Broncos Can't Repel Boarders, Fall To 0-2

It’s a small thing, a toe. But it’s a small thing that, when broken, can cause a great deal of trouble. Said damaged appendage belongs to Zac Piper, the Denver Broncos’ first selection in the 2016 NFL draft and Peyton Manning’s anointed successor. Piper’s injury has forced the Broncos to turn to Jake Locker as their interim starter and so far, not so good. In Pittsburgh last week, Locker marred a 347 yard, 4 touchdown performance with three turnovers which were converted into 17 points, including a walk-off field goal. This week Locker did himself one better, with 4 turnovers (all interceptions) and the result was far uglier: a 34-16 loss to the visiting Oakland Raiders. The loss puts the 0-2 Broncos 2 games behind the 2-0 Raiders and makes them a longshot to reach let playoffs even as a wild card, let alone win their 6th straight AFC West title.

As quickly as the Broncos found themselves up 14-0 on the Steelers last week, they found themselves down to Raiders by the same margin. Although Oakland punted out of the opening series, Denver’s first one was a three and out of the worst kind with Locker getting picked off by Vontaze Burfict, which led to a touchdown run by Kendall Hunter. After Matt Prater missed a 56 yard field goal attempt, the Raiders turned the advantageous field position into Willie Duckett’s touchdown pass to tight end Jonathan Lawton, and by halftime the Broncos were trailing 21-6.

The second half began with a pair of three and outs, but on the first play after the Oakland punt, Locker was intercepted by Burfict again. That one was converted into a field goal. Denver’s lone touchdown needed help from the defense. With the score 27-9 late in the third quarter, Dunta Robinson returned an interception to the Oakland 7. Montee Ball got the ball inside the 1 on the next play, then opened the fourth quarter by scoring from there. Ball’s touchdown made it a two score game and the Raiders followed with a three and out, but Denver’s next series ended with Locker picked in the end zone by Kenny Phillips. A long catch and run by Torrey Smith set up Duckett’s touchdown pass to Hunter that put the Raiders up 34-16. After an exchange of three and outs, Zac Dysert relieved Locker. Dysert’s first attempt was a 9 yard completion and Ball moved the sticks, but on the next play Tavarres King was de-cleated by Phillips and D’Qwell Jackson had the ball before it hit the ground. Dysert’s next series ended with an interception at the 4. A 22 yard scramble by Duckett dug the Raiders out, and they went on to run out the clock.

Hey Lopaka, thanks for checking in. I'm really looking forward to Piper getting healthy and I'm wanting to blast through games until he is. We're 0-2 now, looks like no SB in Year 1 like with the Bengals in M12, LOL. That's OK though, I'm enjoying the challenge.

Vasquez Dealt To Arizona, Broncos Binge On FA's

Martez Wilson, seen here casting a demon out of Ryan Tannehill, was among the free
agents signed by the Broncos after the trade of Louis Vasquez freed up over $7 million
            in cap.

After considering at least a dozen offers, the Denver Broncos have traded lame duck right guard Louis Vasquez to the Arizona Cardinals for a 3rd round pick in next year’s draft. Some of the offers included multiple picks, but most of those were picks in 2018. With the Broncos not having a first round pick next May, Denver GM John Elway narrowed the suitors down to those who were offering their 2017 3rd-rounder, and in his estimation the Cards are going to have the worst record out of that group.

With over $7 million in cap freed up, the Broncos went on a spree like a sailor in a liberty port on payday. First on the bill was a replacement for Vasquez, which came in the form of former Wisconsin Badger and Baltimore Raven Ricky Wagner. Wagner has played in 28 games over the last two seasons, including all 16 last year, with 564 downs played. In quick succession came outside linebacker Martez Wilson, defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis and return specialist Brandon Banks. Wilson has played in 25 games over the past two seasons but hasn’t recorded a sack since his rookie year of 2013 and in 2014-15 he averaged less than two tackles per game, but he is still seen as an upgrade at Sam. Ellis unretired and reported to the Bears’ training camp in 2014, made the roster and played in all 16 games, but in 2015 he suffered a season-ending injury in Week 1 and was released during the past offseason. His signing was contingent upon passing a physical. Banks has a career kickoff return average of 25.1 yards, with 2 touchdowns, and a punt return average of 8.6 yards with 1 score. How soon any of the newcomers other than Banks can be ready to contribute remains to be seen, but what the Broncos gave up in the offensive line may have been regained in an improved front seven that has allowed a 100-yard rusher in each of the first two games, and, with DeVonte Stump still mending, an immediate upgrade in the return game.

