Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

    Pryor-to-Moore Strikes Again
Raiders Win Game Punctuated by Big Plays,
    Turnovers and Big Hits, 52-26

Where to begin with this wild, wacky, totally messed up game? The 10 combined turnovers? The Pryor-to-Moore connection that's elevating both players up the ranks? Or the pass defense containing Drew Brees sorta-kinda-maybe-somewhat?

Terrelle Pryor threw another 4 TD game, hooking up with Denarius Moore 3 times for scores. One came on perhaps the best ball this young QB has thrown yet. A perfect strike to Moore in stride for a 80-yd TD.

Denarius has much to smile about this season.
He has over 1,200 yards receiving and 10 TD in 10 games

Another nice play came when the corner blitz flushed Pryor out of the pocket. Heyward-Bey had a clue and sprinted towards some open field as he extended what was supposed to be a short slant route. Pryor got enough space to set his feet and deliver the ball towards the open space. Bey actually caught it, and then his speed took over from there, carrying him into the end zone. He put up his first 100-yd day on the season.

The running game (sorta) contributed even. McFadden had 109 yards, albeit on 29 carries, and 2 scores. Sproles was more effective, 103 yards but on just 20 carries. Brees ended up with over 400 yards passing. He aired it out 49 times as he tried to bring the Saints back.

The Raiders defense must have been mad after the loss to the Ravens. Either that or they learned a few things watching a real defense go to work. Sproles fumbled the ball three times thanks to some solid tackling, and they managed 3 INTs off Brees for six takeaways. Tyvon Branch picked off 2 passes as he finally saw some action. Ron Bartell picked off a pass, despite not starting. "I guess he just has a nose for the football. We might have to go nickle more just to get him out there roaming the field, "Coach Lyle spoke.

McFadden put the ball on the ground twice himself and Pryor threw 2 INTs, both to LB David Hawthorne.

Brees did throw 2 TDs as Sproles and Moore both had 100 yards receiving (Sproles had 150, and 250 yards from scrimmage total). Colston racked up 90 yards of his own.

Moore had 173 yards and 3 TDs (on 5 receptions). Bey picked up 121 yards. Pryor completed just 53% of his passes - a number he seems to be settling around as the Raiders become more aggressive with the passing attack. Lamar Houston picked up 2 sacks in his second game as starter, replacing the disappointing Evertte Brown at DE. Richard Seymour had no tackles, but he recovered a fumble for a TD.

The win gets the Raiders back to .500 at 5-5 on the season. The entire AFC West is 5-5, in fact. The Chiefs are the hottest team in the division, winning their last 3 games.

Of course, the real questions are: Can the Raiders put some wins together? Can they put together a few good games in a row? Can the defense actually stop someone without relying on turnovers? Can Terrelle Pryor avoid mistakes and continue to make plays?

Notes: Denarius Moore expressed no disappointment about not being named AFC Offensive Player of the Week, saying, "That stuff doesn't matter. I helped the team win and excited the fans...That's good enough for me..." LB Philip Weaver is set to return next week...could create some 'interesting' situations in the linebacker depth when he does...

I guess the real Raiders can't stop the run either LOL.

BJGE with 7.1 y/c...Palmer sucks in real life too. They should put Pryor in!

        Raiders Fold Under Bengals' Pressure
        Offense Falters, Gets Injured
        Raiders Lose 26-10

Last week was a major head fake, what with the Raiders looking like they could actually produce offense and generate turnovers.

...Not fail to produce offense and give up takeaways...

Terrelle Pryor struggled again, throwing 2 INTs and completing 50% of his passes. The running game produced a TD, but also lost both McFadden and Taiwan Jones during the game. Jones should return next week, but McFadden is out with a serious injury. Again.

It's too bad, because the run game might could have kept the Raiders in this. McFadden posted up 4.7 yards per carry before the injury and Taiwan Jones scored the rushing touchdown.

It is becoming clear that if Denarius Moore doesn't strike, Pryor is at a loss to utilize his other options. It doesn't help that Heyward-Bey continues to drop balls for inexplicable reasons or that Brandon Myers is inconsistent or that anyone else on the WR depth chart is essentially a waste of space at this point.

The offensive line did not help either. Pryor was sacked 5 times and pressured often. Blitzes slashed through with ease and the front four got strong push.

Andy Dalton, on the other hand, stood strong and found his receivers. The secondary is reverting back to its horrendous play, Dalton completed 70% of his passes with 2 TD and 0 INTs. The Raiders did get 5 sacks, but they didn't seem to phase the 2nd-year QB.

Gresham did the big damage and TEs are something of an issue as the LBs are not great in pass coverage, especially the outside linebackers. Any routes that wondered into McClain's zone were defended well.

No forced fumbles for McClain this time and Greg Jones actually led the defense in tackles with 9. Demorrio Williams picked up 7 tackles. Nice to see the other LBs actually participate in the defense at least. OLB Wheeler is expected to return as well.

The loss puts the Raiders 5-6, one game behind the Chargers and Broncos. The Chiefs also lost, snapping their winning streak. The Raiders face the 7-4 Browns at home next week.

