    Fields in settling in well.

Peterson is unstoppable. Feel your pain there. Hate seeing Levy on the Vikings.

Revis out for the year.. haha! Was Revis out last year too in your franchise?

      Offense Shutdown, Gives Ball Away
      Defense Competitive but Turnovers
      Doom Raiders 29-12

This game was a rude awakening for the team. Not only do the road woes continue, the offense was just terrible all game long. Even early on when the defense was stopping the Patriots, the offense could not score touchdowns, having to settle for four field goals in the first half.

Eventually, as can be expected, the Pats offense got on track. Peyton Hills continued to pound the ball at the defense, and while he didn't break any big runs, the relentless attack eventually wore down the defense.

Schaub was laser accurate, completing 17 of 23 passes on the day to add to the problems on defense.

But the turnovers continue to be a problem, both getting and preventing them.

"I don't know what the issues is with the takeaways. It's like they suddenly forgot how to intercept the ball. About the only hope is a hard hit for a fumble, " one analyst spoke.

Terrelle Pryor looked like the inexperienced quarterback he is in this game. He threw 3 INTs, no TDs and completed just 44% of his passes for a 19.8 rating.

The running game continues to provide no help. Both Ivory and McFadden looked terrible. Coach Lyle already confirmed that Taiwan Jones will get the start. This game certainly will do little for McFadden to earn his way off the trading block, nor is Ivory proving to be a power back alternative.

Quinterrius Fields got a sack, but then left the game with a serious injury. Olsen picked up a sack and a forced fumble, which was recovered by Fields.

Before the collapse in the 4th quarter, the Raiders were ahead 12-10 in a hard-hitting grinding affair. Then, perhaps fatigue set in or simply the Patriots being themselves, the game got out of hand.

Even then, the defense held on a late 2-pt try to keep the game at 16-12. Then Pryor threw his 3rd pick. Defense held to make it 19-12, still giving the Raiders a chance. But then a failed drive and a fumble later led to 10 more Patriots points.

      Injury Report:
DE Quinterrius Fields is expected to miss the next 6 weeks with a broken collarbone. The team has decided not to put him on injured reserve. Lamarr Houston was named as starter in Fields' place.

      Transactions:
Raiders released CB Viliami Lealuga and signed DE Antwan Applewhite.

LT Jared Veldheer signed a 4-year extension worth $21.2 M

Rumors abound of the Raiders working on a deal with the Packers involving Darren McFadden. No potential terms were released but with the Packers seeking a run game, this seems like it might have possibilities.

Sources also say that the Raiders are looking to acquire a couple rookies low on the depth charts of other squads while continuing to scout halfbacks that might come out in this year's draft.

        Breaking News: Raiders Shakeup Backfield
Picks, Ivory and McFadden traded. Taiwan Jones remains

Tired of the constant lack of production from the backfield, the Raiders went on a shopping spree, heating up the week 4 news wires with trades.

-First was HB Chris Ivory traded to the HB-loving Panthers for WR Joe Adams. Adams is a work in progress as a WR, but seems to have good ball carrier skills and is comfortable in the return game. He'll likely get the KR/PR duties, freeing up Jacoby Ford and Taiwan Jones from the added injury risk.

What is interesting is that this trade now gives the Panthers 6 HB on their roster...

-Next the Raiders made a splash by acquiring highly-touted HB Julio Caulder.

        Raiders trade:
        2014 1st round pick
        2014 4th round pick

        Seahawks trade:
        HB Julio Caulder
        2014 5th round pick
        2014 7th round pick

Julio was a top-ranked prospect with a large following in last year's draft. The Seahawks valued him, but also ranked him as just the 3rd best back in their system.

"It's a gamble, but I think Caulder is the kind of back we are looking for. One that can go both inside and outside with equal ability, " Coach Lyle spoke.

Scouts grade Caulder (77) almost as highly as McFadden (81). Many think he will fit right in with the power run direction the team is working towards.

-The Raiders weren't done. There were three teams with high interest in McFadden. So the Raiders explored those leads. They settled on a package with Tampa Bay:

        Raiders trade:
        HB Darren McFadden
        CB Ron Bartell
        2015 2nd round pick

        Bucs trade:
        2015 1st round pick
        CB Anthony Gaitor
        LT Brian Comardelle

The big draw here is the 1st round pick the next season. While the Raiders had to give up their 2nd in 2015, it's a trade up of 40 projected spots, and, unless the Raiders finish with the worst record and the Bucs the best, represents a significant move up in any case.

Bartell fell out of favor with his early season performance as a coverage defender. While he'll help on run support, he seems to get beat by any WR with good route running or speed.

