TEXAS SIZED SNUB!
Texas Bowl selects Hawaii to fill Big 12 slot, leaves Iowa State in shock.

Ames, IA- Iowa State and Coach Mitchell got word late last night that Texas Bowl officials had chosen Hawaii to fill Big 12 slot rather than Iowa State.

Iowa State 6-6, 5-3 and positioned 5th in the Big 12 conference find themselves celebrating the holidays at home rather than at a bowl site.

“How do we go 5-3 in arguably one of the toughest conferences in the nation and not get selected to a bowl game? This team has fought tooth and nail to position themselves well inside the bowl pecking order and we get passed up by Kansas State and Colorado…two teams which we beat,” said Coach Mitchell! “We finished 5th in the conference, we had one really bad game all year which happened to be the last game of the season and we get penalized this heavily for it. I would say to all those bowl committee members out there, you messed up and you’ve robbed our seniors, who haven’t gone to a single bowl game since being at Iowa State, of an opportunity to reap the benefits of their hard work and dedication throughout the year.”

Iowa State was also passed up by the Poinsettia Bowl which elected to go with Kent State, the PapaJohns.com Bowl which selected 6-6 Akron, the Insight which snagged Colorado, the Alamo which chose Kansas State and the PetroSun Independence Bowl which decided to take 6-6 Temple.

The frustration behind Coach Mitchell’s rant can mainly be attributed to his contract dispute with AD Jamie Pollard.

Prior to Coach Mitchell’s arrival to Ames he was under the influence that he would be signing a contract that would allow him to have a 3-year time period to meet his agreed upon goals; have a winning season and get a bowl birth, however after further findings it has come to Coach Mitchell’s attention the he really signed a 2-year contract which would mean it’s seven wins next year and a bowl birth or good riddance.

This is all due to the fact that he signed the contract prior to the 2013 season being finalized, so he could get an early start on off-season recruiting, consequently he lost a year of his contract which makes it look as if he never coached during the 2013 season at all, not with Kentucky, not with Iowa State. Needless to say he thought his stress level was high this year just wait until next year.

Re: Look Who the Winds Blew In: An Iowa State Cyclones Dynasty

THE MAGNETIC PULL OF COACH MITCHELL
Now ex-Kentucky WR and ex-Louisville HB top 2014 transfer requests.

Ames, IA- Only once in Coach Mitchell’s entire coaching career has he ever had a player transfer to his school and not from his school, even then it was only one player, this year however he not only received one but he received five.

The most notable of names is one of Coach Mitchell’s most sought after blue chip prospect during the 2011 season, WR George Bernard.

Bernard was the 6th ranked wide receiver out of Adamsville, Alabama during the 2011 off-season and chose Kentucky over Alabama and Auburn. The departure or Coach Mitchell prior to this past season was an epic blow to the career of Bernard after Coach Mitchell had promised him the world then left the school for greener pastures in Ames.

“During the recruiting process I knew Coach Mitchell was the coach I wanted to play for, I wanted to play for him more than I wanted to play for Kentucky,” Bernard said. “After he left to pursue a greater calling at Iowa State I knew the 2014 season was going to be my last at Kentucky and I was going to do everything in my power to play for Coach Mitchell again.”

Bernard’s SEC type speed which is rated at 91 should really add another dimension to the less than average passing game of the Cyclones; his 86 catch rating is only 2 points lower than Iowa State’s best receiver SR Alex Montgomery, who will be graduating after the 2015 season making Bernard the number one guy at that position next year when he’s eligible to play.

“All these transfers plus the recruiting class we have coming in this year gives me tremendous optimism for the direction of this program,” Mitchell said. “Big 12 beware. All we need now is a Brandon Powell like tailback and we’re going to be scary good, add that to the fact that we play in the North division of the Big 12…success will come in a hurry.”

Overshadowed a bit but definitely not lost in the mix is Louisville transfer HB Mark Miller, Miller oddly enough left Louisville to join forces with a Coach that brought so much misery to the Cardinals over the past 5 years. Miller’s 94 rated speed is what has Coach Mitchell drooling.

“Depending on what tailbacks we can find during in-season recruiting this year Miller will be the fastest tailbacks we have on the roster when he’s eligible to play next season,” Mitchell said. “That can really help this team with the style of offense we run.”

How Iowa State could even think about getting rid of Coach Mitchell regardless of how this upcoming season goes after the progress he has already made in this program is just mind boggling.

Hidden Gem

Ames, IA- Coach Mitchell might have only brought in 10 prospects total to Ames but the fact that two of them were Rivals.com 150 prospects and two of them were rated one or two at their particular position is what really should be focused upon rather than the depth of the class.

The Cyclones went into the off-season needing to sign only a punter with the departure of Joe Jones after the 2014 season so the addition of six more positions is actually a bonus since finding kids that want to play here is easier said than done.

“We may not have the pure numbers like other schools but when you compare our two Rivals.com Top 150 prospects and two prospects rated one or two at their respective positions we should be rated within the top 35 but I don’t worry about that,” Mitchell said. “I only worry about what a guy can do and what a guy can’t do all that other hoopla is for the media outlets.”

The recruiting period didn’t go without its share of drama filled moments as twice Coach Mitchell got a prospect to de-commit from a school he had previously given a soft verbal to, once with four-star prospect ATH William Holt and another with four-star prospect QB Brian Young. Holt was ripped away from the outstretched hands of Pete Carroll and USC while Young was persuaded to de-commit from UCLA, both huge football powers.

“I honestly don’t know how I did it,” said Coach Mitchell. “But at the last minute of the last week I was able to sell both recruits on Iowa State which will only boost this program to the heights we want to go. Both guys want to see how far this program can go after examining my career track record and the success that I’ve had where ever I go and the told me they wanted to be apart of this current rebuilding venture and lay the foundation for this programs future.”

