Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

    Stage #2 - FA Signing

    Raiders' Signings:
    WR Mike Williams - 4 yrs, $10 M
    C Bryan Mattison - 1 yr, $750 K
    RG Jamey Richard - 2 yrs, $1.5 M

    League Signings:

CB Sean Smith to Colts - 5 yrs, $22.5 M
WR Michael Jenkins to Seahawks - 4 yrs, $10.6 M
QB Jason Campbell to Jaguars - 3 yrs, $9.72 M

    Twitter Reactions:
Lavar Arrington was positive, at least for Mike Williams, saying the Williams got a good contract, great city, and a team that wanted him.

Trey Wingo thinks the Jags overpaid to bring Campbell in.

    Stages #3 and #4 - FA signing

    No signings news...

Raiders draft board uncovers a few more prospects:

CB Shaquille Carillon might have top-end speed and be flexible enough to run both man and zone coverage. Projected Low 3rd round.

RG Andrew Shaw might be a worthy alternative of top offensive line target Cale Welch is selected early. Well-rounded blocker with solid size. Projected Low 2nd round.

    Stage: #5 - FA signing

    Raiders' Signings:
    RT Jordan Black - 1 yr, $1 M

    Major League Signings:
CB Antoine Cason to Texans - 4 yrs, $11.48 M
DT Alan Branch to Seahawks - 5 yrs, $22.5 M
    K Mark Nugent - 3 yrs, $5.67 M
HB Danny Woodhead to Packers - 4 yrs, $7.20 M
DE Jason Jones to Bucs - 4 yrs, $10.8 M
CB Tracy Porter to Broncos - 4 yrs, $7.6 M

    Other News:
QB Carson Palmer and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey were placed on the trade block.

    Stage #6 - FA Signings

    Raiders' Signings:
    LT William Robinson
    LG Chris DeGeare
    SS Emanuel Cook

    Major League Signings:
CB Brent Grimes to Broncos - 5 yrs, $40.8 M
WR Greg Jennings to Colts - 5 yrs, $48.0 M (sheez)
QB Vince Young to Browns - 4 yrs, $18.0 M
QB Donovan McNabb to Texans - 1 yr, $7.4 M
QB Tavaris Jackson to Dolphins - 4 yrs, $19.8 M (LOL)
DT Sedrick Ellis to Bucs - 5 yrs, $22.9 M
QB Matt Schaub to Patriots - 4 yrs, $37.6 M

    Stage #7 - Scouting

The Raiders had intended to make this a "linebacker draft", but the quality of linebackers coming out this year might force a change of strategy. There are just a few linebackers that have some combination of speed, tackling, instincts, and coverage that the team is looking for, let alone all of them together.

OLB Cedric Robins of Oklahoma remains on the top of the Raiders' board. He is one of those few that has most of what the team is looking for, according to scouts. Like many of the linebackers, even those that played under zone-heavy defensive schemes, coverage is not a strong point of this class.

OLB Austin Williams (UCLA) might be next man up if Robins is gone. He's pretty much the same. Main difference is that he hits like a ton of bricks, but has less fundamental technique.

MLB Jake Olson (UVA) is another choice, and he's actually not completely lost in coverage.

One thing for sure, the 'quality' of linebackers, at least if the scouts reports are correct, is going to make the team appreciate Rolando McClain all the more.

The corners aren't much better. There's more speed merchants, but, again, coverage and instincts seem to not be there.

"What are they teaching the kids down there? What good is a corner that can't cover?" One scout spoke, "At this rate, it might just be a class full of kick returners."

There is one intelligent Tampa 2 corner, Paris Cooper (Sam Houston). He's a very low projection for some reason, but he gets top marks for his zone awareness and play recognition.

The team did find speed in a very odd location. Defensive end. Quinterrius Fields from Fresno State is a blazing fast defensive lineman. Scouts at the combine made him run three times because they were certain the timing devices were off, but each time he ran the same. Fields is a speed rush - seems to be in the Dwight Freeney mold. He could be the team's first round pick as Seymour is going to move back inside with the team not looking at a 3-man front on defense.

