    Game 2 vs Phillies

The Dodgers came into today’s game against the Phillies and did some damage with the bats. They were lead by rookie Joe Thurston who went 3-4, 2B, HR and 5 RBI’s to give the Dodgers an easy 11-4 victory. Kerry Wood started and helped his own cause with a 2-out, 2-run double in the bottom of the second inning. On the mount, Wood went 6 innings allowing 4 runs on 11 hits and striking out 8. He allowed all 4 runs on home runs to Thome and Burell. Randy Wolf, on the mound for the Phills, only lasted 2 innings allowing 5 runs on 5 hits. “I just didn’t bring my good stuff today. The Dodgers offense has been their week point this year, but you wouldn’t know it they way they were swinging the bat today,” Wolf said after his shortest appearance of the year. “They flat out beat us!”

    PHI – 4 14 0
    LA – 11 16 0

        Game 3 vs Phillies

With a 4-0 win over the Phillies today, LA has won 5 in a row, the longest winning streak this year to jump 5 games over .500. Ishii was on the mound today for the Dodgers and he pitched 7 innings of shutout ball while allowing only 4 hits. Joe Thurston, on a huge hot streak right now, had 2 more RBI’s today to bring his total to 21 out of the #2 spot in the lineup. His is only 2 away from Shawn Greens team leading 24. Thus far, Thurston is hitting .419 2HR 21RBI 22SB. He is leading the team in hitting and tied in stolen bases with leadoff man, Dave Roberts. Roberts and Thurston are the only two hitters in the Dodgers lineup hitting over .300. When asked if this game was too easy for Thurston, he smiled and said, “No way. I am here early every day and I leave late every night. I want to continue to improve all faucets of my game. I will never be satisfied. Right now, I am in a tremendous up swing, but that is how the game goes. Sometimes you are hot and sometime you are cold. Right now, I happen to be in a hot streak.”

Morgan Ensberg was given the day off, give Caesar Izturis to play SS and move Alex Cora to 3B. Izturis went 3-4, 2B and 2 runs scored. Ensberg did get an at-bat late in the game pinch-hitting for Mota and tripling in 2-runs to secure the 4 run lead. Mota has been pitching well as of late and has been the Dodgers most consistent set-up man. “He will continue to get the ball the way he is throwing,” manager O’Neil said. “I would not be doing my job if he wasn’t in late in the game.”

The Dodgers look for the sweep tomorrow as they send out Darren Dreifort on the mound.

        PHI – 0 7 0
        LA – 4 13 0

                Dodgers sweep Phillies

It is official; the Dodgers have swept the Phillies and won 6 in a row. Timely hitting, from whom else but, Joe Thurston. Thurston hit a 2-out grand slam in the bottom of the 7th inning to lead the Dodgers to a 5-1 victory. The home run give Thurston 3 on the year with a team leading 25 RBI’s. “It’s great feeling to provide a boost when your team needs it,” the rookie said after the game. “I was just trying to hit the ball hard somewhere, but never trying to hit home runs. That is not my game. I like to hit the ball in the gap and utilize my speed.” Darren Drefort pitched great allowing only 1 run in 7IP. The run was on a Jim Thome home run. The Dodger pitchers are giving up way too many homers, but most of them are of the solo variety. Dodgers will now take on the Pirates for 3 games and then head to NY to face the Mets.

                PHI – 1 8 0
                LA – 5 11 0

                    Game 1 vs. Pirates

The Pirates come into playing a red-hot Dodger ball club who have won 6 in a row and put Josh Fogg on the mound to face Odalis Perez and the much improved Dodger offence. This game was all about pitching a one huge hit by Shaw Green. The Dodgers weren’t generating any offense when in the bottom of the 6th, Joe Thurston, singled to LF allowing Shawn Green to follow with a 2-run home run that would secure the victory and 7th win in a row for the Dodgers. “It was a fastball that he tried to run in on my hands, but I was able to put the barrel on ball and drive it out,” Green said. Perez, pitched another great game for his 5th victory in a row. He went 7IP, 1R, 3H and 10K’s. Fogg also pitched great going 5.2IP, 2R, 5H and 5K’s. His only mistake was the homer to Green.

Alex Cora has been hitting very well from the #8 spot, going 2-3 today and raising his batting average to .296. Cora is trying to become the 3rd Dodger hitter with a +.300 BA.
Kirk Saarloos will make his second start for the Dodgers tomorrow night as he faces Brian Boehringer.

                        Game 2 vs. Pirates

The Dodgers won their 8th in a row by defeating the Pirates 5-4 tonight. The Dodgers were down early 3-0 on a solo HR by Brian Giles and a 2-run variety by Pat Mears. In the top of the 3rd Eric Hinske doubled in Reese to give the Pirates a comfortable 4-0 lead. The Dodgers struck back in the bottom of the 3rd, still without a hit, before Saarloos singled to center and was followed by Dave Roberts singling to LF. Alex Cora, hitting in the 2 hole (Thurston getting the day off) doubled down the right field line to score both runners to make it a 4-2 ball game. The very next inning, with McGriff on 3rd, Mike Kinkade, playing for a tired Ward, SF McGriff home to make it a one run ball game.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Dodgers strike yet again when Cora doubles again to score Roberts from 1st to tie the game 4-4. The game remained that way until the bottom of the 7th when Ward PH for Saarloos and doubled. Roberts then singled to center and Ward was able to score rather easily to make it a 5-4 game.

Saarloos pitched great: 7IP, 4R, 7H, 2K. Gagne came into the 9th and struck out the side to record his 12th save of the year and pull the Dodgers into first place in the NL West by a .5 game over the Colorado Rockies! The Dodgers will look to make it 9 in a row and sweep the home-stand tomorrow afternoon!

                        PIT – 4 9 0
                        LA – 5 13 0

                        W:Saarloos(3-0, 3.42)
                        L:Boehrighner(1-2, 3.38)

NOTE: New format will be in place next game. Give me some feedback if you like it. If you prefer the old format, I will go back to it. Pitch counts will now also be posted. Stay tuned!!
