Iowa State drops 14 passes in 19-point loss to reigning National Champs

Ames, IA- Nobody really expected the Cyclones to compete with the reigning Big 12 and national Champions Saturday night, but for a while Iowa State gave the Aggies all they could handle.

Maybe Iowa State’s 19-point loss could rest solely on the shoulders of true freshman QB Jack Boley who threw 4 interceptions, OR…maybe, just maybe the problem had nothing to do with Boley at all but rather Iowa State’s 14 dropped passes. Boley attempted a pass to 6 different players and all but Mario Stukes dropped two or more, three resulting in Boley interceptions.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Coach Mitchell. “The most I’ve ever seen was 11 when I was at Kentucky against Alabama in the hostel crowd of Bryant Denny. Once we surpassed double digit drops I could do nothing else but laugh and shake my head. But in the infamous words of ex-Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green, “They are who we thought they were! And we let 'em off the hook! They didn’t beat us…no, no, no, we beat ourselves!”

Iowa State’s defense was victimized by week three’s leading Heisman candidate QB Willie Skinner, who passed for 301 yards on 23 attempts and 3 touchdowns.

After giving up 131 yards on the ground against Oklahoma State a week prior, the Cyclones D suffocated leading Heisman candidate senior HB Craig Davis, who only gained 57 yards on 20 carries for an average carry of 2.8 yards.

Texas A&M’s All-American cornerback Jamal Thomas was a recipient of two of Iowa State’s dropped passes resulting in picks, he also had 3 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, and 1 deflection which earned him Big 12 defensive player of the week honors.

Iowa State now has to head to the rarefied air of Boulder, Colorado where they’ll take on the Colorado Buffaloes who are coming off a lopsided 38-point victory against Iowa State’s week 4 opponent the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

The Buffaloes have the 11th ranked pass offense which averages over 300 yards per game while Iowa State has the 116th ranked pass defense giving up over 250 yards per game so this could prove to be a very tough task for the Cyclones, who might be looking at their fourth loss in six games.

THE CARDIAC KIDS
Coach Mitchell and Iowa State were at it again, this time pulling off the shocker in Boulder.

Boulder, CO- Greatest games and come from behind wins are becoming second nature for Coach Mitchell and the Iowa State Cyclones, racking up four in six games while posting a 3-1 record during that span.

“It’s truly amazing how resilient these kids are,” said Coach Mitchell. “They truly never quit and for that I couldn’t be more proud. Being a heavy underdog in every game we suit up for is insulting to them and they have a humongous chip on their shoulder and they use that as motivation when they’re out on the field.”

Iowa State earned their third victory of 2014 thanks to two monstrous interceptions by OLB Danny Montgomery and SS Dwayne Washington.

Montgomery’s pick with 4:47 left in the fourth quarter lead to Iowa State’s first lead and eventual game winning touchdown by QB Jack Boley, who scored the game winner in dramatic fashion with 1:55 left in the fourth on 4th and goal from the 1 ½ -yard line. Boley, who finished the game rushing for 48 yards on 13 carries buried his head and plowed his way into the end-zone giving Iowa State the 37-34 lead.

Giving up two return touchdowns already, Iowa State’s Joe Jones angled the kick to ensure that Greg Jackson or Ross Rossner didn’t have the proper angles to return a third to the house.

With three timeouts left in Colorado’s arsenal it was imperative for Iowa State’s defense to slow down the Buffaloes 11th ranked passing attack, unfortunately for Iowa State their defense wasn’t up to the task allowing the Buffaloes to drive practically the length of the field with relative ease. With 37 seconds left and the ball on the Iowa State 7-yard line Iowa State’s Dwayne Washington jumped a fade route in the back of the end-zone on a pass intended for Greg Jackson which sent the Iowa State sideline into pandemonium and preserved the Cyclones come from behind 37-34 victory.

“It was like déjà vu,” said Coach Mitchell. “It was the identical play and passing route Nate Reese jumped to preserve our 1-point victory to beat Oklahoma State, this was in the end-zone and Nate’s was on the five but it was eerie how similar they were.”

