        Game Notes
In Zac Piper's return from injury, he'll be facing one of the QB's selected ahead of him in the 2016 draft. Piper has already beaten San Diego's Wade Hancock, and now he goes head-to-head against Arizona's T.R. Stewart, last year's first overall selection. Despite have yet to win a home game, the Cards are a statistically better team than the Broncos. But Denver's stats have been compiled without Piper, who has a record of 9-2 in regular season games. And with Denver having a bye week in Week 6, he's had two weeks of practice to get ready.

        QB Comparison
Zac Piper - (first start) 2016: 98.4 rating, 281.5 yards per game
        T.R. Stewart - 76.9 rating, 122/222 (55%), 1407 YDS, 8 TD, 5 INT

        Rushing Leaders
        Brayden Lawson - 32-102, 3.2 avg., 0 TD
        Leo Nieves - 86-344, 4.0 avg., 1 TD

        Receiving Leaders
        Alshon Jeffery - 23-292, 12.7 avg., 1 TD | Mohamed Sanu - 20-262, 13.1 avg., 0 TD
        Markus Wheaton - 32-366, 11.4 avg., 1 TD

Piper Rusty, Ball Busts Out, As Broncos Edge Cards

As a rookie Last season, Zac Piper did not throw his third interception until his 8th game, which was also the first multi-pick game of his career, and he was intercepted no more than twice in any game of his rookie campaign, which he finished with a completion percentage of 66.7. In his injury-delayed NFL debut this time a year ago, he fired 3 TD passes without getting thieved. This time Piper’s return from injury was much less flamboyant. While he did complete 22 of 36 passes (61.1%) for 234 yards and 2 touchdowns, the weeks of inactivity were apparent. On top of the reduced accuracy, Piper was picked off 3 times, contributing to the Denver Broncos needing a late field goal to lift them over the Arizona Cardinals by a single point, 35-34. With Piper struggling at times, Montee Ball (who has been on the trade block for a couple of weeks with no interest from other teams) chose a good time to finally come out of his shell (and out of John Fox’s doghouse?) with 129 yards on 22 attempts- an average of 5.8 per carry. But it was Aqib Talib and a special-reamer, however, who really saved the day for the Broncos, who had to overcome a 21-3 deficit.

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Cardinals drove to a score on a 4 yard designed run by quarterback T.R. Stewart, the first overall selection in Piper’s draft class. Piper was the victim of a sack-fumble combo on Denver’s first play. The Broncos retained possession, but punted without making a first down. Arizona turned the short field into another touchdown and a 14-0 lead on Stewart’s 10 yard TD pass to Markus Wheaton. Fullback Trevor Austin drew a flag on the kickoff and Denver’s second possession began it its 10. Ball opened the drive with a 9+ yard carry and had 29 by his 5th, but that was only a 1 yard gain. On 2nd and 9, Piper went for Virgil Green and was picked off by Daryl Washington at the Arizona 39. The first quarter ended with the Cards at the Denver 41, but they punted out of a 4th and 14 at the 45, thanks to a Jeremiah McCay sack and a Rainey Mallett deflection. The Broncos then finally got on the board with a 49 yard Matt Prater field goal, and got the ball back after an Arizona 3 and out, but then came Piper’s second interception, by Don Carey at the Arizona 48. The Cardinals converted with a 22 yard pass from Stewart to A.J. Jenkins to take a commanding 21-3 lead with 4:29 remaining in the half, but Marc Mariani took the ensuing kickoff 99 yards to the house. Although the sudden touchdown was a good thing, it meant that a Denver defense which had just given up a third touchdown had gotten no rest. The Bronco D nevertheless turned in a three and out, but poor clock management caused the Broncos to leave points on the field at the end of the half. With 25 ticks left, Denver was in a first and 10 at the 15. Piper found Justin Hunter for 7 yards, and the Broncos went no-huddle instead of using one of their two time outs, and after an incomplete Piper pass, 5 seconds were on the clock. Instead of taking a field goal that would have made the score 21-13, Denver wanted to see if it could get a touchdown in 4 seconds or less. Piper hit Green for 6 yards but the clock reached 00:00 before time out could be called.

