Re: Ripening Some Oranges - NCAA 13 Cuse

Just a quick update on how the conferences will go. Syracuse will be moving to the ACC as well all other teams scheduled to change conference next year. As the dynasty progresses, I will change conference as I see fit, trying to move teams realistically based on location, program tradition and recent success. I think that will keep things interesting and I'll try to put a story behind them as the moves occur.

    *Conference Changes*

    2013
    ACC - Syracuse, Pittsburgh
Big East - Boise St, Central Florida, Houston, Memphis, San Diego St, SMU

        Orange 2012 Schedule Released

Syracuse University released it's 2012 full schedule today, kicking off the start of the teams 34th (21st for football) and last season as a member of the Big East conference. Many fans around Central New York are sad too see this very successful partnership come to an end, as well as excited to see their football team in a better position to succeed in the years to come. While the Orange will start the season with 4 of their first 5 games either at home, or in a advantageous neutral site, they will be forced to finish the year with 4 of 5 games on the road.

Week 1 - The Orange will open the season at home against Northwestern, in a game that is anyone's to win. Both teams will be looking to make a statement starting the season, so hopefully the crowd will give Syracuse the edge to start 2012 on a positive note. Prediction - Syracuse 24, Northwestern 20

Week 2 - This is the game that fans circled on their calender right away. A chance to put your team on the map here as Syracuse meets #2 USC at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. There is no doubt this will be the toughest game on the schedule, and a flawless game will be needed here for a win. Prediction - USC 38, Syracuse 17

Week 3 - The team gets a break here in week 3, facing Stony Brook (FCS East). All they have to do is make sure to show up focused and they should win easily. Prediction - Syracuse 42, Stony Brook 7

Week 4 - The first true road game of the season comes 4 weeks in when the Orange travel to the land of 1,000 lakes, facing the Gophers of Minnesota. This is another interesting non-conference matchup, but the edge goes to Minnesota here at home. Prediction - Minnesota 28, Syracuse 24

Week 6 - After an a week off to rest, the team starts their final Big East run against a team they'll be sure to see again many times in the future. The conference schedule opens with fellow ACC defect, Pittsburgh. The Panthers have won 7 straight games against the Orange, with Syracuse's last win coming on November 7, 2004 in a 38-31 shootout. Don't expect 69 points to be scored in this contest. Prediction - Pittsburgh 17, Syracuse 14

Week 7 - Next up the Cuse travel to New Jersey for the 2nd time this year, facing the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The Knights are a team the Orange have traditionally dominated, with a career head to head record of 27-11. With that said, Syracuse has won just 2 of the teams past 7 meetings, which could plant some doubt in the program with another loss here. Expect this to be a close one, Prediction - Rutgers 28, Syracuse 27

Week 8 - UConn is always a fun team to hate for members of Otto's Army, perhaps more so during basketball season. There has been a longstanding rivalry between these teams since the inception of the Big East, and this could be the beginning of the end. With the Huskies issues in their basketball program, all eyes in this rivalry turn to the football field. Despite their young football program, the Huskies have embarrassed the Orange, winning by a combined 97 points over the last 5 matchups. While Syracuse is on the rebound, I don't see this trent reversing it's course. Prediction - Connecticut 35, Syracuse 24

Week 9 - A trip to South Florida usually involves relaxation, beach time, and maybe a chance to watch crazed zombies on bath salts eat peoples faces off. For the Orange, it will be all about work. If Syracuse wants to return to relevance nationally, they will need to start winning road games in their conference. Here is where they get a much needed moral booster against the Bulls. Prediction - Syracuse 24, South Florida 10

Week 10 - For the second straight week, Syracuse finds themselves on the road, traveling to Cincinnati. In the last 6 matchups, the Bearcats are 5-1, and each time the victor has won by 14 or more points. This trend should end this year, but Cincinnati is a tough team at home. Prediction - Cincinnati 17, Syracuse 7

Week 11 - The only home game left on the schedule comes here as Teddy Bridgewater and Louisville come to town. Syracuse needs a win here if they want to stay in the hunt for a bowl game. Prediction - Syracuse 21, Louisville 14

