Re: Ripening Some Oranges - NCAA 13 Cuse

    (2-1) @ (1-1)

The Florida St Seminoles are never an easy team to play against. Despite the team not being ranked in the top 25, they are a team loaded in talent. Catching them on a day where they show up usually means a loss is on its way.

Syracuse hung tough with the Seminoles, but in the end fell just short, losing 20-17 in front of 45,000 fans at the Carrier Dome. It was one of those games where Florida St did just enough to win, dangling the proverbial string in front of the cat and pulling it away. If it was 3rd and 5, Florida St got 6. 3rd and 11, FSU got 8, then broke two tackles to get 12. There were times when it felt like Florida St would get to 3rd and long on purpose, just to destroy their spirits by converting the next play.

The Orange fall to 1-2, but shouldn't hang their head. It was a brutal start to the schedule, and even hanging close (let alone winning one) was an accomplishment. Next up is Boston College, as the home stand continues into the month of October.

Cornerback Wayne Morgan shows his moves as he spins off a would-be tackler following an interception.

Jarrod Foster was this close to staying in bounds and scoring on the teams final drive of the game.

Jonathan Fox is stripped of the ball on a sack that allows Florida St to hold on to their three point win.

Re: Ripening Some Oranges - NCAA 13 Cuse

        (0-4) @ (1-2)

Well it wasn't pretty but the Syracuse Orange were able to eek out a victory this afternoon to climb back to .500 on the season. Freshman kicker Michael Everett booted a 39 yard field goal as time expired to lift the Orange over Boston College 17-14.

Syracuse couldn't get much going on offense, as BC forced plenty of short passes and shut down the running attack well. Tim Little would get the team on the board first when he settled into a seam in the zone to make it 7-0. BC would answer as the first half was expiring, as Christian Suntrup found Julian Terrall from 16 yards out. After a scoreless third, Bryan Jones would power his way in to start the 4th quarter, giving the Orange a 7 point lead. Once again, the 2 minute defense from Syracuse was a disaster. The Eagles drove down the field and scored with just over a minute left to tie the game.

It seems the team scored too quickly, however. After a first down pass to Jeremiah Kobena that included a 15 yard facemask penalty, Jonathan Fox found Jarrod Foster on a corner post for 21 yards. Three plays later, the Orange were set up testing their rookies clutchness as BC tried to ice the freshman. It made no difference, however, as Everett blasted the winner right down the middle.

Trapped deep in their own zone, Boston College tries to force one, which leads to SU's first TD.

Tim Little stands in the endzone wide open, and would make the score 7-0 with this grab.

Spiffy Evans ties the game up with 1:14 to go.

Michael Everett plays hero today, winning the game as time expires.

Re: Ripening Some Oranges - NCAA 13 Cuse

            (3-1) @ (2-2)

The Syracuse Orange entered todays matchup with North Carolina State knowing that this was a must win. The team will head out on the road soon, facing much tougher opponents than the team they played against today. In the end, it was just the same as always...no 2 minute defense. NC State defeated the Orange 49-47 in triple overtime, in a game that Syracuse should have closed out far beforehand.

Despite forcing 4 interceptions from Tony Brosius, the Orange could not capitalize fully, allowing the Wolfpack to stay in the game. Freshman Zac Gschwend turned the momentum of the game completely as he ran back an interception late in the first half. The Orange defense flew all over the field in the 3rd, forcing 4 more turnovers, but the offense just wasn't quite in sync. Jonathan Fox is in the midst of a Sophomore slump, as he struggles to hit 200 yards passing.

It was a real heartbreaking loss for Syracuse, as the team falls to 2-3 on the season. They head out to Maryland next week, in an absolute must win. The team won't return home for another 4 weeks when it hosts the Buffalo Bulls. Getting one win by then might be too much to ask if the team doesn't figure out what's going wrong in crunch time.

(I wish I was in the mood to go more into detail about this game, because it was a great classic. What a sour loss though, really fell apart on defense late in the game. I have photos from the game that will be updated, most likely tomorrow.)

              Chasing the Heisman

Keith Marshall has been so close to winning the Heisman. The Georgia halfback lost out to Oregon runner De'Anthony Thomas by just 2 points a season ago. Still, the Junior from Elkin, North Carolina isn't being noticed by his peers or the media the way he should. In the words of Rodney Dangerfield, "I don't get no respect."

Marshall currently ranks 2nd in the NCAA in rushing with 806 yards, and has just passed 3,000 in his short career. He averages 7.3 yards per carry, and has scored 8 times. Only Clifton Richardson of Virginia has run for more yards, 6, and has played in 1 more game than Marshall.

Here's the scary part. In his 2154 rushing yard season last year, Marshall averaged 154 yards per game. In 2014, the average has shot up to just over 200 yards per game. Surely a season with over 2,500 yards rushing will win him a Heisman, right? If not, it's time to rethink the requirements of the writers who vote on the historic trophy, and find new ones who'll get it right.

                (2-3) @ (3-2)

The Syracuse Orange used a wild 2nd quarter to upset the Maryland Terrapins tonight 34-26 in the rain. Surprisingly, as the remnants of Hurricane Helio crossed the Chesapeake, these two teams seemed to play better offensively than what was expected. Jonathan Fox finally found some rhythm for the Orange, throwing for almost 300 yards and 4 touchdowns. Jarrod Foster was a major threat yet again, hauling in two touchdown passes on the night. That brings his total up to four on the season.

While the team can enjoy the victory tonight, it's focus will soon shift to Clemson, currently ranked 8th in the NCAA.

Jeremiah Kobena finds himself wide open over the middle, hauling in the game sealing touchdown pass.

Jarrod Foster fights his way into the endzone on his 2nd touchdown of the game.

