New Tradition: Tulane Hall of Fame

        March 6, 2019
        New Orleans Times-Picayune

The Green Wave football program has introduced a new tradition. The team has implemented a "Football Hall of Fame", where players will be inducted if they meet certain qualifications at the end of their careers. It is not guaranteed that players will be inducted every season; most likely inductions will occur as they see fit. When they occur, induction ceremonies will take place during the Athletic Department's annual Spring Banquet.

At this year's Banquet, coach Kaelyn Willingham announced the inaugural HOF Inductees. Being the first HOF Class, this year's list will also include previous Tulane players under Willingham's tenure as HC, in addition to recent graduates. The inaugural class includes:

        QB Bryan Higgins
A 2-year starter at QB, Bryan Higgins led Tulane to arguably its greatest two-year run in school history. Under his direction the Green Wave won 25 games, 2 conference championships, 2 BCS bowls & a national championship. Higgins also finished the 2017 season as Heisman runner-up. Graduating this spring, he finishes his career near the top in total offensive yards & total TDs for a Tulane player, and will go down as one of the NCAAs greatest dual-threat quarterbacks. He threw for over 3000 yards, ran for over 3000 yds & amassed over 60 TDs.

        FB Fred Roach
Fred Roach graduated after the 2017 season, but did not do so without leaving a big mark. The fullback made his presence known in his 4-year career, as a blocker, runner & pass-catcher. He was a force in Coach Willingham's option offense, and could always be counted on to help keep the chains moving. Roach finished his career with over 1500 rushing yards, over 500 receiving yards & over 150 pancake blocks. He also added nearly 30 TDs.

        LG Nick Bradley
Nick Bradley was part of an offensive line that led to great success for the Green Wave offense. The 3-year starter racked up 199 career pancake blocks, gave up on 13 sacks, and was penalized only ONCE.

        RG Jeff Smith
Jeff Smith was a member of the same O-line as Nick Bradley, and was also a dominator upfront. Also a 3-year starter, Smith amassed 186 career pancake blocks & gave up only 10 sacks.

        DT Willie Ross
A 4-year starter for the Green Wave, Willie Ross was a fan favorite. The star defensive tackle made plays both on and off the field. On the field he controlled the trenches. Known for making big stops on 3rd down, and getting to the quarterback, Ross broke the Tulane career sack record this past season w/ 29.5. Off the field he was known for his philanthropy work, working with inner-city kids in New Orleans and helping out at local soup kitchens. Ross wore #93 his senior season after receiving the 93 Man of the Year Award in 2018.

        MLB Fred Arnold
Fred Arnold was a dangerous man over the middle, and was the textbook definition of "QB of the Defense." The 3-year starter spent his sophomore year at OLB before moving inside his junior year. And boy was he good at his job. Arnold had a nose for the ball, and was always at the point of attack. He finished his career this past January with over 200 career tackles, 42 TFL, 10.5 sacks, 2 INT & a touchdown. He was also an Academic All-American, graduating with a 3.9 GPA & a degree in Business.

        CB Charlie Smith
Charlie Smith graduated last year, and left as one of Tulane's best defensive backs. Smith was a true ball-hawk, and one of the best to ever do it in New Orleans. Part of a secondary that wasn't always great, he was the man Tulane counted on to make plays when it mattered most. Smith finished his career with 150 tackles, 20 TFL, 25 INTs & over 40 passes defended. Smith wasn't a big-name recruit coming out of high school (only a 3-star prospect), but was one of the biggest names when he left.

          Signing Day Complete

          March 18, 2019
          New Orleans Times-Picayune

While not a huge signing class for Tulane this season, there are some headline names to watch out for. The Green Wave Recruiting Class of 2018 only brought in 12 scholarship players, but among them are some players who could be key for the program down the road.

One of the big-name signees to watch out for is CB Sidney Walker. The New Hampshire native waited until very late to make a commitment, as he was also considering offers from Georgia & Nebraska. What made him sign on to the Green Wave was his ability to play right away, and in particular his interest in playing for Coach Willingham. He wants to be a winner, and his game in the defensive backfield is good enough to become one. He excels at all the traits you look for in a defensive back, and he is expected to compete for playing time right away. Another big name to watch is OL Charlie King. The 4-star prospect out of Washington, DC will compete for playing time right away, as Tulane lost 80% of its offensive line to graduation this year. While Coach Willingham is hesitant to start a freshman at LT, he will be in the running for that job.

