FB Mark Jennings fights for TD in 1OT | WR Alex Montgomery (7rec,91yds,td) | Jack Boley 4th D TD run in 2OT

K Michael Williams knocks through GM-winner | WSU fumble in 3OT | K Jeremy Romero GM tying 50-yd FG

      THE PERFECT STORM
Cyclones survive triple overtime heart stopper to cap off undefeated regular season.

AMES, Iowa- A driving snow storm, bitterly cold temperatures, immense pressure, an extremely motivated 1-win team, and a CPU game engine that seemingly has it out for Coach Mitchell in game twelve match-ups all factored into Iowa State’s near catastrophic failure at home in the Cyclones season finale, a finale that was supposed to be over by halftime.

“I knew we were in for a dog fight after our second-straight three and out on our second possession of the game,” said Coach Mitchell. “After our first series ended with a punt I thought to myself, “O.k. so the Cougs came out with a ton of emotion no big deal…that emotion will eventually subside and then it will just be talent on talent and once that happens we’ll start to put some points on the board and we’ll end this thing before the fourth.” Well obviously that didn’t happen.”

The first three and half quarters were of a mixture of great defense coupled with some sloppy execution exhibited by both offenses on more than one occasion…it had to be the snow, right?

The last 1:50 of the game turned into pure chaos starting with a Clint Willis touchdown run with 1:09 remaining which capped off a 13 play, 70-yard drive that suddenly made the Cyclone faithful more than a little nervous as they looked up at the scoreboard only to see the Cyclones holding a marginal 3-point lead at 17-14.

Iowa State came into Saturday recovering all six onside kicks that the opposition attempted…with a perfect season and a potential national championship game hanging in the balance there’s no way the Cyclones let the Cougars recover, right?

Washington State junior kicker Jeremy Romero executed the Cougars on-side kick attempt flawlessly, coming up with the improbable recovery, CB Jeff Cleveland on the Washington State 43 yard line.

“I went into complete panic mode when I saw they recovered the on-side kick,” said Coach Mitchell.

The Cougars then went on a 1:04 drive that was capped of by a game tying Jeremy Romero 50-yard field with 5 seconds remaining. You could hear a pin drop inside Jack Trice Stadium as the Cyclone faithful looked on in disbelief.

“What got lost in the Cougars last second scoring drive was the fact that they were able to convert two-straight 4th down attempts against our defense,” said Mitchell. “That is absolutely unacceptable. I don’t know if our defense just got tired or if their nerves got the better of them of what but that was a killer, the Cougars should have never had the opportunity to get into field goal range. But, damn was that a kick or what, 50 yards in a driving snow storm and it looked as though he could have made it from 60 yards…that’s stepping up big in a high pressure situation…gotta respect that.

The Cougars and Cyclones traded touchdown punches in the first overtime making the score 24-24 going in the second OT.

Iowa State’s second overtime possession is going to be remembered for one of the ballsyiest fourth down decisions this season. On 4th and goal from the 3-yard line Coach Mitchell said the hell with a field goal…we’re getting the touchdown, mind you a NATIONAL TITLE is on the line if the Cyclones get stopped and the Cougars score any amount of points. Not only did he elect to forgo the field goal he called a QB sneak…from the 3-yard line! However, it worked as Jack Boley lowered his head and rammed his way into the end zone giving Iowa State the 31-24 lead.

“I never even gave it a second thought,” said Mitchell. “I knew with the way the CPU was playing if we didn’t get six we were as good as dead. I had a gut instinct that the CPU was going to score a touchdown on their next possession by the way it was picking apart our defense with relative ease.”

Washington State did just that, scoring on a 4-yard Courtney Parham touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone which again tied the game up forcing the game into a third overtime period.

After 62 points, four quarters and 2 overtime periods Iowa State finally got the big break they had been waiting for. On 2nd and 8 from the Iowa State 18-yard line Washington State QB Chris Archie pitched the ball to HB Clint Willis on a QB option only to see the ball bounce off the back of RT Taylor Woods resulting in a fumble which LE Joe Williams was able to pounce on giving the ball back the Cyclones with a chance to score and finally end this horrible nightmare of a game.

Coach Mitchell wasted not one down as he immediately sent out Mr. Automatic true freshman Michael Williams to attempt a 42-yard field, normally an extremely difficult kick but Williams knocked it through with relative ease thus giving Iowa State the 34-31 victory and an undefeated regular season.

“Michael told me point blank, “I can make this coach, send me out”, so I did and he stepped up and knocked it though for us,” said Mitchell. “That type of game will put you into an early grave as a head coach…WAAAAY to close for comfort, I thought I was going have a heart attack right then and there on the sideline every time we failed to hold them out of the end zone during those overtimes. I thought, this is it…there goes our perfect season and a chance to play in the national title game. But luckily destiny has dumped us yet; let’s hope she stays with us long enough for us to see this miraculous season through.”

