Last game of road trip
The Dodgers played their last game of the 4 game road trip tonight vs the SF Giants and lost another close one 3-2.Ishii (1-1, 3.00) gave another great performance as he pitched 7 solid innings while giving up only 1 run, but the bullpen, as they have been doing lately, let the game slip away. Paul Shuey (0-1, 4.26) gave up a two out, two run double to the always dangerous Barry Bonds that proved to be the game winner. Shuey’s pitch was a 2-2 fastball with first base open. “I thought I could sneak a fastball up and away on Barry, but his hands are so quick that he was able to shoot it in the gap. I suppose I could have wasted a pitch, but I wanted to announce my presence with authority,” Shuey said after the loss. When Bonds heard of Shuey’s quote, he just laughed, “Announce his what?”
The Dodgers offence seems to be coming around as McGriff hit his second home run of the year off Chad Zerbe (1-1, 5.67), but they still only scored 2 run for the entire game. They don’t seem to be doing too much panicking as they are only 1 game back of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Nation League West. The Dodgers have an off day tomorrow and will then host a 6 game home stand with the San Diego Padres and the Giants. Darren Dreifort (1-1, 3.00) will be opening the first game of the homestand as he goes against Kevin Jarvis (2-2).

Game 1 vs Padres
It seems as though we keep writing the same story over and over again; Dodger lose a close one, again. Well, it is the same story for the Dodgers as they lost to the dreadful San Diego Padres 4-3. Darren Driefort (1-1) gave a great performance tonight for the Dodgers as they lost 4-3. Rocker (1-2, 8.22) let the game slip away in the 8th when Kelsko doubled in two to take a one run lead into the ninth. Kevin Jarvis (2-2) pitched a great 7 innings and was not in the final decision. Jarvis also helped his own cause in the third when he took a Driefot fastball over the right field wall for this 1st home run of the year. Commenting on the Dodgers woes was manager O’Neil, “We seem to be in the game until the 8th or 9th inning and we just seem incapable of putting the game away. Our bullpen was supposed to be one of the strongest in the league, however it is proving otherwise. I am not giving up all hope, but we definitely need some improvements.”
The Dodger will be playing game two of the series tomorrow night.

Game 2 vs Padres
The Dodgers finally win a game at home as the defeated the Padres 5-1 in an outstanding performance by Odalis Perez (3-1, 1.38) as he pitches his 8 solid innings scattering 7 hits. “I just seem to be pitching well. The plate looks huge up there and the corners seem to be generous to me. Hopefully I can keep up the good work and we can get some sort of winning streak going. That is the most important stat of all; WINS!! We just haven’t been winning very many games. When a team like San Diego comes in, we should beat them. This is the team we should beat every time out!” Shawn Green hit is third home run to lead the Dodger attack. Green is being more patient at the plate and trusting his hands more. “It’s just important that we win. Like I have always said, my bat will come around eventually.” The Dodgers have Kevin Brown on the mound tomorrow facing Adam Eaton for the finale of the 3 game series vs the Padres.

Re: Game 3 vs Padres
The Dodgers lost another series, but this time to the San Diego Padres in another one run game 5-4. Kevin Brown pitched a decent 7 inning allowing 5 runs on 9 hits including a 3 run homer to Ryan Klesko, his third of the year. Adam Eaton gave a great performance limiting the Dodgers to 3 runs over 7 innings. The Dodger got some offensive support from Shawn Green who hit his 4th home run of the year and second in as many games. It sailed over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the 3rd inning with no runners on. The Dodgers seem to be playing well, but are just unable to score a few more runs. So far, 10 of the 17 games have been 1 run affairs with the Dodgers winning only 4 of those games. It’s a obvious concern for the Dodger as they head into a weekend series vs the 9-7 SF Giants. Hopefully the Dodgers can come away with at least 2 this weekend before they head toward Cincinnati and Pittsburg.

