TE Lamar Johnson, taunting K-ST crowd | Boley & Temple chest bump after GW td | WR Alex Montgomery (5rec, 135 yds, 2 td)

          A DREAM REALIZED
Iowa State captures sixth win in dramatic fashion.

Manhattan, KS- If not for the deep pockets of some prominent Iowa State boosters and some outstanding sales pitches by Athletic Director Jamie Pollard then bringing in Coach Mitchell would have been nothing more than a pipe dream.

When Coach Mitchell took over at Iowa State prior to this season the expectations were lofty with the lack of talent on the roster but not out of the realm of possibilities, especially not for Coach Mitchell.

          The expectations…play 13.

When Iowa State opened the season 2-3 with the bulk of the Big 12 schedule still ahead of them and their top playmaker out for the season in Mark Johnson, the Cyclones enthusiasm for reaching that goal slowly started to diminish, players got down and fans started to lose hope, but not Coach Mitchell, not back-up tailback Mario Stukes.

“Coach Mitchell told me from the get go after Mark (Johnson) went down against Iowa that I was going to be the guy that needed to lead this team,” said Stukes. “He told me that the team would go as I go, if I started to lose confidence in what we’re trying to accomplish then the whole team would start lose confidence in what we’re trying to accomplish.”

“This team really bought into the type of offensive and defensive philosophy we were trying to implement, when you change as many things as we did you need every player to be on board, if one person isn’t it can wreck a whole team,” said Coach Mitchell. “I told them from day one we were going to make a bowl game if they worked hard and gave everything they had to this team and that’s exactly what they did and now they get to play in a thirteenth game and reap the benefits of going to a bowl game, I couldn’t be happier for them.”

The all important sixth win wouldn’t have taken place in Manhattan if not for an Andrea Lamb missed extra point with 4:09 remaining which gave Kansas State a 6-point lead rather than a 7-point lead, forcing the Wildcats defense to hold Iowa State out of the end-zone.

After a Corey Webb 50-yard kickoff return on the ensuing kickoff, Jack Boley and the Cyclones used the power running game of HB Mario Stukes and FB Kyle Washington to march down the field.

An 11-play, 48-yard drive which chewed up nearly four minutes off the clock came down to a 3rd and goal from the 2-yard with under 20 seconds to play. After some discussion by Coach Mitchell and the offense during Iowa State’s third and final timeout they decided that they would once again roll the dice with true freshman QB Jack Boley and see if he can’t win his third-game in the final seconds with his legs. A stacked defensive line would’ve forced another Iowa State timeout unfortunately the Cyclones didn’t have any, with the play clock at 5 seconds Boley took the ball from center and plowed his way through the right side of the line and into the end-zone silencing the Kansas State faithful and sending Iowa State’s players and bench into pandemonium.

The 1-point victory marks Iowa State’s second 1-point victory this season and third decided by 3 points or less.

“The real difference in this game was our bend but don’t break defense, our running game and the injury to Kansas State QB Jonathan Mitchell in the first quarter which kept him on the sidelines until the start of the second half,” said Coach Mitchell. “Their offense was like night and day when Mitchell was out, I think my stomach would’ve liked him to stay on the bench for the remainder of the game but a little Pepcid AC afterwards did the trick.”

Jonathan Mitchell’s back-up, red-shirt senior Jason Reynolds was efficient completing 8-of-10 passes on the evening but he only passed for 76 yards and a TD, whereas Mitchell completed 9-of-13 pass for 174 yards and 3 touchdowns – both quarterbacks played two quarters. Mitchell’s favorite target was impact senior WR Bruce Ervin, who tallied 4 receptions for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns.

With most of the pressure off of them Iowa State now has to take on the No. 18 Missouri Tigers who are 9-1 on the season and have the 5th rated Heisman candidate under center in QB Cory Moss, who will look to extend Missouri’s winning streak over the Cyclones to 8 games.

No, he just pushed it to the left and missed the upright by about 8 inches. lol
As soon as he missed it I thought to myself, it's over I'm going to win this game 35-34 and that's exactly what happened. I was shocked though to see him miss it, however it wasn't the first time I've seen that and I'm sure it wont be the last.