Maryland throws one last hail mary to try and tie the game.

Red River Rivalry a Laugher in 2014

The yearly rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma took on added meaning this season, and with good reason. Texas came into the match-up ranked #2 in the coaches poll, and #1 in the media. Oklahoma was knocking on the door themselves at #4. The last time these two teams played in such an important game was 2008, when Colt McCoy and #5 Texas upset the #1 Sooners 45-35. Once again, Texas was the team to end up victorious. The Longhorns embarrassed Oklahoma, out-gaining them 492 to 253 in the game. Led by a balanced attack of quarterback David Ash, and the two back committee of Joe Bergeron and Malcolm Brown, Texas was able to control the clock, and keep piling on the points. The game was out of hand early, and was already 28-7 at halftime. Texas would go on to win easily 41-21. Based on that win, the Longhorns jumped to #1 in the country, even though Wisconsin also remains undefeated. The team will have to work hard to keep it's top spot, however. It faces the very tough task of heading to #16 Texas Tech on Saturday in another big conference game.

                    (3-3) @ (6-0)

Entering the game as major underdogs, the Syracuse Orange certainly played like a team lacking confidence. The Orange turned the ball over five times, and kicker Michael Everett missed two field goals badly in the South Carolina rain. Clemson, on the other hand, didn't have to do very much to secure a win. The team stuggled in the red zone in the first half, having to settle for four field goals early. The offense picked up in the 2nd half, as the field goals turned into three touchdowns. The difference in skill and size really started to show in the 2nd half.

Syracuse hung around for a good portion of the game, and should be commended for it. It's hard enough to play with Clemson when you aren't making any mistakes, let alone turnovers everywhere. Freshman quarterback Derrick Ingram fumbled three times in the first half and lost two of them, killing two drives. It was a tough loss, but the team must refocus and turn some heads in Virginia next saturday.

                      Orange Land Five Star Recruit

For the first time in his 3 year tenure as the head coach at Syracuse, Kevin Mettler has landed himself a big fish. Gary Harrison, the number 6 recruit in this years class, has committed to Syracuse for the 2015 season. The Galion, Ohio native plays center, and is 5'11", 270 pounds. He is good in both the pass and run blocking game, and should start for the Orange from day one. Harrison chose the Orange over a number of schools, including scholarship offers from Clemson, Auburn and Florida St. Here is a look at the current list of recruits for 2015 as of now:

                        (3-4) @ (6-1)

It was a bright, sunny day in Virginia today as the Syracuse Orange visited the Cavaliers in ACC play. Despite the beautiful weather, the play on the field was a bit uglier.

Virginia's option offense turned out to be just effective enough to squeak out a win, but they didn't look like a top ten team. The Cavaliers looked tentative to let their quarterback throw the ball, and Syracuse picked up on this early. By filling the box with 8 or 9 players, the Orange could contain the dynamic running game a little better.

The Syracuse offense was just as bad. Jonathan Fox went down with an injury, while throwing an interception no less. Fox would miss the rest of the game, leaving the reins to freshman Sean White. While Derrick Ingram sees snaps at quarterback every game, he is more of a running quarterback, something that coach Mettler isn't ready to turn his offense into completely. White is a pocket passer who can stretch the field, although he didn't do that very well today. The glorious state of New York comes calling next week, as the Orange get a much needed trip home to face Buffalo of the Big East.

Virginia finds the endzone just at the right time, going ahead with under 3 minutes left.

Bryan Jones runs untouched for his 7th touchdown of the season.

Syracuse's last second attempt to win is batted away as time expires.

                            (4-4) @ (3-5)

The Buffalo Bulls have improved by leaps and bounds over the past few years, but still have a ways to go if they want to contend against the Orange. The Bulls are new in the Big East, and find themselves with a respectable 4-4 record on the season. Tonight, they gave Syracuse a good showing, but came up short of a pretty big upset in the Carrier Dome.

With under 2 minutes remaining, backup quarterback Marcus Thomas found Rudy Johnson deep down the right side for a 45 yard bomb, bringing the Bulls within three. As Jeremiah Kobena said after the game, "enough is enough." Kobena took the onsides kick attempt, blew through a hole in the coverage, and ran all the way for the clinching score.

Bowl eligibility is still very much in play for Syracuse, who has just 3 games remaining. With the season finale at home against UMass, one has to think a victory in Pittsburgh or Wake Forest should be enough to seal a third straight bowl game for Mettler.

                                (4-5) @ (3-6)

The Syracuse Orange took to the road once again this week in a must win game against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Wake Forest has had a terrible season, and are right in the middle of a pretty lengthy losing streak. With a bowl game still within reach, the Orange needed a road win here to stay in the hunt.

It didn't take long for the teams top freshman to make himself known to the Deacon faithful. After a three and out to start the game, the Cuse were forced to punt. Zac Gschwend beat his man down the sideline and arrived just in time to crush the Wake Forest return man, forcing a fumble which would be recovered by Wayne Morgan. The team would cap off their drive when Adonis Ameen Moore finally scored his first touchdown of the year.

Right after Syracuse added a field goal to make the score 13-3 with just 20 seconds left in the half, Wake fumbled the ensuing kickoff. This set up Jonathan Fox to hit Tim Little wide open for a second late first half score.

The defense would shut it down in the 2nd half, getting Syracuse back to .500. One has to think a bowl game is almost a certainty at this point, due to the teams season finale against Umass. A win in Pittsburgh on Thursday would be nice regardless to erase any doubt of it.

Zac Gschwend unloads on the return man in the first quarter, setting up a touchdown.

Gschwend continued his stellar game with an interception later in the half.

Sophomore Tim Little has emerged into a solid slot receiver.