        Injury Report:
The Raiders placed Darren McFadden on injured reserve with a forearm fracture...Philip Wheeler returns to practice this week and is cleared to play...Jacoby Ford is expected to return next week...

        Notes:
Raiders signed HB Chris Ivory to fill McFadden's spot...Ivory is expected to start next week against the Browns...There have been a few reports saying the Raiders may adopt the 3-4 as the team has some decent depth at LB, now that the whole unit is healthy...

And an in-season change to 3-4? Would you move Seymour to DE?

I feel bad for Taiwan. He is buried on the depth chart, has a few good outings with McFadden out (and even as his backup), then McFadden goes down again and Ivory is signed to replace him. Haha, tough break.

Heh - might be another timeshare situation. Perhaps something like Ivory in the I-formation and Taiwan in Singleback, Shotgun, and Near. Ivory does not look like a pass catcher. Plus, if Ivory struggles (he's slow but powerful, not sure how that will translate in Madden - though it was okay in M12 with Blount until he got TOO slow), Taiwan is next man up. So it's not all bleak

In the 3-4, Seymour would probably be the DE that never gets sacks *cough*...er I mean the RE like Ngata is for Baltimore. Houston would probably stay as the LE. Carter is the one I'm not sure what to do with. Maybe bring him in as RE on passing formations (like Dime, 3-3-5 nickle, etc)

I think Ivory may fit very well into the Raiders' system. He wasn't a very good fit for the Saints. Give him atleast 15 carries....

Game is in progress, but oh yeah, he's getting his share. He's got 15 carries and it's mid-3rd quarter. Not as much of a time share as I anticipated because he's having a day, so I'm leaning on him until they can stop him.

Ivory's First Day Excites as Raiders
                  Win 40-10

"The offense made too many mistakes. We won, but it wasn't as clean as the score makes it look. Four turnovers is just not acceptable, " Coach Lyle spoke after the game.

The team did indeed commit 4 turnovers, 2 on Pryor interceptions as he forced the ball to Moore on both of them and on both CB Joe Haden came away with the football.

The other two turnovers were on fumbles by the 2nd and 3rd running backs on the depth chart. Howling fumbled after making a good play on a screen pass and Taiwan Jones coughed it up on a big hit after picking up a first down late in the game.

The touchdown Pryor threw came in the first quarter on a slant to Darius Heyward-Bey. Moore did rack up 10 catches for 120 yards, so Haden's coverage mostly took away the deep threat.

The story of the offense, though, was Chris Ivory in his first day as a Raider. Ivory toted the rock 26 times for 144 yards and a TD late to help put the game out of reach. His performance on the ground was by far the best the Raiders have had this season. Ivory also made a few receptions.

Defense was the other story. The team switched to a 3-4 alignment, and the coach dailed up aggressive play all game long from the linebackers. The result was a harried David Garrard all game long, including 5 sacks and 3 INTs, one of which was a pick-six for Terrance Newman.

The Browns were forced to abandon the run early on as the Raiders got out to a 20-3 lead, which was 27-3 by the 4th quarter. This allowed the defense to settle into a pass rush mode and come from every angle. Rolando McClain picked up another sack and Lamarr Houston was responsible for two more.

The Raiders pass protection was better, giving up just one sack and only occasional pressure on Pryor.

"It felt great to be a part of the game plan and to have the team count on me. I was told that it might be a split day for me and Taiwan [Jones] but then they kept calling my number and I kept wanting to move the ball and punish some defenders, " Chris Ivory commented.

The win takes the Raiders back to .500 with a 6-6 record. However, this win one-lose one type pattern is not likely to be enough to go the playoffs. The Raiders must find some kind of consistency down the stretch. What ever issue Terrelle Pryor is having with shifting focus away from Moore has to be resolved.

Nice debut for the 3-4, not to mention Ivory. Hard to lobby for more Taiwan after that.

Are you going to rotate Seymour to LE some? Try to balance out the RE... issues.

Seymour might go to LE some. He did well as the "Ngata Tackle", though.

I'm considering putting him at NT. He might be better at it than Kelly, and is closer to his DT role in the 4-3, and no "issues" with the NT.

Ivory was amazing - it's like everything "clicked" with him back there. We'll see if it keeps up.

Denarius Moore is up to 25K experience now. Terrance Newman had 10,000 experience after this game for whatever reason.

Raiders Practice Hard Amid NFL Ruling

Similar to what happened to Ravens FS Ed Reed, the NFL attempted to suspend LBs Rolondo McClain and Greg Jones for next week's pivotal game against the Broncos. The appeals dropped the suspensions, much like the Reed case.

"That is ridiculous - to suspend our players. What about the injuries to our LBs? What about to McFadden? What about to Ford? It's horrible that defenders are held to a different standard, " Coach Lyle spoke.

This interjection by the league comes amid a week of practice in preparation for more than just a basic grudge match against Peyton Manning and the Broncos, but a game that has major implications in the AFC West division race as well as the AFC Wildcard chase.

The Chargers lead the division at 7-5 with both the Broncos and Raiders sitting at 6-6. In the Wild Card race, there's just too many teams to mention. Pretty much the rest of the AFC is in that hunt. As such, this is a big game for both teams.

