    NYM - Pedro Astacio
    ATL - John Thomson

In the rubbermatch of this rivalry series, the Mets sent out their hard-throwing righty Pedro Astacio in hopes of taking two out of three against the Braves.

Yet again, the New York offense was something to be proud of. All but one of the starters came through with at least one hit, and numerous players had more than one. The hit total, however, did not translate into many runs, as the Braves defense put the clamp on many rallies-in-the-making. John Thomson threw a good ballgame, but was outdueled by Astacio, and the Mets won 2-0.

    WP - Astacio (2-0)
    LP - Thomson (0-2)

    Cameron - 3-3, 2B
    Piazza - 2-4, 2B, RBI
    Reyes - 2-4, SB

    Furcal - 2-4
    Drew - 1-3

      Starting Pitchers
      NYM - Steve Trachsel
      PIT - Kris Benson

With the Pirates coming to town, the Mets hoped to give the Shea faithful what they want and continue their offensive success, as well as shut down the opposing hitters.

By no means a slugfest, this game was won and lost by pitching and defense. Steve Trachsel, going into the 7th inning, had only allowed three hits. Due to this, the Pittsburgh offense managed to cross the plate not once until the 8th, when Bobby Hill hit a solo homerun. Although the score may be misleading, the Mets won this one easily, 3-1.

      WP - Trachsel (2-0)
      LP - Torres (1-1)

      Floyd - 2-3, 2 RBI
      Reyes - 2-4, 2 SB

      Hill - 1-3, HR (1)
      Mondesi - 1-4, 2B

The winless Al Leiter took the hill for the New York Mets, hoping to get his first win of the year.

Early on, the Pirates suprised the Mets by jumping out to a 1-0 lead. However, the opposing Mets offense was not impressed, and managed to get on the board in the bottom of the inning and take the lead on a two -run blast by Mike Piazza. Leiter eventually settled down on the hill, striking out 5 batters and not giving up another run. New York managed to score two more runs, and put away the Pirates by the score of 4-1.

            WP - Leiter (1-2)
            LP - Williams (0-1)

            Piazza - 2-4, HR (2), 2B, 3 RBI

The division foes of Montreal visited Shea Stadium to take on the surging New York Mets, who hope to improve upon their record against the Expos.

From the getgo, things weren't looking too good for the Mets. In the first inning, the Expos jumped out to a 2-0 lead off of numerous doubles. Glavine looked as if he was destined for another disappointing outing, and in the early going, there was nothing to prove him otherwise. Later on in the game, however, the Mets offense finally answered. Jose Reyes and Kaz Matsui got on base, and Mike Piazza did what he does best, and drove the baseball over the right centerfield wall. The Expos answered again, and after 8 1/2 innings, the Expos were up by one run. With one out and a runner on second, Reyes was intentionally walked. Matsui fouled out, bringing up hitless Cliff Floyd. On the second pitch of the at-bat, Floyd went yard, well over the right field fence, winning the game for the Mets 7-6.

                        WP - Stanton (1-1)
                        LP - Smith (0-1)

                        Piazza - 2-4, 2 HR (4), 4 RBI
                        Reyes - 4-4
                        Floyd - 2-5, HR (1)

                        Cabrera - 2-5, 2B, 2 Runs
                        Vidro - 3-5, 2 2B, RBI

The Expos continued to pour on the offense, and the Mets' defense had no answer. The first eight innings, it was all Montreal, but New York turned it up in the bottom of the ninth. Mike Cameron took Armas Jr. deep to right field for his first of the year, but it just wasn't enough. The Expos put away the Mets, 6-4.