Other players to watch out for from this class include OLB Jeff House, MLB Kevin Atkinson, & ATH Austin Preston. Preston will likely play QB during his stay in New Orleans.

Tulane agrees to Boise State, Texas series

            April 25, 2019
            ESPN.com

Tulane's non-conference schedule is gonna get tougher over the next few years. The school announced today that they have agreed to games with both the Boise State Broncos & Texas Longhorns. Tulane & Boise State have been two of the top mid-major football programs over the past few years, with both teams posting 10-win seasons & BCS Bowl berths. Both teams have also maintained coaching stability surprisingly, with Kaelyn Willingham & Chris Petersen manning each school, respectively. Both teams agreed to a home-and-home series that will likely take place between 2021 & 2024. Exact dates have yet to be determined.

Tulane has also agreed to a "conditional" home-and-home with the Texas Longhorns, which will likely be scheduled between 2022 & 2025. The term "conditional" in this sense means that both schools have agreed to 1 game exactly (though the location of that game is currently unknown), but will not schedule a 2nd game unless it benefits both schools. It is believed that the first game would be played in Austin, TX, with the conditional second game played in New Orleans.

In other scheduling news, both Tulane & Miami (FL) have agreed to scrap the second game of their home-and-home series, seeing as both schools will be conference mates in 2020. The game was set to be played this upcoming season, and it is unknown currently how Tulane will fill the void on their schedule.

Good point, but it depends on how the schedules shake out. If we only play one game, I'd rather it be in Houston. Halfway between Austin & New Orleans.

If we play two, then Idk yet.

                    C-USA, Sun Belt Propose Merger

                    May 31, 2019
                    ESPN.com

Leaders of both Conference USA and the Sun Belt Conference met this week to discuss a possible merger of the two conferences. While the Sun Belt sits at only 6 members strong right now, C-USA has 12, meaning a full-scale merger would go over the NCAA limit of 16 teams per conference. In this likely scenario, C-USA would likely give certain members of the conference the boot if they don't meet certain qualifications. Speakers of both C-USA & the Sun Belt declined to comment to ESPN.

According to ESPN college sports analyst Andy Katz, a proposed merger would likely only key members located in certain states & recruiting beds. He proposes the following:

Andy Katz: "A proposed merger of the following schools would make sense:

C-USA: UTSA, North Texas, Rice, Southern Miss, FIU, FAU, Louisiana Tech

Sun Belt: Texas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Arkansas State, Troy."

That proposal would leave C-USA members UTEP, UAB, Middle Tennessee State in the cold, as well as Sun Belt member Western Kentucky. Those schools would be forced to find new homes or risk independence. Or even worse: drop down to FCS.

C-USA is considering a merger after being raided by the American Athletic Conference for 5 of its members. Those schools are scheduled to leave in 2020. More news is expected to come soon.

                      2019 Schedule Released

Tulane's 2019 schedule has officially been released, and it looks to be an interesting one.

They open the season on a Bye, a first for the program since Kaelyn Willingham took over in 2012. Their first game of the year is a Week 2 road trip to Memphis. Tulane replaced the cancelled Miami (FL) game with Army, and the #19 Black Knights will open Tulane's home schedule in Week 3. That follows with back-to-back road trips: the first to nearby Baton Rouge for a rematch of last year's thriller w/ the rival LSU Tigers; the second to Champaign, IL for the 3rd-annual Honor Roll Game with the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Conference schedule then gets fully underway with Houston, UConn, SMU, Central Florida & East Carolina all at home. Temple, South Florida & Cincinnati are also road games in addition to Memphis.

For the second straight year, there will be no Pay-It-Forward Game. Tulane vows that that series will resume in 2020, so much so that they do not plan on scheduling an Honor Roll Game in 2020.

This will be Tulane's last year as a member of the American Athletic Conference. They will be moving to the ACC next year.

                      Week 1: BYE

                      Week 2: @ Memphis Tigers

Week 3: vs. #19 Army Black Knights

Week 5: @ Illinois Fighting Illini ("Honor Roll Game")

                      Week 6: BYE

                      Week 7: vs. Houston Cougars

                      Week 8: BYE

                      Week 9: @ Temple Owls

House-Party Fight Gets 4 Kicked Off Team

                          July 1, 2019
                          New Orleans Times-Picayune

Another incident has rocked the Tulane football program, this time an issue of "violence."

