadian franchise but does think there would be a market for one in Southwestern Ontario.
"I don't think there's any question that Hamilton or Kitchener or that area, that region, could definitely support a National Hockey League team," said Gretzky. "It's one of those things where there's so much red tape .
"Down the road, I can possibly see a team in Hamilton or Kitchener being part of the National Hockey League. . These kind of things have a way of working themselves out."
One city he's not sure about is Winnipeg.
Gretzky believes there's plenty of passion and support for the game there but thinks the league might have outgrown a market of that size from a sponsorship perspective.
"I think people have to realize and understand that it's not so much from a season ticket point of view," he said. "I'm sure the people of Winnipeg would sell out 16,000 every single night.
"It has to do more with the corporate end of things and the commercial side of hockey. That's where we've come to in this day and age, it's just gotten bigger and bigger and stronger."
Stephen Harper, Arnold Schwarzenegger and John McCain are among those who have recently addressed the Economic Club of Canada. Gretzky was the first sports figure to accept an invitation.
"We're starting at the very top," said Mark Adler, the club's president and CEO.
The 47-year-old spoke about several different issues during his half hour on stage:
                      - On the recent NHL lockout: "I often wonder why we had a lockout with the salaries the way they are now. And the direction that they're going."
                      - On commissioner Gary Bettman: "I think the commissioner has done a tremendous job . I think the biggest legacy that the commissioner and his office will leave to the National Hockey League is that he made the franchises in Edmonton, Calgary and Ottawa so much more stable than they were 10 years ago."
                      - On funding amateur athletes: "It's hard as an individual to stand here and say that we should pour more funds or more money into Olympic sports or amateur sports. (There are) so many less fortunate people, so many diseases that we could be putting dollars into to help find cures for. It becomes a fine line."
                      - On success: "Obviously, you've got to be a little bit lucky in life - I don't know for whatever reason the good lord blessed me and my family. But you have to make your own luck too. That just comes from hard work and pushing yourself to an elite level, to levels that you don't even think you can go to."
Gretzky was able to do that during his career and is arguably the best player the NHL has ever seen. After retiring, he remembers some people suggesting that his absence would leave a void in the game.
                      However, that hasn't happened.
"The game itself is so much bigger and so much better than any individual player," said Gretzky. "We're lucky enough now in the National Hockey League to have players like Sidney Crosby and (Alexander) Ovechkin.
"Players of that calibre have carried the mantle and done a tremendous job of promoting the National Hockey League and making our game bigger and better than it's ever been."

The Montreal Canadiens have acquired forward Robert Lang from the Chicago Blackhawks, in return for a second-round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft (acquired from Toronto along with Greg Pateryn, in return for Mikhaïl Grabovski, July 3, 2008).
When asked if the acquisition of Lang meant free agent Mats Sundin was no longer in their plans, Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey replied "yes."
Gainey admitted that the discussions with Sundin were not fruitful.
"At no time did I have any feeling we had (Sundin) locked up or anyone else did."
"We had developed a priority and had we been able to entice Mats Sundin to comeback and play and comeback and play with the Canadiens, we would have done that as early as June of this summer," he explained.
With little for certain about the Sundin situation, the Canadiens decided to move in a different direction.
"We also developed back-up plans and today we decided to use one back-up plan instead of continue on a course that didn't seem as if it was going to be fruitful. There was no indication that we would see Mats Sundin with our team."
As for Sundin's plans, Gainey explained that he had no idea when or if the forward would return to the NHL.
"(Sundin) didn't give me any indication he was going to make a decision and my hockey department and I were not prepared to wait for a player who may or may not decide to play in November, December or January or February."
In Lang, the Canadiens get a veteran forward with the ability to generate offence. The 37-year-old played 76 games with the Blackhawks in 2007-08, recording 54 points (21 goals, 33 assists), posting a plus-9 rating while serving 50 penalty minutes. It was the 8th consecutive season in his NHL career with 50 points or more.
"He adds to our depth and experience and to the level of our attack," explained Gainey.
Lang has played in 875 regular-season games with six different teams (Los Angeles, Boston, Pittsburgh, Washington, Detroit and Chicago), recording 635 points (234 goals and 401 assists), including 77 powerplay goals.
"Added to the group that's there, I feel we responded to our needs for this year," said Gainey.
Lang was excited about the deal.
"You never want to get traded or have to move your family, but I think it's going to be a great situation," Lang told the Canadian Press. "It's a great hockey town."
His most productive season was in 2000-01 when he recorded 80 points (32 goals, 48 assists) in 82 games with the Penguins.
The Teplice, Czech Republic native was a 7th round selection, 133rd overall, by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. He played in the 2004 NHL All-Star game as a member of the Washington Capitals.
The Canadiens also announced the signing of defenceman Patrice Brisebois to a one-year contract. As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Brisebois, rejoined the Canadiens as a free agent on August 3, 2007. During the 2007-08 season, he registered 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists) and 26 penalty minutes in 43 games with the Canadiens, averaging 16:49 minutes of ice time per game.
The 37-year-old spent the first 14 seasons of his career in a Canadiens' uniform. He played two seasons with the Colorado Avalanche in 2005-06 and 2006-07. The Montreal native thas played in 947 career regular season games in the NHL, totaling 402 points (93 goals, 309 assists).
Brisebois was selected in the second round by the Canadiens (30th overall) in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft.
