Texas Bowl selects Hawaii to fill Big 12 slot, leaves Iowa State in shock.
Ames, IA- Iowa State and Coach Mitchell got word late last night that Texas Bowl officials had chosen Hawaii to fill Big 12 slot rather than Iowa State.
Iowa State 6-6, 5-3 and positioned 5th in the Big 12 conference find themselves celebrating the holidays at home rather than at a bowl site.
“How do we go 5-3 in arguably one of the toughest conferences in the nation and not get selected to a bowl game? This team has fought tooth and nail to position themselves well inside the bowl pecking order and we get passed up by Kansas State and Colorado…two teams which we beat,” said Coach Mitchell! “We finished 5th in the conference, we had one really bad game all year which happened to be the last game of the season and we get penalized this heavily for it. I would say to all those bowl committee members out there, you messed up and you’ve robbed our seniors, who haven’t gone to a single bowl game since being at Iowa State, of an opportunity to reap the benefits of their hard work and dedication throughout the year.”
Iowa State was also passed up by the Poinsettia Bowl which elected to go with Kent State, the PapaJohns.com Bowl which selected 6-6 Akron, the Insight which snagged Colorado, the Alamo which chose Kansas State and the PetroSun Independence Bowl which decided to take 6-6 Temple.
The frustration behind Coach Mitchell’s rant can mainly be attributed to his contract dispute with AD Jamie Pollard.
Prior to Coach Mitchell’s arrival to Ames he was under the influence that he would be signing a contract that would allow him to have a 3-year time period to meet his agreed upon goals; have a winning season and get a bowl birth, however after further findings it has come to Coach Mitchell’s attention the he really signed a 2-year contract which would mean it’s seven wins next year and a bowl birth or good riddance.
This is all due to the fact that he signed the contract prior to the 2013 season being finalized, so he could get an early start on off-season recruiting, consequently he lost a year of his contract which makes it look as if he never coached during the 2013 season at all, not with Kentucky, not with Iowa State. Needless to say he thought his stress level was high this year just wait until next year.