Gaitor and Comardelle are prospects at their positions. Comardelle is a young LT that is extremely strong (94 STR) and has excellent impact blocking (87). The team feels some work on his technique and awareness will make him a tackle to build the line around in the near future.

Gaitor is a 3rd-year corner that is more comfortable in zone coverage, has solid pursuit, and tackles decently for a cornerback. The team will likely use him in Dime/Dollar/Quarter packages while they work on his coverage and play reading techniques.

Meanwhile, this clears the way for rookie CB Shaquille Carillon to start. Basically, Carillon is a much faster and younger version of Bartell with more upside. Paris Cooper, at least for now, remains the nickle corner, but as his man coverage improves, that could change.

As far as the HB situation goes, the team will likely sign a free agent to fill out the HB ranks, and they are expected to continue scouting HBs in the draft. Santez McKenzie is the current top name on the Oakland draft board.

Meanwhile, Taiwan Jones will start as promised by Coach Lyle. Jones doesn't have high expectations for success in a power run scheme, but he's produced the best yards per carry in the last couple seasons. Caulder will likely get some time as well, with full time coming as soon as they work on his ball carrying. Fumbles were the issue with him, and the team will look to modify his ball carrying habits, along the lines of what the Giants did with Tiki Barber to solve his fumbling issues.

Now that's a strange looking Patriots team.

          Traded McFadden?! *head explodes*

Raiders did some serious dealing. Talk about a revamped backfield..

Heh, yeah, the Pats kinda got weird after the offseason. Must be the Brady retirement?

Yep, McFadden's injury problems...I mean he's gone. Signed Brandon Bolden (ex-Pat) to fill the empty HB slot. Pats got rid of Slaton as well...I wanted him but the Cowboys won that trade war.

Your boy Taiwan is getting the call, though. And Reece is still here.

What is really strange is that they all (the new HB and Jones) only have 600 yd expectations for 20 K XP (WTF...this XP system...)

So if they all get it, that's some serious XP just from that. I ALMOST kept McFadden for that reason (he had 600 yd expectation), but I can't turn down having an extra 1st, especially if we do make the playoffs and Bucs are top 10 as projected.

The weird Pats have to be a product of the Brady retirement. He stayed in my franchise, so it must be somewhat random.

600 yards!? Even for the glass man (Run DMC), that would be a given.

Guess it's time for me to hit the campaign trail again for Taiwan! I would say give Reece a shot, but with Jones/Caulder/Bolden, there are probably too many mouths to feed.

Why would the Bucs even want McFadden? Don't they have Doug Martin and Lagarette Blount?

They don't have Blount, but yeah, they have Martin and, yeah, I was shocked that they were interested.

I guess they don't like Royster, but still...

I don't know. Only think I can think of is their "Balanced" preference for HB. Maybe McFadden's spd/agi/acc tipped. Otherwise, they are a "Power Run" team like Oakland, so I would think they'd see McFadden's OVR as 81 like Oakland does...

Yeah, plus Reece is a nice weapon in Twin TE formations. 90 SPD with decent hands and routes is nasty in a TE.

Re: McFadden...you'd think 600 would be a given, but last year, he had 513 yards...combo of 3.7 y/c and that much missed time.

For whatever reason, I have no idea why, Taiwan Jones is just better. The line blocks better for him (see it even in practice), I don't know.

BTW, more fun with XP system...if Caulder gets like 70 yards, he gets 1000 XP! One TD reception - another 1000! LOL - He's gotten carrying up a few points just from the XP he had pre-trade and one practice.

Could be a serious 2-headed monster.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

                      Mistakes Again...
                      Giveaways Allow Chargers to Rally,
Waste Strong Defensive Effort, Lose 17-13

                      Fumbles, fumbles, fumbles.

Seems like no matter who is in the backfield, there are just too many fumbles coming from the Raiders halfbacks. Both halfbacks had fumbles that were lost and Pryor threw an interception.

Another 4th quarter collapse for the team, in which they had the Chargers shut out 13-0. But then the mistakes came and turned it around.

Caulder got most of the carries as Taiwan Jones left with an injury. The rookie made a game effort, picking up 100 yards, 3.9 per carry.

The defense has been different all year, especially with the linebackers. Not all bad, but the production levels are different for sure. This time, Ash was the top linebacker in tackles with 7 and he picked up a sack.

However, a realignment in the linebackers might be in the making. Lyle switch Olsen and McClain - putting McClain as the strongside linebacker with Olsen in the middle. Olsen's more rounded coverage might help defend the TE better and McClain is best in zone, and he may get more opportunities to blitz as well.

But what Lyle is most upset with is the turnovers.

"Second damn game in a row we give it away late and mostly because of turnovers. We should be 4-0 right now, and it makes me angry to think about it, " Lyle commented.

