Mark Johnson Injury | Kyle Golden knocking through his 4th FG | HB Mario Stukes

    CYCLONIC HEARTBREAK
Iowa State losses rivalry game in heartbreaking fashion, 22-19

IOWA CITY, IA- Red-shirt sophomore cornerback Dennis Harvey was once again a step slower off the line and was beat by wide receiver Darryll Johnson consequently resulting in a 36-yard gain on 4th and 8 setting the Hawkeyes up on the Cyclone 1-yard line down by four points with 47 seconds left to play.

Harvey has already allowed 5 touchdowns this season and has been burned by the opposition numerous other times which sparked this comment by Coach Mitchell after the game, “If he doesn’t start locking down his man and start being more aware of his assignment then he’s going to find himself on the bench, we need players that are going to do their jobs out there.”

After the Hawkeyes burned their final timeout quarterback Nate Henry took a QB sneak up the middle for the go ahead touchdown putting the Hawkeyes up by 3 points at 22-19, leaving true freshman quarterback Jack Boley and the rest of the Iowa State Cylones offense just 29 seconds left to operate after a 27-yard kickoff return by Alex Montgomery.

Armed with just one timeout Jack Boley made the best decisions possible to get the Cyclones close enough to attempt a Kyle Golden game-tying field goal, unfortunately of Iowa State three inbound stops by Iowa’s defense left Iowa State out of timeouts and out time on the clock as Iowa State suffered a heart wrenching 3-point loss to their hated rivals to the east.

More devastating than Iowa State’s narrow loss to the arch rivals was the loss of their all every thing tailback Mark Johnson, Johnson went down just two plays into the game after he was snot bubbled by #98 Adrian Hughes, the injury will sideline Johnson for the remainder of the season, unless Iowa State somehow goes bowling.

“The loss of Johnson is without a doubt a huge blow to this team, he was just as important in the passing game as he was in the running game,” said Coach Mitchell. “He’s going to be missed greatly but we can’t allow his injury to effect this team negatively as a whole, we’ll plug someone else in there that can carry the load in the wake of Johnson’s injury, we have no other choice.”

That duty looks to fall on the broad shoulders of 6’2, 228 pound Mario Stukes who will need to step up huge if Iowa State wants to keep their season’s goals intact.

During the bye week Coach Mitchell stated he will look to implement the spread offense, usually a change in offensive philosophy is a bad idea just three games into the season and usually spells doom for the brave soul that chooses to do it but Coach Mitchell feels as though he has no other choice.

“We need to utilize what little talent we do have and get the most out of each and every player, I’ve changed to the spread this early into the season before when I was at Wyoming and found success and I’m willing to throw caution into the wind and attempt it again,” said Coach Mitchell. “It’s not our lack of discipline or lack of execution that has offense so inept but the lack of utilizing the talent we have on this team, it’s my job to put our players in the best possible positions to be successful and right now I’m just not getting the job done, I don’t want to necessarily say we’ll never go back to the pro style offense but right now it’s just not the best fit for our players. If I was to keep things the way they are right now we may not win another game, we still might not, but I look at the schedule and there’s just no way we can keep things the way they are right now and win. Hopefully if I can open things up a bit we scratch out a couple more wins.”

It was such a tough one to swallow, just didn't have enough to hold them off in the end.

Too bad, you left the 'Cats. Good luck in Iowa, the Cyclones are a very fun team to build up. I'm in year 3 with them and I've only had 1 bowl appearance, but have had 2 solid recruiting classes.

I really thought my D was going to hold them out of the end zone but unfortunately it was not to be.

CB Nate Reese Game Changing INT | QB Jack Boley celebrating on TD pass in 1st | TE Robert Heard celebrates Davis's GM winning TD

                  ANOTHER CLASSIC
Iowa State and Coach Mitchell tally yet another classic in 1-point victory

Stillwater, OK- They may not have the talent to compete with the more skillful teams in the Big 12 yet but one thing is already quite evident with this years Iowa State team that’s different from years past, they never quit, no matter what the odds, the score, or the talent level on the other team, they refuse to give up, which is a testament to newly hired head coach Garrett Mitchell.

After out gaining Oklahoma State in the first half 202 yards to 166 yards, Iowa State’s newly implemented spread offense was shutdown by the Cowboys defense and held to only 94 more yards throughout the second half.

If not for a colossal mistake by QB Logan Roberson with 4:09 left in the game that stat would have played dividends.

With the Cowboys up by 5 points with just over 5:30 left in the fourth quarter, senior QB Logan Roberson and the Cowboys were driving to deliver the knockout punch on the battered and bruised Cyclones, who had nothing more to rely on but a little hope and a prayer. Fortunately for the Cyclones that prayer was miraculously answered on the Cyclone 5-yard line when CB Nate Reese jumped an out route in the corner of the endzone on a pass intended for Roberson’s favorite target WR Marty Parker and returned 37 yards to the Oklahoma State 42-yard line, shifting the momentum to the Cyclones offense.

With how stout the Cowboys D was playing it definitely wasn’t a five star lock that even with 4:09 left and a full allotment of timeouts left that the Cyclones were going to score.

Eight plays and 3:56 seconds after CB Nate Reese’s interception the Cyclones second-string QB Terrell Davis, who was filling for an injured Jack Boley who went down one play prior with a strained bicep, lowered his head and pushed his was across the goal line giving Iowa State the improbable 29-28 lead and eventual win cementing Iowa State’s first conference win of 2014.

“This was one of those wins that you’ll look back on one day and say, that game against Oklahoma State really gave Iowa State a new sense of confidence and got them pointed in the right direction.” said Coach Mitchell. “I can’t say enough for how this team battles week in and week out, the fact that this was our third greatest game of the year and we’ve only played four validates that point.”

Logan Roberson has thrown 2 or more interceptions in each of Oklahoma State’s four losses and leads the Big 12 conference in picks with 9.

Iowa State will need to use all of their new found confidence next week when they take on the No. 1 Texas A&M Aggies in Ames or it could get ugly for the Cyclones rather quickly as the Aggies are 6th in the nation in scoring, scoring just over 42.5 points per game.

Woah, The Aggies are Number 1? I guess they were finally able to turn it around.

What's happening in Kentucky is really too bad, after all the great things you did, but oh well. Great win! Very exciting game I take it. Very, very good luck next week, you most certainly will need it this time!

Yeah, they've already won a National Championship (2013) and a gunnin' for another this year.

I thought they would sustain the level of success for AT LEAST one more year but I guess not.

                            IT was, hard fought too.
