Pitching Holds Padres to Nine Hits

The Mariners top three starters packed a 1-2-3 punch and knocked out the Padres in a three game series at Safeco. Joel Pineiro pitched a complete game shutout allowing only three hits. In game two Jamie Moyer did the same, but only allowed a Brian Giles single in the second. In the final game Bobby Madritsch went nine innings, allowed no runs, but Peavy was just as strong, leaving the game at 0-0 after nine. Jeremy Reed singled home the winning run in the eleventh completing the much needed Seattle sweep. The Padres had only nine hits in the whole series and a batting average of .103.

Jamie Moyer threw a one-hitter for his seventh win of the season. Brian Giles had a one out single in the second, but Moyer retired the next 23 batters for the shutout victory. Moyer also lowered his ERA to an unbelievable 1.27 in nine games started.

Jake Peavy and Bobby Madritsch had a great pitching battle, Madritsch pitched nine innings and had 8 K's, while Peavy pitched 8.1 innings and struck out three, neither allowed a run to cross the plate. Finally, in the eleventh Jeremy Reed singled home Ichiro for the win. Rafael Soriano was great in relief, picking up a strikeout and the win in two innings pitched.
