Destiny over Dynasty; Michigan needs OT to stun unbeaten North Carolina

When the final buzzer sounded, Daniel Horton sent the basketball flying a mile high in the St. Louis night, and he hugged the nearest person closest to him--teammate Dion Harris.

Horton put the Wolverines on his back. When Michigan fell behind 20-12, he brought calm to the huddle when they called timeout. When UNC finally pulled ahead at 60-51, he took command, sinking back to back three point plays. And when the Tar Heels desperately fouled in OT, he sunk his free throws, ensuring Michigan's fate in the National Championship game.

North Carolina believed they were the team of dynasty, with coach Roy Williams commanding the ship and quickly returning the Tar Heels to glory. Rashad McCants and Sean May pummelled the Wolverines.

But Michigan was the team of destiny. Still driven by the ghosts of their school's tainted past, they were not going to let North Carolina win. In 1993 Chris Webber handed the title to the Tar Heels. This version of the Wolverines were not about to let UNC escape again.

But the job is not finished. There is still one game left--Illinois. The team that Michigan aspires to be. Illinois has a curtain over the Big Ten, but Michigan can strike a blow for the Maize and Blue by derailing their conference foes. Illinois won the first two meetings, the second one a convincing demolition in the Big Ten Championship.

The Big Ten may not be the best overall conference, but Monday in St. Louis, the two best teams come from the Big Ten.