How Iowa State pounded out 126 yards on the ground with Colorado’s impact All-American OLB Richard Jackson filling the lanes is beyond me, Jackson looked to be in on every tackle tallying 15 on the afternoon.

“He was everywhere,” said Iowa State freshman QB Jack Boley. “Whether we were trying to run or pass he was there, waiting to make the tackle or knock down the pass, I sure won’t miss seeing him the rest of this season.”

The Cyclones are surprisingly sitting at 2-1 in the conference and are in a seven way tie for the number 2 spot, with 3-3, (0-3) Baylor next on their schedule they should be looking at their third conference win of 2014 which would put them 2 wins shy of their goal of going bowling at seasons end.

Iowa State inched closer to ultimate goal of go bowling with 27-0 shutout of the hapless Bears in Waco

Waco, TX- Not much has gone right for the Baylor Bears since jumping out to an early 3-0 start to open the season. Since their fast start the Bears have watched four-straight teams including Iowa State run them right into the ground with the biggest margin of defeat coming by way of a 43-point thrashing at the hands of then No. 7 Texas in week 5.

In Baylor’s four-straight losses they have been outscored 148 to 33.

Iowa State’s 27-0 shutout of the Bears marks the first time the Cyclones defense has posted a shutout against any FBS opponent, formally known as 1a, since they did it against this very same school in 2001, beating Baylor that day 45-0. That year Iowa State went onto finish the regular season 7-4 which earned them a trip to Shreveport, Louisiana where they played in the MainStay Independence Bowl, could we see a similar record this year?

Baylor’s offense struggled behind the decision making of red-shirt junior QB Pat Arnold who passed for only 77 yards on 14 attempts.

Arnold was filling in for an injured Kenneth Baker who went down with a strained shoulder against Missouri in week 6.

Prior to his injury Baker passed for 1,363 yards and 13 touchdowns on 138 attempts, trainers at Baylor say Baker should be reinserted back into the line-up in about two weeks or so.

Iowa State (4-3, 3-1) relied on the running game of three key players, QB Jack Boley, HB Mario Stukes, and HB Perry Booker. The three players combined to rack up 192 yards on 44 carries and scored 2 touchdowns.

It took Baylor (3-4, 0-4) nearly three full quarters to pass the 50-yard line for the first time against the stout defense of Iowa State, Baylor finally found themselves inside Cyclone territory with 47 seconds left in the third quarter with their greatest scoring opportunity coming on the same drive, however that was not to be after HB David Maxwell failed to convert a fourth down on 4th and 1 from the 7-yard line after SS Dwayne Washington busted through the line to suffocate Maxwell in the backfield.

Iowa State will look to extend their two-game winning streak next week when they take on the 2-4, 0-4 Kansas Jayhawks at home at 8:00 pm EST.

Iowa State drops to 1-3 at home after 10-point loss to Kansas

Ames, IA- It was a game more about what Iowa State couldn’t do rather than what Kansas could do.

“We couldn’t hang on to the ball, we couldn’t tackle, we couldn’t run the proper routes, we couldn’t cover kicks, we couldn’t stop shooting ourselves in the foot with dumb penalties, hell there wasn’t much we could do right tonight,” said Coach Mitchell. “It’s frustrating watching the fundamentals breakdown time and time again, I don’t know why it’s so difficult for our guys to play smart when we’re at home but it NEEDS to change and quick! We still have Nebraska and a very, very good Missouri team coming in here and if we can’t defend our home field then we can kiss our bowl hopes goodbye, I guarantee that! We made the same mistakes over and over again that we made against North Carolina State and Texas A&M, it’s like our guys only get up when we’re on the road, maybe they’re more focused when we’re in hostile territory, I don’t know but damn is it frustrating.”

Maybe the biggest factor in Iowa State’s 10-point loss was their 4 penalties for 40 yards. All four came on converted third down plays, consequently forcing the Cyclones into third and long yardage which they were unable to convert a second time.