The loss puts the Raiders at 2-2. They stay home and host the 0-4 Miami Dolphins.

Once you've played enough games, I'd be interested to hear how you think your second slider set stacks up to your first.

I had fun rebuilding the Raiders in M12. This year its the Vikings rebuild project but I am spending a lot more time tweaking than playing so far....

Well, hopefully, there's very little difference as that's the goal. Just want to "clean up" the run game (i.e. make it useful and make running between the tackles not a complete was of time), and get some more "questionable throws" and some that are just plain off/thrown away from QBs like we see sometimes on Sundays.

                            It's Beautiful When It Works
                            Pryor, Moore, Caulder - Glimpse
of the Future? Raiders Win 37-7

The Raiders got it going on all facets of the offense, and most notably, another strong effort from Caulder. When Coach Lyle said Caulder would get a full workload, he wasn't kidding. The rookie HB got the call over 30 times and scored 2 TDs on the ground.

The rest was familiar. Pryor-to-Moore. That combination was record breaking last year, and maybe it will get back on track this year as well. Moore picked up a dozen catches for over 100 yards and 2 TDs.

The defense didn't have much work to do as the Raiders owned the ball for 44 minutes. The time the defense was out there, they had trouble with Reggie Bush, giving up almost 5 yd per carry to him, but for some reason, the Dolphins abandoned him early, trying to air it out with rookie QB Robb Bell.

That didn't go so well. The rookie's confidence was already shaken by starting off 0-4, and the Dolphins' play callers did him no favors in this one. They asked the rookie to stand in and take hits while trying to throw it deep down field. The Raiders can tell you, that doesn't work particularly well, at least not without trying to get some rhythm going.

Cornerback Shaquille Carillon got his first career interception in the game, and Michael Huff came away with an errant deep ball.

Houston and Seymour each picked up a sack, but the pass rush was mostly forcing the rookie to throw too early.

In all, Bell completely just 33% of his passes for less than 100 yards.

"I wish we could bottle this, " Rolando McClain commented, "If we could play like this every week, we'd be an elite team."

Taiwan Jones did get some playing time and looked solid this week, a bounce-back game after his terrible showing last week.

The Dolphins came out strong, looking like they'd be gunning for their first win of the season. Bush was elusive, forcing the defense to chase him around, and the passing game benefited from the gambling the defense had to do because of the run. Dolphins scored somewhat easily on their opening drive, making the Raider faithful nervous.

But then Caulder shoved the ball down the field to set the tone for the whole game. He keyed the drive that gave the Raiders the tying score, and the team never looked back.

Of course, no Raiders game is complete without a lost fumble. This time, it was Reece, although he got slightly injured on the play, perhaps helping cause the fumble.

The win puts the Raiders at 3-2, back into a tie for first place in the AFC West as the Chargers lost. The Chiefs are close by at 2-3.

Raiders travel to Chicago to face the Bears next week.

                            Injuries:
Joe Adams is healthy and should play next week.

Richard Gordon dislocated his elbow and is expected to miss the next 5 weeks. This puts the TE position in flux when Reece is playing fullback. As a result, the team cut RT Jordan Black and signed TE Matthew Mulligan. Mulligan will start as he's considered a powerful run blocker with decent catching skills.

                            Contracts:
DE Lamarr Houston agreed to a 4-year extension worth $13.3 M.

                            Notes:
49ers CB Courtney Callender won Defensive Player of the Week, prompting one Raiders official to quib, "Well, at least we were right, he is good..." Week 5's game was the first time this season the Raiders won the turnover battle...

                            Scouting:
HB Santez McKenzie remains high on the team draft board...but questions about him truly fitting into a power run scheme are mounting. "He lacks the power you typically want...he seems like Taiwan Jones...and we already have one of those..." Another scout argued, "He might have skills like [Taiwan] Jones, but I bet this kid has more upside. Real question is...is he better for us than Caulder?"

FB Conrad "The Hammer" Ratliff is causing a stir with his hard-hitting blocking for Penn State, but one scout was not impressed... "He's being compared to Vontae Leech? Seriously? What are they looking at? He lacks any real strength and will not translate to the next level."

A quarterback has been sighted on the Raiders' draft board. QB Blane Giles is making some waves in the war room with his lighting-fast speed. "I think he's RG3 part 2..." one scout spoke. Scouts put his speed at 94 and feel he can, at the minimum, hit the short routes consistently. "If I was Terrelle Pryor, I'd pray that either something happens to his kid or that I have a hell of a season..." an analyst remarked.

