        (8-4) @ (8-4)

In what will be remembered as one of the best bowl games of 2012, the Syracuse Orange and Miami Hurricanes needed three overtimes to determine the winner of the 2012 Champs Sports Bowl. The Hurricanes would trump Syracuse in the 3rd OT by scoring a touchdown after the Orange had settled for a field goal to start the frame. It was a terrific game in which Miami looked poised to win multiple times.

It was a low scoring first half, with both defenses playing well most of the game. Miami got on the board first calling a screen pass into a Syracuse blitz, resulting in an easy touchdown. Now in the 2nd quarter, the Orange would find the end zone. Prince Tyson Gulley ran one untouched up the middle to tie the game at 7. As the first half wound down, Syracuse went 3 and out with under a minute left, giving the 'Canes a last drive to end on a good note. While they only managed a field goal, that drive ended up being the difference after the game was over.

Coming out of halftime, Miami looked poised to take over control. Brandon McGee ran the 3rd quarter kickoff 98 yards to put the Hurricanes up 17-7. Syracuse refocused though, and Ryan Nassib threw his first of two touchdown passes to David Stevens 3 minutes later. Nassib was very well contained by the Miami defense, and had to rely on his check-downs most of the game. The quarterback limited his mistakes, playing well enough to put the team in position to win the game.

In the fourth quarter, the Orange would tie things up with 2:56 to go as Ross Krautman booted a 32 yard field goal just inside the left upright. With the score knotted at 17, Miami was driving with under a minute left. Just when it looked like they would enter field goal range and win the game, Ri'Shard Anderson lept into the air and intercepted a long pass inside the five. It gave Syracuse new life, and silenced the pro Miami crowd in the Citrus Bowl.

Syracuse would start first in overtime, but stalled out and kicked a field goal. Miami had another chance to take the game, and even faced a 1st and goal from inside the 1. After the first down run was broken up in the backfield, backup DT Corey Boatman sacked the quarterback to force third down. Miami tried to power it in with their fullback, but the defense was once again all over the play. Miami also settled for a field goal, sending the game to a 2nd overtime.

There were a total of 2 plays, and two penalties in overtime number two. First, following a false start, the Hurricanes would thread a pass down the sidelines for a spectacular touchdown grab by Allen Hurns. The play looked to be very close to the sideline, but was never reviewed by the booth. Syracuse would take over needing a touchdown to tie. After a Miami offsides, Nassib lofted a perfect pass to Alec Lemon on their first play, forcing a third OT.

Despite a great start to the 'Cuse's 3rd possession, where the team had the ball at 2nd and 4 from the 7 yard line, another stall-out occurred. Once again, the Hurricanes would need just one play. R Scott caught a 12 yard comeback route, and then launched Keon Lyn right over his back, crushing the hopes of Syracuse fans everywhere as he waltzed into the colored grass.

It was a valiant effort (and season) for Syracuse, one that will hopefully build a strong foundation for the team over the next few years. The team will lose stars such as Ryan Nassib, Alec Lemon and Marcus Sales. Will anyone be able to fill in their shoes next year?

            Mettler Signs Extention

The Syracuse Orange announced today that Head Coach Kevin Mettler has agreed to a 3 year contract extension with the team. Mettler lead the Orange to an 8-5 record in his first season, which ended in a heartbreaking triple overtime loss to Miami.

The road ahead won't be easy for the 25 year old. The team is now entering the ACC, a more challenging conference. While he wowed experts with the depth of his recruiting, Mettler failed to pull in a big time recruit. To succeed in a major conference like the ACC, more quality will need to be brought to central New York. He will also have to deal with a good amount of talent leaving the team. Here are a list of those who have played their last game for the Orange:

            • Senior WR Alec Lemon (89) - Draft (Round 4)
            • Senior WR Marcus Sales (85) - Grad
            • Senior LB Dan Vaughan (84) - Grad
            • Senior QB Ryan Nassib (83) - Grad
            • Senior SS Shamarko Thomas (81) - Grad
            • Senior LG Zach Chibane (79) - Grad
            • Senior RG Lou Alexander (78) - Grad
            • Senior DT Deon Goggins (77) - Grad
            • Senior TE David Stevens (77) - Grad
            • Senior LB Dom Anene (74) - Grad
            • Senior DE Brandon Sharpe (74) - Grad
            • Senior LB Siriki Diabate (72) - Grad
            • Senior FB Carl Cutler (71) - Grad
            • Senior DT Corey Boatman (66) - Grad
            • Freshman FB Myles Davis (65) - Transfer (Playing Time) - Kent St