The most significant of the Cyclones four penalties came with 1:47 left in the fourth quarter down by 3 points and facing a 3rd and 8 from the Iowa State 44-yard line, after gaining 16 yards on a screen pass to Alex Montgomery which resulted in a first down the play was negated thanks to an Eddie Lewis hold of Marcus Stanberry consequently forcing Iowa State out of field goal range and into a third and long situation. The extra yardage Iowa State needed to get for the first down and into field goal range proved to be too much as they were forced to go for it on 4th and 7 from the Kansas 46-yard line, a 5-yard gain by Mario Stukes on a halfback screen wasn’t enough to move the chains giving the ball back to Kansas and dashing Iowa State’s hope of pulling out the W.

The offenses weren’t very sharp but the kick return games were and more specifically Kansas’s Wayne Lumpkin and Iowa State’s Alex Montgomery who traded return touchdowns in the second quarter.

Lumpkin returned 4 kicks for 188 yards and 1 touchdown with an average return 47 yards.

On the other side Montgomery returned 2 kicks for 122 yards with an average return of 61 yards and 1 touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball Kansas’s MLB Matt Norwood and Iowa State’s DT Ryan White wrecked havoc on the opposing team.

Norwood tallied 10 tackles and both of Kansas’s 2 interceptions, both team highs.

White racked up 2 of Iowa State’s 3 sacks, had 7 tackles and 2 tackles of a loss.

Next week’s game against Nebraska is for all intensive purposes a must win game of Iowa State, a loss could prove disastrous to their post-season hopes.

Cyclones now just 1-win shy of bowl eligibility

Ames, IA- Not many times does a gimmick like uniform choice play a factor in whether a team wins or loses but when Iowa State took the field at Jack Trice Stadium on a blustery Saturday afternoon in their road whites maybe it did.

Needing two wins in their final four games and two very good teams coming up in Kansas State and No. 18 Missouri, Iowa State and coach Mitchell knew they had to do something different if they stood a shot at beating Nebraska which would potentially set them up with a chance to clinch a bowl bid in Minneapolis on November 29th against 2-8 Minnesota -- if they were to lose against Kansas State and Missouri in their next two games.

“Who knows if it had anything to do with what color uniforms we had on, I hope not, but I knew we were 1-3 in our home reds and 3-1 in our road whites so I figured why not, it can’t hurt,” said coach Mitchell. “Whatever it was it got us one win shy of becoming bowl eligible which is huge for this program, they really deserve a post-season birth after being dreadful and at the bottom of the food chain in the big 12 for so long.”

Iowa State was once again lead by the power running game of second-string turned first-string tailback Mario Stukes, who rushed for 179 yards on 27 carries and found the endzone a career high 3 times.

However the real heroes of Iowa State’s 31-21 victory over Nebraska were FS Nate Reese and CB Dennis Harvey, who combined to pickoff two Gabe Foster passes, knockdown 4 and tally 8 tackles -- both interceptions came with Nebraska inside the Iowa State 30-yard line potentially leading to go ahead scores.

Overshadowed by the performance of Mario Stukes was red-shirt freshman FB Kyle Washington who really showed that he can do more than just block, rushing for 56 yards on 10 carries.

“I was really impressed with Kyle (Washington), I wasn’t aware he was capable of running the ball like he did, when we were trying to run out the clock up by 3 prior to Stukes 19-yard TD run he really carried this team on his back and allowed us to burn up more clock,” said Coach Mitchell. “I believe he converted three third-down plays in that final drive which was instrumental in our 10-point victory. I think we now need to look closely at incorporating him into our running game more; a fullback that can run could be very helpful to a run heavy offense.”

The Cyclones are off next week but will be back at it on November 15th when they’ll travel to Manhattan, Kansas where they’ll take on a pass happy Kansas State team reeling a bit after getting dismantled by Missouri this week 34-9.
