WR Andrew Ernst | QB Sean Anderson | WR Alex Montgomery 93-yd kickoff ret.

                  FIRST OF MANY?
An overtime thriller gets Coach Mitchell victory number one at Iowa State

Ames, IA- “We aint in ‘Kentucky’ anymore toto,” said Coach Mitchell after the game jokingly.

Iowa State’s 207 yards of total offense is a far cry from the 442 yards a game Coach Mitchell is accustomed to seeing out of his offenses when he was at Kentucky.

Senior tailback Mark Johnson rushed for 76 yards on 22 carries and scored the Cyclones game winning touchdown in overtime to make Coach Mitchell’s debut a successful one, winning 23-20.

Colorado State’s Andrew Ernst was the Rams lone game breaker coming into the game and he showed us exactly why, catching 5 passes for 114 yards and scoring both of the Rams touchdowns, his 75-yard breakaway catch in the second-quarter put the Rams on top at the half 7-6.

“We didn’t have anyone that could match-up with him as far as size and speed,” said Coach Mitchell. “Coming into tonight we were worried that they were going to exploit our defense with Andrew (Ernst) but there was really wasn’t much we could do, we didn’t have the personal to match up with him. We elected to play a lot of zone rather than man but unfortunately that still didn’t do enough.”

Ram quarterback Sean Anderson picked apart the weak pass defense of the Cyclones passing for 233 yards on 22 pass attempts and tossed two touchdowns to Ernst, a 75-yard bomb and a 1-yard slant in the fourth quarter, which at the time put the Rams on top 17-14 with 4:27 left to play.

Iowa State’s saving grace all night long was junior kicker Kyle Golden, who booted through 3 field goals on the night, a 30 yarder, a 29 yarder and a 40 yarder – which tied the game up at 17 with 1:38 left to play.

After Colorado State was unable to get a first down on three-straight plays in overtime they sent out sophomore kicker Bret Williams to attempt a 34-yard field goal, a Cyclone time-out to ice Williams proved to rattle him but not paralyze him as Williams barely knocked it through hitting the left upright on the way in giving the Rams a 3-point lead, 20-17.

Iowa State’s dedication to the run in overtime proved to be money as 5-straight running plays by the Cyclones produced a Mark Johnson 2-yard touchdown run giving the Cyclones their first victory of 2014.

“I can’t say enough about these guys,” said Coach Mitchell. “They’ve bought in to what we’re trying to do here and executed it to the best of their abilities. These types of hard fought victories can really bring a team together and be a springboard for the rest of the season.”

Nothing like starting my tenure off a Iowa State with a back and fourth slug fest ending in overtime huh?

                        Thanks!

WR Matt McClover | Strip of Mark Johnson | QB Marcus Hayden

                          HONEYMOONS OVER
Iowa State smacked by Wolfpack 56-38 in offensive showcase

Ames, IA- True freshman quarterback Jack Boley threw two pick sixes and Mark Johnson was striped on a screen pass late in the third quarter by right end J.R. Hill as North Carolina State turned three Cyclone turnovers into 21 points and an 18-point victory Saturday afternoon in Ames.

Jack Boley completed 66 percent of his passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns.

Just as wide receiver Andrew Ernst and quarterback Sean Anderson of Colorado State dissected the Cyclones vanilla pass defense last week, Marcus Hayden and Matt McClover decided to follow suit, hooking up 7 times for 146 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Iowa State’s hope wagon was still rolling, all be it on three wheels, up until Johnson was stripped on the 32-yard line on Iowa State’s first possession of the second half as the Cyclones were ready to punch it in to narrow the gap to 35-31. The Wolfpack took advantage of Iowa State’s misfortune seven plays later when Cameron Wolfe took an inside draw 2 yards to put the Wolfpack on top 42-24, all but squashing Iowa State’s hope of a 2-0 start.

Iowa State’s Mark Johnson played eerily similar to Coach Mitchell’s man crush, recent Kentucky graduate Brandon Powell, not as a rusher but as an all-purpose threat, totaling 333 all-purpose yards and scoring 4 touchdowns. To put Johnson’s performance into perspective he accounted for almost 50 percent of Iowa State’s 683 total yards and scored 4 of the Cyclones 5 total touchdowns.

“He’s a good one,” said Coach Mitchell. “On a team with not very many playmakers we need to make sure he touches the ball a lot if we want a chance of achieving our goal of playing 13.”

At 6’1, 224 pounds Johnson is great inside runner who can put his head down and run over tacklers but his 90 rated speed and 93 rated acceleration is what really makes him a legit threat not only in the running game but also in the passing game.