EPIC COMEBACK VAULTS ISU INTO TITLE GAME
21-point 4th quarter sends ISU to New Orleans to take on familiar foe.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri- Iowa State (13-0, 9-0) won their first ever Big 12 title with the largest fourth quarter comeback in Big 12 Championship Game history.

The Cyclones' 27-24 last second victory over Texas Tech Saturday night in the 2015 Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship game certainly sends Iowa State to the Bowl Championship Series Championship game in New Orleans, Louisiana where they’ll face Coach Mitchell’s ex-team the Kentucky Wildcats, the SEC Championship game winner.

Early on the stage looked far too big for the Cinderella Cyclones as their offense struggled and their defense was on the verge of allowing the No. 1 offense of the Red Raiders to blow the game wide open.

The Cyclone offense, which only gained 157 yards through the first three quarters of play found little success or rhythm partly because of the loss of sophomore QB Jack Boley, who went out early in the first quarter with a bruised shoulder after taking a awkward shot by red shirt senior LE Brett Johnson.

In the wake of Boley’s injury Coach Mitchell gave the nod to red shirt junior QB Luke Day, Day looked lost throughout his time in relief completing 6-of-8 passes for just 56 yards and an interception.

Facing a 17-6 deficit heading into the second half Coach Mitchell made a bold decision and elected to put in third-string QB Travis Baker to see if he could give the Cyclones laboring offense a jump start. Baker, who hadn’t played a single down of collegiate football up to that point took control of the game from the get-go and was one of the key contributors in the Cyclones remarkable 21-point comeback.

However it’s hard to single out one person when a team goes on to score 21 points in less than five minutes while holding the opposition out of the end zone which in the case just happened to be the No. 1 ranked offense in the nation.

“It was a total team effort,” said Coach Mitchell. “I know that saying has becomes cliché but it is the absolute truth…you don’t score 21 unanswered points in less than five minutes, pressure the opposing QB into throwing 3 picks and force the No. 1 offense of Texas Tech into five-straight three and outs if everybody isn’t giving it their all.”

Red Raider QB Dennis Tyson, who was filling in for an injured Jeremy McGill, threw three picks in the final four minutes which consequently lead to 13 Cyclone points, including Michael Williams 40-yard game winner as time expired.

“We’ve played our last two games in bitterly cold temperatures,” said true freshman kicker Michael Williams, who made all four of his field goal attempts on the night with the biggest coming as time expired. “So I guess we’ll have to escape it by heading to the warm and toasty Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana for the BCS National Championship game.”

“This team, this program, this season…has been remarkable, said Coach Mitchell. “The fact that we’re playing in the BCS National Championship game after only two years is unbelievable, but the fact that we’re playing my previously built Kentucky Wildcats is just out of this world…I would have never thought in a million years that this had the possibility of taking place.”

THE ONE WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!
No. 1 Iowa State v No. 2 Kentucky, College Football Immortality Awaits

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana- The BCS championship game participants are always subject of some controversy, however, that is not the case this year. There’s little to debate when talking about whether or not Kentucky and Iowa State are the two best teams in the nation. Both participants come into New Orleans undefeated with perfect 13-0 records, the only two teams garnishing such records, and both have taken their respective conferences best shot.

Both teams surprisingly enough have traveled a similar road to get to Championship Game. Neither team has really outplayed or impressively beat the top echelon talent on their schedules but both have stepped up and answered the bell when they’ve needed to.

Against teams .500 or better both Kentucky and Iowa State are 5-0. Kentucky’s average margin of victory is 5 points while Iowa State’s is eerily similar with their average margin of victory coming by 5.8 points.

Kentucky Head Coach Joker Phillips, who took over the head coaching duties after the departure of Coach Mitchell prior to the 2014 season, has scrapped Coach Mitchell’s run first throw second philosophy and has turned Kentucky into this decades second coming of the run-n-shoot which was/is so famously used by June Jones and Mouse Davis.

Kentucky red shirt senior and Heisman winning QB Willie Mobley has flourished under Phillips new philosophy throwing for an NCAA high 4,132 yards and 48 touchdowns.

Mobley’s go-to receivers are senior WR Anthony Stewart and red-shirt senior WR Jeff Anderson. The two have combined to haul in 172 passes for 2,517 yards and 31 touchdowns.

“If we have one weakness on the defensive side of the ball I would say it’s our pass defense which plays a bend but don’t break style,” said Coach Mitchell. “I fear with Kentucky’s ability to chuck the ball all over the yard that will be the area we most need to focus on and tighten up as that’s our achillies heel. But as long as we cover as well as we did against Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship game I think we’ll be able to take the constant aerial assault Kentucky will be looking to knock us out with.”

Iowa State couldn’t have more of a contrasting style offensively if they tried, as Coach Mitchell loves nothing more than to run the ball right down the opponent’s throat.

