No way would Belichick sign off on that. Sad thing is they had a chance to draft Piper at no. 5. Maybe this will be a watch and learn year for their rookie (Anthony Ruiz) and he'll be starting next year.Comment

Re: Denver A.M.
Sly will be staying in the family through 2020.
Defensive tackle Sylvester Williams, the Denver’s first round pick in 2013 and the linchpin of the defensive line, will be now a Bronco through at least the 2020 season after inking a four year extension that will pay him $46.3 million over the life of the deal. With 44 of a possible 48 career starts and 20 career sacks, Williams has been solid since his rookie year but really came into his own in 2015, recording 37 tackles and 9 sacks. In all, the Broncos have extended the first four players they selected in 2013. Running back Montee Ball (Round 2), cornerback Kayvon Webster (Round 3), and defensive end Quanterus Smith (Round 5) have all signed two year extensions. Becoming the starter after Knowshon Moreno was allowed to become a free agent, Ball had his best year in 2015. His 720 yards and 5 touchdowns would have been considered lethargic in a bygone day, but it was respectable production in a pass-heavy offense centered around Peyton Manning. With Manning gone, Ball can be expected to shoulder a heavier load, expecially with Zac Piper out of action for the first several games. Webster became a starter in 2014 and has played in all 32 games since, recording one interception each season. Smith has 11 sacks in 30 career games. Ball’s deal was for $4.37 million, Webster’s $5.65 million and Smith’s $4.73 million. Of the remaining three 2013 picks, backup tackle Vinston Painter (Round 6) is already working under a new 4 year contract worked out after last season, second 5th round pick Tavarres King is getting a “wait and see” treatment, and 7th-rounder Zac Dysert is expected to be allowed to go into free agency. King has played in all 48 games since he was drafted, making 126 total catches for 1,704 yards and 8 touchdowns. This will be his second year in the no. 2 WR role, and in 2015 he grabbed 78 balls for 804 yards and 4 scores. Even if he exceeds last year’s production, the additions of free agent Mohamed Sanu and second round pick DaVonte Stump to the receiving corps could make him expendable.
Webster’s extension means the team will have its current starting corners around for at least two more seasons, as Aqib Talib has agreed to a new package worth $58.1 million that will extend his stay in Denver through 2019. Incident-free off the field since assault charges against him were dropped in June of 2012 and within the league after a one-month PED suspension was lifted in November of that year, Talib has played in all 32 games since singing with the Broncos and has made 7 interceptions over the past two seasons. At age 30, this deal likely means Talib will retire as a Bronco.
The Broncos are now left with one priority re-signing, right guard Louis Vasquez. The team and Vasquez are currently negotiating, but the current contract demand cannot be met within the cap, meaning Vasquez will have to lower his price if he's to be a Bronco beyond this season.Comment

Re: Denver A.M.
In a tumultuous 2016 season opener at Heinz Field, the Denver Broncos began their post-Peyton Manning era with a gut-wrenching 41-38 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Broncos led by 14 early in the first quarter, trailed by 17 in the 4th, rallied to tie the score and had a shot at forcing overtime or even getting a regulation win before succumbing. Turnovers played a pivotal role in the ebb and flow of the game and are ultimately what did Denver in in the 3 point loss. Pittsburgh scored two defensive touchdowns and converted a Jake Locker fumble into the game-winning walk-off field goal.
After receiving the opening kickoff, Denver drove to the first of two Locker touchdown passes to Alshon Jeffery, then on Pittsburgh’s first play from scrimmage, Taylor Mays picked off Alex Smith to give the Broncos the ball at the 7 with an 18 yard return. A 2 yard run by Montee Ball converted and the Broncos were suddenly up 14-0. Pittsburgh answered, setting up its first score with Shane Vereen’s 61 yard run to the 3. Vereen scored from inside the 1 on third and goal. Tight end Virgil Green, who had a 50 yard reception in the opening series, put the ball on the ground after a catch in the next possession, resulting in a 62 yard scoop-and-score by DB Eric Wright. Just as quickly as it had been established, Denver’s 14-0 lead had been blown. The score then remained deadlocked at 14 until inside the final minute of the half, when Smith connected with Mario Manningham for a 6 yard touchdown. The Broncos answered in only two plays, with Locker hitting Jeffery for 51 and then for a 20 yard TD, and the score was tied at 21 at the half.
The third quarter was all Steelers. They took the second half kickoff and marched to Vereen’s 5 yard TD run, then three plays after the kickoff Locker coughed up a the ball on a sack by Zach Brown and defensive end Derrick Morgan took his recovery 8 yards for a score. On the first play of the fourth quarter and the first after a Pittsburgh punt, Locker threw an interception to Brown at the Denver 23. The Bronco defense managed to limit the damage to a field goal, but the score was now 38-21 with 12:02 to play. With 9:17 remaining, John Fox elected to take 3 of the 17 points needed to tie rather than try for a 4th down conversion, and Matt Prater cut the deficit to two touchdowns with an easy 28 yard boot. Pittsburgh punted after Mays recorded his second sack, and one play after the replay booth stole an end line TD catch from Tavarres King, Locker hit no. 2 tight end Dave Joyce for a 9 yard score that made it a touchdown game. On the ensuing kickoff, Quanterus Smith forced an Antonio Brown fumble that corner Marquiste Ivery recovered at the Pittsburgh 21. Ball ran for 13 on the next play and the clock wound down to the two minute warning. After Ball moved the pigskin from the 8 to the 5, Locker found King in the end zone to tie the score at 38. The Steelers went three and out but the Broncos then had the ball for only two plays, with Locker giving up another sack-fumble combo. Brown was again the perpetrator, and with Lamarr Woodley’s recovery, the Steelers had the ball at the Denver 49 with 35 ticks to go. The Bronco D could not keep the Steelers from getting into field goal range, and on the game’s final play, rookie Will Aguirre displayed complete composure as he drilled the 48 yard game-winner.

Re: Denver A.M.
The days of Louis Vasquez (#65) in Denver now appear to be numbered.
The Denver Broncos and right guard Louis Vasquez have reached an impasse in contract negotiations. While GM John Elway does not feel that Vasquez is asking too much, the price tag is more than the Broncos can afford and Vasquez is unwilling to work out a cap-friendly deal. Resigned to the fact that Vasquez will not be in a Bronco uniform in 2017, Elway has decided to see what the team can get for him now rather than see him walk away with nothing in return in the offseason. As dealing Vasquez would leave the Broncos with only 2 guards, the organization is already exploring its options for a roster replacement. And since his departure would free up over $7 million in cap, Director of Player Personnel Matt Russell has his staff examining other possible acquisitions that could improve the roster, particularly at strong side linebacker and defensive tackle.Comment

3 weeksGame Notes When the Broncos won their 5th consecutive AFC West title last season, the Raiders finished only a half game behind them. With Peyton Manning now retired, the rebuilding Broncos appear on paper to be an inferior team to the improving Raiders, but Denver can ill afford to drop its home opener, especially against a divisional rival. Over the last decade teams with an 0-2 start have ended up in the playoffs fewer than 12% of the time, and those odds would be diminished by a loss that would figure prominently in a tie-breaker situation. The key for the Broncos is going to be for Jake Locker to protect the football better. He had some good numbers last week (29/44, 371 yards, 4 TD) but he also committed three turnovers which were converted into 17 Pittsburgh points in a 3 point loss to the Steelers.