The Raiders love scouting unheraled, low projected kids, and they found another one to fall in love with. LG Aaryn DePriest from UCLA has gotten little press, but Raiders scouts think he's a big, strong kid with a mean streak for run blocking. Scouts put his raw strength at 97 and his impact blocking ability at 92...

                              Pryor Battles, Caulder Carries, Defense
                              Stiffens. Raiders Win 26-10

Road wins like this can build confidence, especially given how the Raiders have struggled on the road. The defense stood strong all game long, especially against Matt Forte, forcing Cutler to have to do most of the work. The defense grabbed 2 INTs, both by rookie corners Cooper and Carillon who were both given the nod to start.

Spirits were dampened, however, as they saw Denarius Moore having to be helped to the locker room. Moore refused to leave the bench with his team battling, but was in clear pain as he left the field.

His top target gone, Pryor clearly struggled to find rhythm. Not having a dynamic TE as well put the offense back to basics. The team took some deeper passes, but most were trying to keep the play more conservative and lean on Caulder. One of those deep shots came late in the 2nd quarter. Pryor threw one deep to Ford. The safety was too aggressive with his coverage and Ford grabbed the pass and took off for an 81-yd score. This was the only TD by Pryor on the day. He had another chance, again to Ford, but the throw was too long.

The second half and especially the fourth quarter belonged to the running game. Caulder's bruising style of running eventually wore down the active Bears' defense. The Raiders made the defense have to chase the ball carriers to make tackles, using a lot of outside runs, and then would attack back up the middle to keep the defense honest, and draws to try to take advantage of any run blitzes.

As the defense lost a step here and there and couldn't stand up to Caulder as stoutly as before, the team brought in the fresh and speedy legs of Taiwan Jones to keep up the ground attack. Jones' speed turned Caulder's 5 and 6 yard runs into first down gainers to keep the clock going.

Janikowski missed a 56-yard FG attempt just wide on the team's first possession in the quarter, but the clock damage was done, draining 6 minutes.

Cutler threw his first INT on the ensuing Bears' drive, and the Raiders kept up with the ground game, mixing in some passes on 1st down here and there. One of those was a screen to Caulder for a first down, and more making the Bears chase and tackle and have to take Caulder's punishing runs.

The Raiders finished this drive off with a TD on a run up the middle by Caulder from 1 yard out. Caulder wound up with 136 yards on 32 carries, proving he can carry the load. He also caught 4 passes for 34 yards. Taiwan Jones ripped it in his 4th quarter closing carries, gaining 28 yards on 3 rushes, exploiting the fatigue caused by Caulder.

By contrast, Forte was stuffed for just 46 yards on 26 carries.

Cutler was in desperation mode and Cooper grabbed his first career INT on a deep pass that was overthrown due to the active pass rush of Tevin Ash.

Ash was moved to the left side and use as a DE in the base nickle formation. McClain also was DE on the right side in the personnel package. Ash grabbed both sacks and was relentless all game, helping shut down the passing offense.

That's been the way the linebackers have been used. Various packages trying to move them around and see where they might fit. It would seem the 3-4 is coming sooner than later, but right now, the base 4-3 is in effect.

Olsen and McClain are trying to find out how best to work together. McClain was on the weak side and forced a fumble from Matt Forte. Olsen lead with 8 tackles in the middle. The two will probably swap sides again to see how the trio work as Olsen-McClain-Ash, from weak to strong.

The Raiders' win snapped the Bears' three-game winning streak and started a two-game win streak for the Raiders. Week 7 holds a rematch between the Broncos and Raiders, this time at Denver. The Raiders won the first match up 34-24. Raiders hold a half-game lead over the Chargers, who were on the bye this week.

                              Notes:
There no penalties called in the game...WR Jacoby Ford was named the #2 WR with Mike Williams moving up to #1 and Juron Criner being #3 as well as occasionally playing TE...Speaking of TE, there is speculation of Reece being #1 TE and signed TE Matthew Mulligan becoming fullback...this would let Reece be dynamic over the middle and potential not hurt the run blocking too much...this may last even after Harper heals...making him the #2 though Gordon might become fullback...

                              Injury News:
WR Denarius Moore is out 3 weeks (ribs)...this injury marks the 5th player out with injury on the season, though Marcus Harper is expected to return to action next week...The five injured players is the most in the NFL, though a few teams have four injured players.

                              Elsewhere...
ATL: DE John Abraham placed on IR.

                              Scouting News:
The injury to Moore was a reminder to not overlook scouting for WR prospects. The team might have another to track.

WR Bryan Evans (Northeastern) is currently a high-5th projection and looks to combine very good speed with developed route running and ball skills.

Big loss with Moore out, but the new guy Caulder has really stepped it up.

Bet Reece could do some serious damage from the TE spot.

Always love reading your scouting reports on college players.
