    NOT OUT OF IT YET
Cyclones smash K-State 45-17 to inch closer to bowl eligibility.

THE LITTLE APPLE, Kansas- If you’ve followed Iowa State even for a second throughout the three years Coach Mitchell has been at the sticks then you know one thing, heart and determination coupled with proving the experts wrong is what drives this team.

After last weeks 37-30 loss to Texas Tech on their home turf which dropped the Cyclones to 4-3 overall you just knew Iowa State would march into Manhattan with bad intentions.

    And boy did they ever.

Already up 7-0 after a 14-play 70-yard drive which lasted 4:14 the Cyclones All-American CB Joey Williams picked off QB Jeremy Hodges for his fourth pick on the season and returned it 24 yards to the house giving Iowa State a 14-0 lead after one.

The Cyclones would go on to put 14 more points up on the board before Kansas State kicker Andrae’ Lamb booted through a 23-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter to put K-State on the board and bring them to within 25.

A promising first possession of the second half for the Wildcats would be short lived as QB Jeremy Hodges would throw his second pick of the game this time to CB Richard Shaw consequently giving Iowa State the ball back with the opportunity to add to their seemingly insurmountable 25-point lead.

The third quarter proved to be true freshman tailback Jamie McCoy’s quarter as he scored twice, once on an 80-yard catch from senior QB Travis Baker, who went on to only attempt one pass in fill in duty for a shaken up Jeremy Allen and then again on an 80-yard breakaway run where the only phrase that came to my mind is…Speed killz baby!

McCoy would finish the night with 14 carries, 2 receptions, 232 all-purpose yards, and 2 touchdowns.

“Although impressed with our offense, more so Jeremy Allen and our passing game, I was more impressed with our defense,” said Coach Mitchell. “Take away Mark Miller’s 71-yard touchdown catch late in the third and our defense played great, a far cry from last week when were we shredded apart by Texas Tech and their vaunted passing game.”

Iowa State (5-3, 3-2) will now head home where they’ll look to get their sixth win of the season against another Kansas school as the Kansas Jayhawks roll into town with revenge on their minds after Iowa State torched them last year in Lawrence 45-31 on their way to a perfect season.

      SACK ATTACK
Cyclones get to QB Chris Flowers 7x in 27-14 victory to become bowl eligible.

AMES, Iowa- If I were to ask you who won Saturday night’s Big 12 match-up between the Iowa State Cyclones and the Kansas Jayhawks based on only the box score the obvious answer would be the Kansas Jayhawks, you would be wrong.

Iowa State (6-3, 4-2) was held to only 189 yards of total offense and 40 yards passing yet beat the Kansas Jayhwaks (2-7, 2-4) by the score of 27-14.

      How you say?

My only answer would be timely defensive plays, since it’s not like the Jayhawks were stymied on offense any gaining a cool 300 yards.

Iowa State senior QB Jeremy Allen, who transferred from Kansas to Iowa State prior to the 2015 season had his worst offensive output as Iowa State’s signal caller completing 6-of-10 passes for 40 yards and zero touchdowns.

“He would’ve been called upon to do more but I don’t know if it was the wet conditions or the nerves but he just didn’t look like he had it tonight,” said Coach Mitchell. “This was a massive game for us and one we needed to win with Colorado and Missouri upcoming and we couldn’t afford to lose it.”

Another Iowa State player that just didn’t look comfortable tonight, at least on the offensive side of the ball was true freshman tailback Jamie McCoy. McCoy was held to only 36 yards on 16 carries for an average rush of 2.2 yards and zero touchdowns.

However, he contributed in other ways.

McCoy’s 86-yard kickoff return touchdown with 48 seconds left in the first half to put the Cyclones up 17-14 swung the games momentum Iowa State’s way never to be seen by the Jayhawks again.

Iowa State’s 81st ranked defense played a bend but don’t break style throughout the second half and it proved to be successful as they held the Kansas Jayhawks out of the endzone and off the scoreboard to capture their sixth win of the season by the final score of 27-14.