Mariani rectified the half-ending blunder by opening the second half with another 99 yard touchdown return. Piper’s pass on the try for 2 was incomplete, but the Broncos were back in the game at 21-16. Patrick Peterson returned Denver’s kickoff to the Bronco 48 but on the next play Stewart went for the home run and was picked off in the end zone by Kayvon Webster. Two snaps later Ball lost an after-catch fumble on a hit by David Hawthorne and Orlando Scandrick recovered for the Cardinals. A goal line stand limited the damage to a field goal, but immediately after Mariani’s kickoff return was stopped at the 15, Andre Wallace coughed up the ball when he was jolted by Hawthorne. Kendall Reyes got the recovery for Arizona at the 13, and Stewart tossed a 5 yard TD to Devon Wylie for a 31-16 lead. Denver answered with Piper going to Tyson Ellington for a 3 yard score. The Cards then went 3 and out, followed by the Broncos driving to Piper hitting Sergio Kerr for a 13 yard touchdown on 3rd and 11 with 12:29 left in the game. Another failed two point conversion (an incomplete pass) left Denver down by 2 at 31-29. Jonathan Casillas separated Peterson from the ball on the kickoff return and McCay recovered at the Arizona 17, but on 3rd and 4 Piper missed Hunter and the Broncos had to settle for converting with a go-ahead field goal. Still, Denver had now out-scored Arizona 32-17 since trailing 14-0, and 29-10 after it was 21-3. The Cards’ next series ended with an end zone interception by Talib, and on the next play Ball went for 16 yards to pass the century mark at 104. But soon after, Hawthorne made his presence felt again, picking off Piper’s 3rd and 2 pass intended for Mohamed Sanu. Kasey Studdard further complicated things by face-masking Hawthorne, putting the ball at the Denver 28. The Cards only moved forward 3 yards, but re-took the lead with a field goal with 4:33 left in the game. The Broncos reluctantly punted out of a three and out, but Britton Colquitt pinned the Cards at their 14 with the clock down to 2:58. Three plays later, with the Cardinals making a questionable call by going to the air in a third down conversion attempt, Talib made a sideline interception at the 28. Two Ball runs brought the two minute warning before the Broncos reached a 4th and 1 at the 8 and Prater split the uprights with a 25 yard lead-taking kick with 1:26 remaining. Arizona reached the Denver 46, but instead of trying to work into field goal range, Stewart went deep for Wheaton, and Talib made it a hat trick of picks with an end zone grab. With only two time outs remaining, the Cardinals were unable to prevent the Broncos from running out the clock.

All told, the teams committed a total of 10 turnovers, with the 1st and 6th picks in the 2016 draft accounting for 7 of them.

                Game Notes
After last week's turnover-riddled victory, the Broncos are where they were this time a year ago- at 3-3 following Zac Piper's first appearance of the season. The difference this time is that they don't trail the Raiders by 2 games in the AFC West. The Chargers come to town with a half-game lead, giving Denver a chance to seize the division lead with a third straight win.

One might wonder how San Diego has achieved a 4-3 record while averaging only 13.7 point per game scored. That average is weighed down by their three losses, in which they only scored 10 points twice and were shut out once. And 14 points was enough to get a win against the Nashville Midgets on opening day. That "any Sunday" stuff aside, this Charger team is not one to be feared and the Broncos should get the win provided they can exterminate the turnover bug.

                QB Comparison
                Zac Piper - 63.8 rating, 227/36 (61.1%) 234 YDS, 2 TD, 3 INT

                  Re: Denver A.M.

Broncos Win Third Straight, But Lose Piper Again

The good news: thanks to a failed two point conversion attempt, the Denver Broncos were able to hold on to win by the margin of safety recorded in the second quarter and seize first place in the AFC West from the San Diego Chargers.

The bad news: After playing through 14 consecutive games upon his return from a 2016 preseason injury, Zac Piper has been less fortunate in 2017. His comeback from this year’s exhibition injury has lasted less than 2 games thanks to broken ribs sustained on a second quarter sack. This time Piper is expected to miss at least a month of play. So while Denver’s third consecutive victory puts it a half-game ahead of San Diego at 4-3, its stay at the top may well be short-lived.

For the second consecutive week, the Broncos had a 100-yard rusher. But with Montee Ball slumping back into lethargy, this time it was rookie Andre Wallace who did the honors, with 101 yards on 17 attempts. As to who will start for the Broncos at quarterback next week, there is no clear-cut answer. Tyler Bray (11/17, 88 yards) did not turn the ball over and out-played Jake Locker, who was pulled after going 0-for-4 with a pick.

The Bolts opened the game with a pair of first downs before Wade Hancock was intercepted by Aqib Talib, who returned the ball to the San Diego 49. The turnover was converted into the first quarter’s only score, a 42 yard Matt Prater field goal. In their third possession the Chargers crossed midfield for the first time, but on the first play after they did so, Hancock was hit in the act of throwing by rookie Jeremiah McCay. Hampton’s “pass” went 5 or so feet into the hands of Quanterus Smith for a rare defensive lineman interception at the Denver 47. Piper’s 4 yard toss to Justin Hunter for the game’s first touchdown and a 10-0 Denver lead converted the turnover, but that was Piper’s final pass attempt, with his injury occurring in the Broncos’ next possession. A sack of Locker after Piper’s exit made it a three and out. Dustin Colquitt executed a perfect coffin corner kick, putting the ball out of bounds at the 1, and with a San Diego penalty, the Bolts were backed up to their half-yard line. After a false start flag put the backside of the football even closer to the goal line chalk, DeMarco Murray went off tackle to the left, where he was met and stopped behind the goal line by Kayvon Webster. Unable to capitalize on the good field position after the free kick, the Broncos went three and out. A 21 yard run by Murray (who only had 9 yards prior to that) put the Chargers in a first and goal at the 1 and on the next play Hancock took it in himself to break the shutout. Locker threw a pick to Chris Culliver on the first play after the kickoff, and with each of his throws looking like the red part of a baboon, his day was done. Culliver’s return put the ball at the Denver 12, but Smith’s third down sack assured that the damage was restricted to Blair Walsh’s 31 yard field goal that brought the first half’s two minute warning.

