      (2-2) @ (3-1)

What a thriller at the Carrier Dome tonight. The Syracuse Orange and Pittsburgh Panthers would need overtime to decide this week 5 matchup. The Orange would come out victorious thanks to a Jerome Smith touchdown to start the extra session. Pittsburgh was unable to pass the line of scrimmage in their possession, giving Syracuse a 34-27 win.

Neither team led by more than 7 points at a time, though Pitt never held a lead at any point in the game. Ryan Nassib continues to shine, throwing two more touchdowns and failing to intercepted for the fourth time in five games. Nassib connected with 8 different receivers in the game, but favored his most reliable targets most often. Alec Lemon, Marcus Sales and tight end David Stevens combined to catch 15 passes and two touchdowns.

The game really heated up as the fourth quarter was fading away. On a 3rd and long, Alec Lemon broke free on a deep pattern, easily corralling in the pass from Nassib. He would run into the end zone untouched, giving Syracuse a 7 point lead with just 2:00 to go. Pittsburgh wasn't ready to give up yet. Tino Sunsari led them quickly down the field and into scoring position, but injured his shoulder late in the drive. With just a minute left and a first and 10 at the 12 yard line, backup Mark Moore would have to be the one who forced overtime. It took just one play, as Moore lofted a pass to Cameron Saddler for the tying score.

Syracuse would get the ball first as overtime began, and found themselves with a 3rd and 12 at the 27. Nassib found Stevens on a wheel route, and the tight end rumbled all the way down to the 5 yard line. After a Jerome Smith 2 yard run and an incomplete pass, Smith finished the drive off with a run right up the middle. Pittsburgh would need a touchdown to keep the game going, but Jay Bromley came up with a big first down sack for the Orange. Deon Goggins continues his stellar play as well, following up with a sack of his own on 2nd down. Faced with 3rd and 30 from the 45, the Panthers elected to take a shot at the end zone, and had the pass swatted away. Syracuse would successfully defend the 4th and improbable, sealing their 3rd straight win and earning 53 points in the latest media poll.

Ri'shard Anderson gave Syracuse the momentum heading into halftime with this pick-6.

Cameron Saddler hauls in the game tying touchdown with under a minute left.

                (4-1) @ (2-3)

The Syracuse Orange, sitting pretty at 4-1 and on a three game win streak, came into New Jersey ready to roll over the Scarlet Knights. Instead, it was them who rolled over. Rutgers scored 35 second half points on their way to routing the Orange 44-16. The team ran for over 300 yards, and averaged over 10 yards per carry against a Syracuse defense that looked out of place and slow many times tonight.

Despite being down just six at halftime, the Orange almost abandoned the running game completely in the second half. It was a move that backfired in the end, as the defense would be the group to suffer. While Rutgers were busy scoring touchdowns, Syracuse was busy going three and out and getting themselves injured. Ryan Nassib, Alec Lemon, Jerome Smith, Prince Tyson Gulley and Marcus Sales all missed some of the game due to injury. Only Tyson Gulley did not return, after he left the game with a hip pointer. It won't get any easier next week, as the team returns home to face red hot Uconn (6-1).

Juan Jamison scores his first of two touchdowns on the day.

One! Two! Three! Ryan Nassib pinned in his own end zone for the safety as the first half wound down.

Jeremiah Kobena hauled in a pass here and would split the safeties for the touchdown. He was one of the few bright spots for the Orange today, averaging 20 yards per catch.

Re: Ripening Some Oranges - NCAA 13 Cuse

                    (6-1) @ (4-2)

The Syracuse Orange bounced back from their embarrassing loss at Rutgers last week in a big way tonight. It seems the team missed playing at home, and completely controlled the action against the 6-1 UConn Huskies. The Orange ran the ball 47 times for 200 yards, with fullback Carl Cutler scoring two touchdowns. With the score already 7-0 Cutler capped off a 17 play drive with his first of the game. He would also pound one in from a yard out in the fourth quarter, effectively sealing the win for Syracuse.

Uconn could not stop the slow, methodical drives of the Orange all night. Syracuse ran 76 plays compared to just 50 for the Huskies. Another big difference were third downs. The Orange converted 61% of their opportunities, while Connecticut was just 2-9. Converting on so many third downs allowed the Orange to control the ball and the clock.

