Re: Gopher Nation - NCAA 11

    Exclusive Interview with Coach Kill

This is the first time we've been able to talk to Coach Kill since his hiring at the beginning of the 2010 season.

Jerry Kill took over the Gophers team that was in shambles, and has been able to re-build it into a national contender after just 1 1/2 years behind the helm. He has compiled a 15-4 record and the Gophers are currently ranked #3 nationally. Last year, the group outperformed what many thought they would do, and this year has been a perfect season so far going 6-0 (3-0 in Big Ten play), and have their sights set at a BCS bowl bid. Coach Kill has finally taken time from his busy schedule to sit down for an interview, and will now be commenting more after every game with us.

    Here it is:

Gopher Report: Coach Kill, since you took over the program, you've compiled a 15-4 record and are ranked #3 in the nation according to the Coaches' Poll, how do you explain it?
Jerry Kill: We've just been hard workers, and last year we could have had two more wins in which we lost some tough OT games. I think that we performed well and the hard work by the whole team has resulted in a success. All of the guys have bought into my system and the whole team is clicking. We will continue to work our hardest, and we will continue to improve. Our goal is the National Championship, but there's a process and we will continue to follow it to that goal.

GR: Your recruiting class last year was ranked 89th, this year it seems that you've been able to pull in more highly ranked recruits, is there any reason for this?
JK: We've been working hard at pulling in the young men that will help our system, we've gotten far more recruits than even I thought we would have at this point, but the rankings don't matter so much to us, we're worried about the type of player that we are bringing in, and all of these guys are quality ones. We will help them in their development and work our hardest with them, and I expect the same out of them.

GR: Your winning record has had some national pundits saying you will be considering a higher ranked job at a higher University such as Ohio State or Michigan, what do you have to say about these rumors?
JK: I don't comment on rumors, but let the fans of the Gophers know that I am 100% committed to this program, and don't have any intention of leaving. I will be here for as long as everyone wants me here. Let that be known.

Coach Kill has a tough slate left to play, but the Gophers have an inside track with their tough schedule to make it to a BCS Bowl bid. Coach Kill told us that he didn't do many interviews in his first year and half because he didn't want any distractions, and now will be more willing to offer insight and comments after every game.

      Week 8 - @ Ohio State

Gophers Sink Ohio State, Move to #1

Columbus, Ohio - We've thought it was impossible for the Gophers to make it this far, but in a down year for the Ohio State Buckeyes, 2-4 (0-3 in Big Ten play), the Gophers sunk them at "The Shoe" 31-14. The Gophers just continue to play well and beat opponents handily. They continue to play well and have moved up to the #1 status in both the Coaches' Poll and the BCS standings. The Gophers did this all without the leading Hesiman Canidate Da Jon McKnight who got knocked out early in first half.

Coach Kill's comments: "Our team continues to play as one unit, and it doesn't matter if one guy goes down, another steps up. MarQueis Gray continues to play well and he's playing like the QB we knew he could be. It doesn't matter what their record is over there, they're still a great team that is always dangerous. Our guys handled it well, and now we must prepare for Michigan State."

Turning point: Michael Carter's 91 yard touchdown interception was a 14-point swing in the Gophers' favor. It propelled the Gophers to the victory.

The Gophers play host to the Michigan State Spartans next week, and look to continue to play well. The Spartans are 5-1 and ranked #20 nationally. It will not be an easy game.

Yeah, I'm happy with the way the team is playing, I'm surprised I'm doing so well. If I continue to get these scores, I might have to try those sliders that you're rolling with.

Week 9 - vs. Michigan State

              Gopher Roll Despite Gray Injury

Minneapolis, Minnesota - The Gophers destroyed the Michigan State Spartans 56-21 despite MSU's Larry Capers running for 237 yards and 3 touchdowns. He absolutely steamrolled the Gophers defense, but 5 turnovers ultimately doomed the Spartans. 2 fumbles were returned for touchdowns and 2 set the Gophers up for prime scoring chances which they ultimately converted. MarQueis Gray got injured early in the 1st half, tried to come back, but will be out for a week so Tom Parish, a RS FR had to come in. He did okay converting 6/15 for 129 yards and 3 TD's. He will be getting the start this upcoming week because Gray will not be able to go, so it could be a tough game vs. the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor. Da Jon McKnight continued his stellar Heisman canidate season with a 8 Rec, 172 yards, and 4 touchdown performance. He continues to get open without much trouble.