Week 3 brings the Broncos the opportunity to log their first win of 2016 by avenging last season's AFC championship loss to the Bills, which turned out to be the last game played by Peyton Manning. Buffalo is looking to rebound from a 2 point loss from the Jets while the Broncos are already in a must-win situation. Between 1981 and 1998, only 5 teams that started 0-3 made they playoffs, and not one has since '98.

Broncos Acquire Bray, Dysert Goes On The Block

The Broncos have traded some late-round picks for KC's Tyler Bray.

It was once thought (or at least hoped) that Brock Osweiler and Zac Dysert would compete to be Peyton Manning's successor, but Osweiler priced himself out of the opportunity and Dysert has failed to progress, leaving the Broncos to look elsewhere. With Dysert in a contract year and with no future in the organization, the Broncos looked to make an early move to bring in a new third-stringer and plucked Kansas City's Tyler Bray off the trade block. The cost was two 7th round picks (2017, 2018) and a 5th (2018). Denver GM John Elway tried to get him for less, but the Chiefs would not budge. During his three years at Tennessee, Bray showed some flashes of brilliance but struggled with inconsistency and often showed the maturity of a middle-schooler. It was once said that he had greater accuracy hitting parked cars with beer bottles than hitting an open receiver with a football. Those days are behind him now, and under no-nonsense coaches Andy Reid and Mike Smith, Bray has both behaved and developed into an adequate backup. With the deal in place, Dysert has been offered up, to zero interest thus far. If there is no deal by the deadline, the Broncos may avoid the cap hit and carry Dysert on the roster for the remainder of the season, but should a release become necessary to open a roster spot, expect him to be the one to go.

                        From Bad To Worse

The 2016 Denver Broncos have gone from a field goal loss in the season opener at Pittsburgh to a humbling home opener loss to the Raiders to utter destruction in a rematch of last season’s AFC championship game against the Buffalo Bills. They are now 0-3 for the first time since 1999, which coincidentally was the season following John Elway’s retirement, and the season may well be a write-off before first round pick Zac Piper gets to make his injury-delayed debut. Buffalo’s defense forced four turnovers and recorded five sacks. Denver’s had zero takeaways, failed to sack E.J. Manuel, and allowed Beanie Wells to rush for 94 yards in Darren McFadden’s absence. The final butcher’s bill was a 47-14 defeat that has the Broncos barreling toward a train wreck. Or has the train already left the tracks?

After the Broncos punted out of the opening series, the Bills drew first blood the first time they had the ball, marching to a 29 yard David Buehler field goal. Denver’s second series ended with Jake Locker throwing an interception, but Buffalo failed to convert and the Broncos then drove to a 1 yard touchdown run by Montee Ball. Holding a 7-3 lead with 13:03 remaining in the first half, the Broncos would go on to be out-scored 44-7 the rest of the way. The Bills regained the lead at 4:17 before the break on Manuel’s 6 yard TD toss to Stevie Johnson, then another turnover killed Denver’s next series. A third down completion from Locker to Virgil Green converted, but Green lost the handle, after which it took a fluke play for the Denver defense to limit the damage to a field goal. On third down, Manuel tripped over Wells while dropping back to pass, leaving it to Buehler to drill a 45-yarder on the first play after the two minute warning. A three and out by the Broncos was followed by two big screen pass receptions by Wells and a 1 yard pass from Manuel to tight end Anthony McCoy that put Denver in a 20-7 halftime deficit.

The Bills expanded their lead to 30-7 in the third quarter, then scored on a sack-fumble combo on what proved to be Locker’s final play of the game. Zac Dysert threw a pick-six on his first snap but then directed a touchdown drive in his second series before bowing out to allow the newly-acquired Tyler Bray some playing time. Despite an as-yet limited knowledge of the Denver playbook, Bray completed 4 of his 5 attempts.

That can't get here too soon. Also wouldn't hurt if we still had Miller, Woodyard, and Mays.