The defense is getting prepared for Peyton Manning while Denarius Moore is getting all the film he can on Champ Bailey.

"This league is tough. One day, you're facing a young stud like Haden and the next you face an older vet who's still getting it done in Champ [Bailey], " Moore commented.

Moore had 7 catches for 89 yards in the first game, but that was before the sudden chemistry with Terrelle Pryor. Though Haden got two picks, Moore put up 120 yards. Darius Heyword-Bey will need to show up. He was essentially a non-factor in the first meeting.

In the earlier meeting with the Broncos, the Raiders gave up 350 yards and 3 TDs to Manning and lost a 16-13 lead to fall 28-16. The Raiders hope having Terrelle Pryor and being at home will change things around. The 3-4 emphasis on defense will get a big test while Chris Ivory will likely be looked to for more ball control as the Raiders held the ball for 40 minutes last week against the Browns.

                              Pryor, Defense Persevere
Raiders Get Revenge, Win Key Game 27-12

It was an ugly affair for Terrelle Pryor. Either he was overly excited and had too much nerves, or the rain - and the Denver pass rush - just messed with him. Whatever the case, he completed just 40% of his passes. However, he made some big throws and avoided the interception.

It didn't go so well for Chris Ivory either. He ran hard all game, but couldn't find a ton of room throughout. He was also held out of the end zone, though he had a few good runs called back on holding penalties - something that occurs all too frequently for this offensive line.

The offense played very sloppily in the first half. Two fumbles lost, again one each by Howling and Taiwan Jones, put the team in a bind early. Pryor was off target, and the run game struggled. This led to three and outs and bad defensive field position. But the defense stood strong, including a stand inside the 5 yard line to force a chip shot FG. Broncos lead 6-0 for much of the 1st half.

Then Pryor got the ball moving a bit and Ivory found some room in the passing game. Later in the drive, he hit Moore on a short slant and Moore fought his way into the end zone to put the Raiders up 7-6.

Later in the second quarter, Pryor caught to Broncos in a Cover 2 and hit Moore in the hole along the sideline for a long pass play. The next play was a TD to Criner on a post, catching Broncos in a zone blitz. Pryor waited and zipped the ball past the dropping defensive lineman to lead Criner into the open field.

Starting the 2nd half, Manning found some rhythm. The Raiders tried to mix in some zone, hoping to confuse the All-Pro QB, but that backfired when Terrance Newman gambled in pass defense, missed, and let Decker head up field for a big play. Manning then hit Tamme for a score that Rolondo McClain is just a touch too late on, letting Tamme squirt the ball across the plane for the score.

The Broncos' pass rush was unrelenting. They got Pryor for three sacks and continued to hit him all game long. Pryor, however, rolled out on a bootleg and kept going up field. Denver had sent the LBs on a blitz and Pryor ran towards Heyward-Bey, who can come across on his route. Heyward-Bey made a block on Champ Bailey, who sniffed out Pryor's scramble, and Pryor cut inside off the block into the open field. He would score a 63-yard touchdown run. That put the Raiders up 21-12. Janikowski would add a 51-yard FG thanks to a solid Jacoby Ford punt return and go up 24-12 into the fourth quarter.

The Raiders offense stalled out as the team was trying to hold the ball and get Ivory going. There was some success, but still, nothing consistent on the ground. The Raiders defense stood up as strong, stopping Manning from getting into a rhythm with a pass rush of their own. Greg Jones, in particular, was big as the outside linebacker picked up 3 sacks. Rolondo McClain added a sack late, and Lamarr Houston picked up one.

After some failed fourth down attempts by the Broncos and punts by the Raiders, the Raiders got the ball with under 2:00 left. Stephens-Howling made up for his fumble earlier to a degree with a hard 6-yard run on a draw play to seal the game. He maintained his balance after a hit was fought for the first down marker.

"This is a huge win, and we got it at home - so the fans know we are for real. We want the postseason and this is a big step towards it, " Pryor spoke after the game.

The defense put up another solid performance. They didn't generate any turnovers in this one, but they kept the Broncos receivers covered most of the time and gave up just one big play. This in spite of the team failing in their ball control goal, holding the ball just under 25 minutes.

The win, combined with the Chargers' loss, puts the Raiders in a 1st place tie in the AFC West at 7-6. The Raiders next face the 5-8 Chiefs at the Coliseum. While the Chiefs have a bad record, they'd love nothing more than to play spoiler to the hopes of their archrival. There will also be bad blood from the "cheap hits" the Chiefs believe the Raiders delivered...not to mention that 4th quarter rally from Pryor.

Both Taiwan Jones and Larod Stephens-Howling will see their playing time reduced due to consistent fumble issues. Jacoby Ford is responsible for kick and punt returns while Marcel Reese becomes the 3rd down running back. TE Richard Gordon will take fullback duties when Reese is at halfback.

Yeah, he's at Quick development now. He's got 29,447 XP and needs 7 catches in the next three games to reach his season catches goal (100). So, barring injury, he should get there.
