          MR. 500
McCoy backs up all the Heisman hype with an impressive 2017 opening performance.

LARAMIE, Wyoming -- Riding the momentum of a surprise appearance in the 2016 Allstate Sugar Bowl and a 12-1 record the Wyoming Cowboys came into the 2017 home opener against the Iowa State Cyclones overwhelming favorites.

“You go from winning the national championship in 2015 to a 9 win season in 2016 and an Insight Bowl victory and all the sudden everybody forgets who you are,” said Coach Mitchell. “For the experts to say they were shocked by our 10-point victory is insulting.”

Iowa State (1-0) marched into the War on Saturday afternoon September 2, 2017 looking to bust some heads and knock Wyoming down a peg and that’s exactly what they achieved with their 41-31 victory.

To say it was a total team effort on the part of the Cyclones would be discrediting the monumental impact third ranked Heisman candidate HB Jamie McCoy had on the game.

McCoy, last season’s breakout true freshman, scored every which way imaginable for the Cyclones with the exception of kicking the extra points.

McCoy ended the afternoon scoring four touchdowns to go along with his 500 all-purpose yards and each touchdown was scored a different way.

He scored on a 92-yard kickoff return, a 92-yard punt return, a 66-yard catch and an 8-yard touchdown run in the third.

“I’ve had my fair share of great backs but I have never seen any of them score four touchdowns the way McCoy did today,” said Mitchell. “I would be lying if I said towards the end of the third quarter we weren’t trying to get him a rushing touchdown to cap off his amazing day.”

The same couldn’t be said for Iowa State sophomore CB Joe Hill, who in his first collegiate start was bullied and picked on by true freshman QB Curtis Blanchard and sophomore WR Anthony Moore to the tune of 91 yards and 3 touchdowns.

“This was his first start and well…it looked that way,” said defensive coordinator Norm Parker. “Hopefully the more experience he gets the better he’ll be, but we can’t have him being exposed like that again, not once we get into the meat of our Big 12 schedule.”

Moore finished the afternoon for Wyoming racking up 356 all-purpose yards to along with his three scores.

Although the Cyclones put up 41 points on the scoreboard their offensive numbers didn’t reflect that as they fell an eyelash short of 300 yards of total offense and looked rather mundane for the most part offensively struggling to convert on third down, converting just 5-of-11, and finding the red zone just twice resulting in one 8-yard touchdown run by Jamie McCoy.

With that said what can you really expect out of an offense that was given a 68 rating prior to the beginning on the season?

The Cowboys (0-1) will do their best not to let this opening season loss ruin the rest of the season as they’ll look to rebound next week when they go to Athens to take on the No. 15 Georgia Bulldogs.

On the other side of the spectrum Iowa State will look to build of their impressive 10-point victory over Wyoming next week when they head to Charlottesville, Virginia where they’ll take on the 1-0 Virginia Cavaliers for the first time in the programs history.

          92-yard punt return by McCoy.

            HAPPY GILMORE
Sophomore tailback Luke Gilmore leads Cavs over Cyclones 31-21.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia -- Iowa State (1-1) had no answer for the speed and power of 6’4”, 216 pound HB Luke Gilmore Saturday afternoon as not even a second half surge by the Cyclones was enough to save them from suffering their first loss of 2017.

Luke Gilmore carried the ball 21 times for 186 yards, caught 2 passes for 94 yards and scored 3 total touchdowns.

“He reminded me of Brandon Powell,” said Coach Mitchell. “He was physical, he was shifty, he was fast, he was the total package…Virginia has themselves a good one there.”

Virginia’s defense lead by leading tacklers SS Matt Johnson and CB Jason Hutchinson were relentless, sending the house on almost 75 percent of their 44 total defensive plays in an effort to slow down Heisman candidate Jamie McCoy.

The constant pressure did its job limiting McCoy to only 82 yards on 19 carries and one rushing score.

Another thing it did was limit Iowa State’s ability to convert 3rd downs holding the Cyclones to just 25 percent on eight chances.

With 4:55 remaining in the third quarter the constant pounding QB Jack Boley had to endure was too much as a blind side hit by DT Mike Roberts knocked the junior quarterback out for the remainder of the game with bruised ribs.

In came second-string QB Brian Young who did his best at leading the Cyclones to a second half come from behind win. Young, better known for his 86 rated speed rather than his arm, completed 9-of-14 pass for 132 yards and 1 score.

With Virginia (2-0) now having to defend against both the pass and run the Cyclones were able to put up two late scores both courtesy of HB Jamie McCoy, 1 receiving and 1 rushing.