Four Tulane football players have been kicked off the team after it was reported that they participated in a fight at a house party not far from campus. Those players involved were HB Josh Williams, WR Stephen Randle, DE Randall Flowers, & OLB Blake Wright. No one was seriously hurt but three people were taken to the hospital for evaluation. From what the Times-Picayune was able to decipher, the four players attended a birthday party for a friend of one of the players, when things got out of hand. After an argument, punches were thrown between Josh Williams & one of the other attendees at the party. Before long, all 4 players were involved in a 10-person brawl. The fight continued outside into a nearby parking lot, where police patrolling the area broke it up. No one was seriously hurt and no arrests were made, but Coach Kaelyn Willingham responded quickly to the news.

Kaelyn Willingham: "We will not tolerate that level of foolishness in our program. NOT NOW, NOT EVER. These players have been immediately dismissed from the football team, and will likely face further punishment from the University. I want to apologize to those affected who were innocent, as we do not condone that type of behavior in our program."

Both Josh Williams & Randall Flowers were expected to contribute big-time to the team this upcoming season as seniors. But now both players have had their senior seasons taken away from them. They could transfer to FCS schools to finish their eligibility, provided they don't face any punishment from the NCAA. Stephen Randle & Blake Wright were expected to be role players at best & were only sophomores. They too could take the FCS route.

Without Josh Williams in the backfield, expect RS sophomore T.C. Pickens to pick up the load, as well as RS junior Eric Foreman. On defense Randall Flowers' loss is huge, as now the team has only junior Jason Huggins as a true veteran on the D-line. Expect a competition to begin in Fall Camp between freshmen Marque Dawson & D.J. Blalock, and sophomore Lee Perkins, as Coach Willingham looks for Flowers' replacement.

Tulane opens the season August 31 on the road @ the Memphis Tigers.

With the roster reloading from last season's many departures, the coaching staff is treating the 2019 Fall Game as an important one. The team has to replace numerous seniors and will likely be doing so with freshmen & sophomores. The most important spot is quarterback. Adam Barnes, Cam Jackson & John Moore are all competing for the chance to replace the great Bryan Higgins, and those are some huge shoes to fill. With the recent dismissal of RB Josh Williams, expect T.C. Pickens & Eric Foreman to get more touches this season. The offense also has to replace 80% of the offensive line, as RG Tramon Patrick is the only starter from last year to return (this year playing his normal position). The coaches are really high on true freshman Charlie King from Washington, DC, but will they let a freshman start at LT on Day One? Look for veterans Willie Berry & Carlos Tucker to compete for that spot as well.

On the defensive side of the ball, there are spots to be filled at defensive end, defensive tackle & linebacker. Jason Huggins & Eddie Cox return as the only experienced members of the D-line, and there are plenty of youngsters competing for the open slots. At linebacker the team has to replace last year's Bednarik Award Winner, Fred Arnold. While OLB Calvin Walker is currently slated to take his place, look for freshmen Kevin Atkinson & Christian Larsen to make a play there as well.

Here are the rules for the Tulane Fall Game:

                            Basics:
                            • No Game Clock
Play Clock will be kept by the coaches, and will count down from :15 once the players break the huddle.
                            • No Kickoffs
Each possession will begin from the 20-yard line.
                            • Each QB will be given 5 possessions on offense to work with. This will determine the duration of the game.
(In 2019 there are 4 QB's on the roster, but only 3 will play in the Fall Game. This year's Fall Game will last exactly 15 possessions.)
                            • Rules concerning downs remain exactly the same. 4 downs for a 1st Down.
                            • Turnover on Downs will result in the ball being placed back at the 20-yd line. NO punts.
                            • During each possession the offense will work out of the same formation on every play, unless the QB decides to audible. The QB's themselves will decide the plays (They wear wristbands.).
                            • After each QB has run through his 5 possessions, that will be the end of 1 "quarter."
                            • Breaks will be taken after each "quarter."
                            • The offense's objective is to "make plays"; the defense's objective is to "break plays".
                            • NO Overtime. When both sides have equal points at the end of regulation, the result is a tie.

                            Offensive Scoring:
                            • Offensive scoring works the same (6 pts for a TD, 3 pts for a FG).
                            • After each TD scored on offense, a 2-pt attempt MUST be attempted (from the 3-yd line). No XP's.

                            Defensive Scoring:

Defensive scoring will work as follows:
                            • 3 pts for an INT
                            • 6 pts for a "Pick Six"
                            • 2 pts for a forced fumble
                            • 3 pts for a forced fumble AND recovery
                            • 6 pts for a forced fumble AND recovery AND return for touchdown
                            • 2 pts for a sack
                            • 2 pts for a safety
                            • 1 pts for forcing Turnover on Downs
                            • NO conversion attempt will be attempted after a defensive score.

