    New York Mets (MVP 2004)

Not only overshadowed in their own division, but in their own city, the New York Mets are looking for a big year in 2004. With major additions in the offseason, the Mets' front office expects good things from this years squad, but not without some growing pains, of course. Still a young team, the New York Mets will look to first become a factor in the NL East, and hopefully stand up to the Yankees for New York supremacy.

    CF - Mike Cameron
    RF - Karim Garcia
    CP - Brandon Looper

    Batting Order

    Starting Pitchers
    NYM - Al Leiter
    ATL - Russ Ortiz

The New York Mets looked to start the season off with a bang, visiting Turner Field in Atlanta and taking on the division powerhouse Braves.

Starting off slow, this proved to be a game that only the purest of baseball fans would appreciate. Not many hits in the early innings fueled the defensive minds of both teams, but pitching slowly wore down. As both Leiter and Ortiz fatigued, the Mets and Braves hit the ball better and better, enabling the Braves to take a 3-2 lead going into the top of the ninth. John Smoltz entered the game in the final frame and nailed it down, erasing the Mets' offense, and giving the Braves a 3-2 win.

    WP - Ortiz (1-0)
    LP - Leiter (0-1)
    S - Smoltz (1)

    Cameron - 2-4, 3B, 2B, RBI
    Matsui - 3-4, SB
    Reyes - 2-4

    A. Jones - 2-4
    Giles - 1-4, HR (1)

A day after losing to the Braves by a single run, the Mets hoped to rebound and beat their division rivals.

The first inning seemed to go well enough for the Mets, lead off by a triple from phenom Jose Reyes, but nobody was able to score the man from third. The rest of the game followed that lead, and the Mets were contained pretty well by Mike Hampton and the Atlanta defense. Andruw Jones provided spark in the Braves' lineup while batting 3rd, and helped the Braves win over the Mets, 4-0.

          LP - Glavine (0-1)

In the final game of the opening three game set of the season, the Mets were looking for a little daylight and some confidence.

In the first few innings, it was all New York. Hitting, pitching, and defense finally came together for the Mets as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. The Braves couldn't seem to get anything started off of Heilman and the Mets defense, but after fatigue settled in, a rocket went off inside the Atlanta bats. Hitting everything thrown at them, regardless of speed or location, the Braves mounted a comeback, and took the lead 4-3 going into the 9th inning. Smoltz came in, but had a less successful trip than before, blowing a save by giving up two consecutive doubles. The Mets battled back, scoring a run off of Smoltz, sending the game into extra innings. After New York went scoreless in the top of the inning, the Braves were down to a man on first with two outs, and a pinch hitter walking up to the plate. Julio Franco had the day off, but turned out to be the hero. The ancient first baseman hit a walkoff dinger far into the seats, giving the Braves a 6-4 win, and a sweep in the series.

                WP - Smoltz (1-0)
                LP - Heilman (0-1)

The Mets were hoping to start where they left off in the previous game, and hopefully start a little win streak.

Again, the Expos just seemed completely overmatched by New York. Every single batter in the Mets' lineup got at least one basehit, and the squad had 20 for the game. The Montreal offense wasn't nearly as efficient, getting only 8 hits as a team, and had only one runner cross the plate. The Mets win in another easy one, 7-1.

                            WP - Trachsel (1-0)
                            LP - Hernandez (0-1)

The Mets were hoping to start where they left off in the previous game, and hopefully start a little win streak.

Again, the Expos just seemed completely overmatched by New York. Every single batter in the Mets' lineup got at least one basehit, and the squad had 20 for the game. The Montreal offense wasn't nearly as efficient, getting only 8 hits as a team, and had only one runner cross the plate. The Mets win in another easy one, 7-1.