Handling the bulk of the carries in the backfield is true sophomore tailback Perry Booker, who has rushed for 1,033 yards off 247 carries and 9 touchdowns so far this season.

The Cyclones can sling the rock when they need to they just prefer not to but if they indeed have to throw it then they look to another true sophomore QB Jack Boley, who has thrown for 1,681 yards this season 14 touchdowns and only 4 picks.

The fact that this game will pit current Coach Mitchell recruited and developed players versus old Coach Mitchell recruited and developed players just adds to the lure of this match-up.

“It will be a little weird but yet rewarding seeing my old players on the other sideline,” said Mitchell. “It’s going to be like one gigantic family re-union, some will be happy to see me while others my be still upset by my departure…but all in all it will be a game that will go down as much more than the 2015 National Championship Game…if that’s at all possible.”

Yet another supernatural storyline in this game is the site in which the 2015 BCS Championship Game will be played, the Louisiana Superdome where Coach Mitchell brought the Kentucky Wildcats twice -- 2012 and 2013, only to lose both times by a combined 9 total points.

“Once it was confirmed to me that this game was going to be played inside the Superdome I said to myself, “Of course it is. Why would it be played anywhere else?” I guess the universe wants to give me another shot to exercise the Superdome’s demons, hopefully the third time will be a charm,” said Mitchell.

The 2015 Allstate BCS National Championship game will be nationally televised on FOX, and kickoff is set for 8 p.m. on Friday January 8th, 2016.

Thanks, I would say nearly 85-90 percent of them, yes he was.

                            Let the celebrations begin...

WR Anthony Stewart: 6rec,118yds,td (top left). FB Mark Jennings: 1st Qtr. TD (bottom left).
QB Jack Boley (top right). HB Perry Booker (bottom right).

                            A Cinderella Story
Iowa State caps off dream season with 15-point win over 'Cats in Championship Game.

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – Iowa State’s impressive dismantling of one of the nations most potent offenses in the 2015 Allstate BCS National Championship game has finally begun to silence the critics and cynics that scoffed at the idea that Iowa State was worthy enough to take part in college football’s biggest games.

Iowa State hit Kentucky in the mouth early and often, racking up nearly 300 yards of total offense before the first half had even come to a close. 217 of Iowa State’s 277 first half yards came by way of their passing game, a shocking site to all that bare witness.

“I built that team,” said Coach Mitchell smugly. “I know that their front four and their linebackers are the heart of that defense and that their secondary is their area of weakness…so I game planned to exploit it. Our game plan coming into tonight was to attack their secondary as much as we could, I was extremely confident that if Boley was able to read their coverage’s quickly and hit the receiver that was matched up one on one then there wasn’t a chance in hell we were going to lose this game…sure enough that’s exactly what we were able to do.”

True sophomore QB Jack Boley hit on 78 percent of his passes in the first half for 217 yards and one touchdown to WR Alex Montgomery in the second quarter.

Kentucky (13-1) showed glimpses of a team worthy of being in the BCS Championship game but overall looked powerless to do anything against a united and focused defense like that of the Iowa State Cyclones.

Heisman winning quarterbacks haven’t faired too well in Championship games and tonight that trend continued as QB Willie Mobley, who came in averaging 318 yards passing a game, threw for only 175 yards on 22 attempts, 2 touchdowns and one interception.

Mobley did however break Tim Couch’s all-time record for most passing yards in a season which stood at 4,275 yards. The new record which now stands at 4,286 yards was set mid-way through the 4th quarter on a 21-yard slant route to WR Anthony Stewart.

Iowa State rode the coattails of sophomore tailback Perry Booker much of the second half after Coach Mitchell started to see signs of fatigue on the part of the Wildcats early on in the third quarter which proved to be the correct call as Booker ran his way to a 104-yard rushing performance and the game’s most valuable player award for offense.

The defensive player of the game award went to Iowa State senior strong safety Dwayne Washington, who tallied a team high seven tackles, an interception and one pass deflection.

“Nobody ever thought we would get here except for a select few, no less win the thing, but here we are…BCS National Champions and nobody can ever take that away from us,” said Dwayne Washington. “This defense was highly underrated prior to the season and all we ever heard from the experts is how we’re going to get exposed once we play good teams but last I checked we shut down both the number one offense in Texas Tech and then here tonight the number five offense so when exactly are we supposed to get exposed?”

Iowa State’s 15-point win gives Coach Mitchell his second ever national title and first since he won one with Wyoming during his NCAA 2008 days.

“I think this one is a bit sweeter,” said Coach Mitchell. “By the time I won my first with Wyoming were on the brink of becoming a staple in the National Title picture; however this year with Iowa State we came out of nowhere and became college football’s Cinderella team…everybody loves a Cinderella story…well this one is mine.”

With so many starters returning for Iowa State and the potential for an above average recruiting class don’t be surprised if Iowa State is here to stay…the new USC maybe? Same colors and uniform you never know.”