The side that has the most points at the end wins. The Fall Game will be used as a way for the coaches to do an in-depth analysis of the players & their knowledge of the playbook. The Fall Game will be televised on local TV.

QBs shine as Offense wins Tulane Fall Game

                              August 4, 2019
                              The Tulane Hullabaloo

It was a bright, sunny day in New Orleans, as the Tulane football team took part in the 3rd-annual Fall Game, held at the Practice Fields. The coaching staff came into the scrimmage looking to answer a few questions: Who would step up at quarterback? How will the O-line look? Which players would make statements on defense? For the most part, those questions appear to be answered, as the Offense put up a rather masterful performance en route to winning by 18. John Moore & Cam Jackson were your Players of the Game, as both QBs made great headway in the QB Race.

Adam Barnes led the 1st-string Offense, and the junior did just enough to make plays. While he was efficient throwing the ball (10/14, 109 yds), he did throw 2 INTs. The coaching staff also wished he took more chances downfield, as many of his pass attempts were checkdowns. T.C. Pickens was decent running the ball (65 yds & 1 TD), but he could've been better had the line opened up more blocks. Senior Chris Gandy was great in the receiving game.

Cam Jackson led the 2nd-team unit, as was lot more daring throwing the ball. He only completed 7/15, but for 201 yds & a score. Those included deep balls to Jason Eaton & Chris Davis, and a 30-yd screen pass to Eric Foreman. The coaches expected more out of Foreman running the ball, but again much of that could be attributed to the O-line.

All three quarterbacks played well in the scrimmage.

When 3rd-string QB John Moore came in to play the final period (only 3 quarters in this scrimmage), the game was still close. The Offense had made plays, but the Defense was doing enough to hang around. Moore changed all that. On his first series he threw a pick to Cameron Anderson, but he quickly forgot that, and led a 16-play drive on the ensuing series, resulting in a Michael Strong rushing TD. It was a turnover on downs on the next series but the final two ended in scores. Moore isn't known as an "electric" QB, but he took a read-option play 78 yards to paydirt (his only carry of the game). That put the Offense up 31-19, after failing the 2-pt attempt. At this point, the Defense could not win the Fall Game outright, but they could force a tie. John Moore said "Nuh uh." On the final play from scrimmage, he chucked a bomb to Joe Fernandez, and the HB/WR did the rest taking it 82 yards for the win. Another missed 2-pt attempt, and the game would end in a 37-19 victory for the Offense.

Kaelyn Willingham: "I thought the guys did good out there. I liked what I saw, but we still got room for improvement."

After the scrimmage the players were treated to a free dinner. For winning the game, the Offense was treated to a steak dinner, prepared by Chophouse New Orleans, one of the finest restaurants in town. After losing the game, the Defense was treated to a meal of "beans 'n wieners," prepared by the Tulane Student Union. The players will now have the week off before officially beginning in-season practice. Their first game of the year is August 30 @ Memphis.

Lee Perkins with the sack on Cam Jackson.

Chris Gandy made a few plays early in the game.

                                2019 Depth Chart Released

Following the Fall Game, Tulane has released its 2019 Depth Chart, which resolves a few key position battles.

In a surprise move, Tulane has decided NOT to name one single starting quarterback. Instead the coaches have decided that both Adam Barnes & Cam Jackson bring unique skill sets to the table, and thus BOTH will receive significant playing time in 2019. It will be the first time since 2014 that Tulane will operate a 2-QB Offense. Similar to the 2-QB system of 2014, there will be one "Smash" QB that specializes in the power running game, and one "Dash" QB that will specialize in the Spread attack. Barnes will assume the Smash QB role, while Jackson will be the Dash QB.

In other position battles, Willie Berry has won the starting gig at LT. Despite this, freshman guard Charlie King will see playing time this year. The rest of the O-line is set with junior Jason Cantrell, former JUCO transfer Mike Jackson, former RT Tramon Patrick playing his natural position at RG, and Erik Lane taking over Patrick's RT spot. On the D-line Jason Huggins & Lee Perkins have won the rights to the end spots, while Shelton Mason & Bernard Ross will alternate alongside Eddie Cox at DT. The linebacking corps has been rebuilt with juniors Tom Grier & Jason Muhammad, and senior Calvin Walker.
