If I was doing 32 team control like I normally do, there is no way I would have had the Pats even pursue Weeden as a FA. Perhaps in this particular alternate universe Mr. Kraft has passsed and some Bozo is running the show, although I can picture the Hoodie making one of his stank faces at the mere thought of Weeden being his QB.
It must be some alternate reality, because Bob's son Jonathan will more than likely take over when Bob retires/passes. And I can assure you he would not sign Weeden... (sigh) it's 1976 all over again.

I just realized how obsessed us Pats fans are over this.. lol.

After an extended home stand, the Broncos take to the road again with a chance to even their record at 3-3 by beating divisional rival Kansas City. Zac Piper has been practicing this week and has looked sharp and should get the start. Jake Locker has been lobbying for the starting job on Twitter to a mostly negative response. While it's true Locker didn't do anything to lose the job in getting the Broncos from 0-3 to 2-3, the 0-3 start had pretty much already sealed his fate, and GM John Elway's tweet that he is "Bart Scott for Zac Piper's debut" should leave no doubts.

Piper Shines In Debut, Broncos Reach .500

In his injury-delayed NFL debut, rookie Zac Piper did nothing to create a quarterback controversy for the Denver Broncos. Meaning he played more than well enough to preclude any calls for a return of Jake Locker, who helped the Broncos get off the 0-3 mat with a couple of solid outings. Piper was drafted to be Denver’s QB of the future. Locker was signed as a backup or insurance against not getting a capable signal-caller in the draft. With Piper completing 22 of 33 passes for 219 yards and 3 touchdowns in rallying the Broncos from a pair of 10 point deficits, there should be no need for a redefinition of roles. Piper’s counterpart, Kansas City’s Nick Foles, threw three interceptions and finished the game nursing an injury as the Chiefs were out-scored 24-7 after establishing a 17-7 lead. Montee Ball complemented Piper’s passing with 98 yards on 18 carries and helped keep the ball away from the KC offense in the late going.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Chiefs drew first blood with a 19 yard Ryan Succop chip shot after the Broncos put up a goal line stand, and Denver’s next possession was an unimpressive three and out. KC then made it two scores in as many series, taking a 10-0 lead on Foles’ 8 yard pass to Silas Cureton, and the Broncos went three and out again. A Jerrell Freeman interception at the Denver 44 helped the Broncos keep from falling further behind. A Ball run and a facemask penalty put the ball at the Kansas City 35, and Piper’s first career touchdown pass, caught by Mohamed Sanu from 6 yards out, converted the turnover. That score came with only 1:18 remaining in the half, but the Broncos allowed more points before the break when the well-traveled Robert Meachem scored on a 41 yard catch and run. Piper then flawlessly executed a hurry-up drive that ended the half with a 48 yard Matt Prater field goal that cut the halftime deficit to 17-10.

The game was won in the third quarter, when Denver exploded for 21 points while blanking the Chiefs. KC opened the second half with a three and out, after which the Broncos got into field goal range before losing the ball on a sack-fumble combo, with Justin Houston getting credit for dropping Piper and Tamba Hali for the recovery, but on the next play Aqib Talib grabbed the first of his two picks. Piper’s 1 yard sneak converted and tied the score at 17. Another Freeman interception and a facemask on the return by intended receiver Marcedes Lewis gave the Broncos the ball back at the Kansas City 27. In turning a takeway into a touchdown for the third time, Piper’s arm strength was on display as he hit tight end Virgil Green for a 17 yard touchdown while evading a sack. In the final minute of the third quarter, Denver’s lead was expanded to 31-17 by Piper's 3 yard pass to fullback Lex Hilliard. The next score came with 8:35 to go, with Foles’ 8 yard toss to Cureton making it a touchdown game again at 31-24. The Broncos reached the KC 49 before having to punt with 4:09 left. On the first play after Britton Colquitt put his kick out of bounds at the 12, Quanterus Smith crushed Foles to the turf with a sack that sent Foles to the sidelines, leaving the Chiefs needing to force overtime with Caleb Hanie at the helm. Hanie not only dug the Chiefs out of the hole, he subsequently found Meachem for a gain of 28 that put the ball at the Denver 21. An incomplete pass, a no gain by Jamaal Charles and another incomplete pass left the Chiefs in a 4th and 10, and then a sack by Winston Guy forced a critical turnover on downs. The Broncos only got 9 yards before having to punt, but Talib’s second pick (and another facemask by Lewis) came on the following play, and Piper & co. ran out the clock.

