              Mariners Take Two From Mets
              The Seattle Times

Seattle took two of three games from New York at Safeco Field and were lucky enough to avoid Pedro Martinez. Both the M's wins were decided by only a run, while in game three Carlos Beltran and David Wright both hit home runs, in a 9-5 Mets win. Seattle improved their record to 52-15, and are on pace with the 2001 Mariners team to hit 116 wins.

David Wright hit two home runs and drove in five runs.

Game One - Seattle 2, New York 1 (12 Innings)
              WP: Arthur Rhodes (3-0)
              LP: Mike DeJean (4-1)
              HR: Wright (9)

David Wright (NYM) - 1-4, HR, RBI, Run

New York had a 1-0 lead with one out in the bottom of the ninth, until Looper was called in for the save. With two outs and two on, Adrian Beltre had a RBI double tying the game at one. Looper got the blown save, and Seattle eventually got the win, due to a Bret Boone RBI single in the 12th inning.

Game Two - Seattle 6, New York 5
              WP: Julio Mateo (2-3)

              M's Aquire Teixeira, Gonzalez
              The Seattle Times

Seattle brought over the young and hard hitting first baseman Mark Teixeira from Texas earlier today in exchange for Miguel Cabrera and Pokey Reese. Seattle also got young AAA star Adrian Gonzalez, in an effort to cut salary. Miguel Cabrera will be missed by fans, even though his stay in Seattle was short. Cabrera was slumping bad in the M's lineup, he had only one home run, and only nine RBI in 28 games. As for Pokey, he was more useful for his glove, Pokey hit one home run, drove in 15 and stole 20 bases in 66 games, he also only comitted one error. The Mariners cut 1.3 million dollars of salary with the trade. Jose Lopez was called up to replace pokey at short, the 21 year old had five homers and 22 RBI for Seattle last season. As for Teixeira, the Mariners got a star player. At only 24 years old, Mark is a power hitter, and should fit in nicely with Beltre and Sexson. Adrian Gonzalez, the other player the M's aquired was sent to AAA Tacoma, he is 22 years old, and has good potential.

                    Seattle's Offense Erupts Against Oakland
                    The Seattle Times

Seattle outscored the A's 31-13, and averaged just about eight runs a game, helping them take three of four games in Oakland. Jeremy Reed, Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson all hit two home runs in the series, and Gil Meche pitched a gem in game two, striking out 12 batters in rout to his eighth win. Joel Pineiro also pitched well, and managed to pick up his tenth win of the year, he is the fourth pitcher in the MLB this year to accomplish that. Joel has had a no decision in his last three starts, but finally broke out of the funk, with a 6+ inning performance, allowing only two runs. Seattle is 55-16 on the year.

Richie Sexson has been quite the addition, he hit home run number 22 in the series.

Gil Meche pitched a complete game, allowing only one run and struck out 12 A's, Meche has 70 K's this year, and eight wins.

Ichiro went 4 for 5, and that wasn't even the best part. Ichiro managed to steal a career high four bases in the game, and against one of the best catchers in baseball in Kendall.

Joel Pineiro finally picked up his tenth win of the year, and it didnt come easy. Pineiro only allowed two runs, but the M's didnt give him much run support. Luckly the M's bullpen came through, like they have all year. J.J. Putz went almost two innings allowing no runs, and closer Eddie Guardado closed out the game barely, allowing a solo home run to Kendall, but was able to hold on for the 3-4 win.

                    The Seattle Times

The Padres were able to hold on to some close games and take the series from Seattle in San Diego. Led by Brian Giles, who hit three home runs in the series, the Padres pitching stayed strong and took games two and three from the M's. San Diego had five total home runs, and eleven runs, while Seattle only had one home run, but managed to score ten runs. Jamie Moyer got the lone win for Seattle, his tenth of the year. Moyer and Pineiro are the only teammates to have ten wins, besides Houston's Roy Oswalt and Roger Clemens.

Brian Giles had three home runs and ten RBI's in the series.

                      Re: Seattle Mariners (ESPN 2K5)

Ups and Downs of the Year
                      The Seattle Times

The Mariners are rolling, they are one game ahead of the 2001 Mariners, who tied the all time record for wins in a season at 116. Joel Pineiro and Jamie Moyer are both 10 game winners, the only other duo is Clemens and Oswalt for the Astros. The bullpen is incredible, with a combined record of 18-4, and an ERA of less than 1.75. Rafael Soriano, is 8-0 with over 25 K's and an ERA of less that 2.00. Eddie Guardado is fifth in the MLB in saves with 21 and Arthur Rhodes has proven he was worth the trip back to Seattle. As the M's near the halfway point, everything seems to be clicking, no one has been injured for more than three days, the bats are producing and the pitchers are cruising. Hopefully the second half is just as good.

                      Ups
                    • Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson; 47 comnined home runs, 127 combined RBI's and 249 combined hits, they were worth every dime.
                    • Jeremy Reed; is batting .399 and leads the MLB in hits with 129, three more than Ichiro. Yeah, Ichiro. May even be the first rookie since Ichiro to start in the All-Star game.
                    • The M's rotation; with a combined record of 38-14 the starters have been great. The big question for this years team was the pitching, and so far it's been incredible.
                    • Ichiro; has 125 hits, a .375 average and 11 home runs nearing the halfway point. Ichiro is having another MVP type season, he also leads the MLB in stolen bases and runs scored.

                      Downs
                    • Victor Martinez; aquired back in April for Miguel Olivo and Raul Ibanez, Victor only has one home run and 25 RBI for Seattle in 64 games. Martinez has a .258 average, one home run and 28 RBI's this season in 72 games.
                    • The DH Spot; First Bucky, then Snelling, then Cabrera, now Teixeira. Bucky started the year at DH, but batted only a .156 in eight games, before being sent to AAA Tacoma. Chris Snelling then took over, but had the same struggles. Snelling and Scott Spiezio were traded to Florida for Miguel Cabrera. Miguel was decent, he hit lots of doubles and drove in a few runs, but still had his slumps. Finally, Seattle got a good DH, Pokey Reese and Miguel Cabrera were sent to Texas for Mark Teixeira, who has 2 homers and 8 RBI for Seattle in only six games, plus Seattle was able to cut over a million dollars in salary with the move.

                      Where are they now?
A look at former M's and how they are doing with their new teams.
                    • Raul Ibanez, traded to Cleveland for Martinez; Raul has 5 HR, 24 RBI and a .268 average in 67 games. Miguel Olivo was also dealt in that trade and has 1 HR, 7 RBI and a .179 average in 18 games, he is currently in the minors.
                    • Shiggy Hasegawa, traded to New York for Rhodes; is 0-2 with 26 K's and a 3.84 ERA in 51 innings pitched.
                    • Scott Spiezio, traded to Florida for Cabrera (now with Texas); Scott has 4 HR, 23 RBI and is batting .205 in 39 games. Chris Snelling was also traded to Florida, Chris has 1 HR, 7 RBI, and a .232, but is on the 60-Day DL with a hamstring injury.
