    Pitching Holds Padres to Nine Hits

    The Mariners top three starters packed a 1-2-3 punch and knocked out the Padres in a three game series at Safeco. Joel Pineiro pitched a complete game shutout allowing only three hits. In game two Jamie Moyer did the same, but only allowed a Brian Giles single in the second. In the final game Bobby Madritsch went nine innings, allowed no runs, but Peavy was just as strong, leaving the game at 0-0 after nine. Jeremy Reed singled home the winning run in the eleventh completing the much needed Seattle sweep. The Padres had only nine hits in the whole series and a batting average of .103.

        Seattle continues to roll, after sweeping San Diego last week, they started this week off with three wins in Baltimore. The Mariners hit eleven home runs in the series, led by Richie Sexson's three blasts. Beltre and Boone hit two, along with Jeremy Reed. Seattle outscored the Orioles 26-2 in the three games.


        Randy Winn had 5 hits, a home run and 3 stolen bases in the series.

            Thanks. It will be hard for me to keep up. In 2001 the M's went from 33-12 to 47-12, so for me to keep up, I have to keep winning. A 14 game win streak would be nice.

The first game was a 13 inning battle, won by a Miguel Cabrera single, and a save by Eddie Guardado. Game two also went into extras, Richie Sexson hit a two run homer in the 11th inning for the win. Gil Meche won his third straight start in game three 3-1, Eddie Guardado saved the game, and Bret Boone picked up another two doubles, he leads the majors with 21. The Devil Rays announced the firing of skipper Lou Pinella not two hours after the Mariner sweep. Pinella announced he will retire, Tampa Bay is 17-32 this season.