Game 1 vs Giants
The Dodgers showed up today at Chavez Ravine and looked very similar to a AAA ball club playing against a Major League team. The Dodgers are slowly descending toward the cellar in the National League West.Kerry Wood (1-2, 3.90) pitched 7 inning, 4 runs, 6 hits and 5 K’s. All of the runs he gave up were in the first 3 inning in which 3 of the runs were scored on home runs. “I just didn’t hit my spots the first few innings,” Wood said after the game. “I gave a couple meat balls up to Snow and Benard and they hammered
both pitches over the wall. However, I don’t feel I pitched that bad of a game to get the loss. I think 4 runs is a very reasonable amount of runs to give up and still be in the ball game. Our hitting is so horrendous, that our pitchers almost have to pitch a shutout every game!” Wood is not far from the truth. All nine of the Dodgers hits were singles and the only RBI of the game came from Darryl Ward pinch hitting for Wood in the bottom of the 7th. The Dodgers 2-6 hitters (Thurston, Green, Jordan, LoDuca and McGriff) went a combined 0-20.
How do the Dodgers expect to win when the meat of the order can’t get a base hit. In this writers opinion, it’s a miracle the Dodgers have even won a game this year.
The Giants played the way a National League Champion should; they hit the ball and they caught the ball. Bonds went 3-4 with a double and an RBI, Snow homered and so did Bernard. Livan Hernandez (2-1, 3.04) pitched an impressive game going 8 innings, allowing 1 run on 8hits while striking out 4. On a positive note, John Rocker came into pitch the 8th and 9th allowing no runs on five hits and striking out one. His ERA was lowered to 6.52! The Dodgers look to improve on an awful day today as they host the Giants for game 2 of the 3 game series.

Game 1 vs Giants
After losing 2 of 3 against the bottom dwelling San Diego Padres, the Dodgers played a much better game tonight defeating the San Francisco Giants 7-4 before a sold out Dodger Stadium. Kerry Wood(2-1, 3.62) opposed Levan Hernandez(1-2, 4.13) in the first game of the 3 game set and pitched 6.2IN allowing 3R on 11H while striking out 5. His only mistake of the game came a on a 2-1 change up to Barry Bonds who crushed the pitch over the right-center field wall for a 3 run home run. Bonds when 5-5 with a HR, (2) 2B,3 RBI and is now batting .429. Bonds said after the game, “I was just seeing the ball extremely well tonight. I wish my teammates would actually hit as well, so that we may have won the game today. I can’t get a hit and drive in a run every time up. I was actually surprised they didn’t walk me with the way I am swinging the bat.” Wood acknowledged his mistake, “I tried to sneak the changeup by him, but he is too good for that. It’s not the first time he has burned me and I sure it won’t be the last time either.”
The game was actually quite competitive as both LoDuca and Ward homered for the Dodgers to give them the lead for good. LoDuca hit a 2-run homer to tie the game in the bottom of the 4th and Ward, playing for the injured Jordan, hit a 3-run homer off an 0-2 slider in the bottom of the 6th to secure the victory. Jordan was injured after his first at-bat of the game when he went down with a herniated disk and will be out for 51 days. Ward is happy to get a chance to play, however he knows it’s not under the best of circumstances. “It’s always hard to see a teammate go down in pain. But I will do my best to keep his position warm for him for the next 2 months.” Jordan was put on the 60-day DL immediately after the game.
The Dodgers also got a great game from rookie Joe Thurston we went 3-4 with a 2B and is batting .433 to lead the Dodgers. He certainly has not disappointed so far this year with his bat or his glove. John Rocker, who has been roughed up his last few outings, pitched a decent 1.3 allowing 1R and 1K. “I feel better out there and my cofiendence is improving every time I step out on the mound.” Gagne then came in for a lights out 1-2-3 9th to close the game out. The Dodgers will be back at Dodger Stadium tomorrow night for game 2 of the series.
