    Wow! Nice work.

Only loss is to the MIGHTY Wolverines.
    Blind to this impending fate
We let the world carry our weight
It's back breaks with every mile
But we all live in denial

        #3 Michigan   33   39-72
        #1 Illinois      36   42-78

Heartbroken Wolverines watch Illini tear down the nets

The fireworks exploded. The confetti poured from the rafters.

        The tears flowed.

On one side, tears of joy and celebration, as Dee Brown hugged Deron Williams, as Luther Head pounded the broadcast table in jubilation. As Bruce Weber hugged everyone in sight, the tears of the Illini flowed freely and happily.

Across the court, tears of an entirely different kind were everywhere. Tears of a team that no one thought could get here. Tears of a team that defied the odds. Tears of a team that stunned the college basketball world by defeated 36-0 North Carolina in Overtime. Tears of a team that came up just one game short.

Daniel Horton sat on the bench, a towel draped over his head, his shoulders visibly shaking as he sobbed. Dion Harris sat on the floor in front of the broadcast table, dejected, his eyes vacant. Coach Tommy Amaker did his best to console his fallen warriors.

The game wasn't decided until the final moments. The Illini held a 75-72 lead, and got the ball with 40 seconds to go. They ticked the clock all the way down as Amaker ordered his team not to foul. And as the clocked ticked inside 10 seconds, Deron Williams drove to the hoop, with Courtney Sims and Brent Petway in his way--only to kick it out to the corner, where Dee Brown caught the ball, and sealed the championship for Illinois with a gut-wrenching triple as the shot clock expired, that sent the Illinois-friendly crowd of St. Louis into a frenzy, and effectively ended the game.

Illinois loses Luther Head to graduation now, and is expected to lose Dee Brown and Deron Williams to the NBA early. Michigan's roster contains only one senior, reserve forward J.C. Mathis. Everyone else is expected to stay in school, which should make Michigan the favorite to cut the nets down next year. But until then, the images of Illinois cutting them down will never leave the minds of this Michigan team.

(Note: Regrettably I got the stupid scholarship glitch where I lose the scholarship I offered a player when the player goes elsewhere. So I only had 3 schollies to give out.)

(Note: Regrettably I got the stupid scholarship glitch where I lose the scholarship I offered a player when the player goes elsewhere. So I only had 3 schollies to give out.)