Week 12 - Every couple of years, Syracuse pulls a few tricks out of their sleeve and upsets a team they have no business beating. From the victory that cost Charlie Weis his job at Notre Dame, to a blowout win against West Virginia last year...the Orange have been known to shake the college foundation from time to time. If they were to do it this year, this late season match-up in Missouri could be it. The Tigers aren't the powerhouse we saw just a few years ago, when Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin moved the ball at will. While unranked, the are the much more prestigious team, and have the talent to be a top 20 team by December. Look for a surprise finish here, moving the Orange closer to the recently evasive bowl appearance. Prediction - Syracuse 38, Missouri 35

Week 13 - The final game of Syracuse's Big East life will fittingly be against one of their replacements. The Temple Owls, who's football team started in the Big East this year, are joining the Big East along with Houston, SMU, San Diego, Boise St, Central Florida and San Diego St. as full members in 2013. Both teams will play this game looking to make a farewell statement. The teams haven't met since 2004, when Temple beat the Orange 34-24. Prediction - Syracuse 31, Temple 20

                Marrone Relieved of Duties

The laughter was short-lived for Marrone.

Syracuse - The last 10 years have been anything but peachy but the fans of Central New Yorks only division 1 football teams. More like sour grapes. The team hit another low today, firing head coach Doug Marrone after just 3 seasons. Marrone's record finished at 17-20, with 1 winning season. He led the Orange to a win at the Pinstripe Bowl over Kansas St in 2010. Marrone failed to win over his superiors, due in part to a 5 game losing streak to close out the year last fall after a 5-2 start. The team was just 6-15 in Big East games under his reigns. Marrone could not be reached for comment.

The team has hired Kevin Mettler, an up and coming assistant coach from the area as their new head coach. Mettler has a lot to prove as he takes control over a sinking ship. This former powerhouse is watching the rest of the football world pass it by, fading into obscurity year by year. "It all starts with recruiting, we need the best players in here to help us get back on top." Mettler said at his inaugural press conference today. "We have a good foundation right now, and I need to keep building us up. It won't happen overnight, but give me a couple years and things will turn around."

Syracuse has only committed to Mettler in the short-term though, signing the coach to a 1 year deal. According to a source, if the team fails to go .500 and finish the the top 5 in the Big East, athletic director Daryl Gross will look elsewhere for 2013.

                  (0-0) @ (0-0)

It wasn't pretty at times, but Syracuse started off their 2012 campaign with a great win against the Northwestern Wildcats. The Orange relied mainly on starting HB Jerome Smith, as the senior carried the ball 37 times for 111 yards and was successful at moving the chains all day. Thanks to this, SU had almost double the time of possession of Northwestern.

Ryan Nassib had a solid game as well, completing 64% of his passes and throwing two touchdowns. He was sacked four times on the day, and found himself holding on to the ball too long. Both of his scores came in the 3rd quarter, turning a three point halftime deficit into an eight point lead by the end of the period. Nassib has said he plans to spread the ball around to his receivers this year, and got off to a great start in doing so. Four different players caught three or more passes, with both Sales and Stevens catching touchdowns.

Deon Goggins was a huge disruption in the middle today. The starting defensive tackle recorded 2.5 sacks and recovered a fumble that swung the momentum in this game. Micah Robinson had 1.5 of the teams five sacks, including getting credit for a safety late in the 4th quarter. Shamarko Thomas and true Freshman Wayne Morgan each led the team with 9 tackles.

A failed option by the wildcats led to a quick turnover to start the 3rd.

Stevens makes the wide open grab to give Syracuse a 28-17 lead.

                      (1-0) @ (1-0)

The Syracuse Orange entered today's match-up against USC with a quiet confidence. The players believed that playing their game would put them in a position to take down the number two school in the nation. Oops. The Trojans just out to a 38-0 lead in the 2nd quarter, relying on the terrific running of Curtis McNeal. The 5'7" senior scored 5 times, and finished the game averaging 9 yards a carry. Cuse's defense was overwhelmed right from the beginning, allowing McNeal to run for first downs before even laying a finger on him.