Another player that should be examined closely throughout his career is DE Joe Williams, Williams is a 3-star prospect out of San Angelo, Texas that didn’t receive much interest from other schools however his number two rating at the defensive end position should have gotten him a ton…but somehow he flew under the radar and into the Cardinal and Gold uniform of the Cyclones.

“I have high hopes for Joe, I think he’s going to be a player you look back on in three to four years and say wow…how did no one pursue him as hard as we did,” said Mitchell. “I think he’s going to have an outstanding career for us.”

HB Mario Stukes Injury | HB Matt Carrie (27att,114yds,1td)

FB Mark Jennings (5att,20yds,2td) | FS William Holt (7tkl,1defl,4ret,130yds)

NOT AGAIN!
Iowa State suffers yet another critical blow to their running attack, 2nd time in two years.

Fort Collins, CO- It was Mark Johnson last year in Iowa State’s third-game of the season against rival Iowa and this year it was last years all-purpose yards leader Mario Stukes.

It happened on the second-play of the third quarter on Iowa State’s first possession of the second half when Mario was ripped down by 5’11”, 225 pound OLB Charles Sullivan, the result…a dislocated elbow that will look to sideline Stukes for 10 weeks.

“It’s yet another major blow to this team,” said Mitchell. “I would be lying to you if I said Mario (Stukes) wasn’t a major focal point in this offense and someone we designed the offense around this year. But what are we going to do, cry about it, the next guy in line is just going to have to step up for us like Mario did last year when Mark went down.”

Prior to his injury Mario Stukes had rushed for 78 yards on 14 carries and scored two first half touchdowns.

The man who injured Stukes red-shirt junior Charles Sullivan went on to lead the Rams in tackles and tackles for a loss against the Cyclones finishing the day with 8 and 2 respectively.

It looks as though a change in offensive philosophy is on the horizon yet again for Coach Mitchell and the Iowa State Cyclones as the new spread attack that was implemented 3 games into last year just hasn’t produced the type of passing numbers it was thought to.

“I think we need a run heavy scheme that will enable us to use multiple back sets and use the fullback as another tailback,” Coach Mitchell said. “We’re either not executing the spread properly or we don’t have the type of skill players that can run it properly, I’m not sure, but our passing game has progressively gotten worse not better.”

Jack Boley, now in his second full year under center attempted just 13 passes for 98 yards and zero touchdowns. He didn’t turn the ball over which is a credit to his decision making but 9 completions for 98 yards just isn’t going to cut it as teams are going to start stacking the box forcing the Cyclones to pass which isn’t the Cyclones strength as of right now.

True freshman FS William Holt sure made his mark on this team quickly, finishing the game just 1 tackle shy of the team lead with 7 and combined to return 4 kicks for 130 yards, giving him an average return of 32.5 yards every time he touched the rock.

“He looked polished out there hopefully he can continue to produce like he did today, we sure need him to,” said Mitchell. “I was impressed with Holt but the player that really opened my eyes was FB Mark Jennings who touched the ball only five times but gained 20 yards and scored two huge touchdowns for us late, I really want to see what he can do when he gets more touches.”

QB Nate Henry hit 6 times, sacked twice | FS William 'The Jolt' Holt (8tkl,2tfl,int,2defl,ret.td off missed FG)

BULLIED NO LONGER
Iowa State wins Cy-Hawk trophy with an impressive 18-point beat down of Iowa.

Ames, IA- It’s been nearly eight years since the Cyclones tasted victory against their arch rivals to the east. That all changed Saturday afternoon when the Cyclones smashed the Hawkeyes 35-17…and it wasn’t even that close.

Iowa State spotted the Hawkeyes three points early then went on a 35 to 7 terror which finally ended on a 4th down and 3 try from the Iowa 46-yard line mid-way through the fourth quarter which was stopped by OLB Matthew Sanders halting the Cyclones from making the score even more lopsided.

The reason for Iowa State’s success today was the absolutely outstanding play of one man, true freshman FS William ‘The Jolt’ Holt, who was recently dubbed ‘The Jolt’ by Coach Mitchell after Mitchell characterized William as, “The man that can ignite this team in a single play, whether offensively by setting up the offense with great field position, defensively by his total disregard for his body and his will to make a play, or special teams with his lighting quick speed burst that can instantly turn a routine kickoff or punt return into six in the blink of an eye.”

Holt finished the game with a team high 8 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, one interception, 2 deflections and one Eric Moore missed 55-yard field goal which he returned 99 yards to the house which was for all intensive purposes the nail in the preverbal coffin for the Hawkeyes who went down hill from the moment on.

“I can see why Pete Carroll and USC went after him so hard during his recruitment period, the guy is something else,” said Mitchell. “I’m just glad he decided to put on the cardinal helmet that has the Iowa State logo on it and not the cardinal helmet that has the Trojan on it.”

Iowa State’s defense lead by the before mentioned William ‘The Jolt’ Holt played excellent, if you discount the touchdown they gave up late to HB Zach Williams, who got in only because of the uninspired tackling of OLB Jovon Luke with the game well in hand. Other than that one mistake the Cyclones defense played well above their talent level holding the Hawkeyes to just 10 points and 192 total yards.

“I was blown away by how physical our defense was today,” said Coach Mitchell. “Guys were flying around lighting up chumps, smoking fools and knocking out suckers like they were they ones who were doing the bullying all these years and not Iowa. I know they wanted this win bad but I didn’t know they were going to show up like they did.”

Iowa State’s passing game continues to be suspect at best gaining and even 100 yards on 13 attempts but Boley did manage to toss two touchdowns and for the second week in a row he didn’t throw a single interception which was his achillies heel all last year, leading to the Cyclones 6-6 finish.