I can't believe that's even a possibility...that's due to being in the weak North.

                    AND THE STREAK CONTINUES
No. 18 Missouri extends winning streak over rival Iowa State to 8 games.

Ames, IA- It might not have been the way Iowa State (6-5, 5-3) wanted to finish out the home half of their 2014 schedule but their 35-21 loss to rival Missouri wasn’t a shock to anybody, especially Coach Mitchell.

“I knew Missouri was going to be a handful from the moment I stepped into the roll of a Big 12 head coach,” said Coach Mitchell. “It doesn’t help they’re our rival, rivalry games are always tough to win.”

Iowa State’s usually reliable running game was stifled by Missouri’s 14th ranked rush defense as the Cyclones only gained 79 yards on 24 carries. However it did manage to produce all 21 of Iowa State points.

The Cyclones came into Saturday averaging 143.3 yards per game but the drop off in production against Missouri (10-1, 7-1) could mostly be attributed to the injury of Iowa State’s work horse tailback Mario Stukes who missed two quarters with a stinger after being lit up by junior OLB Dustin Roberts mid-way through the second quarter.

With the absence of Stukes in the backfield Iowa State was forced to go to the air which isn’t exactly their forte, throwing four picks between two quarterbacks, 3 by Jack Boley, 1 by Terrell Davis.

True freshman quarterback Jack Boley was pulled by Coach Mitchell with 2 minutes left in the third quarter. Boley now has a touchdown to interception ratio of 9-to-13.

Senior QB Cory Moss passed for 241 yards on 24 attempts and a touchdown -- he also rushed for two more.

Iowa State will now go on the road where they’ll face the 2-9 Minnesota Golden Gophers in the toasty confines of the MetroDome. The Cyclones will be looking to get their seventh win of the season.

                            GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY MISSED
Iowa State stunned after 34-point beat down by 2-9 Gophers.

Minneapolis, MN- Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, the turnover bug once again plagued the Iowa State Cyclones Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis against the woeful Golden Gophers as they suffer their worst defeat of the 2014 season.

Iowa State (6-6, 5-3) looked lethargic, slow and completely uninspired…did anybody happen to mention prior to kickoff that a bowl birth wasn’t guaranteed to a 6-6 team? Probably not by the performance and effort they showed in their 34-point beat down by the Gophers.

It’s no surprise that Iowa State’s 3 turnovers lead to their demise, their recent history can tell us that much, when the Cyclones turned the ball over one of fewer times this season they were 5-1, when they turned the ball over 3 or more times they were 0-5, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that turnovers were the number one culprit in their .500 record.

“We struggled greatly in a game we were favored heavily to win…that’s on me,” said Coach Mitchell. “The lack of effort, intensity and passion could only be attributed to one thing…we were overconfident, overconfident in our abilities, overconfident in our team, overconfident we had the W without even playing the game, when you go into a game with a mindset like that you lose…after the Kansas game we should’ve already known that and yet we let it happen again.”

Minnesota (3-9, 0-8) looked like a machine on offense and defense, as sophomore QB Mark Smith completed 82 percent of his passes for 286 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Gophers 99th ranked defense sure didn’t reflect that ranking as they held the Cyclones to their lowest offensive output of the season, just 177 yards.

The QB position for the Cyclones continued to be problem as three quarterbacks got a shot under center and not one looked like anything special.

First string QB Jack Boley completed just 6-of-12 pass for 51 yards and tossed 2 interceptions.

Second string QB Terrell Davis got the hook after just 3 passing attempts, completing only one for 5 yards and a pick.

Third String QB Luke Day didn’t even last a series as he was sacked both times he took the snap from center thanks to his less than impressive 56 rated speed.

All Iowa State can do now is pray that a bowl committee somewhere will take a chance on the Cyclones and select them to participate in their bowl game. The only bowls that have shown interest in the Cyclones as of late are the PapaJohns.com Bowl, the Poinsettia Bowl and the Texas Bowl but with six 6-6 teams out there vying for an invite Iowa State’s 34-point loss to a beleaguered 3-9 Minnesota team doesn’t help their cause.
