Re: Denver A.M.
[If Zac Piper gets hurt again in 2018, Bronco fans will not get tortured by Jake Locker or or Tyler Bray. With time remaining on their contracts, both "backhoe" QB's have gotten a pink slip from GM John Elway.
In 2016, Montee Ball averaged 4.4 yards per carry while racking up 1,235 yards. He was a touchdown machine with a league- leading 17, had 7 runs of over 20 yards, was named the AFC Running back of the Year and went to his first Pro Bowl. He also got a nice contract extension. Then he got lazy. In 2017 Ball only rushed for 511 yards, his average plummeted to 3.1 yards per carry, he found the end zone only 4 times and had only one run longer that 20 yards. Accordingly, Ball was asked to re-work his contract. When he declined, Elway decided to bite the cap hit bullet and give Ball his walking papers. Also cut loose early was 2017 draft pick Pat Whirley, an OLB who saw limited action. In addition to those three early departures, the Broncos either did not offer a new contract to, or were unable to reach agreement with, the following players:
WR/KR Marc Mariani - despite Mariani saving the Arizona game with two kickoffs returned for touchdowns, the Broncos have decided to see if they can acquire a skilled return man who can also contribute in some other phase of the game. If that doesn't happen and Mariani is still available after the draft, he may be brought back.
FS Eric Hagg - refused his contract offer.
LG Kasey Studdard - did not receive an offer; may be looked at as a FA pickup later.
RB Brayden Lawson - did not receive an offer; may be looked at as a FA pickup later.
OLB Jonathan Casilas - did not receive an offer.
OL Barrett Jones - rejected the team's offer.

Re: Denver A.M.
All-Pro guard Varley Isom gives the Broncos a nice o-line upgrade.
Two years ago right guard Ricky Wagner went to the Pro Bowl in his first year as a Bronco. By the end of last season, he was fighting for a starting job. Fearing that situation might not resolve itself in camp, the Denver Broncos pursued free agent All-Pro Varley Isom, who, after failing to reach an extension agreement with the Falcons, became a free agent when the Falcons tagged Julio Jones. The Falcons' loss has become the Broncos' gain.
Last year almost nobody wanted running back Arian Foster. The Broncos did, but were so squeezed for cap space that they were unable to bring him aboard. With more cap ceiling with Jake Locker and Montee Ball off the payroll, Foster is going to get a chance to prove his nay-sayers wrong after signing a 1 year deal with Denver. With Ball and Brayden Lawson gone, Foster has an excellent shot at making the 53 man roster. How much work he gets will depend on how much gas he has left in the tank and what impact a year off has had on him.
The Broncos also pursued free agent QB Kirk Cousins, but he has signed with the Giants.Comment

Re: Denver A.M.
Big Ben Unretires
Back in black, or will he land elsewhere?
With the NFL's free agency period under way, a big name has come out of retirement to make himself available to an interested team. Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said he has missed the game so much, and at age 36 he believes he can still be a top-level signal-caller, that he wants to come back for another go-round. There is no news yet as to whether the Steelers would have any interest in a reunion.
Former player and current analyst Deion Sanders responded by tweeting "#BigBen must need more money for his defense attorney".Comment

Re: Denver A.M.
1/21: Allan DePriest, MLB, Penn St. | 6-1/241 | 84
Last year the Broncos wanted Jeremiah McCay as their defensive signal-caller of the future so much that they made a post-draft trade for him after he went to the Saints ahead of Denver’s second round selection. Then the Broncos signed Lawrence Timmons, and to get McCay on the field, Denver put him at the Sam. McCay excelled there, drawing comparisons to Von Miller, recording 14 sacks and finishing third in the AFC Defensive Rookie of the Year balloting. Needless to say, what was a temporary move has become a permanent one. Timmons has signed on for another 2 years with the Broncos, but that did not keep them from investing their first round pick in All-American and Big 10 tackles leader Allan “Preacher” DePriest from Linebacker U. While Timmons’ deal is for 2 years, at his age he may not have 2 years of play at a high level left in him, and retirement after the 2018 season has to be considered a possibility. The Broncos were not going to forego this opportunity when it presented itself. A similar one may not be there in the next couple of drafts, and DePriest can only benefit from not being under any early pressure to live up to his billing and from being able to hone his craft under the mentoring of Timmons.
3/21: Rasean Lunsford, RB, Mississippi St. | 6-0/219 | 76
This is where the Broncos had hoped to pick Iowa's Tony Gardea as their Plan B at quarterback despite Gardea being a projected 4th-rounder. Elway and the scouting crew saw more to him than others did. But, three picks ahead of the Broncos, the Steelers also thought Gardea was worth a third round pick. The brain trust regrouped quickly, selecting the player who was the top 4th-rounder on its board, rather than see him snatched from under the nose as well. Coming into the draft, Denver’s backfield consisted of Andre Wallace, Arian Foster and Exavier Shade. Wallace has the potential to become the Broncos’ bell cow, but he suffered two injuries during his rookie campaign and his durability has to be a concern. Foster will be a question mark until he straps on a helmet again after a year off, and Shade is more of a return specialist/change of pace guy than one you want to give a lot of carries to. Although Lunsford was in the top five in rushing in the SEC in each of his three years with the Bulldogs, some pundits would call this pick a reach. Elway & co. think Lunsford will later be reclassified as a hidden gem.
4/21: Avery Cross, CB, Boise St. | 5-11/189 | 73
In Denver's secondary, there is a sharp dropoff in talent at corner after nickel back Xavier Rhodes. And Aqib Talib is getting on in years as well. Cross is going to get a chance to compete for the dime corner spot right away, and his post-Talib future could have him at the nickel. He's a sounder tackler than most corners, meaning he could provide backup assistance at free safety as well.Comment