      Coach's Comments

"Overall, we are pleased with how the draft turned out. I think a lot of teams were trying to figure out what to do with some picks and where to rank some of these kids. Some of our top targets were taken off the board and that was disappointing, but I think we got guys we like and can work with, " Lyle commented.

      Rumor Mill

-Marcel the TE? The Raiders are reported considering expanding Marcel Reese's role to 2nd TE in 2 or more TE sets...

-Brandon Myers is said to be on the trade block...

-Denarius Moore reportedly uttered "glad he's gone" when hearing of the Heyward-Bey trade...Moore denies the rumor.

-Pryor is the man in Oakland...Palmer traded and no QB drafted...or will a UDFA snatch it from the exciting but inconsistent QB?

-Chris Ivory challenged DE Fields to a race...and lost...Afterwards, Ivory is reported as saying, "Never again...getting beat by a lineman? That's sad."

Way to go getting Moore the record! That's a crazy amount of XP.

I hate seeing Brady retire. I'm nervous about that happening to me too..

The part about Fields at the combine had me laughing. So it's back to the 4-3?

Very entertaining offseason. Looks like a solid draft. Love the idea of moving Reece to TE.

          2013 Dawns!
          Raiders Expected to Make Playoffs
After Coming So Close in 2012

          Hall of Fame
          In:
          QB Tom Brady
          MLB Ray Lewis
          QB Peyton Manning

          Out:
          MLB London Fletcher
          WR Terrell Owens

          Preseason Signings:
          OLB Bryan Thomas
          RT Sean Locklear
          QB Sage Rosenfels
          DT Shalon Baker
          WR Antonio Barros

          Position Battles

QB - None expected. Rosenfels might grade out a point or two better, but Pryor is cemented. The trade of Carson Palmer proves that.

HB - Ivory might win out the job from McFadden. Ivory proved durable and was able to hold on to the ball, something McFadden and especially Taiwan Jones struggled to do.

FB - Reese is still #1, but will see an expanded role that started last season. This might create battles elsewhere as well as for Reese's backup.

WR - Moore is #1 and free agent signing Mike Williams is expected to be a solid #2, finally. Criner will try to win the slot job from Ford and preseason FA signing WR Antonio Barros, who doesn't even know which way to open the playbook.

TE - Rookie Marcus Harper will get the chance to win the starting job. Brandon Myers, should he even survive the whole preseason, is going to have to show he can actually be a threat downfield.

OL - LG is going to be competitive. A FA signing during the season last year, C.J. Davis will try to hold his starting job. He lost is due to excessive holding calls as RG, but will get a chance to battle with similarly talented LG's...at RT Sean Locklear was signed to compete for the starting job...LT, C, and RG are locked up by three very solid, young lineman in Veldheer, Wisniewski, and rookie Cale Welsh, respectively.

DL - At LE, Quinterrius Fields will compete for the starting job with Lamarr Houston. Fields may have a fight on his hand as Houston did do pretty well once named the starter - so much so that Andre Carter was not brought back...No battle at DT. Kelly and Seymour are locked in...No battle expected at RE as Matt Shaughnessy is given the chance to secure the job. Jack Crawford is not expected to push for playing time.

LB - This is where it gets interesting. Of all the places to find a good LB in a bad LB draft class, it had to be middle linebacker...Everyone knows McClain is going nowhere, so where does Jake Olsen play? Right now, he's vying for the strongside linebacker position, looking to hold of Bryan Thomas and Vic So'oto...of course, the weak side might be open if rookie Tevin Ash falters...Bryan Thomas is waiting there as well. And, of course, if there's a formation with 2 (or more) inside linebackers, Olsen will be looking for time there.

CB - Tyvon Branch is moving back to SS, much to the chagrin of Mike "16 tackles" Mitchell. Bartell and Newman will duel for #1 CB and rookies Paris Cooper and Shaquille Carillon will be dueling for nickle corner...at the minimum. Cooper graded out at 89 in zone coverage, so he might get the nod simply because of that if either Bartell or Newman falter.