Heisman frontrunner Matt Barkley was quiet all game, with the exception of a late touchdown pass in garbage time. He didn't have to do much of anything today, other than give the ball to McNeal 30 times and watch him dazzle.

For Syracuse, Ryan Nassib and company got off to a slow start and didn't find a rhythm until it was far too late. Constant pressure on the quarterback made many of Nassib's throws off target. Jerome Smith struggled to find holes all day, and the team could have certainly used some better running from him.

Curtis McNeal celebrates the first of his 5 touchdowns.

Jawanza Starling stops a drive at the goal line with a big interception.

                          (0-0) @ (1-1)

For a game that should have been a walk in the park, this match-up between Syracuse and lowly Stony Brook (FCS East) had the hometown faithful biting their nails for far too long. The Orange won the opening toss and elected to kickoff, a decision which the Seawolves gladly accepted. They took the ball and marched 78 yards in 13 plays; their quarterback scoring on a scramble from six yards after the play had broken down.

Otto's Army shook the score off. This team was not worthy to play on the same field as the Orange. How would they ever stop us? That wasn't the case, and Syracuse was forced to punt the ball away. The wolves would drive down the field again, this time stalling in the red zone and settling for a chip shot field goal. At the end of one, it was Stony Brook 10, Syracuse 0.

As the second quarter unfolded, the Orange continued to struggle on offense. On their first drive of the period, Alec Lemon was stripped and lost the ball at the SB 30. After a punt, Syracuse drove down into the red zone but stalled out, giving their dependable kicker an easy field goal to get them on the board. Krautman missed though, pulling the ball left and leaving the team with another wasted drive.

Then, out of nowhere, a burst of offense. Jerome Smith capped off a 70 yard drive scoring from 2 yards out with 2:11 left in the 2nd. After a Stony Brook three and out, Ryan Nassib went deep on the very first play. Alec Lemon was left uncovered, and easily waltzed into the end zone untouched. The Seawolves countered, and the team marched down the field with an efficient no-huddle drive which ended in a touchdown with 31 seconds left in the half. Despite almost 28 minutes of embarrassment in the first half, Syracuse tied the game up at halftime with a field goal at the buzzer.

In the third, Stony Brook would strike first, and hard. Nassib was crushed as a blitz overwhelmed his offensive line. The quarterback fumbled, and a defender was right on the scene to pick up the loose ball and run 60 yards to retake the lead. This would be the last time SB would score in the game, as Syracuse gathered itself for the rest of the game. In fact, it took just 37 seconds until the game was tied again. Nassib found Jeremiah Kobena wide open on a slant over the middle. The Sophomore split the safeties and scampered all the way for the score. Three minutes later, Jarrod Foster caught his first touchdown pass of the season, giving Syracuse their first lead of the game. Tne Orange would tack on a couple field goals for insurance, and survived a scare at home.

*Note - NCAA 13 does not record the individual stats of FCS schools, really sucks.

Ryan Nassib throws towards a wide open Alec Lemon. Lemon led the team with 9 catches.

Ryan Nassib gets crushed for a sack, leading to a Stony Brook score.

Shamarko Thomas played this pass well, resulting in the only turnover forced by the Syracuse defense.

                              (3-0) @ (2-1)

The 2-1 Syracuse Orange left the comfy confines of New York tonight for their first road game of the year. With the result they got tonight, the team may try to schedule all road games in the future. Syracuse dominated the Minnesota Golden Gophers 20-0 in front of 50,805 at a sold out TCF Bank Stadium. Despite not turning the ball over once, the Golphers failed to tally any points.

Ryan Nassib continues to play well in his last season with the Orange. The Senior completed 68% of his passes and threw two more touchdowns. Nassib has now thrown 8 on the season compared to just two interceptions. His big target tonight was Marcus Sales, who put the game out of reach in the third quarter on an 80 yard bomb. It was the first play-action pass the Orange attempted all day, and Minnesota was terribly unprepared for it.

Syracuse is now 3-1 heading into Big East season play. They will have a bye next week, and welcome Pittsburgh to town in the first week of October.

Can you guess with WR this ball is going to?

A rare Syracuse sack for someone other than Deon Goggins.