Syracuse has hauled in a transfer of their own as well. Uconn Freshman tackle Dalton Gifford (71) will be joining the team. Gifford recorded four pancakes in his first season without allowing a sack. He grades better as a run blocker than a pass blocker, and is a very big frame at 6'5", 297. Mettler heads to offseason recruiting next with 4 scholarships left to offer for 2013.

In other coaching news around the NCAA, Arizona has fired Rich Rodriguez and replaced him with Arkansas St head coach Gus Malzahn. Rodriguez has accepted an offer as the head coach of Florida Atlantic University. The Kansas Jayhawks have fired Charlie Weis and hired Dave Campo for 2013. Weis is now the head coach of Southern Mississippi. The National Champion USC Trojans have signed Lane Kiffin to a 4 year extension through 2016.

Notre Dame Accepts Offer from Big Ten

As one storied franchise exits, another enters. Notre Dame has decided against joining the Big East and will take over for Penn St. starting in the 2013 season. The Irish, who have been an independent since the inception of their football program 125 years ago, felt it was time to join into a conference before it was too late. University Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick had this to say; "The way the conferences are going, we felt it was necessary to join before we were left behind. College sports are going towards super conferences, and we feel the Big Ten gives us a great spot to go forward from."

Notre Dame will join the Legends conference, filling the spot once held by Penn St.

Other conferences will sport completely new looks in 2013. The Big East will not host 12 teams, and split into 2 divisions. They will be named the Historic and Global divisions. Conference USA is another conference going through drastic changes. Here is a list of what the new conferences will look like this year:

Note: Due to the fact that NCAA 13 makes you keep at least 4 teams in a conference, Army and Navy have been moved from Independent to the WAC to allow the rest of the moves to be made.

Finally, the NCAA has announced that if the Big East does not finish the 2012 season with at least 2 ranked teams in the BCS, they will lose their automatic qualifier in the future.

The 2013 Season is finally here, and Syracuse fans are already reminiscing about 2012. The Orange hung tough with the 18th ranked Wolverines, but fell apart in the fourth quarter, losing 37-20. New starter Charley Loeb struggled, throwing 2 costly interceptions in the 4th quarter before being benched in favor of rookie Jonathan Fox. Fox was on fire, completing 10 passes in the last quarter along with a touchdown pass.

Michigan was led by their star halfback Fitzgerald Toussaint. The Senior ran for over 200 yards and 2 touchdowns, making things look easy all afternoon. Syracuse faces their first ACC opponent next week, meeting with an old rival in Boston College.

Tight End Beckett Wales had a monster game for the Orange, but failed to find the endzone

Raymon Taylor ends all hope of a win with a pick six in the 4th quarter.

Man that stretch of ACC games @ Georiga Tech, @ Florida State and @ NC State all teams preseason ranked is really going to make or break the season.

If you can win all 3 it will surely set up an interesting race in the ACC

Ugly. Today was one of those games you try to forget as quickly as possible. Offensive line - terrible. Wide Receivers - drop city. Running Backs - stayed on the bus. Defense - pylons. Starting quarterback - well, take the worst of Jeff George and combine it with the post surgery throwing power of Chad Pennington.

The Orange were actually in the game in the second half when the wheels came flying off. Charley Loeb threw interceptions on two straight passes, setting the Eagles up in the red zone both times. It was a day where anything the BC offense tried worked to perfection. Receivers ran open all day, and even if they were covered, would haul in grabs over the defense.

Syracuse's quarterbacks were sacked a total of 8 times, with rookie Jonathan Fox drawing the brunt of the pain. Welcome to the ACC, Syracuse...I'm sure you're thrilled about joining a year early still.

Alex Amidon does a nice job shielding Shu Mungwa as he hauls in one of his two touchdowns.

                              What a pass rush!.

Love the optimism, but I'm fighting to keep my job at this point. Dreaming to coach another season.