With under 3:00 to play and Iowa State desperately needing their defense to come up with a stop now only down by 3 points senior HB Ryan Baker drove a steak right though the Cyclones heart with an 8-yard touchdown catch which virtually put the game out of reach at 31-21 and only 2:41 left to play.

The final nail in the coffin for Iowa State would come on a hail marry mid call that was designed to go to WR Eric Cook but instead went right into the hands of impact OLB Mike Williams.

“We didn’t have anything for them today,” said Mitchell. “Young came in after Boley’s injury and gave us a spark but we just didn’t make enough plays to win. Not being able to slow down Gilmore didn’t help us either.”

Iowa State has a chance to get back to their winning ways next week when they face cross state rival Iowa at home at 8:00 EST.

            78-yard td run by Gilmore.

                KINGS OF IOWA ANOTHER YEAR
Cyclones take care of Iowa 31-17, hold on to Cy-Hawk trophy for another year.

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State made it 3-straight over their cross state rival Saturday night with a 31-17 victory despite facing an early 10-0 deficit after the first quarter.

“They jumped all over us in that first quarter,” said Coach Mitchell. “I guess they wanted to strike while the iron was still hot. Our guys definitely looked like they were still shaking off last week’s 31-21 loss up in Charlottesville.”

The Hawkeyes (1-2) punched the Cyclones in the mouth early with a flawless offense attack and an even tougher defense, scoring on a Dallas Haynes 46-yard field goal and an Aaron Billings 3-yard touchdown run.

The early 10-0 lead the Hawkeyes had established would only last for one quarter as Iowa State (2-1) went on a 31-7 run which started with 5:41 remaining in the second quarter and didn’t end until the final gun sounded.

“It was like the entire team all woke up at once as soon as the second quarter began,” said Mitchell. “Although we won by 14 points I never felt confident in our lead until (TE) Derrick Ross dropped that fourth and goal pass on the 1-yard line with 2:32 remaining, as soon as I saw the ball hit the ground I knew we had this one in the bag, which was a game we really needed to have.”

Iowa lost more than their annual rivalry game as they also lost their second-string tailback David Parsons for two weeks with a strained PCL.

True freshman strong safety Terry Jones continued to impress his veteran teammates this evening as he lead the defensive charge for the Cyclones racking up a team high 6 tackles giving him 20 on the year which is 7 more than the Cyclones second leading tackler MLB Dave Smith who has 13.

“I knew he was going to be somebody that was going to contribute quite a bit to our defense early on in his career,” said defensive coordinator Norm Parker. “I could sit here and say he’s exceeding our expectations but then I would be lying.”

Booker, McCoy lead Cyclones over 'Huskers 52-27.

LINCOLN, Nebraska -- Iowa State recovered from an early adrenaline rush on the part of the Nebraska Cornhuskers to turn September 23rd's meeting into a route, destroying the ‘Huskers 52-27.

Since Coach Mitchell took over in Ames Iowa State has ran off four-straight victories against the once proud Cornhuskers and have outscored Nebraska 173-93 in that time.

At the start of the second quarter you would’ve never thought the Cyclones would turn this one into a laugher as a Chad Jackson 101-yard kickoff return and an Andrew Ryan 6-yard touchdown run had the ‘Huskers up 14-10 at the end of the first.

Two huge 3rd and 1 stops on the part of the Cyclone defense on Nebraska’s only two possessions of the second quarter resulted in fourteen Iowa State points and the route was on.

Iowa State followed up a 14-0 second quarter run with 4 second half touchdowns, two by HB Perry Booker, one 45-yard interception return by true freshman CB Mike Motley, and one 7-yard touchdown run by HB Jamie McCoy.

The real driving force behind Iowa State’s 25-point victory was their 300 rushing yards on 45 carries which resulted in 5 touchdowns – 3 by HB Perry Booker.

“The tandem backfield of McCoy and Booker couldn’t be stopped tonight,” said Coach Mitchell. “Booker really surprised me, we mostly use him as a complementary back but tonight he was at the top of his game and having two backs that can bring the pain was sure fun to watch.”

The senior tailback finished the evening with 19 carries, 3 touchdowns and 221 all-purpose yards.

Lost in the route were the performances of two Nebraska wide receivers, senior Chad Jackson and red-shirt senior Calvin Wilson. The two combined to haul in 9 catches, combined for 574 all-purpose yards and scored three of the ‘Huskers 4 total touchdowns.

Iowa State’s 300 yards rushing marks just the first time since November 17, 2001 they have achieved such a feat.

Iowa State now gets set to tackle a four-game stretch which includes games against Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma, and rival Missouri.