Wallace followed the second half kickoff with a 32 yard run, Ball got 9, fullback Trevor Austin converted the second and 1, then Wallace went for another 21 for a 1st and 10 at the San Diego 16. But there were no more big plays in that drive, nor first downs either, and that red zone trip ended with a field goal that expanded Denver’s lead to 15-10. The teams then traded field goals, with Prater’s next kick coming after a third down Sack of Bray. In that series, Hunter made his first reception since his TD catch. San Diego punted out of its next possession, and with 5:21 left in the game, Prater drove a 52 yard boot through the uprights to give the Broncos an 8 point lead, and as things turned out, the kick proved to be a game-winner. The Bolts rose to the challenge, or almost did, answering with Hancock lofting a 25 yard TD pass to Kenny Britt. But Smith came through with a sack on the try for 2, and with 3:46 to play, San Diego kicked away, hoping for a quick stop followed by a drive to a game-winning kick (or better). With Wallace dropping a pass on contact, Denver was forced to punt and the Bolts’ comeback opportunity came at their 24 with 1:43 and two time outs left. Three plays later it was 4th down, and an incomplete Hancock pass resulted in a turnover on downs. This time, the Broncos were able to run out the clock to seal the win.

Murray was held to 59 yards on 18 carries.

Three straight wins is great but Piper just can't stay healthy. Also, my Ravens are 7-0!

Yeah, M2H you better invest in a solid backup next year (not named Jake Locker lol)

At least NE is seeing a solid turnaround this year.. GO CHASE DANIEL!!

Look who else is 7-0. Belichick is showing the Pats he wasn't the problem.

As much as it would pain me if it comes down to it, it Piper can't give us a 16-start season during the term of his rookie contract, he's not going to get an extension. Then watch him never miss a game for the remainder of his career and tear it up with his next team.

Locker has one more year on his contract but he definitely will no be on the roster next year. Of guys currently in the FA pool, we might take a look at Cousins. Also scheduling a projected 4th-rounder as a backup/long-term Plan B. We'll take him in the third if he's there.

For their latest game without Zac Piper, the Broncos travel to Jersey to take on the AFC East-leading Jets. Gang Green is pretty banged up, and while that might be an equalizer in many cases, Denver still has to get the job done with Jake Locker (or Tyler Bray) under center. Advantage: Jets.

                              Broncos Ground Jets In Upset

In the Denver Broncos’ most recent game without Zac Piper, Jake Locker completed less than 50% of his passes and had fewer touchdowns than interceptions (2/3), Montee Ball and Andre Wallace struggled to run the ball against the New York defense, and the AFC East-leading Jets scored the first 10 and the last 10 points of the game. But, somehow, after spotting the Jets that 10-0 lead, the Broncos managed to score the game’s next 27 points before going cold and holding off a fourth quarter New York rally. Getting 5 takeaways didn’t hurt, but with Locker’s three picks, the turnover margin was only +2.

This oddity of a game began with the Jets scoring the first two times they had the ball. Geno Smith capped the opening series with a 17 yard touchdown pass to T.Y. Hilton, and after a Denver three and out, New York drove to Richard Jeter’s 34 yard field goal. After the Jets were the only team to score in the first quarter, it was the Broncos’ to turn to be the only one to score in the second and third. Denvers’ 27 point run began with a 43 yard Matt Prater kick with 9:16 remaining in the half. Four series later, the Broncos petered out at the New York 28 and settled for another field goal, but they soon had the ball back on an Aqib Talib interception returned to the Jets’ 38. On the next play, Locker found Virgil Green at the 13; then, with Green getting his elbow checked out, Locker hit no. 2 tight end Dave Joyce for Denver’s first touchdown and a 13-10 lead.

The score remained 13-10 until Locker closed the first series of the second half with a 24 yard TD strike to Green. Andre Wallace’s first career touchdown run, from 4 yards out, followed a Xavier Rhodes interception at the Denver 37. Just like that the Broncos were up 27-10, but unbeknownst to them they were already done scoring for the day. After a Jets punt was downed at the 1, the Broncos went three and out and New York was perched at the Denver 20 after a punt return, but a Quanterus Smith sack helped limit the Jets to a field goal that made it a two touchdown game. A Denver scoring opportunity from a Taylor Mays interception returned to the New York 40 was squandered with three plays netting zero yards and Prater missing a 57 yard try. The Jets turned the short field into a touchdown run by Albus Barbados and with 3:45 to go the Broncos’ lead had shrunk to a touchdown. Locker was then picked off trying to convert a 3rd and 6, but the Jets gave it back when Danny Trevathan caused a fumble by tight end John Phillips that was recovered by Timmons. Denver failed to capitalize, going three and out with Britton Colquitt’s punt fair caught at the 21 with 1:48 left in the game. A four-play turnover on downs ensued, and the Broncos ran out the clock on the upset.