FS - No battle here. Michael Huff is entrenched as #1 FS.

SS - Tyvon Branch might be the one to profit from Mike Mitchell's work. Branch is coming back to SS as the team looks to have at least 3, if not 4, solid enough corners. That means Branch might be the one to test drive the 46 defense first this preseason. Needless to say, Mitchell is going to be doing all he can to move Branch back to corner...or off the team.

K/P - No battle here. Lechler and Janikowski are still weapons in special teams.

KR - Jacoby Ford figures to win the job as long as he's healthy...and that might be why he will get either kick return or punt return duties, but not both...an effort to keep him healthy. Right now, the team will try out rookie CB Sam Woodfaulk (who will be trying to prove that he's more than just speed when the backups play in preseason), and Taiwan Jones, who'll be the #1 initially, as he's come close to breaking a return for a touchdown, and actually had one called back by one of Oakland's 200 holding calls last year.

PR - Ford will be punt return in the team's split-duty system in the return game. The team will try it out and see if it keeps Ford healthier and if the team can still get good return yardage.

3DRB - Marcel Reese was holding this down with McFadden on IR, but not that McFadden is back, this might be the way to exploit him while keeping him healthier. Ivory is an awful receiver (though he did his best), and McFadden (and Reese and Jones for that matter) are much better at the job.

          Player Progression
-Rolando McClain is already hitting the film room, looking to get the edge on the opposing offenses.

-Denarius Moore hit the practice field to work on reading the corner's coverage and beating press coverage, the one area of his game he wasn't happy with last year.

-Richard Seymour has been working on his tackling and especially trying to use more of his weight behind his tackles. He's also working on 'being basically unblockable'.

-Marcel Reese seems to be embracing the idea of being a TE. He's been working on his blocking. "I know that tight ends have to catch and block. I think I'm good on my hands, but you can never be too good of a blocker."

-Tyvon Branch isn't neglecting his coverage skills. In fact, he's been working more on awareness in space. "The 46 stuff, I can do that. I can already cover man, they didn't call many zones with me at corner and I got moved from safety to begin with. That told me something."

-Meanwhile Mike Mitchell was in the film room with McClain. "I've gotta beat Tyvon, Rolando, I hate to say it, but I hear you're good at zone - can you help a dog out?"

Hahaha yeah, it just kept piling up because I saw no need to mess with anything. I did get him the Superstar development and some other stuff - might as well.

Going to try the 46 actually. If that doesn't work out in preseason, probably the 4-3. I thought I would have to go back to the 3-4 because of the two starter-quality MLBs (if only you could change positions...) and the fact the 3-4 has the 2-4-5 and 1-5-5. But if Olsen does well at OLB and Ash on the other side - then Olsen/McClain/Ash is a trio I'd work with.

There's no 46 scheme to pick, though, so gonna use "Attacking 4-3" and set up 46 type player roles and see how those OVR jive with the production I see.

So glad you got rid of DHB. He was way too selfish to keep around with Moore being the rising star. Hopefully Mike Williams will pan out for you as that #2.

For some reason I thought it would have been hilarious if Olson had a twin named Ashley.

I think he's the Seattle one, I'll have to check though!

I ran the practice and he made catches even after taking hits, so hopefully that's a good sign.

I might have to trade for Tampa's though. I remember him in M12 in my Bucs franchise and he was my go to guy for the longest.

Alright. Having Mike Wallace leave in free agency leave him #2 for me, and man, he does perform like real life!

Also, if you're going for a Tight End, Mercedes Lewis of the Jags is pretty good for me to.

Emmanuel's on Washington now. Down on their depth chart, too. Going to have to watch that.

The Mike Williams I have is the Seattle one - Tampa still has there's.

Interesting, the Patriots put Steven Ridley on the block.

Wish the Redskins would put RG III on the block #wishful_thinking
That's okay, We'll turn Pryor into our version of RG III!

Ok. Got to work on mine now, testing my guy to replace Ben when Ben goes bye bye.
