Mark Johnson Injury | Kyle Golden knocking through his 4th FG | HB Mario Stukes
Iowa State losses rivalry game in heartbreaking fashion, 22-19
IOWA CITY, IA- Red-shirt sophomore cornerback Dennis Harvey was once again a step slower off the line and was beat by wide receiver Darryll Johnson consequently resulting in a 36-yard gain on 4th and 8 setting the Hawkeyes up on the Cyclone 1-yard line down by four points with 47 seconds left to play.
Harvey has already allowed 5 touchdowns this season and has been burned by the opposition numerous other times which sparked this comment by Coach Mitchell after the game, “If he doesn’t start locking down his man and start being more aware of his assignment then he’s going to find himself on the bench, we need players that are going to do their jobs out there.”
After the Hawkeyes burned their final timeout quarterback Nate Henry took a QB sneak up the middle for the go ahead touchdown putting the Hawkeyes up by 3 points at 22-19, leaving true freshman quarterback Jack Boley and the rest of the Iowa State Cylones offense just 29 seconds left to operate after a 27-yard kickoff return by Alex Montgomery.
Armed with just one timeout Jack Boley made the best decisions possible to get the Cyclones close enough to attempt a Kyle Golden game-tying field goal, unfortunately of Iowa State three inbound stops by Iowa’s defense left Iowa State out of timeouts and out time on the clock as Iowa State suffered a heart wrenching 3-point loss to their hated rivals to the east.
More devastating than Iowa State’s narrow loss to the arch rivals was the loss of their all every thing tailback Mark Johnson, Johnson went down just two plays into the game after he was snot bubbled by #98 Adrian Hughes, the injury will sideline Johnson for the remainder of the season, unless Iowa State somehow goes bowling.
“The loss of Johnson is without a doubt a huge blow to this team, he was just as important in the passing game as he was in the running game,” said Coach Mitchell. “He’s going to be missed greatly but we can’t allow his injury to effect this team negatively as a whole, we’ll plug someone else in there that can carry the load in the wake of Johnson’s injury, we have no other choice.”
That duty looks to fall on the broad shoulders of 6’2, 228 pound Mario Stukes who will need to step up huge if Iowa State wants to keep their season’s goals intact.
During the bye week Coach Mitchell stated he will look to implement the spread offense, usually a change in offensive philosophy is a bad idea just three games into the season and usually spells doom for the brave soul that chooses to do it but Coach Mitchell feels as though he has no other choice.
“We need to utilize what little talent we do have and get the most out of each and every player, I’ve changed to the spread this early into the season before when I was at Wyoming and found success and I’m willing to throw caution into the wind and attempt it again,” said Coach Mitchell. “It’s not our lack of discipline or lack of execution that has offense so inept but the lack of utilizing the talent we have on this team, it’s my job to put our players in the best possible positions to be successful and right now I’m just not getting the job done, I don’t want to necessarily say we’ll never go back to the pro style offense but right now it’s just not the best fit for our players. If I was to keep things the way they are right now we may not win another game, we still might not, but I look at the schedule and there’s just no way we can keep things the way they are right now and win. Hopefully if I can open things up a bit we scratch out a couple more wins.”