Somehow, no matter how dead you think last year’s national champs are they have positioned themselves perfectly for a late season run at the Big 12 North title as their next two games pit them against the north leading Colorado Buffaloes and the 6-3, 4-2 Missouri Tigers before finishing up the year out of conference against the struggling 3-6 TCU Horned Frogs.

        PAPER BUFFALOES
Colorado forgets to show up, Cyclones stun Buffaloes 34-3.

BOULDER, Colorado- Iowa State (7-3, 5-2) lead behind a suffocating defense stunned the 14th ranked Colorado Buffaloes 34-3 in Boulder on Saturday November 5, 2016.

Colorado, equipped with the nations 8th ranked offense was completely shutdown throughout the game gaining a measly 89 yards of total offense which only allowed them to put up 3 points on the scoreboard which didn’t even get tallied until late in the third quarter.

“I’ve never seen anyone of my defenses play as lights out as this defense did today,” said Coach Mitchell. “It was truly a defensive performance for the ages and a performance which will stick with me for a long time.”

Colorado (9-2, 5-2) didn’t get their first 1st down of the game until there was less than 2:26 left to play, IN THE SECOND QUARTER. In that time Iowa State forced 4-straight three and outs and picked of one Dustin Bonner pass. Colorado was held to only 15 yards heading into halftime.

Colorado, which was on track to make it to their 6th Big 12 Championship game, will now need to root for fellow Big 12 North member Missouri next week to knock off Iowa State in order to send them to the Championship game instead of the Cyclones.

“It’s tough to know we had a shot at sealing up the North this afternoon, at home, and we couldn’t do it,” said Colorado Buffaloes head coach Dan Hawkins. “Having to hope for an Iowa State loss next week wasn’t how we envisioned getting to the title game but I guess that’s all we have to hope for now…we blew it.”

“How we even have a shot at playing for the Big 12 title I will never know,” said Coach Mitchell. “But here we are once again, controlling our own destiny.”

You can’t fault Colorado impact MLB Zach Robinson for the loss as he was all over the field as he tallied 14 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss and a forced fumble.

As previously stated Iowa State’s Big 12 Championship game aspirations all come down to next week at home where they’ll take on the 7-3 Missouri Tigers, win they’re in, lose they’re out…it’s as simple as that.

“What better team to go against for a birth in the Big 12 title game than our rival to the South,” said Mitchell? “This is exactly the type of situation that makes these rivalry games so much fun, it should be a blast!”

Yeah pulling out the win over Kansas then going to Colorado and pulling off the huge upset was big for us, now lets see if that momentum will stick with us when we face a loaded Missouri team.

                  ORDER RESTORED
Tigers barely break a sweat in 11-point victory over rival Cyclones.

AMES, Iowa- The world is officially back to normal after last season’s bizarre national championship winning season by the 14-0 Cyclones.

Missouri QB Brennan Henry and WR Patrick Diggs lead the way as Missouri played spoiler Saturday night ending Iowa State’s chances of making it back to Kansas City to play in their second consecutive Big 12 Championship game.

Brennan Henry, who did his best to forget last seasons 2 interception performance against the Cyclones, completed 22-of-28 passes for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns.

His go to guy, true freshman receiver Patrick Diggs, who caught five passes for 107 yards and one 70-yard touchdown early in the second quarter to put Missouri on top 14-3.

“My performance against these guys last year was unacceptable,” said Henry. “I told our guys before the game tonight that I wasn’t going to let them down again, that I was going to make the plays that needed to be made and to look to me when this team needed to make something happen. I’m just glad I was able to live up to my word.”

Missouri’s 68th ranked defense sure didn’t play like it holding Iowa State to 227 yards of total offense and 56 yards passing.

QB Jeremy Allen, who completed 9-of-15 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown, was under immense pressure all night as Missouri continually brought the house as they sacked Allen 3 times and hit him 8 times in all.

“It seemed like they brought the house on every play,” said Allen. “I barely had time to hand off on running plays let alone find an open receiver, it was like they were through are line before the ball was even snapped.”

There’s no such thing as a good loss…or is there?

