                          2017 Free Agency Recap

Broncos Ink Two Of 2013‘s Top 34 Picks

Denver’s 2017 offseason has not included a “splash” signing, but the organization is nevertheless pleased with the three newest Broncos:

                          CB Xavier Rhodes | 6-1/210 | 2 Years

In the 2013 draft, the Vikings used their “Percy Harvin pick” (25th overall) to select Florida St. corner Xavier Rhodes. Rhodes has played in all 64 possible games in his first 4 years, with no less than 1.121 downs played (70 per game) in a season, and has 6 career interceptions. The Vikes would have loved to have kept him, but the sides could not agree to the terms of an extension and Minnesota needed its franchise tag to retain left tackle Matt Kalil. Rhodes is initially penciled in to succeed the retired Dunta Robinson at the nickel, where he’d be an upgrade and provide more punch than D-Rob did, but he could push Kayvon Webster for the starting spot opposite Aqib Talib. At 6‘-1“ and 210 lbs., he has the size of a safety with the skill set of a corner. If he does not take Webster’s job away, he could also see as-needed service at either of the back end positions.

                          WR Justin Hunter | 6-4/196 | 3 years

The enigmatic career of Justin Hunter relocates to the Mile-High City. In 2013, the Titans traded up to second pick of the second round to select Hunter out of Tennessee, then let him wither on the vine. In his healthy years (2013 and 2015) he averaged only 151 downs played. He missed virtually all of the 2014 season, suffering a season-ending injury on his third play, and last year he was on IR before the regular season began. The Titans made no effort to re-sign him, and with only 9 career receptions, the Broncos were able to sign him for a song once he passed a team-mandated physical.

                          SS Eddie Pleasant | 5-11/213 | 1 Year

After being undrafted out of Oregon in 2012, Pleasant was picked up by Houston, made the roster, and spent the next 5 years with the Texans. He appeared in 2 games as a rookie, but has played in all 16 in 2013, 2015 and 2016. A preseason injury kept hin out for all of 2014. His most productive season was 2013, when he recorded 61 tackles. At present he has no competition to take over the backup strong safety position formerly held by Winston Guy.

It definitely was. The team should at least have given a better account of itself.

                              2017 Denver Broncos Draft Picks

                              2/30: Rainey Mallett, LE, Kasnas | 6-1/254 | 60 at LE, 80 at RE, 73 at OLB

For its first pick of the 2017 draft, the Denver front office had its heart set on Rutgers middle linebacker Jeremiah McCay. But, unwilling to trade up, the Broncos had to watch McCay go to the Saints with the 45th overall pick. In Mallett, Denver went with what it viewed as a “best available” pick but now it’s going to have to figure out what to do with him. A delay in beginning contract negotiations caused Corey Wootton to sign elsewhere, so Mallet’s college position is one of need for the Broncos, but it’s not one to which he is best suited going forward with his NFL career. The team sees him as a “tweener” who could be utilized as a rush end or outside linebacker. He lacks the ideal length for a DE and Quanterus Smith is in no danger of losing his job, so he’s most likely to see the most playing time at the Will backer spot.

                              3/5 (from Arizona): Immanuel Kirce, DT, Maine | 6-5/315 | 85

Ecstatic that Kirce was still available, the Broncos may have finally resolved their second DT issue with the pick acquired in the Louis Vasquez trade. Kirce’s big body is going to occupy a lot of space in the interior line and should make the Broncos tougher to run against in 2017.

                              3/30: Andre Wallace, RB, California | 6-0/204 | 77

The Broncos came into the draft without a viable no. 2 running back behind Montee Ball. Wallace may change that.

                              4/30: Pat Whirley, OLB, Cal-Poly | 6-2/241 | 48

The intent was to add depth at OLB. The result may be a wasted pick.

                              5/30: Trevor Austin, FB, UAB | 6-2/232 | 66

A cap crunch early in the free agency period prevented the Broncos from rewarding Lex Hilliard for his 2016 Pro Bowl season. In a day when fullbacks were more widely valued, Austin may have been picked sooner.

                              6/30: Peniel Kenner, LE, McNeese St. | 6-5/273 | 69

The Broncos ended the unexplained drop of this projected third-rounder, who has an outside shot at competing with Tyronne Randall for Corey Wootons’s former starting spot.