Coach Kill's comments - "We won another one, but we gave up for too many rush yards and relied on the turnover game too much. We can't give up 265 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns and expect to win. We have to be better at tackling, far too many missed tackles. I can't be too upset with another big win, but if we don't correct these things, it could be really tough in the upcoming games. That said, I'm very proud of the way Tom played today coming in for Gray. He looked poised, and found the open man. Also, what else can I say about Da Jon? The guy is amazing, and he'll make an NFL team happy in the next draft, but the guys, they're just focused on the here and now. We have 4 more tough games left, so we have to remain focused on the current goal, and that's to beat Michigan next week."

Turning point - On a punt return, Michgan State's B.J. Cunningham fumbled the ball and Greg Mezzenga returned it 32 yards to stretch the score to a 14-point lead. It opened the floodgates to more Michigan State turnovers.

                GOPHER RECRUITING REPORT

Here is an updated look at the Gophers final in-season recruiting. They have recruiting 14 guys, and filled all of their needs so far, Coach Kill told me that until he knows if more players are available after the season, he is done for now. I'll have a more detailed report after all the recruiting has been done.

Well, I'm still working on tweaks. I'm off to a 2-0 start in year three. Beat Texas at home 49-16, and Texas A&M on the road 45-22. Thought I turned a corner with two of my last three games last year coming down to the final play. Still got to find the right tweaks.

Heck, you're rolling, and it's your dynasty. I'd just wait to make the changes for next season.

That's my plan. I really do expect a major drop-off next year. 3 of my top receivers are leaving plus my top two backs, and I don't think I have much to replace them with. It's going to be interesting next year for sure, so I'm hoping I can win it all this year, but the game vs. Michigan State could've been much closer, but I got lucky that they had so many turnovers.

That's kind of what has happened to me in year 3 so far. Texas moved the ball on me but had turnovers. The fumble return I had for a touchdown made that game much more of a blowout than it really was. They were driving in to make it 14-7, and instead I get a FR for a TD, and go up 21-0.

Texas A&M isn't as good as Texas, so I expected to beat them. They moved the ball on my defense pretty easily. But they got the ball in my territory 4 or 5 times (other than their TD drives) and the drive stalled around the 40 or 45 and they had to punt. They also missed a FG or two from around 35-45 yards out.

Why would you put up 56 points on my Spartans!?

Yeah, I hope that I will get a competitive game against Michigan, I think that I will. Yeah, and they do seem the move the ball just fine, but just seem to stop at certain points. I give up too many big plays though, I think it's going to hurt me.

Your Spartans kept fumbling me the ball, I think they wanted me to win

                              Gophers Knocked Off

Ann Arbor, MI - The Gophers have finally lost, they went into Ann Arbor and saw the Wolverines destroy them in every aspect of the game getting handed a 54-23 drubbing. It was a bad game all around for the Gophers, and Da Jon McKnight only had 2 catches for 35 yards with 1 touchdown, but it was just a bad game all around. The defense couldn't stop the high powered Wolverine offense. With MarQueis Gray out, Tom Parish started and didn't do so well throwing for 40 yards with a touchdown and 2 interceptions. J.D. Pride came in and played well going 10-21 for 163 yards and 2 touchdowns, but it was all for naught because Tate Forcier was a force today going 25-40 for 370 yards and 4 touchdowns. It's a bad loss for the Gophers, but they are still will have a chance to win the Big Ten title, but it looks like a national championship may be out of the picture. The Gophers dropped down to #7 in the polls, but they play host to the Northwestern Wildcats.

Coach Kill comments - "It was a tough day for our whole team. The defense couldn't stop anything, and we demand better from our guys better than that. They are a good team, but we have to be better, we'll regroup and get ready to face Northwestern. I guarantee you we'll be better prepared for this game. Our effort was unacceptable."

Turning point - There's not really just one moment, but the Gophers inability to move the ball made a big difference.

                                Ouch, tough loss.

I've played with Minnesota a few times, and Gray is a stud. I can see things being difficult if he's injured.