“I’m not going to say I’m happy we lost,” said Coach Mitchell. “That would be ridiculous but what I will say is I’m glad the CPU didn’t try to give us this one, which it has a tendency to do on occasion either by throwing moronic picks or bad play calling. We were outplayed tonight and lost to a better team, they deserved to win.”

The loss by Iowa State now opens the door for Colorado to go to the Big 12 Championship game and represent the North if they can take care of Nebraska next week in Lincoln. Colorado would win the north thanks to beating Missouri head to head back in week 4 30-10. Yes this game looks like a five-star lock but in the world of college football anything can and often does happen.

However, a loss by the Buffaloes would send Missouri (8-3, 6-2) to the Big 12 Championship game as the loss would drop Colorado to 5-3 in conference play.

Jeez, 5 undefeated teams - that's crazy. At least you won't have Wyoming and E. Mich. in the Nat'l Championship... Good luck vs. TCU.

lol, it's been one of those crazy seasons in the Top 25 for sure. I guess that's what happens when you surpass 9 seasons.

Yeah 5 undefeated teams now days is unheard of. I think Wyoming and E.Michigan matched up against each other would be kinda cool, not in "The Game" but maybe the Sugar or something.

Missed 37-yard FG with seconds remaining doom Horned Frogs.

AMES, Iowa- It’s been said and documented on more than one occasion that when Coach Mitchell picks up the sticks for the last game of the regular season anything can and often does happen.

In 2014, the first year at the controls for Iowa State coach Mitchell and the 6-5 Cyclones marched north to face the 2-9 Minnesota Golden Gophers in the homer dome expecting to walk away with in easy victory but were thoroughly dismantled by Goldie – final score 44-10 Minnesota.

Last season, 2015, the 1-10 Cougars of Washington State came to Ames and gave all the undefeated Cyclones they could handle taking the game to triple overtime before bowing out in the end 34-31.

This season the 5-6 TCU Horned Frogs came to town with their bowl hopes squarely on the line and did more than hold their own as the Horned Frogs lead for the better part of all four quarters courtesy of rock solid defense which is on record as being the fastest and most fundamentally sound defenses Coach Mitchell has ever faced, unfortunately for TCU they let one late touchdown with less than 70 seconds left slip through the cracks which would go on to be the games deciding touchdown as Iowa State prevailed victorious 13-12 to finish out the regular season 8-4.

“Fast, fast, fast,” said Coach Mitchell. “Looking back at the game now I shouldn’t have been shocked that TCU’s defense was so good I mean they do play in Texas and teams that play in Texas, California, Florida places like that are just operating on a very different level than the rest of the country. However, I was in awe throughout most of the game, they were bigger, faster, and stronger than our guys…it was actually very troublesome to really see how much work is still needed to get to the talent level of one of Texas’s bottom of the barrel teams.”

With TCU about to put the game away with 3:39 remaining in the fourth quarter up by the score of 12-7 and the ball resting at the Iowa State 16-yard line junior QB Chris Brown made his first and only mistake of the game throwing into double coverage resulting in a David George interception which was the spark and prayer this Iowa State team was so desperately looking for.

Despite already throwing two interceptions in the game senior QB Jeremy Allen gathered himself and lead an 11-play, 85-yard drive which culminated in a Jamie McCoy 1-yard touchdown run that put the Cyclones ahead 13-12 after Iowa State FB Mark Jennings failed to convert the 2-point conversion that would’ve put the Cyclones up by the score of 15-12.

Only down by 1-point with 1:01 remaining and three timeouts QB Chris Brown orchestrated the two minute offense to perfection using both the sideline and the middle of the field but unfortunately for Brown and the entire TCU offense their efforts would be all for not as freshman kicker Josh Pettit came up inches short on what would’ve been a 37-yard game winning field goal that would’ve sent TCU bowling.

“We were lucky,” said Coach Mitchell. “In a way I kind of feel bad since they thoroughly out played us from start to finish and deserved to win this game and have the opportunity to go bowling.”

Now all that’s left for the 8-4 Cyclones is to wait like all of the other bowl eligible teams for selection Sunday to see when and where they’ll be playing their 13th game of the season.