                  Game Notes
Streaks of different kinds collide as the Broncos, who have won 3 in a row after starting off 0-3, get a visit from the Chargers, who have dropped 3 straight after beginning the season 2-0. Despite only 1 turnover in last week's win against the Chiefs, the Broncos still lead the league in giveaways. Keeping the errors under control will be crucial to Denver continuing its streak and climbing above .500.

Streak Hits 4 As Broncos Light Up Chargers

Zac Piper’s second NFL game was not as brilliant as his debut, but it didn’t need to be. For the third time in four games, the Denver Broncos’ defense kept an opponent out of the end zone, and with the San Diego Chargers managing only 12 points on a quartet of Blair Walsh field goals, Piper’s two second quarter touchdowns to tight end Virgil Green would have been sufficient for the Broncos to extend their winning streak to 4 games and climb above .500 for the first time this season. Denver however, did not settle for sufficient, gashing its divisional rival and then rubbing salt in the wounds. Montee Ball pounded out 109 yards on 23 carries, then with Ball becoming a spectator after eclipsing the century mark, Brayden Lawson needed only 8 totes to contribute an additional 62 yards and logged the game’s final tally in a 44-12 rout. San Diego’s Philip Rivers had a dreadful outing, completing only 13 of 37 attempts and throwing a hat trick of interceptions. The calls for fourth overall pick Wade Hancock to supplant Rivers under center may soon be reaching a cacophony, but in Rivers’ defense it must be noted that Charger receivers had 13 drops, including 7 by Santonio Holmes, who finished the day with only 1 catch for 12 yards.

The Broncos had the ball for almost half of the first quarter after receiving the opening kickoff, but were forced to settle for drawing first blood on a 38 yard Matt Prater field goal. San Diego got the three points back with its first series and the first quarter ended in a 3-3 tie. The game’s first touchdown, Piper’s 20 yard strike to Green, came after Dunta Robinson grabbed a pick off a drop by Bolts tight end Brandon Myers at the San Diego 42. Following an exchange of punts, another Charger drop ended up in the hands of a Denver defender. This time Danny Trevathan was the beneficiary, and his 36 yard return gave the Broncos a first and goal at the 4. After an incomplete pass, Piper and Green hooked for another touchdown on second down, and Denver was up 17-3. The Bolts responded with their second field goal, then the Broncos punted out of their next possession but got the ball back on an interception by Aqib Talib (no drop involved this time). With the pigskin at the San Diego 40 with 1:41 before the break, the Broncos had a good opportunity to end the half by putting up some more points, but two plays later Piper suffered his first career interception, with Jaiquawn Jarrett doing the deed. Converting the turnover with another field goal with 5 ticks to spare, it was the Chargers who got the final points of the half, cutting their deficit to 17-9.

The Chargers punted out of the second half’s first series, and Brandon Banks took the kick 69 yards to the house. The Bolts never recovered from the shock. By the end of the third quarter, a Matt Prater field goal and Ball’s 4 yard run put Denver up 34-9, and Prater split the uprights another time before the Bolts managed their only points of the half, a 33 yard Walsh field goal with only 3:54 to go. It was a meaningless kick, serving only to get the Chargers into double digits on the scoreboard, and seemed to be the raising of a white flag. A team with more fight left in it may well have tried to turn that red zone trip into a touchdown. Lawson’s late touchdown may have been rubbing it it, but as John Fox said after the game he was just letting Lawson get some reps and wasn’t going to ask him to lay down short of the goal line. “Stopping him was their job, not ours,” said Fox.

Injury notes: Danny Trevathan suffered a broken collarbone in the third quarter and is estimated to be out of service 5-6 weeks. Dunta Robinson left the game with a wrist injury but is expected to be available for next week’s game at Philadelphia.

                              Game Notes
The Broncos and the Eagles have taken different paths to 4-3. Denver is riding a 4 game winning streak while Philly has been sputtering of late after a good start and is coming off a 44-7 drubbing by the Bears. This one appears to be a tossup as to who goes 2 games over .500 and who finishes the weekend 4-4. The eagles have a talented offense masterminded by Chip Kelly, but their defense isn't costing OC's around the league much sleep. A shootout is a definite possibility.