The Orange now move to 5-2 on the season, just a half game behind UConn in the Big East. They will travel to South Florida next week to face the Bulls, hopefully with a chance to take over 1st in the conference.

Jerome Smith plows his way into the endzone in the third quarter.

The big DT Jay Bromley skied for an interception on a screen pass late in the game.

It took 3 Huskies to finally bring Alec Lemon down.

                        (5-2) @ (4-2)

"A game to build the foundation on. In five years, we could look back and say 'this was the game that started the swing back to relevance for the Orange.' This team is finally going in the right direction." Those were the words of ESPN First Take star Skip Bayless following the Orange's 33-32 win in South Florida.

Syracuse scored on 4th and goal from the two, when Prince Tyson Gulley just made it across the line as a defensive lineman was bringing him to the ground. Keep in mind, this all happened with two seconds left.

Syracuse has always struggled with South Florida, and it looks like the result would be the same today with the Bulls up by 6 and the clock winding down. As the Orange faced a 4th and 6 from their own 38 and just over four minutes to go, coach Mettler had a tough decision to make. Go for it in a non-advantageous position, or punt it away and trust your defense that has struggled most of the year. They elected to punt, and as the Bulls began to drive down the field, you could see the regret start to fill the young coaches eyes.

After a 9 yard pass on 1st down near midfield, Deon Goggins made the play of the game for the Syracuse defense. Goggins burst up the middle off the snap, burying the running back in the backfield for a 4 yard loss. USF would end up punting it away with just over two minutes left, setting the stage for a possible game winning drive.

QB Ryan Nassib never panicked, and methodically led his troops down the field. The Orange were able to either get out of bounds or pick up the first down, stopping the clock on every play but one on the drive. They were now set up with 1st and goal from the two with 25 seconds left and one time out. On 1st down, Tyson Gulley - who was playing for the injured Jerome Smith - was hit at the five for a loss of three. The Orange took their timeout with 18 seconds left. On second down, the target was Alec Lemon on a fade pattern. The receiver had the ball in his hands, but had it knocked away by a defender. They tried the same play again on third down, but the throw sailed over Lemons head and out of the end zone. Faced with 4th down and five seconds left, South Florida jumped offsides, giving Syracuse the ball just outside the 2. Surprisingly, Mettler went back to the run again on 4th down, and Gulley snuck his way into the endzone, finishing the great winning drive.

The Orange improve to 6-2 and 3-1 in the Big East. The travel to Cincinnati next week as their schedule takes a turn for the worse down the stretch.

USF Tight End Evan Landi makes a nice one handed touchdown catch for the Bulls.

Ryan Nassib lets one loose to a wide open Jeremiah Kobena.

Prince Tyson Gulley found tons of space to run on this screen pass.

Big East Looking to Expand More

The Big East will be undergoing a massive makeover starting next year, but the conference isn't done trying to get larger. Sources say the Big East would like to add one or three teams in 2015 to accompany Navy into the league. The conference will have 12 members in 2013, while Navy gives them 13 in 2015. The league would like to get to 14 or 16 to even things out, and word is they have started to reach out to some schools.

The big fish in their search is currently Notre Dame. The school is an independent team in football, but already a Big East basketball team. The draw of a stronger Big East football conference could be appealing to them as their legacy has faded some over the years. The Irish are currently 9th in the BCS, and would be a great addition to the league.

If the Irish prove to be unattainable, some teams from smaller conferences come into play. One team that is supposedly open to the idea of joining the Big East is East Carolina. The Pirates are losing rivals Houston, UCF, Memphis and SMU to the conference in 2013, and are hoping not to get stuck in a weaker Conference USA. Another possible target from Conference USA is Tulsa, and the teams 6-2 record in 2012 should help their cause if the Golden Hurricanes are interested.

On to the MAC, where the Big East could find a couple filler teams to go to a 16 team conference. According to sources, the Ohio Bobcats, Toledo Rockets, Miami (OH) Redhawks and Buffalo Bulls have all had discussions with the conference. It should be an interesting few weeks as the Big East sorts through their possibilities and makes a decision on the future of the league.

Thanks. I fear that the success so far has been due to the schedule being heavily weighted towards home games so far. I finish the season @ Cinci, vs. Louisville, @ #17 Missouri and @ Temple. All these teams are at worst 5-3. I'll be thrilled if I can split the last 4 games and go 8-4.
