                            #7   Wake Forest   32   40   7-79

Wolverines stave off demonic performance, claim Preseason NIT Championship

Justin Gray was unstoppable. 17-33 from the field, 7-10 from beyond the arc for a scorching 41 points. His backcourt teammate Chris Paul dished out a career high 19 assists. One would assume that ACC powerhouse #7 Wake Forest crushed #25 Michigan in the Preseason NIT Final.

But the Wolverines don't have a shabby backcourt either, as Daniel Horton and Dion Harris burned Wake all game. Still, it seemed like Wake would prevail, as Gray hit his final three with 31 seconds remaining to put Wake ahead 79-78. After running some clock and calling timeout, Horton snuck through the Deacons' D and took an inbounds pass from Harris and laid it in with 3.4 seconds left. Gray's final shot clanged off the rim--seemingly the only shot he missed all game--and Michigan upset Wake to win in overtime, 80-79.

#25 Michigan was ripe for an upset, heading into their fifth game in as many days after their Preseason NIT Championship. They opened their home schedule against Sacramento State of the Big Sky Conference.

But the Wolverines were determined not to disappoint their home crowd, as they have emphasized the need to establish home court dominance. And this was a very successful first step, as UM shot 60%, won the assist battle 25-16, cleaned up on the glass 35-25, and ultimately won the game handily, 92-51.
